[Bug 1449990] Re: National Data Roaming on the bq Aquaris E4.5

2015-05-12 Thread Tony Espy
@Simon

Thanks so much for the detailed bug report, and suggested fix(es).

I've changed the Importance of this bug to Wishlist, as it's a feature
request that will need to be reviewed by product management before we
can move on it. That said, patches are always welcome...

Also, the original bug was "National Data Roaming on BQ Acqarius E4.5".
I would argue that your suggested implementation goes much further than
this, and would be much more complicated to implement. Some of the
features you suggest also aren't really within our control. Much of the
network registration logic ( ie. determining which operator to choose
based upon signal strength ) is handled within rild, and isn't something
that we can have too much influence on.

For the sake of this bug, I think we should limit it to:

A card preference for general roaming setting:
* Allow any network (international Roaming) with that card
* Allow only national roaming with that card
* Limit to home network (Roaming disabled for that card)

A card preference for data usage (With the valid values as above) to
specify when data may be used.

These two preferences provide a basic implementation of national
roaming. I would suggest breaking out the remainder of comment #7 as a
new bug.

[Bug 1451249] Re: Telephon loses data connection when changing tower

2015-05-12 Thread Tony Espy
@David

Thanks for the bug report. From your bug description, I don't think
you're hitting bug #1435328 as your network indicator shows no
connection, whereas the scenario in that bug was that the indicator
showed a valid mobile data connection when the connection actually had
disconnected. That bug's been marked FixReleased and the related fix to
ofono should be released as an official update imminently.

Regarding your specific problem, I'm assuming you've set 'Data Roaming'
to enabled per bug #1449990?

Are you familiar with adb and/or shh, could you reproduce the described
scenario again and attach the file /var/log/syslog from the phone?

Finally, you say: "when the phone silently switches from O2-DE to o2-de+
or vice versa, the mobile data connection disappears, the symbol that
appear is just the empty "angular" signal, if the screen is locked, and
nothing works".

Do you mean that you screen is on, but locked and you see the data
indicator disconnect? Or did the screen go off, and when you wake the
phone the network indicator shows disconnected before you've unlocked
it?

Have you tried toggling flight-mode and/or mobile data to see if either
also triggers a re-connect?

Finally, if you're using more than one SIM, can you please ensure that
the SIM selected for mobile data is correct in Cellular Settings? We
had an earlier bug on the BQ phone where this setting could change from
one SIM to the other. This was fixed in one of the early updates,
however it's still worth double-checking.

[Bug 1445380] Re: Cannot send MMS when cellular data is not enabled

2015-05-12 Thread Tony Espy
A few comments/questions:

 - what does Android do, does it temporarily enable data for the sole
purpose of uploading a MMS payload?

 - what about receiving, does Android allow receiving a MMS when mobile
data is disabled?

 - iOS8 doesn't allow a MMS message to be sent if mobile data is
disabled. I didn't check the receive case, however note the user
experience is pretty much the same as ours, a failure indication is
shown in Messages, but no real explanation given.

 - it might be a good short term enhancement to add a more meaningful
error popup to the messaging app when mobile data is disabled, or better
yet disallow the user to tap the camera icon in this state.

 - I'm not sure I agree with the statement that received MMS messages
are free, I think this is dependent on the carrier, and is one of the
reasons some phones have the ability to defer downloads of MMS content.

For now, I've confirmed and changed the importance to Wishlist.

[Bug 1450790] Re: Phone with an APN specifying Username/Password, not re-connecting to mobile data until rebooting

2015-05-07 Thread Tony Espy
@Michael

Can you install the version ( 0.9.10.0-4ubuntu15.1~awe4 ) of network-
manager in the phablet-team's telephony PPA and see if it resolves your
problem?

As I mentioned in comment #5, I think your issue is related to bug
#1435776 ( APNs with a Username, but no Password fail ), for which I now
have a fix for. Essentially, the NM ofono settings plugin is adding the
Username and Password properties of the APN to an internal settings
object. As these properties aren't actually needed by NM, my fix
removes them completely.

[Bug 1435776] Re: NM does not activate ofono Inet contexts w/Username but no Password ( eg. giffgaff )

2015-05-07 Thread Tony Espy
This bug is caused by the fact the NM's ofono plugin checks for the
existence of Username and Password properties in the APN, and if found,
adds them as settings to the NM_SETTING_GSM instance ( which is added to
the associated NM_CONNECTION instance ).

