[Bug 792261] [NEW] Pitivi 0.14.0 does not start on Lucid

2011-06-03 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pitivi

I installed pitivi 0.14.0 from the gstreamer ppa. The install completes
correctly. However, when I start the program, it displays a dialog box
saying:

You do not have a recent enough version of the GTK+ Python bindings
(currently 2.17.0)

Install a version of the GTK+ Python bindings greater or equal to 2.18.0

Indeed, I have python-gtk2 version 2.17.0.

1. There is no python-gtk2 2.18.anything for Lucid

2. The dependency in the pitivi package says Depends: python-gtk2
(>=2.17)

There is definitely a packaging bug: pitivi 0.14.0 depends on python-
gtk2 >=2.18.

It does not seem possible to run pitivi with Lucid unless you install a
new version of python-gtk from somewhere, or pitivi is changed to work
with python-gtk2 0.2.17.

** Affects: pitivi (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 659112] Re: Fluidsynth-dssi plugin generates loud white-noise

2010-10-12 Thread Stephen Irons
I un-installed fluidsynth-dssi 1.0.0-2 and installed fluidsynth-dssi
0.9.1-3ubuntu4 from lucid (I just copied the deb file across from
another computer; dependencies were still satisfied). Both Rosegarden
and jack-dssi-host still give the same raucous white-noise sound.

Note that Rosegarden worked well with fluidsynth-dssi under Lucid.

[Bug 659112] Re: Fluidsynth-dssi plugin generates loud white-noise

2010-10-12 Thread Stephen Irons
To summarize:

1. start jackd at 48kHz
2. run jack-dssi-host fluidsynth-dssi.so
3. load a sound-font. I used /usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2, but had the
same problem with all other sound fonts that I tried.
4. press 'Send Test Note'

I hear loud white noise, with the proper note just audible.

Ah-ha, running  jack-dssi-host fluidsynth-dssi.so creates the same
white-noise sound, so it is not Rosegarden, it is something wrong with
fluidsynth-dssi (but not fluidsynth standalone)

Further notes:

1. Audio tracks play as expected.

2. Old projects (from Lucid) have the same problem with fluidsynth-dssi
tracks

3. Tracks using xsynth-dssi works correctly.

Perhaps it is fluidsynth-dssi that is failing...

[Bug 659112] [NEW] Fluidsynth-dssi plugin generates loud white-noise

2010-10-12 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rosegarden

When I play a project that had a track using the fluidsynth-dssi plugin,
that track generates full-volume white noise rather than the intended
instrument sound. It is just possible to hear the real sound through the
noise.

To re-create this problem:
1. start jack at 48kHz using qjackctl
2. start rosegarden
3. create a new project
4. add a few notes to a midi track
5. set the playback parameters to
Synth plugin
Fluidsynth DSSI
6. load a sound-font -- I use Fluid Synth GM in
/usr/share/sounds/sf2/FluidR3_GM.sf2
7. select any instrument
8. play

I hear full volume white noise.

I expect to hear the notes I just entered.

I am using Ubuntu Maverick fully up to date today.
rosegarden 1:10.02-0ubuntu5
fluidsynth-dssi 1.0.0-2

Rosegarden can play using fluidsynth as an external MIDI synthesizer
using the same soundfont.

[Bug 592030] Re: Sony DVD+-RW D-Q58A drive does not recognise DVD-R disks

Installed a new linux kernel

$ uname -a
Linux leonora 2.6.34-020634-generic #020634 SMP Mon May 17 20:34:55 UTC 2010
i686 GNU/Linux

I assume this one is suitable? Anyway, it gives a similar result

With no DVD-R in drive:
$ sudo /lib/udev/cdrom_id /dev/sr0
ID_CDROM=1
ID_CDROM_CD_R=1
ID_CDROM_CD_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_R=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_R=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_R_DL=1

With finalised DVD-R in drive:
$ sudo /lib/udev/cdrom_id /dev/sr0
ID_CDROM=1
ID_CDROM_CD_R=1
ID_CDROM_CD_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_R=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_R=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_RW=1
ID_CDROM_DVD_PLUS_R_DL=1
ID_CDROM_MEDIA=1
ID_CDROM_MEDIA_DVD_R=1

But nothing pops up on the desktop.

There are now no errors logged in dmesg.

$ sudo udevadm monitor prints nothing when a DVD-R is inserted, whereas
with a DVD-RW, it displays 2 kernel change and 2 udev change events.

