[Bug 814833] Re: Opening the dash is very slow and laggy

2013-01-14 Thread Severin Heiniger
Scratch my earlier comment #16. The reason why the performance of Unity
was so terrible is bug #856233. The CPU frequency of my HP EliteBook
6930p was erroneously locked at 800 MHz.

Opening the dash is still takes roughly 200 ms. Even though I would love
for it to be even snappier, it is acceptable for day-to-day use. If
anyone is interested, the output of unity_support_test is all green and
the OpenGL renderer is Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV620.

[Bug 856233] Re: CPU frequency less than HW supported maximum

2013-01-14 Thread Severin Heiniger
@Colin: I was experiencing exactly the same problem on fresh
installations of Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04 on my HP EliteBook 6930p.

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/bios_limit
80

$ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_driver
acpi-cpufreq
acpi-cpufreq

Your suggestion in comment #24 worked perfectly! bios_limit is now
2534000.

But the question remains why this problem occurred in the first place. I
could not spot any incorrect configuration the machine's BIOS.

Opening the dash in Ubuntu 12.10 takes about one second on my notebook
equipped with an SSD, enough RAM and online search turned off. As a
result, I try to avoid using the dash in my daily work-flow whenever
possible. I don't know where most of the this time is spent, but
llvmpipe may be a candidate.

[Bug 340506]

2011-09-12 Thread Severin Heiniger
The reason for the NullReferenceException is that in my case (Ubuntu
11.10 Beta 1), Afrodite.Utils.GetPackagePaths fails to retrieve the
package paths for glib-2.0 and gtk+-3.0, because the corresponding VAPI
files are located in /usr/share/vala-0.14/vapi rather than
/usr/share/vala/vapi.

One can work around it by creating appropriate symlinks. I'm not exactly
sure whether this is MonoDevelop's, Afrodite's or the distribution's
fault. Nonetheless, Vala autocompletion in MonoDevelop finally works!

Now the execution results in a NullReferenceException in

[Bug 784992] Re: lottanzb segfaults every few minutes on natty

2011-05-21 Thread Severin Heiniger
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 692635 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/692635

Thanks a lot for taking the time to report this bug. You are perfectly
right. I'm experiencing these frequent crashes myself and I know how
annoying they are.

I've already spent quite some time trying to figure out what is done
incorrectly in LottaNZB that causes these crashes in the low-level
libraries. The most likely reason is that it is some sort of multi-
threading issue, which is particularly hard to debug.

I'll definitively try harder to fix this bug. Any help is welcome.

[Bug 777684] Re: When LottaNZB is set to pause, download resumes in sabnzbd at next boot

2011-05-05 Thread Severin Heiniger
Thanks for taking the time to report this. It's true that when SABnzbd
is started, it is not paused automatically, even if it had been paused
in the previous session. This is in contrast to a setting like the
download speed limit, which is preserved across sessions.

LottaNZB is usually started because the user has the intention to
download something. So, if SABnzbd is started as a result of starting
LottaNZB, preserving the pausing state does not seem that intuitive and
I'd rather not like to make that the default behavior.

However, in your case, SABnzbd appears to be started silently in the
background when the computer is started (correct me if this assumption
is wrong). It seems more appropriate to preserve the pausing state here.
Since SABnzbd is started independently from LottaNZB, LottaNZB has no
control over whether SABnzbd should be paused from the beginning.

I thus see the following solutions:

- Suggest the SABnzbd developers to add a setting that will cause the pausing
state to be preserved across sessions.
- In the script that starts SABnzbd (usually /etc/default/sabnzbdplus), add the
extra command line option -pause so that SABnzbd is always paused on startup.
While you'll need to resume SABnzbd, it will at least not start downloading
automatically.

This bug seems to be related to bug #750350. My opinion however is that
rather than changing the position of the "..." in the application name,
ellipsizing is often not even necessary, just like in the Shotwell

[Bug 754126] [NEW] Focus of volume control only visible after click

2011-04-07 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-sound

Each item in the sound indicator changes it visual state when the mouse
hovers over it, except for the volume control. Similarly, when
navigating through the items using the keyboard, it's not clear when the
volume control has the focus. Only when clicking on the volume control,
an orange rectangle with rounded edges is displayed.

