[Bug 1917103] Re: Accessibility: Zoom: Mouse pointer leaves square trails as it moves across the screen

2021-02-26 Thread Christopher Patti
I took video showing the bug being reproduced on 21.04. Unfortunately
it's not the best. The video in the bug I linked above is clearer.

https://youtu.be/dSPUFTfpzZc

** Description changed:

  Steps to Reproduce:

In the Settings applet choose Accessibility -> Zoom. Toggle the switch
on. This happens whether or not you actually magnify the screen.

When the mouse is moved anywhere on the screen, it leaves behind
repeated partial square trails in its path.

FWIW this is the same bug I reported in

@guiverc suggested I report a new bug after reproducing this behavior on

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 1872870] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 latest update mouse pointer leaves square trails on desktop

2021-02-24 Thread Christopher Patti
Thank you very much I will absolutely try this on 21.04 - I bought a
System76 Thelio recently which I love love LOVE and I purposefully added
an extra 5TB HD I could use as a scratch / play / random distribution
drive.

I really REALLY appreciate the response. I love Linux and Ubuntu and
want to be able to recommend it without recommendation to my visually
disabled friends :)

Now, do I re-route the warp drive through the dilithium chamber or the
transporter? :)

[Bug 1872870] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 latest update mouse pointer leaves square trails on desktop

2021-02-24 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi there @guiverc thank you very much for the response.

I filed the bug using the automated 'ubuntu-bug' program and I'll admit
it's a crappy bug.

I've updated it with a concise problem description and steps to
reproduce.

As to which package it's in, could you please give me any advice on how
I would know? I'm not familiar with Gnome's internal architecture, so
it's impossible for me to guess whether the issue might be with Mutter,
the compositor, the window manager, or the Heisenburg compensator.

I've re-read that standard debugging wiki page in detail, and it doesn't
bring me any closer to understanding how I can dial this problem in any
further.

You'll note that 12 others have reported they're experiencing this
issue. I suspect anyone who's using a large monitor and tries to use
Zoom will encounter it.

I'd have dropped this long ago and resigned myself to using Windows, but
I think making Ubuntu accessible to the visually impaired is important,
because even if you're not disabled like me *everyone* will lose visual
acuity as they age.

Again, thank you for your response and all the work you do for Ubuntu!

** Description changed:

- Can't capture a screenshot of it because the square cursor leavings

+ square shaped trails as it moves.
+
+ Steps to Reproduce:

+ 1. Under the Settings applet's Accessibility menu, turn on Zoom.
+ 2. Observe the mouse cursor leaving little square patterns wherever it goes,
obscuring whatever you're trying to work on.

2021-01-24 Thread Christopher Patti
Just an update to #17 - I've since had to turn this off because it
destabilized my Pop! OS install terribly. I was seeing 3-5 hard lockups
a day.

Since I turned it off it's been rock solid.

Still super sad that there aren't the resources necessary to fix such a
show stopper for low vision people.

Maybe I could fund it personally? :)

2020-12-30 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi everyone!

Let me just say that System76's awesome lifetime support just showed
itself to be PRICELESS in my book!

Nathan from System76 gave me the following work-around, and it WORKED!

Add:

```
CLUTTER_PAINT=disable-clipped-redraws:disable-culling
```

to /etc/environment and reboot! For me anyway on Pop! OS 20.10, no more
zoomed mouse cursor trails!

Can also confirm on Pop!_OS 20.10 on a Thelio R2 with AMD graphics. I'd
thought maybe this was an Nvidia binary blob issue but maybe it's a core
Gnome issue.

Good luck to any partially blind person trying to use this :\

Being partially blind and fine motor impaired, "Disable zoom"

(I'm actually not kidding. Key chorded zoom is how I can actually make

[Bug 1872870] Re: Ubuntu 20.04 latest update mouse pointer leaves square trails on desktop

2020-05-05 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi Ted!

I'd upgraded from 19.10 myself.

I haven't heard of any response, and while I tried to research the
problem (I have a fair set of tech chops) I got lost in the weeds as to
even which subsystem in particular I should be reporting it under, much
less what steps I could take to put some more technical meat on the
bones of this issue.

