[Bug 1071120] [NEW] Flash Content Causes Excessive CPU Load

2012-10-24 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 12.10, Firefox 16.0.1+build1-0ubuntu1, ubuntu-restricted-extras
57.

I'm filing this against Ubuntu's firefox package because I cannot
reproduce it in other Firefox builds (I have not tried from source in
Ubuntu yet). Furthermore, chromium-browser does not experience this
issue.

On both my Asus G71GX and HP Mini 1010NR, Firefox consumes 70-100+% CPU
load (as seen from top) when flash content is displayed. I have Flash
installed via ubuntu-restricted-extras. Please let me know what other
details I can provide.

[Bug 1011031] [NEW] Item Selection Tooltip Masks Last Item in List View

2012-06-09 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

When you select an item in Nautilus, a Tooltip appears with information
about the file you just selected. The tooltip is persistent, and appears
in the lower right of the window.

example.

[Bug 885525] [NEW] Deleting a Gmail Message Always Sends Item to [Gmail]/Trash

2011-11-02 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Thunderbird 7.0.1, Ubuntu 11.10

Gmail accounts do not obey the setting in Account Settings -- [Account]
-- Server Settings -- When I delete a message

I changed this to move the message to Gmail's All Mail folder,
attempting to imitate the Gmail web interface's Archive option.
However, regardless of setting, the item always moved to Trash. This
persisted after restart of the client. The settings save, but have no
effect.

Caveat: This was tested on two Google Apps for Domains accounts, though
I suspect this behavior will happen with gmail.com accounts as well.

[Bug 885554] [NEW] mysql-server-5.1 Unpacking Halts 11.04-11.10 Server Upgrade

2011-11-02 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

During do-release-upgrade, the following output occurs:

Preparing to replace mysql-server 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_all.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-server ...

Unpacking replacement psmisc ...
Preparing to replace mysql-server-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...

The upgrade halts there indefinitely. I issued a service mysql stop and
then output continued:

mysql stop/post-start, (post-start) process 19685
Unpacking replacement mysql-server-5.1 ...
Preparing to replace mysql-server-core-5.1 5.1.54-1ubuntu4 (using
.../mysql-server-core-5.1_5.1.58-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement mysql-server-core-5.1 ...

The rest of the upgrade seems to be passing without incident. Can
someone confirm this bug? It seems odd that mysql would have a problem
stopping itself to allow the upgrade, but that is apparently the case.
It is worth nothing this appears to not be a new issue. See:

2011-09-19 Thread Ron Adams
The message is still repeating across the console screen, but I can now
login and fully use the server, it seems. I'm unsure what changed,
though I did see messages from fsck-ng about repairing errors in my
btrfs partition, but they went by too quickly, and I'm unsure where that
was logged (maybe in an already rotated syslog?)

Adding some logs, hoping they're helpful. I can't seem to get apport-
collect to send anything to this report.

This bug was filed against an Ubuntu release that is no longer

This bug occurred in the release image of Natty, installed from the CD.
As I said in the first line: Ubuntu Server 11.04, x64.

Why is this being tagged Jaunty?

Also, I cannot run apport-collect, because I can't boot the system to
any usable shell.

[Bug 658738] Re: No way to set clock to 24-hour format on Netbook Edition 10.10

2011-02-05 Thread Ron Adams
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 579134 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/579134

I must agree with Doc; this is not a duplicate of bug #579134. There is
no reason whatsoever to constrain a user from toggling the time display
format. Consider a military deployment, where English may be the locale
but 24h may be the clock standard. Also, consider the user like me, who
simply prefers the 24h clock format, but wants everything else in
standard English (American) format.

I get this when visiting https://apac.globalsign.com/repository/:
Technical Details
apac.globalsign.com uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is not trusted.
(Error code: sec_error_untrusted_issuer)

Something odd is happening here. I expect this is the fault of Ubuntu's
64-bit build of firefox (or NSS?), but I need triaging from someone else
with 64-bit Ubuntu.

[Bug 124933] Re: [needs-packaging] flock

2009-04-09 Thread Ron Adams
Marcus from Flock dev reported a few interesting points that I think bear
repeating here:
'Sulfur' is not a code name, it is the the unbranded version you are looking
for..

I have expended effort in removing proprietary logos, images and text
from this unbranded build, but that task is not complete. I also watch
the commits to try to catch any hard-coding of the work Flock in new
code...

Note that it is not only Flock IP that may turn up, it is also Mozilla
IP. Both need to be taken care of.

While not related to branding, there is a second point worth
mentioning: Ubuntu would like to package Flock as XULRunner application,
to avoid repetitive inclusion of common code. Flock uses a modified
XULRunner code base, which makes circumventing that redundancy non-
trivial.