In order to gain more visual consistency and feedback, what I suggest is
to display this orange rectangle also when the volume control is focused
using the keyboard or when the mouse pointer is located above it.

[Bug 754119] [NEW] [dash] Unnecessary ellipsizing in application lens

2011-04-07 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

The logic that decides whether to ellipsize an application name or not
doesn't seem to be optimal.

As you can tell by the attached screenshot, in the 'Internet
Applications' lens, the names of the applications Empathy, Pidgin and
LottaNZB are ellipsized even though this is clearly not necessary. On
the other hand, the label "Chromium Web Browser" uses all of the
available space.

Are there any reasons not to move the panel to the top in GDM? The
consistency with the desktop could be increased even more by making the
panel (as well as the login pane) dark, since this is the default

position, though.

I for one absolutely agree with Jani's reasoning.

[Bug 726877] [NEW] Quicklists do not disappear upon click outside of them

2011-02-28 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

This bug seems to have been introduced only a few days ago. It's rather
annoying and can be reproduced as follows:

1. Right-click on a launcher icon so that the quicklist appears.
2. Click somewhere outside of the quicklist, e.g. on the empty desktop.
3. Observe that the quicklist doesn't disappear, even though this is the
expected behavior.

Please excuse if this bug has already be reported. I performed several

[Bug 726866] [NEW] Window inactive after dragging onto launcher and back

2011-02-28 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

This is only a minor issue and it might be necessary to assign it to
Compiz rather than Unity. It can be reproduced as follows:

1. Make sure that there is no maximized window, i.e. the launcher is
permanently visible.
2. Drag a window onto the launcher (such that the launcher disappears) and back
again, without releasing the mouse button.
3. As soon as the launcher appears again, the window (still being dragged)
appears inactive.

The expected behavior is that the window appears active the whole time.

scrolling area on the touchpad is used or the wheel of an attached
mouse. It doesn't matter whether the mouse cursor is located inside of
the Dash/Places view or not.

[Bug 725531] [NEW] Inconsistent response to clicks on workspace switcher

The workspace overview can be displayed using a single click on the
workspace switcher in the panel. In the workspace overview, a single
click on the workspace switcher doesn't have any effect. Instead, a
double-click is necessary to return to the previously active workspace.

[Bug 725529] [NEW] Double-click on panel to unmaximize only works in right half

2011-02-26 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

The ability to maximize windows by double-clicking on the title bar and
unmaximizing it again later using the same action is quite useful.
However, double-clicking on the panel in the case of a maximized window
only works in the right half (roughly) of the panel. In the other empty
panel area (i.e. next to the global menu up to half of the panel),
double-clicking doesn't have any effect.

[Bug 713843] Re: lottanzb crashed with argument must be a GObject subclass in _type_register()

2011-02-08 Thread Severin Heiniger
By the way, thanks alot for taking the time to report this bug. As the
developer of LottaNZB, I wouldn't have noticed the problem as I've been
running LottaNZB 0.6 on all of my machines for quite some time. It seems
like the decision to move away from Kiwi in LottaNZB 0.6 wasn't a bad
one.

[Bug 713843] Re: lottanzb crashed with argument must be a GObject subclass in _type_register()

2011-02-08 Thread Severin Heiniger
I can confirm this issue on Natty. The crash occurs when LottaNZB tries
to import a module of the Kiwi framework. The bug doesn't lie within
LottaNZB, but in Kiwi, as it also occurs when one tries to execute "from
kiwi.utils import gsignal" in a Python shell. As LottaNZB 0.5 heavily
depends on Kiwi, the bug must be fixed in Kiwi in order for LottaNZB 0.5
to work again.

Please note that LottaNZB 0.6 is nearly ready for release, and a PPA is
available: http://www.lottanzb.org/2010/07/lottanzb-0-6-daily-builds-
available/

[Bug 279579] Re: MRO error crash when accessing the 'focus_widget' property of a file selection dialog

2011-01-13 Thread Severin Heiniger
Closing the bug report as it cannot be reproduced anymore in Maverick.
This probably applies to some of the previous releases as well. Besides,
LottaNZB has dropped support for Intrepid long ago.

