[Bug 1294675] Re: [lubuntu trusty] Gnome mplayer crashes when reproducing streamed .mp3 files

2015-05-10 Thread Ross Gammon
What do you mean reproduce a .mp3 file with Firefox? According to the
crash report, you tried to play an mp3 file from the internet?

Can you provide an up to date link to a file that crashes for you? The
link in the Bug Description is broken.

[Bug 1322689] Re: gnome-mplayer crashed with SIGSEGV

2015-05-10 Thread Ross Gammon
I was not able to recreate the crash in gnome-player 1.0.9 (Ubuntu
14.10). I did not have a mkv file, so I converted one using handbrake.

Do you still have this problem? If so, are you able to link to a file
that crashes for you?

[Bug 1286660] Re: gnome-mplayer crashes when trying to play video file

2015-05-10 Thread Ross Gammon
Version 1.0.9 has now been released (it is in Ubuntu 14.10 which I am
using). Are you able to test if it crashes in this new version? Are you
able to attach a small example file that causes the crash?

I am not sure what you mean. Are you saying that in the Preferences you
cannot select /dev/dvd as the default optical device? I am able to
select it in gnome-mplayer 1.0.9 (Ubuntu 14.10).

[Bug 1433445] Re: Trackpoint button mappings incorrect for Lenovo T550, X1 Carbon G3

2015-05-07 Thread Ross Grady
Problem resolved upstream -- details here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88609

An easier temporary workaround is to create a file in /etc/modprobe.d/
called psmouse.conf and put the following line in it:

options psmouse proto=imps

Then do sudo update-initramfs -u

I'm hopeful that the patch from freedesktop.org will be backported to
Trusty's kernel soon.

[Bug 1450156] [NEW] kernel 3.16.0-36 won't boot on Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3rd Gen

2015-04-29 Thread Ross Grady
Public bug reported:

Brand new install. I have several of these machines all have been
happy on 3.16.0-34. Today I did an install the post-install updates
picked up 3.16.0-36 now it won't boot successfully -- black screen,
backlight still lit, no response to any keyboard input.

I downloaded installed the current mainline upstream kernel it works
fine.

[Bug 1414930] Re: [Lenovo ThinkPad 2015 models] Buttons of Synaptics trackpad doesn't work

2015-04-16 Thread Ross Grady
Is this kernel patch going to be backported to Trusty LTS? If so, will
that be sooner or later? I have 24 machines to set up, and 15.04 isn't a
supported config at my workplace because they only support LTS releases.

Thanks!

[Bug 1441154] Re: Built in Apport-Like Bug and Suggestion Reporting Tool Needed

If this is a separate 'app' then it would need to be installed by
default. I'm in favour of Wayne's proposal. Apport is a good model for
bug reporting, but we need to think about how we'd implement the
suggestion feature.

[Bug 1090518] Re: GTK-integration for Qt is broken

2015-03-17 Thread Ross Gammon
A google of this error message shows that many others are affected by the same
problem. There are workarounds you can try in your program.
According to this bug there is a fix released for the Qt4-x11:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt4-x11/+bug/805303
However, you have installed QT from source (not installed the Ubuntu package),
so you would need to investgate if applying the same patch in that bug to your
locally installed copy fixes it.

[Bug 1083264] Re: Intermittant Corrupted screen, constant flash crashes/ plug-in issues, can't find start or many other things, new to ubuntu but everything was fine'til upgrade. I was talked into

2015-03-16 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi,
I am sorry to read about your problems. This bug is quite old now, and I am not
sure it is actually a bug. Are you still having these problems?
It looks as if you had something installed that was conflicting with other
packages, causing them to be removed.
If you are new to Ubuntu and can easily backup the data you want to keep to
another disk, it might be best to try a fresh install of the latest Ubuntu,
rather than doing an upgrade.
These types of problems are generally best dealt with by asking on the Ubuntu
Forums for help:
http://ubuntuforums.org/
Normally someone there will be able to help you track down the problem, and if
it is a bug, help you find the exact software package to report the bug against.

