[Bug 1307648] Re: chromium 34 from proposed does not take input from keyboard in first entry point on several webpages

2014-08-05 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
OK. I have installed the chromium-broswer beta using

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:saiarcot895/chromium-beta

and installed Chromium 37. I can confirm that the problem then
disappears.

Which ppa should I use if I wanted Chromium 35?

[Bug 1256591]

2014-01-07 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
On Kubuntu 13.10/KDE 4.11.3 with a Fuji Finepix AX 300 and the reported
problems, here is what I get:

solid-hardware query "Camera.supportedDrivers == 'gphoto'"

gives

Object::connect: No such signal

udi = '/org/kde/solid/udev/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:13.2/usb2/2-4'

Because this does not have a Block.device line, what else should I do?

[Bug 970139] Re: apt_check.py crashed with SIGSEGV in pkgPolicy::GetCandidateVer()

2012-08-24 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I have experienced this bug and it has resulted in the following
consequences on my Kubuntu 12.04 amd64 system:

1. Inability to update or upgrade with

apt-get update && apt-get upgrade

See example below for error message.

2. Error when trying to install or reinstall any existing package. For
instance

sudo apt-get install --reinstall update-notifier-common

gives

---

For the record, I was told during some upgrade that libhal1 was not
needed and could be removed by

sudo apt-get autoremove

and the above error must have resulted from that operation.

3. The system runs but is flaky.

4. I have a new system disk that is less than three months old and is
unlikely to be the cause of the above problems.

5. It appears that I need to re-install my system (sigh).

If there is any workaround, I will appreciate knowing about it.

Thank.s

[Bug 358654] Re: udevadm trigger is not permitted while udev is unconfigured

2010-09-02 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
LL Phillips: You might want to see

http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9796852&postcount=10

for StewartM's step-by-step solution if you have previous kernel images
that you can reboot from.

If you do not have a previously working kernel, you might have to do
what Andrux101 has suggested at

http://ohioloco.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8079302&postcount=12

and what Aymeric Mansoux has also suggested above. Be sure to prepend
sudo to the relevant commands.

In any case, here is what I did:

1. Boot from Live CD. Go into console mode [Ctrl-Alt-F1] or fire up a
terminal.

2. sudo mkdir /media/newroot

3. sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/newroot

(My root partition is at /dev/sda1; change /dev/sda1 to suit your case.)

4. sudo chroot /media/newroot

5. sudo update-initramfs -u -k all

(the "all" argument is a bit of bravado since I did not know what
exactly it would do. If in doubt, try "2.6.32-24-generic" instead of
"all".)

6. Reboot without Live CD.

It is a great shame that this bug has resurfaced after a kernel image
update.

FWIW, my most recent kernels are:

2.6.32-24-generic

and

2.6.32-24-preempt

in case it is one and not the other theta has triggered this problem.

I appeal for an early closure of this problem. Thanks.

[Bug 522814] Re: ibus does not install itself as an option for the all_ALL quasi-locale

2010-07-25 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I can confirm the reported behaviour for ibus on a fresh CD install of
Kubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 on an AMD 64 system.

One consequent problem is that if I launch the KDE kate text editor
version 3.4.5 for KDE 4.4.5 from the launchpad pparepos, I still get a
"No Input Window" message from the ibus system tray icon. So, input
method switching is not available in kate launched from an icon.

However, if I lauch kate from a KDE konsole terminal by typing

kate &

then I am able to access in kate the different languages I need through
ibus.

FWIW, I think this is because my personal ~/.bashrc has the lines

export GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus
export xmodifie...@im=ibus
export QT_IM_MODULE=ibus

but the non-availability of the system-wide alternatives as noted above
make the ibus language options unavailable to kate launched from an
icon.