[Bug 592030] [NEW] Sony DVD+-RW D-Q58A drive does not recognise DVD-R disks

2010-06-09 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

This bug is identical to lp:561585 except it applies to a different DVD-
RW drive, and the problem still occurs with udev 151-10.

This is an old Dell laptop running Lucid all up-to-date to today.

1. The drive recognises CDs correctly
2. It does not recognise DVD-R from my camcorder. A different computer with a
different drive does recognise the disk.
3. I have not tested is with other types of DVD.

The symptom is that the disk never appears on the desktop, or in the Places
menu. The DVD drive sits there making noises periodically, as though it is
continually trying to read the disk.

[Bug 578541] Re: Timeline zoom slider is hard to control

2010-05-10 Thread Stephen Irons
They certainly do work, now that I know about them.

I missed the menu items View > Zoom In and View > Zoom Out in the
obvious place in the menu because, as a newbie, I had just discovered
the zoom slider and had not really thought to look for the menu items.

Perhaps I would change the bug title to "The timeline zoom slider is
hard to control with the mouse", and make the request for two things
specifically:

* A (+) and (-) button at the appropriate ends of the slider, to make
controlling zoom with the mouse easier.
* A way to go one or a few default zoom level, such as
* fully zoomed in (slide the slider to the left, or select a menu item, or
use a keyboard shortcut)
* fully zoomed out (slide the slider to the right, or select a menu item,
or use a keyboard shortcut)
* default zoom level, with numbered ticks = 1s zoom level or so

To implement a default zoom level, a 'detent' on the zoom slider might be nice,
much the same as the full volume level on the volume control under Lucid.

[Bug 578541] [NEW] Timeline zoom slider is hard to control

2010-05-10 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pitivi

In Pitivi 0.13.4, it is difficult to control the timeline zoom slider
with accuracy because the only control is the slider itself. This
becomes very obvious when the movie is longer; I make movies of 60
minutes or more.

It would be very nice if there were some of the following, either in
menu items or near the timeline zoom slider:

* A zoom-in-a-step and zoom-out-a-step (eg. (+) and (-) buttons at the
appropriate ends of the timeline zoom slider. This would also help
newbies to work out which way to move the slider...I usually get it
wrong the first time. I don't know what each zoom-step should be...

* A way to zoom out to a default zoom level. I don't know what the
default zoom level should be, but I find that I often work with a zoom
level where the numbered ticks are exactly 1 second apart. This gives a
relatively accurate manual positioning of the playhead.

[Bug 578530] [NEW] Pitivi audio waveform is inaccurate and changes

2010-05-10 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pitivi

Hooray, I can now import a long (60+ minutes) audio and video file into
pitivi 0.13.4 because the timeout is gone (or something). However, when
I import a 60 minute WAV file, the following problems occur with the
waveform display of the audio track:

* Towards the end of the track, the waveform display is about 15 seconds
ahead of the actual sound output. In other words, the display shows the
applause at the end of the concert occuring while the musician is still
playing.

* As you move the playhead position along the timeline using the arrow
keys, the audio display changes underneath the playhead position.

These two defects make it difficult to align the audio with the video.

I need to do this because I record concerts with a high-quality audio
recording device and a consumer video camera, leaving both of the
running for the full duration of the performance (or at least until
interval). I have a second video camera taking close ups of the
performers, audience, etc. Afterwards I combine the high-quality audio
with the video, and cut-in close-ups where appropriate.

boot from a tiny USB flash drive. In order to install, I booted off the
netbook live USB image on one USB flash drive and installed onto the
tiny USB flash drive.

During installation, the destination USB flash drive was given /dev/sdc.
I told the partitioner to partition /dev/sdc, and to mount /dev/sdc1 as
/, and there is an appropriate entry in /etc/fstab.

The system boots up correctly. The boot drive is automatically given
/dev/sda and seems to be mounted automatically.

The USB SD card reader is given /dev/sdb.

When plugging in another USB flash drive, it is given /dev/sdc. However,
it cannot be mounted because of the entry in /etc/fstab trying to make
it mount as /.

When I removed the entry for /dev/sdc1 in /etc/fstab, the system works
as expected.

How do I mark a bug as 'No error'?

[Bug 574198] [NEW] USB flash drive and hard drive are not mounted

2010-05-02 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

I have an Acer netbook with a fresh install of Lucid. It does not mount
USB flash drives properly:

1. if I plug in a USB drive (flash or HD), it does not appear in Nautilus
2. if I plug in a second USB drive (either type), the second one appears as
expected.

Provided that I do not remove the first device, I can then remove the
second one then replace it, or plug in a different device. It seems as
though the first USB drive plugged in triggers some activity that allows
the second one to be recognised.