[Bug 1071881] Re: Installer can't mount DVD after converting image

2015-03-14 Thread Ross Gammon
This bug did not receive much attention so far, probably because it was not
assigned to a package where it would hopefully be looked by someone with some
expertise in the area.
Converting it to a question does not seem quite right, and I don't really have
the knowledge to know whether it is a bug or not. The original reporter
obviously thinks it is a bug, as the status was set back to New.
I will convert it back to a bug, so that it can be assigned to a package where
someone may be better able to help.

[Bug 1048780] Re: Updating some packages in 10.04 LTS creates /etc/nologin file and therefore makes you unable to ever log into the system again

2015-03-09 Thread Ross Gammon
Are you sure this is a bug?
Searching the internet shows many people asking the same question as you, and
the answer seems to be that it was probably a failed shutdown that caused the
issue.
Apparently, the shutdown script creates the file to prevent a fresh login while
the system shuts down. The script normally removes the file at the end of the
shutdown process.
Does the problem reoccur, or was it a one-off?

[Bug 1389843] Re: Remove gpxviewer from vivid

2015-03-07 Thread Ross Gammon
gpxviewer depending on the old version of osmgpsmap (0.7.3) is still blocking
the new osmgpsmap (1.0.2) from leaving vivid-proposed. This is causing multiple
bugs to be reported in Gramps:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gramps/+bug/1395392
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gramps/+bug/1401789
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gramps/+bug/1428375
This was a problem in Utopic, and is about to be a problem in vivid.
The maintainer of gpxviewer (also upstream) has produced a new package for the
Debian Python Applications Team (DPAT), and is awaiting sponsorship:
http://anonscm.debian.org/viewvc/python-apps/packages/gpxviewer/trunk/debian/
Either this latest gpxviewer should uploaded in debian, and quickly synced to
vivid, or gpxviewer should be removed.

[Bug 1427444] Re: gramps -i FILE doesn't use temp db as documented

2015-03-07 Thread Ross Gammon
Yes it looks like the manpage should be updated.
The removal of the .gramps directory is not necessary to reproduce it.
Basically, if gramps is run with the -i option without specifying a database to
import into with the -o option, a new database is created with the name Family
Tree 1. If you do the same command again, a new database is created called
Family Tree 2. These databases are not temporary, and do not get deleted
(which I think is a desirable behaviour!).

Having said that, I am not sure which is the right package to assign this bug

[Bug 410288] Re: Nautilus does not handle FTP timeouts well

2015-03-05 Thread Ross Lagerwall
See the bottom of the log: Attempt to unlock mutex that was not locked

The problem is that glib 2.42, used in Ubuntu 14.10 became more strict
about lock checking, and you're using a version of gvfs from a older
version of GNOME which had a locking bug. See this commit
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gvfs/commit/?id=2153d300f24d3388d7c4ab75a55451ad5a581b5a

Unfortunately, mixing and matching bits from different GNOME releases
can cause problems...

For a solution, you could ask the Ubuntu maintainers to add that patch.

[Bug 992440] Re: Bioconductor/R desinstallation

2015-03-04 Thread Ross Gammon
It can happen sometimes that package names can change, and packages can
conflict with each other, and during an upgrade get removed.
There are ways to work out what happened by looking at the logs for the package
management software, but as the bug is quite old, and you were able to install
what you needed again anyway, I am marking the bug as invalid so that it will
be closed.
For the future, it is probably better to choose the update-manager package to
file the bug against if something goes wrong in the upgrade.

jimav said : Should vivid use the new version 4.1.2? It sounds like they

Generally, packages come to Ubuntu via Debian, and Debian is in deep
freeze at the moment (due to the hopefully imminent release of Debian
Jessie). Therefore, only targated patches for specific release critical
bugs are getting through.

Once Jessie is released, I hope to package 4.1.2 and upload it to

[Bug 1427374] Re: many gtk deprecation discouraged warnings

2015-03-02 Thread Ross Gammon
I certainly didn't see this number of errors when I tested Gramps in
Debian unstable (only a couple) - but I am checking now in vivid. Can
you tell me roughly which actions you were performing to generate the
errors?

For the record, can you also paste the output of $gramps -v so we have a
record of which version of gtk gramps is seeing?

It is unlikely at this stage of the vivid cycle that these can be fixed.
But I have heard that Gramps upstream have had issues with the gtk
version currently in Debian Ubuntu, and have reported some bugs
upstream to gnome that have not yet made it into Debian. The errors are
warning that some functions are deprecated, but the functionality is
still there. But eventually something should be done.

