[Bug 2073651] [NEW] Wifi does not work after wake-up, wifi driver crashes

2024-07-19 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

After waking up from sleep, wifi does not work anymore. It looks like
the machine is connected to wifi though. If I disable and re-enable the
wifi connection, the driver crashes.

The crash is shown is dmesg. I have attached a file that shows what is
going on.

I have installed the latest 6.9.9 mainline and the issue does not happen
with it. 6.8.0.35 causes issues for me.

[Bug 1335558] Re: lexmark e230 needs usb-no-reattach-default=true

2019-12-27 Thread Silviu C.
Hi,

If it's related to this bug, then it could be that it needs an entry in:

/usr/share/cups/usb/org.cups.usb-quirks

You will need to get the correct usb IDs from lsusb. Quoting from the file I
mentioned:

# To get the USB vendor and product IDs for a given printer, run the "lsusb"
# command, which will show something like the following:
#
# Bus 002 Device 003: ID ab21:34dc Acme Example Printer
#
# The "ab21:34dc" is the vendor and product ID, separated by a colon.

Append the info you get at the end of the file. Save it. Turn off your
printer. Then turn it on again.

[Bug 1314556] Re: Unable to mount Android MTP device

2015-10-30 Thread Silviu C.
What I can say is that it never worked for me on Trusty with the 3.13 kernels
and continues to not work with the mainline 4.2.5 kernel.

Which USB port I plug it in does also not matter. Tried USB 3.0 ports on the
back and two of the USB 2.0 ones. No dice. Same for the ones on the front of my
machine.

Luckily this thing can change to a mass storage device, but it's still a weird
and annoying issue.

[Bug 1497705] [NEW] [wishlist] add ability to start live session with proprietary drivers

2015-09-20 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

Hello,

I ask you to please consider adding the ability to start a live session using
proprietary video drivers. One of the most notorious trouble makers are the
nVidia GT(X) 9xx series of cards which nouveau does not support. As far as I
can tell nVidia has not provided the required firmware which nouveau uses to be
able to talk to the GPUs. People attempting to run a live session of Ubuntu on
machines using these GPUs can't easily do so.

One example of a user in difficulty is here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubuntu/comments/3lin5g/bad_first_experience/

Sure, doing a text mode install is an option but the point of the live session
is to enable people to run the OS and test it out without touching their
hardware.

There are a bunch of distributions which do this. One is Manjaro. They have an
option to boot with non-free drivers in GRUB. Once that option is selected the
GPU is detected and the correct driver is loaded.

Ideally we should not need this but some GPU vendors are more inclined to
cooperate with the FOSS community than others. User experience should not have
to suffer because of this sort of issues.

[Bug 1491929] [NEW] update-manager asks for reboot even when it should not

2015-09-03 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

update-manager asks for reboots even when updating kernels which are not
currently in use. I use a self compiled 4.1.6 kernel using the sources from
kernel.org and the patches from Canonical's mainline kernel ppa. Today I got an
update for bind and the 3.13 series kernel. After the update, I was asked
whether I wanted to reboot or not.

There was no reason to. I don't use the 3.13 kernels currently. They're there
as a backup. As for BIND. It's just a service that can be restarted on the fly.

Please consider making the update utility a bit smarter about this sort of
thing.

[Bug 1471458] [NEW] please release newer nvidia drivers for trusty

2015-07-04 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

Hello,

People who want to install Trusty onto machines with newer nvidia GPUs such as
the GTX 960/970/980 have no officially supported way to get the proper nvidia
drivers for them. There are already packages in Vivid which do support those
GPUs. Please consider packaging and releasing at least those.

[Bug 635029] Re: Downloaded .deb doesn't appear in "Installed" after installation

2015-02-22 Thread Silviu C.
Hi, this still happens on 14.04 64bit. A test case can be the crossover

The USC opens and offers to install the package. After installation it
does not show it as actually being installed even if it is. The same
thing happens with gdebi.

not true, maximum is 600x600 dpi.

This is the tech specs as presented by Lexmark:

http://www.lexmark.com/en_IN/products/laser-mono/22S0130.shtml
(click on the Specs tab)

"Print Resolution, Black

1200 Image Quality, 600 x 600 dpi"

An explanation of Image Quality vs true DPI can be found here:

[Bug 1283979] Re: moving windows causes the top bar and the launcher bar to flicker

2014-03-17 Thread Silviu C.
The workaround that I found was to disable flipping in nvidia-settings
but this shouldn't be a permanent fix because it potentially degrades
OpenGL performance:

Option "NoFlip" "boolean"

Disable OpenGL flipping; see Chapter 17 for a description. Default: OpenGL
will swap by flipping when possible.