I've since gone over to Elementary for the moment (and probably for the
long haul. I LOVE it!) so I'm no longer having this problem, but we'll
see what happens when Elementary releases Odin, their 20.04 based
release, in the future.

OK so I took a screencast to try to capture the issue, and it does show

[Bug 1871137] [NEW] Recorded audio is super choppy with today's apt upgrade

2020-04-06 Thread Christopher Patti
Public bug reported:

People reported choppy audio coming from me in my morning stand-up call.
I thought it might be an issue with our chat system, so I tried
recording a sound bite in Audacity both with and without my bluetooth
headset.

I got the same incredibly choppy sound in either case. I'll attach a
clip to the bug if I can so you can see what I mean.

I encountered this bug yesterday doing apt dist-upgrade on my Ubuntu

I worked around the issue by using dpkg to remove the 1.0-3 package,
then ran apt install --fix-broken

I've been running i3wm now for days with zero issues.

apport information

** Description changed:

Hi there folks sorry if it's inappropriate to report a bug in an
upstream release candidate kernel, but as a suggested test / fix for
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1796743 I was told
to install an upstream kernel, which I did.

When I run with that kernel for any length of time, or do anything
involving high CPU (like run Firefox for instance) the system fan begins
to whine and the system slows down to the point where it finally hangs.

I tried to run 'ubuntu-bug linux' from the terminal, but when I do I get
the error seen in the screenshot (attached).

I'll go back to running 4.18 for now because not being able to sleep the
laptop isn't a show stopper, but it's definitely something I consider
important for a fully fledged operating system / work environment :)

Thanks and please let me know if there's anything I can do to provide more
data / help with testing / etc.

I'll bet dollars for donuts this is the nouveau driver. I see a bunch of
lines like this as the system slows to a crawl (Also there's a
juddering/tearing band in the center of the screen)

Oct 27 17:01:44 yamato kernel: [ 402.710539] nouveau :01:00.0: DRM:
base-0: timeout

Full kernel log copied away before the system slowed to a crawl and had
to be restarted.

FWIW this was running 4.19 final. I'll update the summary accordingly.

Feel free to close this if it makes sense. I am researching how best to
report this upstream. The documentation on reporting kernel bugs makes
it clear you need to identify the affected subsystem or your bug will be
bit-bucketed. More hard core log diving is called for :)

Re: [Bug 1795637] Re: No login screen when booting Cosmic due to plymouth racing with the rest of the boot process and not releasing DRM devices in time

2018-10-22 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi Will!

Just wanted to follow up with some good news and maybe something you
folks can use to help fix this one should it ever come around on the
guitar? :)
I found I was able to get Gnome to start up correctly on boot if I just
add this line to the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf:
WaylandEnable=false

I added that as a comment to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1796614
If I have more time I'd love to dig into the C code and figure out what
about Wayland detection is failing - the Alienware 17 R5 has the Nvidia
GTX 1080 as well as the Intel graphics chipset for longer batter life
when not gaming / doing high end 3D. I wonder if the Wayland detection
is getting fouled up on that?
Anyway, I am loving 18.10 now that I have the issues ironed out. Once
again thank you for all the work you do on both the software and the
community!
-Chris

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

Hi all. I noticed this problem when I upgraded from 18.04 to 18.04.1
(Worked perfectly in stock 18.04) and then I was testing the 18.10 beta
and hoped it would be fixed there but it's not.

To reproduce: login to the regular Ubuntu desktop, hit Super+Alt+= (You
can validate that your keyboard shortcut is set to the default in
  Settings->Keyboard.)

I also tried changing the keyboard mapping for this action in case there
was a conflict, and no matter what I set it to I couldn't zoom from the
  keyboard.

As a partially blind user, this is a show stopper for me - I require
screen zoom to be able to use Ubuntu at all for any serious work.

  Thanks for everything you do!

[Bug 1796614] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 boots to a blank screen with a blinking cursor

2018-10-21 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi guys! (Daniel? Since you seem to be the only one reading this :)

I fixed it! :) I added:

WaylandEnable=false
ow at les
to the [daemon] section of /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and the Gnome GUI starts right
up on login!

I feel accomplished! :)

Now at least if anyone ever has time to fix the core issue, they'll know
exactly where to look. I'll post the same thing in the upstream issue.