[Bug 514170] [NEW] Klipper middle mouse select and paste fails sometimes

2010-01-29 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu 9.10 using KDE 4.3.5 the middle mouse select and paste
function fails in kate or kile. This seems to happen randomly and is
very frustrating. Klipper has been configures to synchronize contents fo
clipboard and selection, and yet this synchronization is absent. There
are tell-tale blank lines in the clipboard when this happens.

[Bug 424249] Re: locks when trying to save as PDF

2010-01-25 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
It works in Kubuntu 9.10 with

gscan2pdf 0.9.29-1ubuntu1~9.10prevu1
imagemagick 7:6.5.8.3-1~9.10prevu1

both combined from source packages using prevu.

One curious observation though: there is no warning before an existing
file is overwritten by a new scanned file, saved as a PDF.

Thank you.

[Bug 424249] Re: locks when trying to save as PDF

2010-01-12 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I have experienced the same problems as noted above.

Here is what I did to work around.

1. I installed the imagemagick-6.5.8.3 source package, generated the
.deb using prevu, and installed the resulting package on Karmic Koala on
an amd-64 PC. My packages have version number 6.5.8.3-1~9.10prevu1.

2. I ran gscan2pdf with the new package and experienced the same hanging
at 50% on saving to PDF.

3. I deleted my ~/.gscan2pdf file and re-ran gscan2pdf. This time, I was
able to save successfully to PDF. Interestingly, the progress dialog on
saving still hung at 50% but then very rapidly concluded the action and
disappeared.

4. Note: on scanning lineart, there is no compression and indeed no
choice for compression other than "none". On scanning grayscale, I chose
no compression again.

In sum, changing the imagemagick suite to the latest on the
Debian/Ubuntu source repositories and removing the old ~/.gscan2pdf file
did the trick.

I am happy to provide more information if I am told what to send. I
would love to see this bug squashed: gscan2pdf is such a good package.

Thank you for your efforts.

[Bug 368053] Re: Jaunty fails to recognize USB-connected cell phone as device

2009-11-21 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
On Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 I have the same problem with an Sony Ericsson

Here is what I did to get around the problem:

1. sudo apt-get install usbmount pmount

2. Create /etc/udev/rules.d/75-mobile-phone.rules with this content:

SUBSYSTEM!="usb_device", ACTION!="add", GOTO="mobile_phone_rules_end"

# Sony Ericsson K750i mobile phone
SYSFS{idVendor}=="0fce", SYSFS{idProduct}=="d016", GROUP="plugdev", MODE="0660"

I do not understand the intricacies of how this works or whether it will

but not in Karmic.

I cannot say for sure, but the next time I tried compiling kate source
using prevu, I got a different error.

In any case, I hope that karmic fixes the problem with kate that I was
trying to solve by compiling source with prevu.

[Bug 392898] [NEW] prevu error: No space left on device

2009-06-27 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: prevu

I am trying to compile kate from Karmic source using prevu on a Jaunty
machine with lots of hard disk space on all partitions. I have confirmed
that no partition is even close to maxing out. The highest usage is on
my root (/) partition at 59.6% with almost 8 GB free.

The build of qt4-x11-4.5.1 proceeds successfully until almost the end
when it fails with the message:

---
cp: writing `debian/libqt4-qt3support//usr/lib/libQt3Support.so.4.5.1': No
space left on device
dh_install: command returned error code 256
make: *** [binary-install/libqt4-qt3support] Error 1
dpkg-buildpackage: failure: fakeroot debian/rules binary gave error exit status2
---

Other relevant information:

1. lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

2. apt-cache policy prevu
revu:
  Installed: 1:0.5.2-0ubuntu1

  Version table:
 *** 1:0.5.2-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://ftp.iinet.net.au jaunty/universe Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3. What you expected to happen
I expected the prevu compilation from source to complete as there was no other
error before this.

4. What happened instead
Compilation/installation aborted with the error message given above.

I have two questions:

(a) Why does this error occur?

(b) How can I work around it?