Both devices are recognised correctly, as shown by lsusb. I use two

Both devices have entries in /dev: they are given /dev/sdc, /dev/sdc1,
/dev/sdd and /dev/sdd1 as expected.

I can mount the first device using mount (sudo mkdir /mnt/test; sudo
mount /dev/sdc1 /mnt/test).

There are no errors reported, so this is not a duplicate of lp:515023

Although these are not I have tried both with and without the
modification to /lib/udev/rules.d/85-hdparm.rules suggested in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/548513/comments/20

[Bug 387573] Re: Drop-down calendar does not close unless you click on it

2009-07-02 Thread Stephen Irons
My wife is a musician; she uses a computer because she has too, for
email, writing program notes, etc. She does not just click around and
experiment on the computer, because she is afraid she might break
things, even though I have repeated explained that she cannot do any
permanent damage.

She complained at me the other day because "I can't make the calendar
thing go away".

It think that she had accidentally clicked on the date-time, rather than
the power-off button next to it. To her, the calendar just appeared.

She did not know that clicking on the time again would make it go away
-- everything else in the panel disappears automatically. Everything
else that sticks around has a close button.

If the sticky behaviour remains, it should at least have a close button.

[Bug 273336] Re: [intrepid] alpha 6 - WPA & WPA2 Personal won't authenticate short passwords

2009-03-17 Thread Stephen Irons
I have the same problem as described by the original poster.

In nm-connection editor, create a new network

Connection name: Wireless connection 1

Wireless tab:
SSID: Q9PDANE813
Mode: Infrastructure

Wireless security tab:
Security: WPA & WPA2 Personal
Password: A12B34C56D78E90F12

OK.

Close connection editor. Open it again.

Password has changed to a long string starting: 5e470696...

Open Seahorse, Passwords tab.

Network secret for Wireless connection 1/802-11-wireless-security/psk
Properties, show password.

It has the same long string starting: 5e470696...

Interesting that this is the same string obtained by

$ wpa_passphrase Q9PDANE813 A12B34C56D78E90F12
network={
ssid="Q9PDANE813"
#psk="A12B34C56D78E90F12"
psk=5e470696...snip
}

So, nm-connection editor is storing the wrong thing in the keyring.

[Bug 325593] Re: ffmpeg using libavcodec-unstripped does not encode or decode AMR

2009-02-08 Thread Stephen Irons
Under Hardy, Medibuntu provided *-unstripped, which included support for
AMR.

Under Intrepid, Medibuntu does not provide ffmpeg or lib*-unstripped
anymore. Instead, these packages are available in the multiverse
repository, which I installed as suggested in

https://bugs.launchpad.net/medibuntu/+bug/291011/comments/1.

This comment goes on to say:

"They should include all necessary codecs (except amr, because I haven't
had the time to add it, please open a specific bug report if you are
interested by it)..."

I am interested by it, as are some others, judging from the forums.

This is the specific bug report requested. If this is the wrong package,
please could someone who knows better change it to the right one.

Thank you.

[Bug 194230] Re: Unable to change volumes using sliders

2008-12-16 Thread Stephen Irons
Yes, the speaker and microphone volume control sliders in the Audacity
toolbar do not work in Intrepid -- and did not work in Hardy either. I
always wondered what they were for...

http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Linux_Issues says that you
have to build Audacity with ./configure --with-portaudio=v19 --without-
portmixer, and the file audacity-1.3.5/debian/rules includes those
options. The menu Help > About Audacity > Build information indicats
that PortMixer support is disabled.

I assume this is why the sliders do not work.

1. booted up and logged on
2. inserted a blank CD-R

4. closed Brasero
5. opened Rhythmbox

[Bug 299121] Re: Nautilus expands a subdirectory when shift-clicking on a file

2008-11-17 Thread Stephen Irons
Oh, Ubuntu Intrepid recently updated, Nautilus 2.24.1

A bit more clicking around revealed that it depends on the TIME between
pressing shift and clicking.

Sometimes, when you press the shift key, the little triangular expander
on the first subdirectory turns black for a short while, between a tiny
fraction of a second up to about half a second.

If you click soon after pressing shift, while the expander triangle is
still black, then the subdirectory expands. If you hold the shift key
down for long enough, it turns white again, and the shift-click operates
correctly.

[Bug 299121] [NEW] Nautilus expands a subdirectory when shift-clicking on a file

2008-11-17 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When trying to select a range of files in a directory with a few files
and at least one subdirectory as follows:

1. click on the first file
2. shift click on a second file

I expect the range of files from the first to the second to be selected.
Instead, SOMETIMES, the first subdirectory is expanded and/or collapsed.

