2012-10-22 Thread Thomas Zander
as the original reporter, the feature in kwin to manage the konsole window size
makes this one obsolete and frankly, its a fringe feature request anyway.
Lets move on :)

[Bug 207473] Re: Screen brightness double level changes

2008-10-17 Thread Thomas Zander
Same notebook here: Dell XPS M1330, nvidia GF8400 GS.

I can confirm that, as you say, the amount of brightness 'hops' in my case
have varied from 2 to 4 steps for a single Fn+Up/Down press.
However it seems to me that the number of brightness hops also vary when a menu
is open. The only difference to me is that this progress bar indicating the
brightness level is not shown.

[Bug 224665] Re: ntpd starts but does not contact peers

2008-05-10 Thread Thomas Zander
I can confirm this. I have traced this a little and I believe this is what
happens:
Upon bringing up static network devices quite early in the boot process, the
script
/etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate
is executed which first stops ntpd, then calls ntpdate and then starts ntpd.
Then ntpd is already running (in my case, before bind which it needs to
resolve the peer IP addresses), so a later invoke-rc.d --quiet ntp start in
the boot process does not restart ntpd, and there you go: ntpd is still in the
state where it was before peer IP adresses became resolvable.

(Btw, that is also the reason why you can see ntpd stopping *before*
starting in the boot process. The /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate is trying
to stop ntpd which is not running yet.)

Yep, re-confirmed.

I just made sure that ntpd is not started by /etc/network/if-

2008-04-01 Thread Thomas Zander
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 210575 ***

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

After a few minutes of typical desktop usage, gnome-panel crashes and restarts.
After the crash, the network manager icon does not reappear, but it seems that
the panel itself runs stable after that. At least it did not crash again for
several hours after the first crash.
Immediately after gnome-panel tomboy crashes as well but I presume this is
because the drawing area for its yellow notepad on the panel is no more.

[Bug 144380] ubuntu alters desktopfiles which leads to dataloss

2007-09-24 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

Typing 'kmail' in a konsole will start kmail and on doing anything (like
quitting) kmail will freeze and I have to kill it.
It turns out that kontact is started in the background which then tries to
start kmail again. I had to kill kmail a total of 5 times to get rid of the
problem (actually apt-get remove kmail was the last thing I did).

Asking on #kontact the following diagnosis was made
that's a problem in the desktop files, since the kmail resource backend
(kolab/imap/scalix) is associated with kontact, not kmail.

I think this should be corrected (read; reverted) since killing kmail
leads to dataloss. Especially on dimap accounts.

[Bug 112534] Re: KMix does not respond to XF86AudioRaiseVolume

2007-06-27 Thread Thomas Zander
Ah, KMilo!
That was disabled for some reason...

The result (after starting that service) is that the volume is raised
form 0% to 10% and it can go back to 0% when I press the 'lower'.

Well, its a weird button, really. Its a horizontal-rotating 'disk' that you
can turn, but it only has a small rotation angle. And when you release it it
goes back to the center.
So I guess its like a joystick. Hold it to one side and the computer should
continuesly increase or decrease the volume. Release it and it stops.

I guess that this bugreport can be closed and this misbehavior blamed on

I was surprised to see that using /usr/bin/locate I got results from a
partition that is only readable by my user and actually is an encrypted
partition (openLuks).

I was under the impression that the updateDb application would run as
'nobody' which means it would not read my homedir if I would make it
read only for my user. Which is what I did with my homedir as well as
the /mnt/private partition. (its got a chmod 700 1000.1000)

I mention the encryption here since I consider it a security
vulnerability that a full index of an encrypted partition is stored on
an unencrypted partition.

[Bug 112534] KMix does not respond to XF86AudioRaiseVolume

2007-05-05 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

In Feisty I expected that pressing the volume-up/down buttons on my laptop
would show this kmix window with only a slider and alter the volume.
But kmix is not even started! (also when I start it, nothing happens)

xev shows the signal names just fine, so that is not the issue.

Same with volume down and mute.