Many thanks.
P.S. Perhaps the problem is with an underlying python script or another package
but I have encountered the error in prevu.

[Bug 220957] Re: Fails to see blank CD/DVDs for writing

2009-06-21 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I used to experience this problem with my previous i386 PC which had a
Pioneer DVD reader-writer. The problem never went away.

I am now on an AMD 64 machine with an ASUS DVD reader-writer and am
running Jaunty. There is no problem now.

It would perhaps be useful if you stated your brand and model of DVD
reader-writer. I think that this problem arises with certain brand/model
combinations of CD/DVD reader-writers and their device-level
interactions with the kernel.

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs

2009-06-03 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
After re-installing the printer on the Jaunty PC, the new printout is
raised by 2 mm for the whole page. Once the pages are so aligned, if a
light is shone through the two pages, the printout appears as one. This
is sufficient for me.

I think the problem has been solved.

My deep gratitude to Till Kamppeter for solving this.

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs

2009-06-03 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I have re-installed poppler-utils and used the latest Improved Poppler-
based pdftops and printed the PDF. I can report the following:

1. The "small piece of the lower border of each letter [being] added to
the upper border" problem has now gone. Thank you very much for that.

2. When I superimposed this printout with one of the same page printed
on the same printer from another PC running Intrepid, I find the
following differences on the new printout:

(a) Header is moved down by 4 mm
(b) Footer is moved up by 7mm
(c) Left margin is moved inward by 4mm
(d) The same line occupies a shorter length

I wonder whether these result from different default paper size settings
and "scale to fit" options on the two PCs.

I will re-install the printer on the Jaunty machine and report back if
these differences still exist.

Thank you.

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs

2009-06-03 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I tried

apport-collect 362186

and went as far as the "Almost finished ..." stage but did not know how
to "go back to the application window in which you started the process
and inform it that you have done your part of the process." This seems
arcane for a CLI. What does one type in on a terminal that is obviously
not accepting input?

I also tried

ubuntu-bug cups

but do not know how to link the information it collected to this bug-
report.

Any advice for further action on either option is much appreciated.

The error log is attached.

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs

2009-06-03 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I replaced /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops with the new Poppler-based
pdftops filter and changed its permissions to 755 as advised at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cups/+bug/362186/comments/43
above.

Now, the job does not get printed although it shows up in the printer
queue. The printer light does not flash to show a pending job either.
Could it be missing an end-of-file marker?

Reverting to the original /usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftops reactivates
printing but with the original problem. So the non-printing is a direct
result of using the new filter.

[Bug 362186] Re: Spurious lines on print outs

2009-05-29 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I can confirm the same problems as reported above, with PDF documents
written with Adobe Minion Pro and Wranock Pro on Kubuntu 9.04 on an AMD
64 PC.

However, a PDF embodying Linux Libertine OTF, Lohit Tamil, and Lohit
Hindi fonts does not suffer from the "small piece of the lower border of
each letter [being] added to the upper border" noted by Till Kamppeter
above.

My workaround thus far has been to print affected documents from a Hardy
Heron PC, but I eagerly await a speedy resolution to this problem on
Intrepid.

Thanks.

Thank you so much Ralf Jung. I did what you suggested and it now works!

Because it is not obvious how to do it, I have recorded below my

Settings -> Configure K3b -> Plugins -> Audio Encoder -> External Audio
Encoder -> Configure -> Mp3 Lame -> Edit

Tick the checkboxes for Swap Byte Order and Write Wave Header in the

Then Apply -> OK twice and you are good to go.

Once more, many thanks for the workaround.

Ever since FF 3.0.5 beta, I have had this type of problem. It then

Thanks for that hint. I need clarification on the ext4 filesystem:

1. Will it be an option in jaunty?

2. Is it enough for the root partition / to be ext4 or should the /home

[Bug 301522] Re: package gettext 0.17-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-28 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I removed the symlinks from /usr/local/bin including that of
/usr/local/bin/install-info and the problem has gone away. I can now
install gettext and all packages needed by prevu, which itself has been
successfully installed.