It does not seem to depend on the number of files in the range, or the
type of the file.

This might be related to lp:295408, which also involves shift-clicking,
but the action is different.

[Bug 298939] Re: Brasero calculates audio duration incorrectly

2008-11-17 Thread Stephen Irons
Perhaps I was just too impatient previously...

Totem-xine can play this file, and ffmpeg can process it too. Rhythmbox
cannot play this file. The Desktop preview feature plays the file
correctly.

It seems as though the gstreamer plugin that detects the length of the
audio in a .WAV file breaks when using this file.

[Bug 298939] [NEW] Brasero calculates audio duration incorrectly

2008-11-16 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

1. Drag a 79.4MB audio file into Brasero (about 7:52 minutes according to
Totem).
--> It complains that the file is shorter than 6 seconds and will be padded at
its end
--> It displays the length of the track as 0:06 min
--> It updates the time used in the bar to 00:12 min

2. Drag a second 66.7MB file (about 6:36 according to Totem)
--> Another complaint about the file being too short
--> Displays the track length as 0:06
--> Updates time used to 18:00

The expected behaviour is obvious.

Intrepid, Brasero 0.8.2

ffmpeg reports these files as:

Input #0, wav, from 'mozart-rehearsal-3-1.wav':

[Bug 181703] Re: Brasero does not recognize audio CD or blank CD-R

2008-11-16 Thread Stephen Irons
Same problem with Intrepid 32 bit: cannot burn a blank CD-R as Brasero
reports its size as 0 min.

A few days ago, however, I did manage to burn a blank CD-R. There were
two differences:

1. I was at work and had an Ethernet network connected, so network
manager reported the network as being on-line. At home I use dialup.
Does Brasero use the network?

2. I had only logged on as myself, with a DVD in the drive. When I have
not been able to burn, I was the second or third (or more) user to log
on (we share a computer) at home). Perhaps the first person to log on
grabs access to the DVD-RW drive and prevents subsequent users from
accessing it?

[Bug 107208] Re: Two USB serial adapters get different /dev/ttyUSBn names after reboot

2008-11-11 Thread Stephen Irons
Original poster: The only real solution is to find a USB serial adapter
that includes a serial number: I bought some from Dontronics in
Australia.

There is no real way to tell from the sales brochures, though. I was
just lucky. Spending more money is no guarantee, but it makes it more
likely that you will get one with a serial number.

Failing that, it MIGHT be possible to use sysfs path, which will start
something like:
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1d.3/usb4/4-1/4-1:1.0

This then distinguishes otherwise identical devices by WHERE they are
plugged in. This can lead to interesting problems if you unplug (eg)
your telescope USB adaptor and plug your oscilloscope USB adaptor back
into that hole. So this is not really a solution.

I do not know how stable the sysfs path is between reboots. Does the
kernel always find USB interface controllers, hubs and ports in the same
order?

Another alternative is to use only one device from each of many
different manufacturers. The problem here is that they usually use the
same internals, so while they look different and come in different
packaging, they are all identical internally.

The kernel provides the mechanism to assign fixed /dev/ttyUSBx numbers,
provided that there is some way to distinguish between identical
devices.

There is no UI to configure the udev rules and give meaningful names to
particular ones. That might be nice, but is not relevant to udev.

[Bug 287689] Re: gthumb --import-photos doesn't work in intrepid without intervention

2008-10-27 Thread Stephen Irons
I have this behaviour too. In Hardy, Nautilus did not mount the PTP
device so gThumb could read the camera correctly. In Intrepid, Nautilus
does mount the PTP device, so both gThumb and f-spot cannot access the
camera.

This is also documented in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/208467

My work-around is:

1. in File Management Preferences (Nautilus > Edit > Preferences > Media
> Photos), select gThumb photo manager

2. in Removable Drives and Media Preferences (System > Preferences >
Removable Drives and Media > Cameras > Digital Camera), uncheck the
Import digital photographs when connected.

Then, when you plug in a camera, gThumb pops up. On the Desktop, you can
unmount the camera device. Then in gThumb, select File > Import photos,
and it works properly.

I have no idea who is reponsible for mounting the PTP camera (udev?
hal?, nautilus?), but there is no obvious way to change it.

[Bug 178895] Re: Audacity does not mesh with PulseAudio

2008-07-23 Thread Stephen Irons
Using pasuspender works for me -- if a PulseAudio application is already
playing (eg Totem or Rhythmbox), then it stops while Audacity is running
and automatically starts again when Audacity ends. Great.