[Bug 1427374] Re: many gtk deprecation discouraged warnings

2015-03-02 Thread Ross Gammon
I failed to get my vivid installation working before bedtime, so I
checked in Debian unstable again.

For me, there is only one deprecation warning if I just run gramps, open
an existing empty database, and then immediately quit. The only
difference between our gramps -v is the gtk verison (3.14.5 for me and
3.14.7 for you).

Anyway, thanks for the extra info. Marking the bug confirmed.

Whoops - our messages crossed in the post!

Thanks for reporting, and forwarding upstream. No need to paste gramps
-v here, I can see that you did that in the upstream bug.

I would like to know the types of things you were doing in gramps as you
got these errors though.

This is a very old bug. I am sorry it never received any attention, but this is
probably because it was never assigned to the right package.
If the problem has gone away, you do not need to do anything, the bug will
eventually expire. If you are still having the problem, could let us know what
version of Ubuntu you are running now.

[Bug 1426144] [NEW] Python 3 database upgrade renders gramps unusable for languages other than English

2015-02-26 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

Version 4.1.1~dfsg-2 of Gramps is now using Python 3. Upgrading to
Python 3 requires a database upgrade, and unfortunately there are
several bugs caused by strings being converted in the ASCII format
during the upgrade instead of the required Unicode.

After that, Gramps is unusable for users with special (non-English)
characters in their database.

The bug has been fixed by the Gramps Project, and a patch applied in
Debian. I will apply the same patch in Ubuntu and recommend that it is
uploaded before the Vivid (15.04) release despite the current freeze.

[Bug 1408107] Re: Can't remove huge files from samba share on first attempt - Input/output error

2015-02-18 Thread Ross Lagerwall
Unfortunately, gvfs can't control the timeouts that libsmbclient uses. I
recommend filing a bug at https://bugzilla.samba.org/ or asking a
question on the mailing list:
https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Alternatively, you could try poke about on the router and see what is
happening, e.g. if the server crashes or something.

[Bug 1408107] Re: Can't remove huge files from samba share on first attempt - Input/output error

2015-02-17 Thread Ross Lagerwall
I don't think this is a gvfs issue, the timeout is coming from
libsmbclient which gvfs uses to communicate with the server. Deleting a
file should be quick though so timing out is strange.

How long does it take to timeout? Maybe there's something strange
happening like the server crashing which causes the connection to
timeout?

This is the interesting bit from the logs, where two stat() calls in a
row give different results:

Then mount the smb share, reproduce the problem, and then upload log.txt
in your home directory so we can see a log of what is happening.

Nah, neither of them have the required patches (which made only made it
into 1.20.3). It's an idle timeout issue, so it depends one the activity
on the share.

[Bug 1416607] [NEW] nautilus won't rename any file - ignores all keyboard input

2015-01-30 Thread Ross Gayler
Public bug reported:

Possible regression of Bug #1322925

I have been using nautilus with no problems on this PC (ubuntu 14.10 amd64)
since October 2014.
I just succesfully renabmed one file with nautilus and went to rename another.
The rename dialog box came up with the file name and everything I type from the
keyboard is ignored in the dialog box (cut and paste shortcuts and straight
text are ignored). The same thing applies to trying to change the file name via
the properties dialog.

Every file and folder I have tried to rename gives me the same problem
(I am able to rename the same files from the command line with mv).

The following things have NOT fixed the problem:
* Start a new instance of nautilus
* Log out and back
* Reboot the system
* Re-install nautilus

So until there is a fix this appears to be permanently broken for me.

Everything else in nautilus appears to be OK (as far as I can tell so
far).

I tagged this bug as verification-done, but had second thoughts: I've
only tested on trusty, not utopic, and it would be good to have
confirmation from somebody who uses OpenPGP smartcards.

[Bug 1407155] Re: package gramps 4.1.1~dfsg-2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 139

2015-01-06 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Cliff,

Thanks for reporting this.

I just set up a vivid machine, and I cannot reporoduce this because
gramps installed just fine for me.

Looking at the logs attached to your report, it looks like
py3compile/python3.4 crashed when the postinstall script was run. There
was a problem before Christmas in Debian Unstable where py3compile did
not like the unusual filenames used by the gramps plugins/addons. This
was fixed by one of the python maintainers patching py3compile.