Unfortunately, the crash doesn't occur when running Rhythmbox using
Valgrind. It does when launching it with GDB, but the resulting
information has already been added to the bug report and is thus not
particularly useful. Marking the bug as 'Incomplete'.

[Bug 641674] Re: Application icon shadow rendering issue

2010-12-03 Thread Severin Heiniger
Just launched Natty Alpha 1 from a flash-drive. All rendering issues
seem to have gone and everything feels snappy, even without having a
proprietary graphics driver installed. I must say that I'm impressed by
the quality of this Alpha release, considering that in the case of
Unity, the switch to Compiz has not been made long ago. Thanks and keep
the good work up!

[Bug 654174] Re: lottanzb crashed with added nzb file

2010-11-30 Thread Severin Heiniger
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. It took so long for me to
handle the report because I wasn't informed about it and only stumbled
upon it by accident. I've also experienced the problem you describe in
the report in the past.

Fortunately, it will not occur anymore in the upcoming version 0.6 of
LottaNZB, as the corresponding parts of the application have been
rewritten.

More importantly, this version will be based on the much more advanced
and reliable backend called SABnzbd. The new version is almost ready,
and daily builds [1] for Ubuntu are available for those how are
interested in giving it a try.

[Bug 641674] [NEW] Application icon shadow rendering issue

2010-09-17 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Now that bug #599741 has been fixed, this bug report describes one of
the remaining rendering issues. The graphics card in question is an ATI
Mobility Radeon HD 3450. The free radeon driver is used.

In the screenshot attached to this bug report, you can see that the
shadows of the application icon tiles are not displayed correctly. For
demonstration purposes, I dragged the workspaces icon out of the
launcher.

[Bug 641666] [NEW] [rhythmbox, appmenu-gtk] Ghost menu item between "View" and "Control"

2010-09-17 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

It seems like a minor issue, but I thought I might still report it
because there could be an underlying issue affecting other applications
as well.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Open Rhythmbox and select the "View" menu item.
2. Press the right arrow key and notice that instead of "Control" being
selected, a small gray box (rendering issue?) appears above the "Music" menu
item.
3. Pressing the right arrow key again will select the "Control" menu item.

[Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

It's exactly as you describe it. It's now possible for me to use Unity
on my laptop with the ATI Radeon graphics card (+ radeon driver) in

minor issues that would prevent Ubuntu 10.10 from being the perfect 10.

[Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

2010-09-16 Thread Severin Heiniger
It's a pleasure for me to report that a recent Clutter update seems to
have fixed the white screen bug and cleared the stage for a working
Unity interface! Thanks to all who have contributed to fix this problem!

There are only minor rendering issues left which don't hurt usability
badly, but certainly need to be fixed in order to make a good
impression. I'm going to report my new findings in a separate bug.

[Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

2010-09-11 Thread Severin Heiniger
Unfortunately, Mesa 7.9 from ppa:sarvatt/mesa causes the screen to go
blank (white) when launching Unity.

[Bug 616508] Re: Main window insensitive upon startup

2010-09-04 Thread Severin Heiniger
In the current code, the main window is not made entirely insensitive
anymore, but only those menu and toolbar items that can only be used
when connected to SABnzbd. Besides, I haven't experienced a main window
staying insensitive for quite a while.

If you still encounter unhandled exceptions, don't hesitate to report
them.

[Bug 555045] Re: lottanzb crashed with IndexError in _load()

2010-08-28 Thread Severin Heiniger
Closing the bug report because I haven't heard back from you in a while.
The code that caused LottaNZB 0.5.3 to crash will not part of the
upcoming LottaNZB 0.6, so the issue should be fixed.

[Bug 626067] [NEW] Inappropriate capitalizing of add-on package names

2010-08-28 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center
Version: 2.1.14.1

In 'softwarecenter.view.appdetailsview_gtk.Addon', the package name is
always capitalized. However, this only makes sense for lowercase-only
package names. For a package name like "LottaNZB Automated Usenet
Client" (as seen in the 'hellanzb' package view), the resulting string
is "Lottanzb automated usenet client", which is certainly not desirable.