However, it does not solve the problem of bug 202791 or 231651, in which
Audacity cannot open the sound device. I think the problem there is
related to JACK.

Audacity supports lots of different sound drivers: OSS, ALSA and in the new
version, also JACK. When Audacity starts up, it automatically starts jackd, the
JACK daemon with a bunch of standard settings: 48000 samples per second using
the default ALSA sound device.

So JACK has grabbed the sound device, meaning that neither ALSA nor OSS
can use it, and you get 'cannot open device' error.

The further problem is that JACK can ONLY work at its configured sample
rate, so if your Audacity project is anything other than 48000, it will
not play, but gives the 'cannot open device' error.

So you have a few options:

1. Change the Audacity project sample rate to the JACK sample rate (default
48000)
2. Change the JACK sample rate to match your Audacity project rate
3. Disable JACK and use ALSA or OSS for audio input and output.

1. is easy to do. However, you have to have JACK configured correctly,
especially if you have an older PC, otherwise you will get clicks and
noises, caused by JACK 'xruns'.

To change the JACK configuration, you need to have a file /etc/jackdrc
(a system wide setting that overrides the jackd built in settings) or
~/.jackdrc (a per-user setting that overrides the built-in defaults and
/etc/jackdrc).

To change the JACK sample rate, create a file called /etc/jackdrc or
~/.jackdrc containing the one line:

/usr/bin/jackd -R -T -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 48000 -p 128 -n 3

The number following the -r sets the sample rate. man jackd will get
more details about the other options.

There are two ways to disable jackd: you can either prevent jackd from
starting at all, or you can make jackd use a dummy sound card.

To prevent jackd from starting, ensure that /etc/jackdrc or ~/.jackdrc contains
an illegal command: my jackdrc contains the line:
#/usr/bin/jackd -R -T -d alsa -d hw:0 -r 48000 -p 128 -n 3

Then, in Audacity you will have access to all your ALSA and OSS sound
devices, and there will be no JACK device.

To make jackd use a dummy sound card, /etc/jackdrc or ~/.jackdrc should contain
the line:
/usr/bin/jackd -T -d dummy -C 2 -P 2 -r 48000 -p 128

This makes JACK pretend to have a sound card with two inputs (-C 2) and
two outputs (-P 2) running at 48000 samples per second.

Then in Audacity you will have access to all your ALSA and OSS sound
devices, and there will be a JACK device. It will be set to 48000
samples per second and, if your Audacity project sample rate matches
this, then you can play and record from this device. Of course, you will
not actually hear anything...

[Bug 244148] [NEW] brasero displays incorrect track duration

2008-06-30 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

While creating an audio CD, Brasero displayed the wrong track duration
and burned a bad disk. First, I added some .WAV files to the brasero
audio cd project. I then realised that they needed tweaking, so I re-
generated the .WAV files from my audio editor. I then removed the files
from the brasero project and dragged the new ones (with the same names)
into the project.

Brasero kept the duration of the original files. It burned to disk the
contents of the second version of the files, but truncated them (if the
first version was shorter than the second) or padded them with silence
(if the first version was longer than the second).

To reproducd the problem:

1. In Brasero, create a new audio CD project
2. Create two WAV files; I used Audacity export multiple
 * track1.wav, 5MB, 00:30
 * track2.wav, 20MB, 02:00
3. Drag them into Brasero. Brasero reports their duration correctly.
4. Oh dear, they were wrong, I need to change them
5. Overwrite test1.wav and test2.wav with different contents and change the
length; once again, I used Audacity
  * track1.wav, 10MB, 01:00
  * track2.wav, 15MB, 01:30
6. Delete the files from Brasero
7. Drag the new test1.wav and test2.wav into Brasero
8. Brasero reports their duration as 00:30 and 02:00, not 01:00 and 01:30 as
expected
9. Burn a disk and play it on a CD player. Both tracks are incorrect
  * Track 1 is 00:30 long, and consists of the music in the second version
of track1.wav, truncated at 30s
  * Track 2 is 02:00 long, and consists of the music in the second version
of track2.wav, padded with silence to 02:00

This behaviour is clearly wrong: it should either use the first versions
of track1.wav and track2.wav, or the second version. It should not use
the duration of the first version but the contents of the second
version.

In order to get the correct duration for track1.wav and track2.wav, you
have to close Brasero. I have not tried creating a new project, but that
might work too.

Note: Brasero notices if you rename a file, presumably using inotify;
however, it does not seem to notice if you write new contents to the
file or if the length of the file (duration of the music) changes.