It is possible that this version of py3compile has now been synced to
Vivid and the problem has gone away.

Can you confirm that Gramps installs okay for you now?

Regards,

Ross

[Bug 1401789] Re: gramps package is missing dependencies

2014-12-13 Thread Ross Gammon
Thanks for reporting this.

Just in case you are not aware, Gramps can work perfectly fine without
these two optional dependencies. If you do not need to work with the
metadata of media objects within Gramps, just place a tick in the
GExiv2 warning that pops up and the message will not appear the next
time you start Gramps. If you do not record the latitude and longitude
for each place you enter in Gramps, and don't use the Geography view to
see where each place is on a map, then you can do the same with the
OsmGpsMap message.

If you would like to work with media metadata within Gramps, just
install the gir1.2-gexiv2-0.10 package.

Unfortunately, if you would like to use the Geography View, it is not so easy.
I am working on backporting the required package from the Ubuntu Development
release (Vivid which will become 15.04):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/utopic-backports/+bug/1388215
If you can't wait, you could try installing the relevant gir1.2-osmgpsmap-1.0
*.deb from vivid proposed:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/osm-gps-map

Cheers,
Ross

[Bug 1172837] Re: Python appindicator doesn't work in 13.04 when run as root

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1289204 ***

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe bug #1289204 is about
local/global app menus, not about app indicators at all. These two bugs
do seem to be the same kind of issue, but both mention different
symptoms.

Should/will #1289204 be edited to include app indicators as well as
local/global menus?

[Bug 1389841] Re: Remove creepy from vivid

Okay, a newer version of creepy (1.2~alpha) is now in vivid that does
not depend on osmgpsmap, so this bug can be closed.

[Bug 1395392] Re: Gramps version is outdated: 4.1.1 has been released

2014-11-22 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Valorie,
Thanks for reporting this.
Can you please confirm that the real problem is that the map function
(Geography View) is not working in Gramps?
If so, upgrading to 4.1.1 will probably not help because I suspect the problem
is that the osmgpsmap package is the wrong version in Utopic. I am working on
backporting the latest osmgpsmap, but the situation is unfortunately a litttle
complicated.
Regards,
Ross

[Bug 1389841] [NEW] Remove creepy from vivid

2014-11-05 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

Creepy (source and binary) should be removed from vivid because it has
been removed from Debian testing (which was because it has not been
updated to work with the latest osmgpsmap v1.0.2 -
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=739121). Creepy is
preventing the removal of osmgpsmap 0.7.3, and the migration of
osmgpsmap 1.0.2 to vivid-release.

Creepy has no rdepends, and I am in contact with upstream to get a new
version of Creepy into Debian (within the Debian GIS Team).

Cheers,

Ross
PS: I will aslo file bugs for gpxviewer and osmgpsmap

[Bug 1389843] [NEW] Remove gpxviewer from vivid

2014-11-05 Thread Ross Gammon
Public bug reported:

gpxviewer (source and binary) should be removed from vivid because it
has been removed from Debian testing (which was because it has not been
updated to work with the latest osmgpsmap v1.0.2 -

preventing the removal of osmgpsmap 0.7.3, and the migration of
osmgpsmap 1.0.2 to vivid-release.

Gpxviewer has no rdepends, and Andrew Gee (upstream Debian Maintainer)
was working on an update the last time I contacted him.

Cheers,

Ross
PS: Creepy also needs to be removed -
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/creepy/+bug/1389841

[Bug 1388219] Re: Please add version 0.7.3-3ubuntu1 of osm-gps-map to utopic and vivid

2014-11-01 Thread Ross Gammon
Hi Ruben,
Yes, it looks like we should do an SRU the same as you did for trusty. I will
have to backport osmgpsmap 1.0.2 for users of Gramps which has been updated to
work with this version.
But for vivid, I think we should do the same as Debian Jessie, and only have
the 1.0.2 version of osmgpsmap. This will require removing the 0.7.3 verison,
which in turn requires the removal of gpxviewer and creepy. Both packages are
aware they need to update to use the latest library.
Keeping both versions around is problematic, and I don't really want to go
through this for the 3rd release in a row!
Cheers,
Ross