Perhaps this error message occurs after non-Debian-package installations
are made on a system as I did with TeXLive2008 from DVD.

[Bug 301522] Re: package gettext 0.17-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1

2009-02-28 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Sorry for the sloppiness. I was trying to understand what happened while
I filed my comments.

I think the cause of this problem is my installation of TeXLive 2008
from DVD. That has put the GNU version of install-info before the Debian
install-info. For more details, please see:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gv/+bug/316557

In essence, I have two install-info programs on my system:

/usr/sbin/install-info --version

gives
---
Debian install-info version 1.14.20ubuntu1.

Copyright (C) 1994,1995 Ian Jackson.
This is free software; see the GNU General Public Licence version 2 or
later for copying conditions. There is NO warranty.
---

whereas

/usr/local/bin/install-info --version

gives

---
install-info (GNU texinfo) 4.12

Copyright (C) 2008 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
License GPLv3+: GNU GPL version 3 or later
This is free software: you are free to change and redistribute it.
There is NO WARRANTY, to the extent permitted by law.
---

This conflict is preventing clean package removal by dpkg because it
sees the GNU rather than the Debian version. It might also be the reason
why installation of prevu and its dependencies failed in the first
place.

The /usr/local/bin/install-info was symlinked during the installation of
TeXLive 2008 from DVD. If I remove the symlinks and add the paths to my
.bashrc file, perhaps that will resolve the problem, because root's PATH
will not see it.

Please let me know if you need any further info.

Thanks.

2009-02-28 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I was trying to install prevu on Intrepid on an amd64 setup. It failed
with error messages as reported above.

The apport stuff appeared but I do not know if an error report was
generated and mailed out.

I tred to uninstall the packages with apt-get remove --purge but all the
packages were not uninstalled.

Finally, apt-get install --fix-missing gave these messages:

Is there anything else you need to trace the cause of this problem? Do
let me know and I will assemble the info.

I really need prevu and would like to see this fixed.

Thanks.

I am now using:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510
Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3

The page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Multilingual_support_(Indic)

is now rendered correctly. The difficulty is that like a person who
wakes up and falls asleep and wakes up and falls asleep again, the Indic
font rendering works and then stops working and then works again. I
suspect that sometimes the Debian/Ubuntu package does not have the
correct options compiled in and at other times it does. A little better
QA during compilation might fix this problem once and for all.

I do not run 8.10 beta and cannot comment on performance using it.

I think you can close this bug for 8.04 because it does not exist at
present.

Thanks.

I have tried the Kubuntu Intrepid Alpha-5 live CD on my Hardy system and
booted into it, running the 2.6.27 kernel.

I am sorry to say that none of the following is recognized either by
Dolphin or by k3b when inserted into the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-110 drive:

(a) recorded CD-R

(b) blank CD-R

(c) audio CD.

It is not merely blank media but also recorded media.

(The new KDE 4.1 desktop does not seem to display inserted media but
that is entirely another issue altogether!)

This bug is threatening to result in serious loss of function if it
continues to persist into Intrepid Ibex.

I could not compile the 2.6.27 kernel using prevu because of failed
dependencies, and cannot comment on the performance of the 2.6.27 kernel
within Hardy.

I am happy to furnish further data if told what to acquire: I really
want to see this bug squashed.

Thanks.

Do I need to run the second kernel in a VirtualBox VM? I have experience
building from Ibex source package in prevu for applications, and running
them, but never building a new kernel, let alone run it. If given a link

Kernel is 2.6.24-19-generic and the workaround line in
/boot/grub/menu/lst is

# defoptions=quiet splash all_generic_ide=1

But that does not render the Pioneer DVD writer functional. Indeed, even
an audio CD cannot be detected on the Pioneer DVD writer, although it is
detected and playable on the Liteon.