[Bug 217151] Re: Epiphany prints blank pages

2008-06-26 Thread Stephen Irons
The workaround (changing scale to 100%) works for me -- almost
permanently.

If I select 'File > Print Preview', the preview looks good. However,
selecting 'File > Print' after that, the scale has changed back to 1%.

Changing 'File > Page Setup' does not affect the scale.

It seems as though 'File > Print Preview' changes the scale from 100% to
1%.

The value is stored in .gnome2/epiphany/print-settings.ini

[Print Settings]
scale=100

gets changed to
scale=1

Perhaps print preview writes a value in the range 0..1 where it should
be writing the value 0..100%?

[Bug 207941] Re: Kino does not import AVI file from Canon cameras properly

2008-04-20 Thread Stephen Irons
1. the mencoder solution does indeed work. I guess the solution I would
like for this bug report is to have mencoder as a 'suggested' or
'recommended' package. I have no idea how package maintainers go about
deciding which packages are suggested or recommended, so I will leave it
up to the package maintainer.

2. I am not in a position to compile and test the latest version of
ffmpeg, and they do not want bug reports on old versions, so
unfortunately I cannot submit a bug report to ffmpeg.

3. perhaps I will send Kino my ffmpeg equivalent of the mencoder script
that does the conversion.

The mencoder solution works, but I was hoping to keep at least one of
the numerous audio-video conversion suites off my PC.

Other applications manage to play the Canon AVI files (totem-xine,
totem-gstreamer, mplayer). Of the application I have tried, I have found
that only ffmpeg fails. It seems to me that the problem is with ffmpeg,
not Canon. I have not verified what the AVI standard says, but I assume
that ffmpeg is getting something wrong, and everyone else is more-or-
less correct.

Thanks for the comments.

[Bug 207941] [NEW] Kino does not import AVI file from Canon cameras properly

2008-03-27 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kino

Kino 1.1.0 Ubuntu Gutsy

When importing a .AVI file from Canon still cameras (both A720IS and an
IXUS), the import appears to complete, but the imported DV file is very
short (about 2s instead of 30s). It appears that most of the frames have
been dropped.

Kino runs ffmpeg to convert from .AVI to DV format.

Running Kino from a terminal, ffmpeg reports the following over and
over:

[dvvideo @ 0xb7e81a68]Can't process DV frame #2. Insufficient audio data
or severe sync problem.

This is a known problem with .AVI videos from Canon still cameras,
perhaps something to do with its non-standard audio sample rate of 11024
(rather than 11025) samples per second.

Three possible solutions or workarounds:

One:
If mencoder is installed, then Kino uses mencoder to do the conversion.
However, the Ubuntu kino package does not mencoder, not even a 'suggests'.
Perhaps the Ubuntu package could recommend mencoder, the same as it does ffmpeg.

Two:
Fix ffmpeg so that it imports Canon .AVI properly. I can send a sample if
needed. This would need work from the ffmpeg people.

Three:
Do the conversion in 2 stages: this would need work from the Kino people:

1. convert audio to pcm_s16le, 48kHz using ffmpeg
2. combine this audio file with the DV video using ffmpeg a second time

machine:

1. The phone appears as a serial port using driver
...\system32\DRIVERS\hmvmdm.sys. This file is supplied with the PC
Assist software.

2. Typing 'AT' into a terminal emulator gets the response 'OK'. But
'ATDT', 'ATH0' and 'ATH1' get an error message. There seems to be some
protocol running over the serial connection.

3. To manage files on the the phone, you have to use the supplied PC

explorer can see.

4. The supplied software also lets you:
   * view SMSs, calls and emails on the phone
   * synchronise addressbook and calendar with Outlook

5. Apparently, you can also connect to the internet via the phone, but I
have not tried that; traffic charge is huge.

[Bug 153388] Re: Gusty bluetooth OBEX Push (File receive)

2008-02-27 Thread Stephen Irons
I had to install package gnome-bluetooth. This gives you three things:

* Send To > Bluetooth option in Nautilus
* gnome-obex-send, a little UI to send a file to a Bluetooth device. I think
the Send To > Bluetooth option uses this behind the scenes
* Applications > Accessories > Bluetooth File Sharing menu option, which runs
* gnome-obex-server

gnome-obex-server is what you want: it enables the OBEX file receive
service.

It is a bad name: file sharing suggests to me that I am sharing my files
via bluetooth.

It also is in a bad place: it should be one of the services in the
gnome-bluetooth-applet that sits in the taskbar, not a separate
application that makes a new icon on the taskbar.

