[Bug 1723350] Re: sssd offline on boot, stays offline forever

2018-06-12 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Since my last comment on this bug report (#16), I upgraded my
workstation from artful to bionic. The machine also has an NVME SSD, but
I do not see this sssd offline bug anymore.

However, I had intermittent problems in browsing the shares inside my AD domain
and, when I read here about possible race problems in sssd, I tried to solve
them by putting back in place the systemd workaround of this bug description.
The result is that with the workaround I can always browse the network shares
(I'm using thunar in XFCE4, which in turn uses gvfsd-smb-browse), while without
it I can't see the shares almost all the times. This is a consistent behaviour
that I noticed in the last days and after several reboots of the workstation.
Should this be reported as a different bug?

Note: the samba browsing problem is not related to the Security
Improvements described in the Bionic Release Notes
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BionicBeaver/ReleaseNotes).

The workaround is the systemd unit file written in the Bug Description.
The 'cache credentials' config option does not have any effect on the bug and
for the tests I have disabled it.

@Andreas: thank you for your suggestions. I removed the workaround from

reactivated the workaround and did the same. All the logs are attached

[Bug 1002978] Re: [meta-bug] Inverted Internal microphone (phase inversion)

2012-06-25 Thread Renzo Bagnati
In my case (Acer Aspire 1810TZ) the alsa-hda-dkms_0.1_all.deb does not solve
the problem. I can see the inverted internal mic in alsamixer, but I cannot
edit it (see screenshot). I cannot see any microphone activity in the audio
settings window (and in skype), unless I mute one channel with pavucontrol.
However when I use gnome-sound-recorder I can register sounds out of the box,
but this worked also without alsa-hda-dkms.

2012-05-21 Thread Renzo Bagnati
The internal microphone is missing from my Acer Aspire 1810TZ and the
workaround of comment #32 restores it in the sound settings dialog.
However, to make the microphone effectively work, I have to unlock the input
channels with pavucontrol and set them to different levels, as described here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/449855/comments/41 (not
only for skype, but for other applications also).

I observed the same behaviour on a ThinkPad T61, but after installation,
not on live session. The list of access points was not visible on first
login, but it was after logging out and in. However, after reinstalling
the system with a new image cd (14-Apr-2012), I'm no more able to
reproduce the bug.

[Bug 956848] Re: pam_mkhomedir.so fails to create homedir in precise

2012-03-26 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Same problem here:
lightdm hangs immediately after entering the password and displays a black
screen.
After killing lightdm I can see that the home directory was not created.
Instead this works well when using GDM or a console login.
The bug can be reproduced in this way for a local user: just delete or move its
home directory, add the line below to /etc/pam.d/common-session and try to
login with lightdm.

session required pam_mkhomedir.so umask=0022 skel=/etc/skel

The bug affects precise (lightdm 1.1.9-0ubuntu1), but not oneiric
(lightdm 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.6).

[Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2012-03-09 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Are there any plans to address this bug for unity-2d, after having marked it as
critical? Recently the resize grips in the bottom right corner have been
entirely removed from precise, leaving the resize process of windows very
difficult in unity-2d.
I use the attached script (50_light-themes-borders) in /etc/X11/Xsession.d to
copy the Ambiance and Radiance themes to the $HOME/.themes user directory and
then modify the border width to 3 pixels, for normal frame geometry. The
modifications are made only if unity-2d session is used and are reverted for
other sessions. However the script may break if changes are made to the
original themes. There must be surely a better way to do this...

Using the overlay scrollbar to resize is not very intuitive and can be
used only to drag horizontally. Moreover the scrollbar is visible only
if the window has a scrollable content, hence is not a general solution.

You can create a file named .gtkrc-2.0 in your home directory and put
the same content reported in the bug description, i.e.:

style default-style
{
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-height = 0
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-width = 0
}

class GtkWidget style default-style

This will disable the resize grips for all applications, without the need to
use personalized launchers.