Interestingly, on booting, I do not see a menu of choices any more even
though I also have the 2.6.24-16 kernel.

So, is there something even more fundamentally wrong?

Any pointers most appreciated.

I am happy to post more diagnostic information if told what command to
execute.

Many thanks.

[Bug 222944] Re: mailto links in Firefox 3.0b5 do not open up Thunderbird compose windows

2008-07-07 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Comment to Robert Persson:

Assuming that your FF installationuses a new profile, all you have to do
is select

File -> Send Link

You will see a popup window with yahoo as the mail user agent default
choice (for reasons that escape me). You also have the option to choose
another application. Click to choose /usr/bin/thunderbird if that is
your choice.

Also remember to check the box at the bottom of the popup to make this
selection permanent.

You should be set after that.

I think this is not so much a yahoo bug as a perplexing default choice
for the default mail user agent using mailto links from within FF. In
that sense, it is a default option that has been compiled into FF either
by the Mozilla folks, or the Debian folks, or the Ubuntu folks. In any
case, I would have thought that if a web-based mail user agent were
chosen by default, it would be gmail.

[Bug 229745] Re: after fix for #215728 - Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite still causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O (the 2nd)

2008-06-30 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Today, I tried to catch what was going on in my
~/.mozilla/firefox/ while there was loss of responsiveness
and audible/visible disk I/O.

It appears that places.sqlite-journal is being emptied and filled
alternately. This is an extract with timestamps for these two files over
time from successive ls -altr commands:

===
0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal
12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal
12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal
12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal
12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal

12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

0 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite-journal
12894208 2008-07-01 00:18 places.sqlite

===

It appears that places.sqlite-journal is oscillating in size on disk
while places.sqlite does not get changed. The initial and final sizes on
disk for these two files are the same.

What is all the disk I/O resulting in?

If it is nothing (initial and final file sizes are the same), why is it
happening at all?

Can anyone throw any light on what is going on?

Should I be watching other files?

Is this a result of the "awesome bar" feature?

Or could it be an addon that is causing this?

I really wish for a speedy resolution.

Thanks.

I am hesitant to say the problem has been resolved.

I still experience periods where the program does not respond while I/O
activity
is intense. There might be two possible causes, specific to my installation:

1. Something in my user profile from earlier versions of FF which has been
carried over. I know that a mailto fix in user.js for previous versions of FF
caused me some trouble until I got rid of that file in FF-3.0.

2. Some FF addon is causing loss of response.

If I were to switch to a new profile to see if the problem goes away, what
files
can I safely import from my existing profile? More specifically, is there a web
link to change profile cleanly but without too much hardship, so that existing
bookmarks etc. are preserved?

Thanks.

[Bug 240691] [NEW] Please provide source package for libgphoto2 2.4.1

2008-06-17 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

libgphoto2 2.4.1 overcomes a bug affecting Olympus cameras. For details,
please see this thread:

http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/digikam-users/2008-June/005636.html

As long as an Ubuntu or Debian source package is available, I can
compile it using prevu. So, my request is to hasten the Debian/Ubuntu
packaging of source for libgphoto2 2.4.1.

If I need to post elsewhere to the Debian packagers, please tell me
where.

Many thanks.

Because when the computer is unresponsive and I run

top

the first listed process is firefox.

If I then go to ~/.mozilla/firefox/ and do

ls -altr

I see the file

places.sqlite

as the last listed and it changes in size as I view it progressively by
repeating the command. If there is a more sophisticated and foolproof way to
confirm this, perhaps by running some other commands, do let me know and I will
try it and post results.

[Bug 229745] Re: after fix for #215728 - Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite still causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O (the 2nd)

2008-06-14 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
My places.sqlite file has grown to 12107776 bytes and there is still
periodic loss of responsiveness with high CPU usage and concentrated
I/O.