For some reason, the fact that only 'Username' is set doesn't seem to
effect the first connection attempt, but them for some reason, the NM
settings code resets its secrets logic and thinks that a 'Password' is
required the next time a connection attempt occurs.

Rather than debug the settings secrets logic, I opted to remove the code
in the ofono plugin which adds these settings, as in reality, NM does
nothing with them, they're actually used by ofono directly.

Likewise the same code ( in src/settings/plugins/ofono/parser.c ) adds
an APN setting to the NM_SETTING_GSM instance, however it searches for
the APN in the context using the key "Apn", when the key is actually
named "AccessPointName". So, the code was always adding an
NM_SETTING_GSM_APN with value of "".

I will add a branch to the bug later this afternoon.

In the meanwhile, anyone who'd like to test can use the version (
0.9.10.0-4ubuntu15.1~awe4 ) in the phablet-team's telephony PPA:

2015-05-06 Thread Tony Espy
@Michael

Thanks for the detailed response.

As for its importance, I agree this is Critical and am working on it as
we speak. I have a hunch there may be a previously undiscovered race
condition in the NM ofono connection activation code that's causing this
problem.

Would you be willing to install a test package on your phone ( which
requires making the root fs write-able )? If not, it might be possible
to run NM in the foreground from /tmp...

[Bug 1450790] Re: Phone not connecting to mobile data until rebooting

2015-05-05 Thread Tony Espy
@Michael

Thanks for the updates to the bug. I mentioned the custom APN as when I
examined your syslog, it appeared that Network Manager was only trying
to activate context3, which was the __ubuntu_custom_internet_apn.

Regarding the APN editor, it's been in rough shape, and one bug ( now
fixed ) was that if you just happened to visit the settings page, but
didn't do anything, a custom APN would be created automatically. We
actually spent time working on APN editor improvements at a sprint last
week.

Finally after looking at your logs, a couple of observations:

1. You're roaming, and have enabled data roaming

2. At times ( 14:11, 15:30, 22:29, 22:35 - 23:14 ) it looks like you
have poor cell reception as your phone is dropping of GPRS quite a bit,
and usually when the phone re-attaches, NM fails to activate context1
every time, and the error is 'no-secrets'. Note, GPRS detaching and re-
attaching usually means you're losing a connection from your operator,
but as we don't log operator registration itself, I can't tell if it's
just GPRS that's dropping.

3. The only time NM succeeds activating context1 is after reboots, which
I can see from your syslog.

4. Are you aware that your phone tried to attach to a LasarJet printer??
;)-

Finally, I think this may be related to bug #1435776 as it deals with an
APN with 'Username', but no 'Password', but that's just because both
involve secrets.

[Bug 1435776] Re: NM does not activate ofono Inet contexts w/Username but no Password ( eg. giffgaff )

2015-05-05 Thread Tony Espy
@John

Critical should be reserved for crashes, and/or serious bugs that have
no workaround.

That said, this is one of the last 0.9.10 regressions ( I hope ). We'll
definitely fix for the next OTA, if not before. This may be related to
bug #1450790 as well.

[Bug 1450790] Re: Phone not connecting to mobile data until rebooting

2015-05-01 Thread Tony Espy
@Michael

Thanks for the logs...

If you can reproduce reliably, could you add the output of 'list-modems'
( found in /usr/share/ofono/scripts ) and 'list-contexts'?

The error logs you provided show a couple of weird things...

First, I saw a whole bunch of SIM PIN errors reported by ofono. It
appears that you have two SIMs installed in the phone as well, are
either of these SIMs PIN-locked? The indicator-network log shows an
error unlocking a SIM too.

Also, from the syslog it appears that at some point you used the APN
Editor, and there's a custom Internet APN with a blank AccessPointName
defined. This APN looks to be the same APN that's returning errors when
NM tries to activate it ( see errors for context3 in the syslog ).

Could you try the following and see if it resolves your problems?

As root:

# stop ofono
# cd /var/lib/ofono

There should be at least two directories that are a long string of
numbers. The numbers are the SubscriberIdentity from your SIM cards.
Ignore the dirs with trailing "-", and cd into the other directories and
remove the files named 'gprs'. Or if you'd like, you can edit these
files and just remove the offending __custom_internet_apn context.

# reboot

This will cause your phone to reprovision itself, and get rid of the
offending APN.

