[Bug 1172008] Re: Big Black B Buetooth and white B Blueman applet in top panel

2013-05-09 Thread Peter Miller
Same for me (upgrading from the previous version though) and I've found the
reason for this here:
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/xubuntu-ringtail-high-end.html
The installed desktop looks the same as before, and even the extra Bluetooth
icon was retained. The reason is, of course, that under Session and Startup,
you have both Blueman Applet and Bluetooth Manager configured to load. The one
problem is, it's not easy to know which one corresponds to the black icon, and
which one to the more stylish and naturally integrated silver gray one.
I've disabled the autostart of the Bluetooth Manager, and now only the white
one remains after logging out and in again.

[Bug 974834] [NEW] todays update resulted in window decoration vanishing

2012-04-05 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

The update 2.5 hours ago (1:0.9.7.4-0ubuntu1) has resulted in all window
decoration vanishing from all windows, and the touchpad doesn't work (mouse
does).
.xsession-errors shows nothing relevant.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log shows nothing relevant.
I had to use metacity --replace in order to file this bug report (touch pad
works again).

[Bug 795851] [NEW] software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

When displaying package lists, or information about a specific package,
software-center looks in a number of directories for a suitable icon to
display for that package, e.g. the /usr/share/pixmaps and /usr/share
/app-install/icons directories. It does not, however, look inside the
package itself at the files it will install, for icons that would be
installed into those same directories. This means that an installed
program will get an icon displayed (if it installed the icon itself) but
an uninstalled program will not. Additionally, when upgrading, the
*old* icon will be displayed, rather than the new replacement icon in
the package.

Also, none of the icon behaviour appears to be documented anywhere. I
gleaned the above by reading the python source code. Documenting the
icon behaviour would allow developers and packagers to know how to put
icons into their packages (icons they use for their projects and web
sites) in order to have them displayed correctly in GUI-based package
installer programs, such as software-center. (I expected to find
something in the Debian Policy Manual, but it only speaks about app
menus.)

[Bug 795851] Re: software-center doesn't look inside packages for icons

2011-06-11 Thread Peter Miller
The more I think about it, the more it would appear that all packages
who's icons are present in app-install-data should have a packaging bug
against that application. Why don't these packages install their own
icons? Looked at it from this perspective, that the app-install-data
package exists at all is evidence of a problem in GUI package
installers, such as software-center, not looking into packages to obtain
the appropriate icons for each package.

[Bug 722122] Re: Adding PPAs should be made easier.

2011-06-10 Thread Peter Miller
The command
software-center apt:packagename
will take you into the GUI, and up to the point where it is ready to install
the new package.

Why doesn't the command
software-center ppa:archivename
take you into the GUI and up to the point where it is ready to add the new PPA?

This would, with appropriate warnings about trust-worthy-ness, mean that
you could get ppa: URIs to work the same way apt: URIs work now. With
the result that web pages with newbie-scary command line install the
ppa then install the package instructions can be hugely simplified...
to two simple links.

[Bug 643261] [NEW] dput ppa:... should check series

2010-09-20 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dput

(1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04

(2) $ apt-cache policy dput

 *** 0.9.5.1ubuntu1 0

Packages

(3) When using dput to upload a package to a LaunchPad PPA, it would be
helpful if the dput command could check the series (Lucid, Karmic,
Hardy, etc) and avoid wasting time and bandwidth on a package that will
be rejected immediately. There may be other checks that could be moved
forward to this point in the process.

was rejected.

sudo apt-get install lib32v4l-0 libv4l-0

For camorama:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so camorama

For skype:
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib32/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

Maybe a simple wrapper script for skype could be added to medibuntu?

I also get this on Dapper.
When I use telnet, it is easy to see that the header it is complaining about is
generated by Apache.
In my case, the first three characters of the Content-Encoding: header are
garbage.
This may be an apache bug.

[Bug 149231] gutsy: evolution click to open link does nothing

2007-10-04 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

In an email with a URL in it, the URL is highlighted as usual, and the
usual copy and open choices appear. The copy choice works. The open
choice, however, silently does nothing. No output on stderr, either.