So what I suggest is to capitalize the package name string only if it
starts with a lower-case character.

** Affects: software-center (Ubuntu)

[Bug 625787] [NEW] utsrelease.h not found during DKMS build

2010-08-28 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

The configuration of the fglrx package fails reproducibly on Ubuntu
10.04 and 10.10 (with the latest updates applied), which results in a
system that fails to boot the graphical environment, requiring a fresh
installation because I don't know how to fix the system's state. The
graphics card in question is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450.

The output of the "apt-get install" command looks as follows. It has
been taken from [1], which is a description of the very same bug.
Unfortunately, I didn't make a copy of the output as seen on my machine.

[Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

2010-08-27 Thread Severin Heiniger
Well, there we go. fglrx shot my system to pieces once more. ;-) There
was a problem configuring it ("Error! Bad return status for module build
on kernel [...]") which prevents the system from booting the graphical
environment. I might use a live environment to get hold of make.log. Of
course, this is something unrelated to this bug.

[Bug 599741] Re: Major rendering issues using ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3450

2010-08-27 Thread Severin Heiniger
@Mirco Müller: I didn't use fglrx-driver because back then, because
installing it would make it impossible to boot the system, while the
free radeon (merged with radeonhd?!) driver did its job perfectly well
on the default Ubuntu desktop with effects enabled.

With the latest updates applied, it's still possible for me to reproduce
this bug. However, I might give fglrx another try and let you know about
the results.

[Bug 616508] Re: Main window insensitive upon startup

2010-08-21 Thread Severin Heiniger
Thanks alot for your in-depth explanation of the issue. It allowed me to
reproduce it and track it down.

The duplicate SessionNotSpecifiedError actually indicates that a
SessionNotSpecifiedError has been raised (which is perfectly fine), but
there was an unhandled exception in one of the handlers dealing with
this error (e.g. responsible for opening the 'Start Downloading'
dialog). For some reason, the SessionNotSpecifiedError was displayed a
second time instead of the actual error, making it impossible to know
what actually went wrong. This has been fixed in the latest code. As
soon as new daily builds have been released, such errors will be
displayed properly on the console, allowing us to fix the bug for good.

As for the unresponsive window occurring after having connected
successfully to SABnzbd: Even though I haven't experienced it for some
time, it will still require some investigation.

[Bug 616508] Re: Main window insensitive upon startup

2010-08-14 Thread Severin Heiniger
What I forgot to ask is whether you encounter this bug each time
LottaNZB is launched. As a work-around, you should be able to change the
configuration file ~/.config/lottanzb/lottanzb.conf by setting "active =
local" in [backend.sessions].

[Bug 616508] Re: Main window insensitive upon startup

2010-08-14 Thread Severin Heiniger
Hi jcfp,

thanks alot for reporting this bug! It's definitely something that will
need to be fixed prior to the release of LottaNZB 0.6. I've also
encountered it a few times. It might be caused by a race condition as it
doesn't happen every time LottaNZB is launched. The main window is meant
to be insensitive if and only if LottaNZB is not connected to SABnzbd
yet.

For your information, the 'SessionNotSpecifiedError' should
theoretically not be related to this bug, as it just indicates that
LottaNZB hasn't been set up yet (local or remote session). The exception
is raised in one thread (without being caught), but handled in another
thread, which should cause an appropriate dialog to be displayed. It's
odd though that the exception seems to have been raised twice. Also, one
should probably prevent this exception from being shown in the output in
the first place.

[Bug 612374] [NEW] 'translatable' property of GtkAction labels lost when saving

2010-08-01 Thread Severin Heiniger
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: glade-3

When using objects of type GtkAction in a GtkBuilder file, the attribute
'translatable' of 'label' properties is reproducibly lost when saving
the file using glade. This is extremely annoying as those attributes
need to be restored manually in a text editor after having made a change
to the file using glade. If this isn't done, the labels won't be
recognized by gettext anymore.

A file is attached for demonstration purposes. As far as I know, the
version in Maverick is also affected. If anyone can confirm this bug, it
should be forwarded upstream.