I believe there are moves afoot to move both the Nautilus > Send To >
Bluetooth and Applications > Accessories > Bluetooth File Sharing from
the package gnome-bluetooth to package bluez-gnome where it belong (or
at least to integrate the functionality there).

[Bug 159171] Rhythmbox does not play mms stream unless started with a terminal

2007-10-31 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

If I start Rhythmbox from the Application menu or from a launcher as an
application (without terminal), then it does not play an MMS stream at
http://202.7.7.90/rnz-cfm (or one or two others that I tried). It pops
up a dialog box saying "Couldn't start playback. Unknown playback error"

It does play the other internet radio stations supplied as standard with
Ubuntu.

If I start Rhythmbox from a terminal window, or from a panel launcher as
an 'Application in Terminal', then it does play the stream correctly. It
also prints the following in the terminal window "JACK tmpdir identified
as [/dev/shm]".

How can a capture the debug output from Rhythmbox without having a
terminal?

Gutsy, updated 2007-11-01
libmms0 0.3-5ubuntu2
gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad 0.10.5-4ubuntu1

Perhaps just a problem with the bad plugin?

I have /home on a clean ext3 partition with the same problem (changed

I can delete /home so it does not seem to be locked at that level.

I can create a new partition, but cannot mount /dev/sda4 there either: it gives

[Bug 83715] Re: local loopback interface isn't brought up on boot

2007-05-16 Thread Stephen Irons
This happens on Fiesty release too. At home, I have no wired network connected;
I use GnomePPP to dial in to the ISP.
Updated to repositories on 2007-05-14. Kernel 2.6.20-15-generic.

Immediately after startup::

$ ping localhost
connect: Network is unreachable

$ ifconfig
eth1  Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:15:C5:00:01:5A
  UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1

  collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
  RX bytes:0 (0.0 b)  TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
  Interrupt:18

There is no 'lo' interface.

This causes all sorts of problems (startup delays, slow application
launch, slow response to power button and panel Quit applet, Evince and
EOG not printing, etc...)

$ sudo ifup lo
ifup: interface lo already configured

This is strange, ifconfig did not see 'lo'

$ sudo ifdown lo
$ sudo ifup lo
$ ping localhost
PING localhost (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from localhost (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.033 ms

After this, power button works properly, Evince and EOG print properly,
etc.

/etc/hosts, /etc/network/interfaces seem to be correct:

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
#::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

$ cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

#iface eth0 inet static
#address 172.25.143.31
#netmask 255.255.0.0
#gateway 172.25.161.1

#auto eth0

#iface eth1 inet dhcp

#auto eth1

So everything seems to be set up properly, but it appears that nothing calls
/etc/init.d/loopback

Any ideas?

[Bug 107208] Re: Two USB serial adapters get different /dev/ttyUSBn names after reboot

2007-04-25 Thread Stephen Irons
Thanks for the reply.I have read various HowTos and will try them out
shortly.

However, this is only a partial solution. It depends on having USB-
serial adapters from different manufacturers. At work, I have FOUR USB-
serial adapters, all made by Bafo, connected to the following devices:

* a development project, talking to Uboot or a Linux console
* a development project, talking some variant of gdb to a low-level debug server
* a Tektronix oscilloscope, for getting screenshots
* a GPS receiver

Looking at the manufacturer alone does not work here: I would have to
look at a serial number. However, the output of udevinfo -a -p
/class/tty/ttyUSB0 does not give a serial number. There is no evidence
of a serial number from lsusb -v, or in syslog.

Questions:
1. Does the PL2303 device include a serial number? The PL2303 chip supports an
EEPROM, but who knows whether BAFO included one in their product.
2. Who is responsible for reading the USB serial number: the USB subsystem in
general, the USB class driver, or the PL2303 driver?
3. udevinfo -a -p /class/tty/ttyUSB0 does not give a serial number

I can accept that this is not a bug in the kernel. If the USB serial-
class specification does not MANDATE a serial number, then there is a
bug in the specification, and there is no general solution. If the USB
serial-class driver does not read the serial number, then there is a
problem at that level. If the PL2303 driver does not read the serial
number, then there is a problem with the PL2303 driver. If the Bafo
serial adapter does not include a serial number, then I will buy a
serial adapter that does (does anybody know of one?)