[...]

o Flipping: When OpenGL flipping is enabled, OpenGL can perform buffer
swaps by changing which buffer the DAC scans out rather than copying the
back buffer contents to the front buffer; this is generally a much higher
performance mechanism and allows tearless swapping during the vertical
retrace (when __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK is set). The conditions under which
OpenGL can flip are slightly complicated, but in general: on GeForce or
newer hardware, OpenGL can flip when a single full screen unobscured
OpenGL application is running, and __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK is enabled.
Additionally, OpenGL can flip on Quadro hardware even when an OpenGL
window is partially obscured or not full screen or __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK is
 not enabled.

[Bug 1283979] [NEW] moving windows causes the top bar and the launcher bar to flicker

2014-02-24 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

As the title says, when I grab a window and move it around the top bar
and the launcher disappear and then re-appear. Unity does not crash.
During the move these elements flicker on and off. It looks more like a
graphical glitch.

This seems to have started after I got the packages that introduced the
anti-aliased window corners.

Public bug reported:

Hello

Some software, like CrossOver relies of 32bit version of various libs to
provide various functionality that Windows applications require.

Upon attempting to install libgsm1:i386 two things might happen:

1) the package manager will try to uninstall the 64bit version of this
lib and others

2) a message like this gets printed on screen:

[Bug 1266003] Re: unity visible with wine fullscreen applications

2014-01-04 Thread Silviu C.
** Description changed:

When running fullscreen application with wine which requires a
resolution change, the resolution change happens but the Unity stuff
still appears on screen and can be interacted with.

More than that, it appears that somehow I get a big window that is
"zoomed in" on the game. If a move the mouse to the screen edges I can
get it to "scroll" and it shows me a black background.

-
  Example:

- The GoG version of the game Nox runs in 640x480 by default. If I don't check
the "emulate desktop" for wine, the game will go fullscreen, the resolution
will change but Unity is still visible.
- Screenshot will be attached.

This is probably related to bug #734908 which has been marked as
fixed... however, googling around it seems that people still have
  issues.

the "emulate desktop" for wine, the game will go fullscreen, the resolution
will change but Unity is still visible.
Screenshot will be attached.

This is probably related to bug #734908 which has been marked as
fixed... however, googling around it seems that people still have
issues.

[Bug 907311] Re: Not exiting properly? "An instance of Brasero is already running, exiting"

2013-09-19 Thread Silviu C.
Hi,

This bug has been fixed upstream. This is the commit:

https://git.gnome.org/browse/brasero/commit/?id=f122ee0620380b7c21edce722cfe347f10c8c827

Any chance this will get in either LTS or Raring (hopefully both) ?

[Bug 1184597] Re: lexmark e230 can't print correctly on Ubuntu 12.04+

2013-06-19 Thread Silviu C.
It seems I have finally fixed my problem. I was having issues like those
described on bug #872483. What worked for me was doing:

lpadmin -p -o usb-no-reattach-default=true

where printer is what is listed by the lpstat -p command.

In my case:

printer Lexmark-E230 is idle. enabled since Wed 19 Jun 2013 03:35:49 PM EEST
Sending data to printer.

so the above command becomes:

lpadmin -p Lexmark-E230 -o usb-no-reattach-default=true

Turned the printer off, waited a bit, turned it back on and the tried
running some print jobs. It stopped printing gibberish after completing
the first print job

Here's the relevant lsusb printout:

Bus 002 Device 009: ID 043d:009a Lexmark International, Inc.

Maybe the relevant workaround for this printer can be applied in further
Ubuntu releases.

[Bug 1188941] [NEW] usb-creator causes udisks-daemon to peg the CPU and leak memory

2013-06-08 Thread Silviu C.
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1048792 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1048792

Public bug reported:

How I'm able to reproduce this:

1. Start the Startup Disk Creator
2) Plug in the USB flash drive

-nautilus complains that it cannot mount the drive. Well d'oh! Of course
it can't. Shouldn't it know why already? Anyway...

3) Choose "erase"
4) The "erasing" does not happen but a generic error pops up. (it's in the
screenshots attached)
5) close the startup disk creator
6) launch top and see udisks-daemmon peg on core and eating RAM like's its
cookies

At this point you can either kill it or leave it alone and after the
system runs out of memory the kernel will eventually kill it

2013-05-27 Thread Silviu C.
** Description changed:

The printer is identified correctly and the pxlmono driver is suggested.
Getting it to print is the big problem and it's just guesswork when it
will works and when it will not. Usually it just spits out garbage

When it does that, the first page that comes out has this on it

  "PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = PCLXL
     )   HP-PCL XL;1;1;
Comment Copyright Artifex Software"