My urlclassifier3.sqlite file is growing only slowly at is 54878208
bytes and does not seem to be the problem.

Perhaps this blog explains what I am experiencing:

Christopher Blizzard » Blog Archive » system components, fsync and
distribution-specific changes: a cautionary tale
http://www.0xdeadbeef.com/weblog/?p=368

I checked my libsqlite3-0 and found it was version was 3.4.2-2.

I have now used prevu to compile version3.5.9-2~8.04prevu1. I do not
know if it will help because the firefox I am using is already compiled
and version 3.0~rc1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1.

But I am sure that it is places.sqlite that is causing loss of
responsiveness.

Any help or light shedded on this is most appreciated.

Thanks.

It appears that on logout, the screen is set for 1600 by 1200 (whereas I
use 1280 by 1024) and this is somehow never set on logout although it is
on reboot or cold start.

The relevant section in

Should I hand edit it to remove "1600x1200"?

2008-05-25 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I have had recent loss of responsiveness in fifefox-3.0b5. Today I
experienced about three minutes of non-repsonsiveness with high CPU load
of about 70% and disk I/O. It seems that this time the file

places.sqlite

is being written to. It size is currently

8626176 2008-05-26 14:13 places.sqlite

FYI, urlclassifier3.sqlite has been stable and still is

52752384 2008-05-26 13:58 urlclassifier3.sqlite

If I do

dpkg -l | grep xulrunner

I get

ii xulrunner 1.8.1.13+nobinonly-0ubuntu1 XUL + XPCOM application runner
ii xulrunner-1.9 1.9~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu4~8.04.0mt1 XUL + XPCOM application
runner

Do I need to remove the first one by any chance.

Are there any workarounds for this?

Thanks.

[Bug 232260] [NEW] Installing luatex causes bugs in texdoc

2008-05-20 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

I have set texdoc environment variables in ~/.bashrc to handle online
display of documentation on my Kubuntu Hardy system so:

TEXDOCVIEW_dvi="/usr/bin/kdvi %s"
export TEXDOCVIEW_dvi

TEXDOCVIEW_pdf="/usr/bin/kpdf %s"
export TEXDOCVIEW_pdf

TEXDOCVIEW_html="firefox %s"
export TEXDOCVIEW_html

After installing luatex, and invoking texdoc for a PDF manual, I got the
error message:

sh: xpdf: not found

The problem disappeared after removal of luatex. So, obviously, there is
some crosstalk betwen luatex and texlive-base-bin which furnishes
texdoc.

For what it is worth, I just checked my /etc/hosts file and found out

Perhaps the first line was a leftover from manually editing the file in

there are any problems arising from this. I do not know the significance
of that first line and believe that localhost recognition now happens
via /etc/network/interfaces.

[Bug 222944] Re: mailto links in Firefox 3.0b5 do not open up Thunderbird compose windows

2008-05-13 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Thank you very much Oliver. I did what you said, but it failed the first
time because I have a user.js file as well in my profile, with the line:

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird");

I had to comment that out. After that your method worked like a charm.
Many thanks :-)

For the record, let me state what prompted my original launchpad bug
report so that it does not get shelved and re-filed in another form:

1. Those of us who used the integrated Netscape, and later the Mozilla,
suite several years ago had seamless integration when clicking a mailto
link in the web browser opened a compose window in the email agent. That
changed when the Mozilla suite was separated into Firefox and
Thunderbird.

2. In Firefox 1.n, this functionality was restored using the method
described at:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Default_mail_client#Setting_email_client_for_Firefox_in_Linux

under the section

"Setting email client for Firefox in Linux"

2. To ensure non-volatility between upgrades (for versions 1.n and 2.n),
I created, in addition, a user.js file in my profile and had in it the
single line:

user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird");

3. After the upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy when Firefox 2.0.0.14 was
changed (without any warning to the user) to Firefox3.0b5, the mailto
links that had been previously set to invoke Thunderbird simply stopped
working. Hence my bug report.