[Bug 851347] Re: pam_group not working at all

2011-10-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
With regard to Bug #856269 , which is marked as duplicate of this one, I have
found that when the password of a domain user is expired, lightdm still does
not present the correct steps to change the password.
Here is what happens (lightdm messages are inside ):

1 -  --  (first enter expired password);
2 - (current) NT password -- (expired password)
3 - Retype new NT password -- (new password)
4 - Invalid password, please try again

There is a step missing between 2 and 3, and it should be Enter new NT
password.
Also lightdm should display, before step 2, a message saying that the password
is expired and need to be changed.

Using su in a text console to login, the correct password changing dialog is
presented:

renzo@vmo-amb20:~$ su rbag
Password:
You need to change your password now
Changing password for rbag
(current) NT password:
Enter new NT password:
Retype new NT password:
rbag@vmo-amb20:/home/renzo$

Should I report a new bug?

[Bug 856269] [NEW] lightdm does not ask for a new password with pam_winbind or pam_krb5 authentications when the password is expired

2011-09-22 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Public bug reported:

I'm using an up-to-date oneiric workstation joined through samba and
winbind to an AD domain controlled by a Windows server.

When the password of a domain user is expired and when pam_winbind is
used as first authentication, lightdm does not ask for a new password
and does not allow to login, displaying the message Invalid password,
please try again.

Instead, when pam_krb5 is used as first authentication, lightdm asks two
times for a password (Enter it again:) and then allows to login even
if the password is expired.

When using a text console to login, the password changing dialog is
immediately presented (as it happens in natty with gdm).

[Bug 850298] [NEW] lightdm requires to enter the password twice to login in an AD domain when the password is in expiration period or when using cached_login

2011-09-14 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Public bug reported:

I'm using an up-to-date oneiric workstation joined through samba and winbind to
an AD domain controlled by a Windows server.
Login as domain users is possible without problems in normal conditions, using
a pam configuration like this in /etc/pam/common-auth:

authpam_winbind.so krb5_auth krb5_ccache_type=FILE cached_login

However, when the domain password is in expiration period (defaults to
14 days before) or when using cached_login (when the network is
unavailable), the password must be entered twice in lightdm to
effectively start the user session.

Here is an example of what happens, with lines copied from
/var/log/auth.log

...[enter password for the first time in lightdm login screen]

Sep 14 17:03:49 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:session): session opened
for user lightdm by (uid=0)
Sep 14 17:03:50 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_succeed_if(lightdm:auth): requirement
user ingroup nopasswdlogin not met by user rbag
Sep 14 17:03:50 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_winbind(lightdm:auth): getting password
(0x0380)
Sep 14 17:04:00 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_winbind(lightdm:auth): user 'rbag'
granted access

...[lightdm does not display any message and just clears the password box]
...[enter password for the second time and login session starts]

Sep 14 17:04:04 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:session): session closed
for user lightdm
Sep 14 17:04:04 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_winbind(lightdm:setcred): user 'lightdm'
OK
Sep 14 17:04:04 vmo-amb20 lightdm: pam_unix(lightdm:session): session opened
for user rbag by (uid=0)

If I use a text console this does not happen and I can login normally as
a domain user; the screen just shows a warning about the days before
password expiration or about the unavailability of a network connection.

[Bug 791336] Re: Add support for Samba's Active Directory integration

2011-09-14 Thread Renzo Bagnati
I'm using, since ubuntu 8.04, samba and winbind to integrate a workstation into
an AD domain, as described here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto
I'm able to use gdm, and now lightdm, to login as a domain user, by
authenticating with pam_winbind or pam_krb5.