[Bug 112535] Alsa fails to detect my audio card

2007-05-05 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

[Feisty]

I have a laptop with Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

There is a kernel module to support this card named snd-hda-intel

After installing kubuntu I got alsa to detect a sound card; which, well, makes
(proper) sound. But the module was never loaded. And the mixer interface is
totally bogus.
For example; I have just 4 controllers. And the main volume doesn't do
anything. Altering the 'line1' actually makes the main volume change.

I did a 'modprobe' and even put the module name in /etc/modules
but for some reason also stays with the card it found previously. I'm annoyed
that there is no such thing as 'alsaconf' anymore, so I'm stuck.

[Bug 112535] Re: Alsa fails to detect my audio card

see;

http://pastebin.ca/472016

I just realized another thing that may be relevant; there are speakers
on this laptop, but I have never heard them. The only way to listen to
the audio is via the headphones (mini-jack) connector.

Thanks

[Bug 111750] Re: Firefox says no Java installed, but sun-java6-jre is installed

2007-05-02 Thread Thomas Zander
Good idea, but unfortunately no go :)

Package sun-java6-plugin is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Ps. this is on Feisty (amd64)

[Bug 110826] Re: vbetool hangs on dpms off

2007-05-01 Thread Thomas Zander
I figured out that in feisty a (quite) old version of the intel driver
was installed by default; while there is a newer driver actually
available using apt-get.

I updated from 1.7 to 1.9 and this problem went away.

[Bug 110826] vbetool hangs on dpms off

2007-04-28 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vbetool

On my laptop I installed Kubuntu Feisty with vbetool 1.0-0ubuntu1
Doing a suspend calls 'vbetool dpms off'
this command (also when called from a konsole) just takes CPU and never
returns. (and doesn't seem to do anything visually)

I can control-c it just fine.

[Bug 110824] software suspend doesn't actually suspend

2007-04-28 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu Feisty I use the icon on my taskbar to software-suspend. (the
battery icon).
After switching to a terminal nothing happens and my Toshiba Techra A8 machine
just keeps on running.

Helpful details;
* vbetool dpms off hangs, so I removed that from the scripts.
* I can just use alt-F7 to switch to X11 and authenticate in the screensaver
after which I can (kind of) continue working.
* Using 'echo 3 /proc/acpi/sleep' makes my machine suspend. Unfortunately I
need to reboot as it doesn't wake up ;)

ext3 is probably the only filesystem it works for, then. Try reiserFS3.

[Bug 77602] Edgy installer doesn't let me use ReiserFs3

2007-01-03 Thread Thomas Zander
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 67130 ***

Public bug reported:

Booting from the kubuntu edgy (i386) installer cd I click on the 'Install' icon
and fail to format as reiserFs.
I then do fdisk and mkreiserfs from a konsole and restart the installer.
Unfortunately the installer refused to let me select a partition as root that
is reiserFS :(

if I try the 'Prepare mount points' screen will refuse to let me go to the next
screen as long as I don't select a partition that is non-reiserfs.
it says that I didn't select a root partition. But I did. And when I go back
and reformat that root partition as ext3; then it works.

I don't know what you guys have against ReiserFS, but I have good
experiences with it and can't ship this system using a filesystem I
don't have good experiences with.

[Bug 70429] config uses 'kview' which is not installed by default.

2006-11-05 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: klipper

In the default klipper configuration the actions connected with images
(jpeg) is to execute kview. But on kubuntu the kview application is not
installed, gwenview is.

I suggest to alter the default configuration so it works for a default
install.

Note I saw this on edgy.

[Bug 69231] Keyboard shortcut ctrl-pageup stopped working

2006-10-30 Thread Thomas Zander
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: konsole

Using konsole from dapper, but also from edgy I see that the keyboard shortcut
used in irssi to scroll back in the buffer no longer works.
The key is ctrl-pageup.

I found that the keyboard shortcut was reserved for switching tabs, so I opened
the shotcuts settings dialog and pressed 'default' there.
I could no longer switch tabs, but the scrolling in the irssi buffer still is
not possible.

[Bug 69231] Re: Keyboard shortcut ctrl-pageup stopped working

2006-10-30 Thread Thomas Zander
After logging in again it started working. No clue why.

I guess you can close the bug, the only problem is that the defaults are
changed which grabs the key for switching tabs. Which I think is a
mistake (its not even the same as other apps in KDE)