4. For the record, I have also asked the same question as in this bug
at:

http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-
view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=45594&forumId=1

but have received no reply from there. [Oliver, would you like to post
your workaround there please as well, in case it helps others?]

5. Now thanks to Oliver, and his workaround, it appears that the method
of affiliating mimetypes and applications has changed from about:config
settings (they are now not accessible without a warning) and instead
employ the GUI method he has described.

6. As an afterthought, this problem and its solution might also be
applicable to Firefox bugs in which people have reported losing their
settings for helper applications such as PDF viewers.

Thanks to everyone.

[Bug 215728] Re: [MASTER] Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O

2008-05-06 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
No problems, but two questions.

Before the workaround, I had two files:

4970496 2008-04-26 23:42 urlclassifier2.sqlite
23249920 2008-04-27 17:01 urlclassifier3.sqlite

Now that I have installed xulrunner-1.9 version 1.9~b5+nobinonly-
0ubuntu4~8.04.0mt1 from hardy-proposed, I do not have the file

urlclassifier2.sqlite

I only have the file urlclassifier3.sqlite so:

33275904 2008-05-07 10:25 urlclassifier3.sqlite

I have enabled both suspected attack sites and suspected forgery sites.

1. Is this absence of urlclassifier2.sqlite normal behaviour?

2. What does it imply?

Thanks.

[Bug 215728] Re: [MASTER] Committing to urlclassifier3.sqlite causes excessive CPU usage and disk I/O

2008-05-05 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I have added to /etc/apt/sources.list the following two lines:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/ubuntu hardy main

The currently installed packages are:

firefox-3.0_3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
xulrunner-1.9_1.9~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu4~8.04.0mt1_i386.deb

The previously encountered problems have not recurred.

I have one question, though. Having ticked both the "suspected attack
site" and "suspected forgery site" boxes, I find that I now have only

urlclassifier3.sqlite

in my .mozilla/firefox/ directory, and it is growing at a modest
rate. But there is no

urlclassifier2.sqlite

which was one of the files I was advised to delete previously.

Does this have any significance?

Thanks.

2008-04-27 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I can confirm all of the above, especially the hammering of the hard

on Kubuntu.

My packages are:

dpkg -l firefox xulrunner
||/ Name   VersionDescription
+++-==-==-
ii firefox3.0~b5+nobinon meta package for the popular mozilla web bro
un xulrunner (no description available)

with several firefox add-ons.

4970496 2008-04-26 23:42 urlclassifier2.sqlite
23249920 2008-04-27 17:01 urlclassifier3.sqlite

I have now disabled firefox checking for attack sites and suspected
forgery sites in Preferences -> Security.

Is there anything else to be done? I fear for my hard disk.

The peak I/O activity is so intense that I cannot move mouse focus from

[Bug 222944] [NEW] mailto links in Firefox 3.0b5 do not open up Thunderbird compose windows

2008-04-27 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

After upgrading from Kubuntu Gutsy to Hardy (Kubuntu 8.04) and moving
from Firefox 2.0.0.14 to 3.0b5 (from package 3.0~b5+nobinonly-0ubuntu3)
I find that left clicking on mailto links does not open the Thunderbird
2.0.0.12 compose window as it should.

The prefs.js file has these settings:

prefs.js:user_pref("gmanager.compose.mailto", false);
prefs.js:user_pref("gmanager.compose.right-click.mailto", true);
prefs.js:user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto",
"/usr/bin/thunderbird");

The last line also occurs in user.js from previous installations.

What should be done to solve/workaround this problem?

[Bug 222497] [NEW] Please allow upgrade from local ISP archives

2008-04-26 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 222496 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/222496

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

When I tried upgrading Kubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04 in Australia, it
disables my local ISP's K/Ubuntu archives and uses the national archive
for Australia.

It then reports this:

I think the Australian archive was being hammered and could not respond
fast enough.