The only problem I have found so far with lightdm is reported here:

[Bug 749986] Re: Resizing LO window from bottom right brings up pop-up and undesirable effects

2011-06-05 Thread Renzo Bagnati
As a temporary workaround, the resize grips in libreoffice can be
disabled by using a custom gtkrc file and calling it from the command
line. For example, create a .gtkrc-2.0__libreoffice file in your home
directory, with the following content:

style default-style
{
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-height = 0
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-width = 0
}

class GtkWidget style default-style

and then launch libreoffice writer (or another component) with the command:
GTK2_RC_FILES=.gtkrc-2.0__libreoffice libreoffice -writer

This disables the resize grips, but only works from the command line.
To make it work for the gui launchers we have to modify all the libreoffice
.desktop files.
I have written a shell script to do this (to be run with sudo). It must also be
run after every upgrade of libreoffice packages or appropriately copied to
/etc/rc.local, if you prefer.
The script makes backup copies of the original .desktop files, in the case
something goes wrong.
It works for me, but it should be probably tested by someone else.

[Bug 749986] Re: Windows resize problem

2011-04-21 Thread Renzo Bagnati
This happens when using the resize grips implemented on GtkWindow for GTK+.
In libreoffice, dragging the window with the grip, displays the 'File' menu and
blocks the resizing process (see the attached screenshot).
Since dragging with the window borders is working well, the resize grip should
be disabled in libreoffice, until the bug is fixed.

[Bug 356702] Re: Tooltips stick when switching desktops (Compiz)

2010-09-28 Thread Renzo Bagnati
There is already an explanation of the bug and a patch to solve it (comment
#52).
There are also packages for lucid on a PPA (comment #59) which work well for me
and for others.
I'm using these packages since months and did not find particular problems.
However it seem that upstream developers do not like the patch...

[Bug 529696] Re: brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2010-09-13 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Brasero and cdrdao have been upgraded in maverick to versions 2.31.91-0ubuntu2
and 1:1.2.3-0.1ubuntu1, respectively.
However the plugin window of brasero still says that the cdrdao version is too
old ...

[Bug 613371] [NEW] Login is not possible in gdm when the user password is in pre-expiration period

2010-08-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Login is not possible in gdm when the user password is in pre-expiration
period

With an up-to-date maverick system, integrated in an Active Directory network,
the login of domain users with gdm is not possible when the password is in the
pre-expiration period.
After the insertion of the password (not yet expired), the gdm screen freezes,
showing a warning about the future password expiration (see screenshot). The
same user can instead login using the console.
Local users and domain users, whose password are not in pre-expiration period,
can login normally.
The AD integration of the system was done with winbind and PAM modules.

gdm 2.30.2.is.2.30.2-0ubuntu3
libpam0g 1.1.1-3ubuntu3

[Bug 114620] Re: GDM has no change password option

2010-08-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
In my setup within an AD network, when my password is in the expiration period
I can barely see the warning in the GDM login window for a fraction of a
second. A normal user would not even notice it.
Introducing the option of changing the password when it is in the expiration
period would also allow a user to be notified of this.

[Bug 529696] Re: brasero can't copy audio cd (useless error message)

2010-06-04 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Upstream developers have already stated in comment 4 of the relative bug
(https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=617222) that:
it turns out that cdrdao 1.2.2 recognizes cdrdao version as an illegal
command and since brasero expect a precise string for parsing version, and in
the case of 1.2.2 it does not get it, it fails.
and that:
The plugin associated with cdda2wav was designed to work with the cdda2wav
coming from the cdrtools package. Up until now, it would refuse to work if it
turned out cdda2wav was a symlink Now I turned off this mechanism just for
cdda2wav plugin in next version which means that it should work with a symlink
to icedax now.

So it seems that the kernel has nothing to do with this bug and we need
updated versions of brasero and cdrdao to solve it.

[Bug 569195] [NEW] can't read battery state

2010-04-23 Thread Renzo Bagnati
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: conky

After upgrading from conky-all_1.8.0-1 to conky-all_1.8.0-1ubuntu1 the
'battery_bar' object always returns an empty value.
The 'battery' and 'battery_time' objects, instead, return the correct values.

Running conky 1.8.0-1ubuntu1 on the same system:

Conky: window type - normal
Conky: drawing to created window (0x181)