And then it proceeds to empty the tray and every page that comes out has
a bit of garbage printed at the top. I've tried switching driver to
- ljet4 and some others but none solved my issue
+ ljet4 and some others but none solved my issue. Printer used to work in

- If I don't touch any setting once the printer is added, I can print
- stuff just fine. Except that I use A4 paper not letter but if I change
- to A4 in the printer settings then the fun begins. the printer may or
- may not print correctly and it usually happens that it does not and
- spits out garbage.
+ Getting it to print is the big problem and it's just guesswork when it
+ will works and when it will not. Usually it just spits out garbage

When it does that, the first page that comes out has this on it

  "PJL ENTER LANGUAGE = PCLXL
-)   HP-PCL XL;1;1;
Comment Copyright Artifex Software"
+    )   HP-PCL XL;1;1;
Comment Copyright Artifex Software"

And then it proceeds to empty the tray and every page that comes out has
a bit of garbage printed at the top. I've tried switching driver to
ljet4 and some others but none solved my issue

[Bug 1153545] [NEW] network-manager loses wired interfaces

2013-03-11 Thread Silviu C.
Public bug reported:

For some reason, sometimes network-manager seems to forget I've one of
the wired interfaces. The computer would start-up right, it connects to
my ISP and sometimes a po-up would show saying that I've been
disconnected. If I want to reconnect I can't because the connection does
not show up any more. If I do a "sudo service network-manager restart"
the conenction will come up again and it will show in the indicator.
I've no idea what causes this. a dmesg does not show anything wrong but
there is some info in syslog.

[Bug 1099001] Re: black screen ubuntu 12.10 ssd hard disk

2013-02-19 Thread Silviu C.
Joseph,

If we try out one of the mainline kernels, will there be a kernel module
built for the proprietary nvidia driver too ?

This article, seems to suggest that it may not be a kernel issue, but
something with lightdm:

[Bug 1027211] Re: [nvidia] Moving or resizing windows freezes and stutters on nvidia (especially if some other window is redrawing).

2012-12-05 Thread Silviu C.
Is there any way you could talk to the guys in charge of the nvidia
driver for linux? Some time ago they were asking on the lkml if there
was anything they could help, I mean work on other projects if possible
and whatnot. Maybe that was a sincere offer :)

[Bug 1049214] Re: [nvidia] XSync usage is a massive bottlenecking factor (nvidia performance regression in Compiz 0.9.8+)

2012-12-01 Thread Silviu C.
With the 310.14 nvidia drivers, unchecking "sync to vblank" in the
nvidia-settings utility seems to make the problem of windows stuttering
during dragging go away. It seems this option defaults to "on" in the
310 series. Looks like compiz doing v-sync and the driver doing v-sync
is a bad combination.

Can anyone else with nvidia cards and the 310 series driver confirm
this?

[Bug 1068811] [NEW] installing this package conflicts with nvidia-settings-updates

2012-10-19 Thread Silviu C.

If the nvidia post release updates driver is installed, trying to
activate the 310 experimental nvidia blob will fail. However, the driver
*does* get installed and can be used. The nvidia-settings-

[Bug 1037453] Re: compiz 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.4, performance regression

2012-10-17 Thread Silviu C.
Hi Daniel,

Yes, I too believe that what's described in bug #1049214 seems to fit
what's happening on screen. Please mark this as a dupe of that bug
report.

On a side-note there was something that caught my eye in the latest
nvidia driver beta:

Version 310.14
Release DateMon Oct 15, 2012

* Improved performance and responsiveness of windowed OpenGL
applications running inside a Unity session.

While this may not cure the issues in this bug report it might restore
performance lost when gaming. It will certainly make it worth checking

[Bug 1037453] Re: compiz 1:0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.4, performance regression

2012-08-23 Thread Silviu C.
Hello,

Managed to get back nouveau. Had some apt issues because I installed the
previous version of the compiz packs. I can't tell you how well windows
moving was with version 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.2 but with the latest version
it dragging windows seems smooth. I do get a bit of tearing when moving
windows around. It shows mostly on vertical moves.

With the nvidia driver, this new version of compiz manages to shave off
about 10 fps (compared to the old version) in games I run with Crossover
(wine).

silviu@silviu-pangolin:~$ dpkg -s compiz
Package: compiz

2012-08-22 Thread Silviu C.
Hello,

Installing the debs like that worked but apt is complaining now about
having a broken dbase. Windows move smoothly again.

Running sudo apt-get install -f is not an option. Looks like it wants to
install the newer compiz version.

2012-08-17 Thread Silviu C.
Hello,

I've tried the workarounds but they did not fix the issue. I want to
revert back to the version of compiz that you suggested but I'm not
exactly sure how that is done. Download the debs on that page, then
purge compiz and install them ?