[Bug 1799073] [NEW] Full screen key chorded zoom (Alt+Super+=) fails in 18.04.1/18.10

2018-10-21 Thread Christopher Patti
Public bug reported:

Hi all. I noticed this problem when I upgraded from 18.04 to 18.04.1
(Worked perfectly in stock 18.04) and then I was testing the 18.10 beta
and hoped it would be fixed there but it's not.

To reproduce: login to the regular Ubuntu desktop, hit Super+Alt+= (You
can validate that your keyboard shortcut is set to the default in
Settings->Keyboard.)

-Chris
(Happy to try any work-arounds or testing people can think up to help fix this
problem)

[Bug 1796614] Re: Ubuntu 18.10 - X fails to start on login

2018-10-14 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi there. Thanks for the triage. As per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1795637/comments/25
this bug isn't a duplicate of the bug you mention. I've removed the
duplicate notation.

In fact this bug is being tracked in upstream Gnome bug

[Bug 1795637] Re: No login screen when booting Cosmic due to plymouth racing with the rest of the boot process and not releasing DRM devices in time

2018-10-12 Thread Christopher Patti
Hi there! I'm looking for suggestions on further testing I can do to
disambiguate the situation I'm seeing from this bug.

I reported https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm3/+bug/1796614
which was marked as a duplicate of this bug.

However, I now have this package installed (Output of apt policy below),
and I am still seeing a blank screen with a blinking cursor at initial
boot, but can flip to a different VT, login and run startx and
everything functions normally.

Am I

A) Mis-understanding what I need to do in order to test this fix, or
B) missing some other subtlety that would lead to my expectations that this bug
should go away to be invalid or
C) in fact observing a different bug altogether that isn't a duplicate of this
one?

Any hints anyone can throw my way would be very much appreciated. Thanks
in advance!

[Bug 1796743] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.10 - Alienware 17 R5 crashes on sleep

2018-10-08 Thread Christopher Patti
Public bug reported:

If the machine goes to sleep, either because I close the lid or because
it idles too long, it ends up in a weird state when I try to resume. If
I press the power/Alien button, the fan runs and the keyboard/trackpad
light up but nothing happens.

Ultimately I need to hard power off the laptop (by holding the power
button in for three seconds) which causes it to boot from scratch.

[Bug 342070] [NEW] No provision to reduce contrast for a laptop

2009-03-12 Thread Len Patti
Public bug reported:

I am unable to adjust the contrast on an HP laptop, and have not seen
any solutions in the forums. Viewing photos with Image Viewer or F-Spot
viewer, photos are washed out in bright areas, as if blooming. Same
problem for videos under VLC player. In Vista, this also occurred, and
the ATI Catalyst software contrast adjustment fixed it. There is a
keypad adjustment for brightness, but nothing I can find for contrast.
I don't see any reference to a software adjustment under Ubuntu. I have
experimented with Gamma, but it does not have the desired effect.

The system is a DV7-1232 with an ATI HD 3200 video card. It is configured as
a Vista home premium and Ubuntu Intrepid dual boot. Lspci shows: “01:05.0 VGA
compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS780M/RS780MN [Radeon HD 3200
Graphics]
”. The screen is a 17” brightview.

I followed the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver#Tweaking%20The%20Driver ,
but did not modify xorg.conf, as the instructions say “From Ubuntu 7.10
and onwards, the driver and server autodetect most settings. You can
often just take away your xorg.conf and it will run fine”. I did try to
edit the xorg.conf file, but made an error, and reloaded my backup.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf looks like this:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)

#

# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool,
using

# values from the debconf database.

#

# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.

# (Type man xorg.conf at the shell prompt.)

#

# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades
*only*

# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg

# package.

#

# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously

# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and
settings

# here are ignored.

#

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically
updated

# again, run the following command:

# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section Device

Identifier Configured Video Device

EndSection

Section Monitor

Identifier Configured Monitor

EndSection

Section Screen

Identifier Default Screen

Monitor Configured Monitor

Device Configured Video Device

EndSection

Incidentally, I did not notice a contrast setting in the ATI fglrx
driver when I experimented with it.