However, there is still a bug in Ubuntu at a user-interface level. A
normal user does not want to go writing udev rules to ensure that the
modem is always named /dev/modem, the weather-station is /dev/weather-
station, and the GPS unit is /dev/gps. I would like to see a GUI of some
sort that displays a list of all 'connectable' ports (serial ports, USB
serial ports, parallel ports, etc) along with sufficient data to
identify them uniquely (including serial number), and allow the user to
specify an application-level device such as /dev/modem, and create the
appropriate udev rule. Or perhaps he will paint each USB serial adapter
a different colour, then create devices such as /dev/ttyUSB-blue and
/dev/ttyUSB-red, using the serial number provided by the GUI. He can
then create further links like this

/dev/gps -> /dev/ttyUSB-blue -> /dev/ttyUSB0, where the first
/dev/wx -> /dev/ttyUSB-red -> /dev/ttyUSB1

This should probably be a new specification not a bug report.

Here is partial output of lsusb -v, showing that there is no serial number.
Perhaps this should be a separate bug report.

[Bug 107216] Internet connection via dialup modem connected to PL2303 USB serial port fails after dialling

2007-04-17 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

I have a multi-function USB device with a serial port, a parallel port
and two USB ports. A dialup modem is connected to the serial port, which
is given the name /dev/ttyUSB0.

I have configured GnomePPP to dial using /dev/ttyUSB0. GnomePPP dials
correctly, and passes some data. However, after a few seconds, it stops
receiving data from the modem. If I try to browse to a web site, I can
see data being sent (the Tx bytes increases), but no data is received
(Rx bytes stops at about 1K).

If I connect a different serial device to the serial port, then it works
correctly for as long as I have needed: up to 30 minutes. The problem
seems to be when handing over from wvdial to pppd.

The serial port seems to be a FTDI device -- see output from lsusb

[Bug 107208] Two USB serial adapters get different /dev/ttyUSBn names after reboot

2007-04-17 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

I have a laptop with four USB ports. Into one of these ports is plugged
a no-name USB widget with 2 more USB ports, a serial port and a parallel
port; I guess there is a USB hub in there also. Into one of these new
USB ports, I plug a BAFO USB-serial adapter, so there are two USB serial
ports.

When I start the computer, these two serial ports are assigned to
/dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 randomly.

I have a modem connected to one of the adapters. Every time I restart,
it is a hit-and-miss whether I can connect to the internet without
changing a configuration file to point to the other /dev/ttyUSB port.

Windows manages to assign the same com port number to the same USB
serial device. How do I make Ubuntu do the same?

Edgy 2.6.17-11-generic, all up to date recently.

[Bug 48395] Re: ipw3945 produces 99% cpu, making my laptop unusable

2006-10-31 Thread Stephen Irons
The same 99% CPU, fans full-speed problem occurs on my Dell Inspiron
6400 running Dapper with all updates.

I have noticed that the problem is much worse during cold weather. On
winter morning, the room temperature was below 5C, and the problem would
happen every time it started. If I turned turned the machine off as soon
as possible, then back on, it would still run at 99% CPU. If I left the
thing running for a few minutes before rebooting the problem would go
away and everything would start normally: I assume that things had
warmed up internally.

Now that it is spring in the southern hemisphere, the system usually
starts up reliably except on very cold mornings, and the same trick
works.

Perhaps there is something wrong with the temperature detection (it
interprets the very cold temperature as very hot), though I have no idea
how that might make ipw3945 run at full-tick.

One other point is that the fans turn on very early on in the boot
process---after grub, after the splash screen appears, but before the
first line of text.

[Bug 69581] libsvn-javahl no longer installed after updating from Dapper to Edgy

2006-10-31 Thread Stephen Irons
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libsvn-javahl

Under Dapper, I had Eclipse installed with the subclipse plugin to
access Subversion repositories. I had the javaHL 'adaptor' installed so
that subclipse can use the java API for SVN.

I had only the Sun JRE installed, because gij gave very poor
performance: slow and memory hungry.

I do not have a record of exactly which packages were installed.

After upgrading to Edgy, both the subclipse plugin and the javaHL were
not available any more. subclipse was installed by eclipse, so I can
accept that I might have to reinstall that manually.

When I tried to install package libsvn-javahl, it insisted that I also install
the following packages:
   gcj-4.1-base gij gij-4.1 libgcj-bc libgcj-common libgcj7-0

I do not want to install these packages; I have a perfectly good JRE.

Package libsvn-javahl has a dependency on gij OR java1-runtime.

There should be optional dependencies on all other JREs too.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-x/2006/05/msg01108.html

So, the problem as originally described no longer happens :) but
Celestia still does not work :(

I do not know enough about the bug management policies in this forum to
decide whether this issue should be closed or if I should raise a new
issue, or if I should just wait for the debian fix to filter down into
ubuntu. Any suggestions?