Personally, I have always wanted to see a proper Ubuntu package for Flock; it's
just not that easy. I'm available and willing to help, but my primary
obligation is of course to do the things that Flock, the company, wants to see
move forward.

So it looks like what we need is:
1) An answer from MOTU on how they feel about divorcing flock-browser (let's be
clear on referencing the package name henceforth flock is of course out of
the question! ;) ) from XULRunner so that the customized XULRunner can coexist
with the default library other XULRunner apps are using

2) Contributions to the Flock team by interested parties wanting to help
root the IP out of the Sulfur (i.e., non-branded) build

3) ???

4) Profit!

I'm guessing from what's been said here that MOTU will want to refer
this upstream, though I don't know how much interest there is at that
level. I'm interested, but am way behind on the packaging side of
things, and have a number of items on my plate as it is, so if anyone
out there is up for stepping up to this, that'd be swell.

[Bug 298598] [NEW] Thunderbird: Installing Lightning Extension Causes UI Problems

2008-11-15 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

Installing the extension Lightning really screws up the UI of
Thunderbird: certain dialogs are missing information (such as the
specific hours when selecting workweek times), the calendars don't
display properly at all (always appear to be a single column with no
date), and various other abnormalities. I found that the issue is the
package libstdc++5 is required for proper functioning of lightning. The
package lightning-extension requires libstdc++6, but this does not
satisfy the extension and make it properly work. Furthermore, any
requirements placed on that package are not going to be applied if a
user installs the extension from Mozilla, which is how most users
install Thunderbird extensions. I don't know why libstdc++6 does not
work for Lightning; perhaps if someone could figure that out we could
patch either libstdc or Thunderbird in some way.

[Bug 217135] [NEW] sound-juicer doesn't allow creation of new profiles

2008-04-14 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

When I try to make a new profile for output format in sound-juicer, it
does not allow me to select it as the preferred format, even if I check
the active box. I reinstalled the gstreamer plugins, which re-created
the original (FLAC, ogg, speex, WAV) profiles, but nothing re-creates
the MP3 profiles. If I make them myself, either through sound-juicer or
using a script like
[url=http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2009576postcount=2]this
one[/url], they are never recognized in sound-juicer, even though I set
their permissions the same as the others in that folder.

Attached is an example mp3 profile not accessible via the menu (gnome-
audio-profiles-properties), even though it is correct.

[Bug 155130] Ubuntu Studio usplash Fails to Prompt for Passphrase for Encrypted LVMs

2007-10-20 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntustudio-desktop

To Reproduce:

1) On given hard drive, run Ubuntu x86 alternate installer and partition as
thus:
/boot

volume_for_encryption (default settings)
   - LVM
  - /
  -/other_mount_points

2) At first boot, Ubuntu's usplash pauses load and prompts for
passphrase. Upon successful entry of passphrase, Ubuntu continues
loading.

3) Install ubuntustudio-desktop, which replaces Ubuntu's usplash with
Ubuntu Studio's

4) Restart. Ubuntu Studio's usplash will hang on loading, incrementing
the progress bar very slowly, but never giving an opportunity to enter a
passphrase for the encrypted volume.

5) Press ALT+F1. Console will report it is attempting to mount the
encrypted volume, but never prompt for passphrase.

Recommend triaging for critical, as this wrecks a functional install,
requiring either re-install or rescue with a separate OS (cannot be
repaired in same OS as problem exists).

Not tried:
1) Repeat steps 1-3 above, then manually reset the usplash to the Ubuntu
default.
2) Install with Ubuntu Studio Gutsy, and setup encrypted volumes there (not
even sure if it allows for it).

final... don't forget to remove docklet.so... leaving deprecated plugins
in loaded is bad code!

[Bug 144122] Re: Pidgin 2.2.0 Forgets Plugin Selections (Ubuntu Gusty x86 Tribe 5)

2007-09-25 Thread Ron Adams
Odd... can someone verify? I'm not at home at the moment. If it doesn't
work, then at least the prefs.xml is solid, and should be repackaged
with pidgin-data..

Note that you should also remove the item docklet.so.

A few last clarifying points:
The prefs.xml in /etc/purple/prefs.xml is just a template for default prefs
(like when you create a new user, or delete your own prefs.xml in your home
folder). Pidgin writes preference changes on a per-account basis, in
~/.purple/prefs.xml when the program closes. This is why I was initially so
confused about the problem, because I thought the prefs.xml was changing
correctly, but it was not. You can not change the prefs.xml with Pidgin open;
it will revert. Also, this bug DOES affect ALL Gusty users: I believe those
this did not happen to were users who had manually installed Pidgin or grabbed
a .deb of it before upgrading to Gusty (when I was on amd64, this is what I had
done). I believe this bug only affects those who will be installing Pidgin for
the first time with Gusty.