Found problem: fiesty-gutsy upgrade messed with prefered browser in
gnome-control-center and it was lanuching a non-existent command. The fix is
to set it back to firefox. The question is, why did the upgrade mess with it
at all?

2007-09-08 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

When running acroread on Ubuntu Gutsy with current updates, it won't load. The
error message is
acroread: error while loading shared libraries: libXcomposite.so.1: wrong ELF
class: ELFCLASS64.
Probably this is related to acroread being an 32 bit application.
Acroread worked fine a few days ago. I don't know if this might affect other 32
bit applications as well.

Finally, to get rid of the error message that the PPKLite.api plug-in

Some searching indicated this has something to do with OpenLDAP and
problems on 64 bit systems with acroread being a 32 bit application.

[Bug 131470] Re: [Gutsy] Printers completely stopped working after the cupsys update 1.2.12-3ubuntu1

2007-08-11 Thread Peter Miller
Cupsys just got updated again, so I've plugged my printer back in and it
was added automatically with the correct Photosmart driver, quite nice!

However, when trying to print a document, I had got the job state
Pending: printer-stopped. Canceling the job, running sudo aa-complain
cupsd and trying to print again did not help. While the printer status
in the properties dialog was Ready before submitting the job, it now
was Unplugged or turned off. Of course the printer was neither
unplugged nor turned off. I've removed the printer and recreated it (the
correct drivers are available again now). After that I was able to print
successfully, multiple times.

It seems I'm able to reproduce the problem by restarting Ubuntu. Running
sudo aa-complain cupsd before printing does not help. The status of a
print job is Pending: printer-stopped until I recreate the printer.
Let me know if I can provide any information from log files etc. that
could help to fix this.

[Bug 131470] Re: [Gutsy] HP network printer completely stopped working after the recent cupsys update

2007-08-10 Thread Peter Miller
Same here, Gutsy with current updates and an HP Photosmart 8150 which
worked before. Had the same job-stopped problem. After removing the
printer using gnome-cups-manager, I cannot recreate it because there is
no driver for any Photosmart model, only LaserJet models from HP are
listed.

Started from the terminal, gnome-cups-manager prints many messages of
the kind

** (gnome-cups-add:3585): WARNING **: Two ppds have driver == 'PS, 1.1'
-openprinting/Sharp/Sharp-MX-4501N-ps.ppd.gz (Sharp MX-4501N PS,

-openprinting/Sharp/Sharp-MX-4501N-ps-jp.ppd.gz (Sharp MX-4501N PS,

however I'm not sure if that's an error.

However, that doesn't answer the bug report.
It doesn't build in... wait for it... Dapper.

Thank you for your bug, the required libgnomevfs2-0 version is available
to dapper-updates, did you configure your pbuilder to use it?

On further checking - specifically extracting the etc/apt/source.list
from the tarball - it seems I did not.

Rebuilding with the bpbuilder create --othermirror magic did the trick.
I have updated my scripts so it doesn't recur.

Thank you.

[Bug 97694] dapper can't build itself: pbuilder gets /proc wrong

2007-03-28 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pbuilder

using an up-to-date dapper
widest possible set of sources in /etc/apt/sources.list
using pbuilder 0.145ubuntu4.1

running apt-proxy on local machine to minimize network traffic and build
times.

The pbuilder create option produces the output below - notice how it
has trouble with /proc ...

  ln: creating symbolic link `/home/buildd/the-pbuilder-
way/build//7379/etc/mtab' to `../proc/mounts': File exists

This trouble is then visited on any package you try to build with
pbuilder and which makes use of /proc during is build (and there are
hundreds of them) causing those builds to fail.

last i heard, ubuntu could not ship enblend because of license problems in

Ah, ha. You are right. I must have built it from source each time.

so, waiting for enblend developers to fix the problem, probably the
right fix for this bug is to remove enblend from the recommends of hugin
(unless the problem was already fixed).

sounds right.

2007-03-12 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

In evolution, the contact information includes a wants to receive HTML

It would also be good if there was also a sign outgoing messages

especially important for Windows victims, because many can't figure out
how to open the attachment which contains the email text.