I have an ISP, iiNeT, in Australia who has update their archive. It is
up-to-date, fast, and free (not counted in my download quota). The
update manager had commented out those entries. Instead, if it had
changed the "gutsy" to "hardy" and tried my local ISP's archive, it
would not have failed and I would be reporting success rather than
failure.

I am happy to work with you to help achieve this if you are willing to
put teh effort nto it.

Many thanks.

[Bug 175909] Re: Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2008-03-23 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Out of curiosity, I just upgraded to KDE 3.5.9, simply to see if the
problem went away, and it has.

I wonder if this information can help track down the cause of this
recalcitrant bug.

Thanks.

[Bug 175909] Re: Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2008-03-09 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I am sorry, the problem has returned.

The administrator button in KDE Control Centre (kcontrol) does not work.
When pressed, there is a "Loading" message and it hangs up after that.
Clicking any other function after that causes the program, to abort.

The workaround

sudo kcontrol

spews error messages like

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-" is owned by uid instead
of uid 0.

but allows administrator tasks like font installation to be done.

Is there any reason why this problem recurs so unpredictably?

I would be glad to see it fixed once and for all.

Thanks.

[Bug 126940] Re: Eyedropper in Colorzilla addon does not work

2008-02-08 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
I can confirm this behaviour and the successful workaround for
firefox-2.0.0.12 in Gutsy and ColorZilla-1.9. I have written a script to
patch the workaround after each update., but it would be nicer and
neater if that were done in the post install script of the package
itself.

Thanks.

[Bug 175909] Re: Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2008-01-25 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
This problem disappeared as mysteriously as it arose. There are two
possible reasons for this as far as I can see:

1. A recent update/upgrade using

sudo apt-get update &&sudo apt-get upgrade

flushed the problem out somehow.

2. The encoding was not set to default on konsole. This was noticeable
when man pages had funny symbols instead of a hyphen. When the encoding
was set back to default, the hyphen issue went away. I cannot be sure if
the administrator button problem disappeared simultaneously.

In any case, the administrator button works now.

[Bug 175909] Administrator button fails to work in kde-settings and kcontrol

2007-12-12 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

This bug is identical to:

Bug #15001, first reported on 2005-04-05 by Aric Wilisch
Administrator mode not working

and solved that year. It has re-surfaced and has also been reported
again by Rohan Dhruva on 30 Nov 07. I can confirm what he has siad at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/15001

but am reporting it as new because the older bug is closed.

It happened out of teh blue on a fresk Kubuntu Gutsy installation.
Action taken included completely re-installing Kubuntu and also

sudo apt-get install --reinstall kcontrol kde-systemsettings

neither of which has helped.

Running either systemsettings or kcontrol from the konsole and clicking
"Administrator Mode" for "Network Setings" does nothing but the console
error messages are:

***

that it is not already running, remove /root/.DCOPserver_kaveri__0
and start dcopserver again.

[Bug 159965] texlive-xetex omits dependency on dvipdfmx

2007-11-04 Thread R (Chandra) Chandrasekhar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-xetex

texlive-xetex version 2007-12ubuntu3 omits dependency on dvipdfmx. This
leads to all sorts of errors if the dvipdfmx package is not installed
independently.

The workaround is to install dvipdfmx.

Another is to backport texlive-xetex version 2007-14ubuntu1 from the
Hardy source archive. The resulting .deb does have this dependency and
will install dvipdfmx automatically.

It would be good to have a patch for texlive-xetex version

I do not understand what you need further. Can you please explain the steps

FYI, the crash itself happened before I had done

sudo prevu-init

before using prevu for the first time. Apparently, that is the very first step
to perform.

I wanted help on what to do and tried

man prevu

and when that failed,

prevu --help

which caused the crash.

I think that the help text should be available to assist someone who has not
used prevu before or forgotten the correct order of the invocation.

Thanks.