This patch should be immediately applied to the appropriate repository.

[Bug 144122] Re: Pidgin 2.2.0 Forgets Plugin Selections (Ubuntu Gusty x86 Tribe 5)

2007-09-24 Thread Ron Adams
A fix has been located. However, I am hesitant to call this issue
closed. Let me explain:

I found a Tribe 5 x86 user with a working prefs.xml (rsk in #ubuntu+1).
Checking his vs. mine, there was a very important difference:
pref name='plugins'
pref name='loaded' type='pathlist'
item value='/usr/lib/purple-2/autoaccept.so'/
item value='/usr/lib/pidgin/notify.so'/
item value='/usr/lib/purple-2/ssl-nss.so'/
item value='/usr/lib/pidgin/pidginrc.so'/
item value='/usr/lib/purple-2/ssl.so'/
/pref
/pref

Versus mine:
pref name='plugins'
pref name='loaded' type='stringlist'
item value='/usr/lib/pidgin/docklet.so'/
item value='/usr/lib/pidgin/notify.so'/
/pref
/pref

Note that when I used his, new plugins would appear as loaded whenever I
added some, or would be removed from the list when deselected. With
mine, the list always appeared as above. Changing my type to pathlist
would only make it revert, as would adding any plugins. What I finally
had to do was change it to:

pref name='plugins'
pref name='loaded' type='pathlist'

/pref
/pref

After relaunching Pidgin, I could re-add the two items, and any plugins
would automatically move in/out of the list as expected.

This fix was confirmed *to an extent* by a Fedora Core 7 user, Joseph
Adams. He did NOT have docklet automatically added to his prefs. It is
our suspicion that docklet.so may be the offending lib. Perhaps it was
still being utilized/looked for after the closing of Pidgin, thus the
forceful reversion to the non-working stringlist type? But why would
that happen initially at all?

Keep in mind the second time I tested this was on a fresh install with no
additional packages loaded.
What is this docklet.so? dpkg -S docklet.so returns no results, and with good
reason: /usr/lib/Pidgin/docklet.so does not exist! There is some discussion on
developer.pidgin.im about making Pidgin more aware and able to utilize X11's
docklet. Can anyone provide more information about docklet.so, and any possible
role it played in this issue?

[Bug 144122] Re: Pidgin 2.2.0 Forgets Plugin Selections (Ubuntu Gusty x86 Tribe 5)

2007-09-24 Thread Ron Adams
Talking with deryni in #pidgin on freenode, he indicated the root of the
issue: /etc/purple/prefs.xml

The file there is the default prefs, and it's faulty. It needs to be
fixed. Here is the pidgin-developer approved patch. This should replace
that file. Note that docklet.so was an old plugin for the tray icon; it
has been deprecated and should not appear in the prefs.xml at all.

I have included a patched pidgin-data.deb. The only file changed is the
/etc/purple/prefs.xml.

The real question is: who else has this bad prefs, and why don't all
Gusty users have it?

2007-09-23 Thread Ron Adams
!confirm location of plugins: /usr/lib/purple-2/

This does not seem to occur under Gusty amd64 Tribe 4-5 (tested
previously, confirmed independently).

Can anyone confirm this, and perhaps show a compdiff of the prefs.xml,
or some of the source?

[Bug 144122] Pidgin 2.2.0 Forgets Plugin Selections (Ubuntu Gusty x86 Tribe 5)

2007-09-22 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pidgin

1) Open Pidgin
2) Select Plugins
3) Close Pidgin
4) Open Pidgin. Plugin selections are forgotten, preferences remembered.

Additionally:
-My prefs.xml: http://pastebin.org/3072
-When I select additional plugins, they correctly appear in prefs.xml under
loaded

This seems to occur whether Pidgin crashes or is closed correctly.

[Bug 50830] Google Browser Sync Will Not Connect

2006-06-23 Thread Ron Adams
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

The Google Browser Sync Extension for Firefox fails to connect. I have
used this extension extensively on other Linux and Windows machines,
including the Windows partition on this machine, under the same
connection I am currently using.

I am aware the GBS extension is supposed to be OS agnostic, but only on
Ubuntu 6.06 have I not been able to connect. I have tried reinstalling
the extension, and tested it on 1.5 stable and the latest stable FF,
1.5.0.4.

Can anyone second this experience?