[Bug 88276] Re: alsa-lib Binary: disagrees with Files:

2007-02-28 Thread Peter Miller
I don't understand. I have read 5.6.8 Architecture and I don't see
the connection with the .changes file's Files and Binary field
discrepancies. Could you please explain?

Also, that .changes file, above, was produced with a simple pbuilder
command, with no options to add or remove anything. Was my pbuilder
command wrong?

[Bug 88276] Re: alsa-lib Binary: disagrees with Files:

2007-02-27 Thread Peter Miller
Ah, my mistake. I misinterpreted this section. The .dsc file is
correct.

However, the .changes file is not. The relevant section, quoted below,
implies that the Binary field of a .changes file must not list package
names of binaries not actually built -- it's difficult to upload a non-
existent file. I.e. Files and Binary must agree in a .changes file.

-
5.6.19 Binary

This field is a list of binary packages.

When it appears in the .dsc file it is the list of binary packages which
a source package can produce. It does not necessarily produce all of
these binary packages for every architecture. The source control file
doesn't contain details of which architectures are appropriate for which
of the binary packages.

When it appears in a .changes file it lists the names of the binary
packages actually being uploaded.

The syntax is a list of binary packages separated by commas[36].
Currently the packages must be separated using only spaces in the
.changes file.

[Bug 88276] alsa-lib Binary: disagrees with Files:

2007-02-26 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

When I build the alsa-lib package from source, the .changes file's
Binary and Files fields disagree. I'm using an up-to-date i386 Dapper.
There is example .changes file at the end of this note: you will see
that the lib32asound2 and lib32asound2-dev binaries are missing.

This is a problem because I'm trying to automate package building, and
when I compare the .dsc file with the pool, there are 2 files missing,
indicating that the package needs a rebuild - maybe the previous build
got a ^C halfway through copying the files.

What is happening is that pbuilder of alsa-lib makes either plain and
32 or it makes plain and 64 files, always with 2 Binary files
missing.

Possible solution 1:
I suggest that it should always make 32 and 64 and plain with plain being a
copy of one of other two. This means that the Binary line will always be
accurate, and never disagree with the Files field of the .changes file. This
way also leads to a more consistent user experience: both width-specific form
will always be available no matter what the platform, and so will the native
form.

Possible solution 2:
An alternative solution is to have architecture specific source packages, TWO
of them, one which is for 32 bit machines, and one which is for 64 bit
machines. Arrange the Binaries lines of each package so that it always agrees
with the Files field of the .changes file.

[Bug 87529] feisty xsane Lexmark X73 broken

2007-02-24 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsane

xsane 0.99+0.991-1ubuntu2

The Lexmark X73 is recognised as a printer, but not a scanner. xsane
will not talk to it at all.

[Bug 87527] feisty xsane Canon LIDE 20 broken

2007-02-24 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xsane

xsane 0.99+0.991-1ubuntu2

Recognises the scanner, but it fails to turn on the light and move the
scan bar. It returns an all-black image.

Forgot to mention that xsane works just fine with this scanner on
Dapper.

Same problem here. Kernel panic after acpi_hw_low_level_read,
acpi=force lets me boot without problems.

[Bug 54600] /usr/lib/libsmbclient.a is 8 bytes long

2006-07-30 Thread Peter Miller
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsmbclient-dev

# ls -l /usr/lib/libsmbclient.a
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8 2006-07-11 22:48 /usr/lib/libsmbclient.a

# uname -a
Linux goshawk 2.6.15-23-686 #1 SMP PREEMPT Tue May 23 14:03:07 UTC 2006 i686
GNU/Linux

This is an up-to-date dapper

The libsmbclient.a file is an empty archive. This means that anything linked
to it (in my case, fusesmb) will fail.

[Bug 50741] Re: Slow disk writes (ubuntu kernel)

2006-06-26 Thread Peter Miller
I have noticed that it takes linux-image-2.6.15-26-686 about 15 seconds
to mount root (most of it with no disk activity) as the second step of
the boot process, where linux-image-2.6.15-23-686 took a faction of a
second.