We actually spent quite a bit of time this past week at our sprint
working on the APN editor, and hopefully can roll out some improvements
( including the ability to force re-provisioning from the UI ) soon.

[Bug 1331813] Re: Support ipv6 mobile connections

2015-04-30 Thread Tony Espy
One key step is making sure that ofono is stopped before
editing/replacing the gprs settings file. If ofono is running, any
changes made will be ignored.

Regarding adb permission problems, you may need to run adb shell, then
use sudo to move the new file into place ( again after stopping ofono ).

This has been proven to work, so you just need to ensure you carefully
follow that steps in comment #1. Finally, another alternative is to
purchase a SIM from a different carrier.

Also we're going to make a change which will automatically make this
conversion happen, as IPv6 isn't on our short-term work list.

[Bug 1338758] Re: Re-provisioning GPRS/MMS contexts requires re-starting ofono

2015-04-30 Thread Tony Espy
Assigned to Alfonso. We've discussed a few possible solutions.

Restarting ofono is a non-starter from the settings UI as it requires
root permission to stop/start ofono, and also to delete the GPRS
settings file.

Another alternative is to offline the modem ( via URfkill , delete all
of the contexts ( via ofono's ConnectionManager iface ), and then ensure
that re-provisioning is triggered in this case.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-29 Thread Tony Espy
@eotakos

Providing instructions for how to build the package from scratch are
outside of the scope of this bug. You'd need to install all of the
build dependencies for ofono, most of which aren't available from the
default root filesystem. The only safe way to do this is to install a
chroot on your device, but again this is beyond the scope of this bug.

I think you're much better off holding off for a few more days as the
pending fix is currently staged, and has recently been approved by QA.
It should hopefully land *soon*, although I can't give you an exact
date.

If you've made your device writable, and wish to install the package
directly, you could use apt to install it from the RTM archive, however
doing so, could prevent future updates from working properly.

You could in theory extract the binary ( ofonod ) from the package, and
run it in the foreground in /tmp, however again I think you're better
off waiting for the update. The version of ofono with the fix is:
1.12.bzr6894+15.04.20150415~rtm-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 1426923] Re: Allow ubuntu-system-settings to set a device's firmware

2015-04-29 Thread Tony Espy
@Jamie

I asked Alfosno to prototype granting access with a DBus configuration
change alone as proof-of-concept. Note, as the script we've been using
for testing is a Python script, the "Introspectable" fragment was
needed. As system settings is Qt-based, this may not be needed. We'll
need Jonas to confirm.

As this approach works, I'm not sure whether or not the added polkit
layer actually buys us much more security. As previously mentioned, all
non-core click apps are confined, and cannot access DBus on their own.
The only way an unconfined phablet processes could land on the phone (
besides our core apps ) is if a user enables developer-mode and installs
the app via dpkg or directly via a binary installer, which means the
extra polkit protection could easily be circumvented.

I think a developer would also discover pretty quickly that a new app
was malicious if the WiFi hardware stopped working as a client, due to
it's being put into hotspot mode.

[Bug 1446584] Re: [krillin] On airplane mode battery discharge more rapidly than with airplane mode off

2015-04-27 Thread Tony Espy
Note, Samuele asked whether or not the push-client also needs to monitor
URKill's DeviceAdded and DeviceRemoved. Note, these might be generated
for a WiFi device that's being controlled via hybris.

Also, one other thing that might be useful is creating a urkill script
similar to monitor-ofono, which could be used to monitor signals
generated by URfkill.

[Bug 1445080] Re: Cellular data not activated after exiting flight mode

2015-04-22 Thread Tony Espy
I've just tried on krillin ( vivid-proposed / #193 ); conformed NM
version is: 0.9.10.0-4ubuntu15. I had a single AT&T SIM in the first
slot.

WiFi disabled, I toggled FM on/off ten times. Sometimes I'd tap the
toggle as soon as it became active, sometimes I waited up to 1-2m before
toggling. Although there's lag to search and find a network, once
signal bars appear, the 2g icon appears shortly ( <30s ) thereafter.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-22 Thread Tony Espy
@Alfonso

So I agree that the modem disconnect seen when WiFi is toggled off is
rare, that said, per my previous comment #38, it looks NM definitely
gets in a state where it doesn't recover. I didn't see where you
specified how long you waited after the disconnect; it's possible that
this is a permutation of bug #1418077, but as I didn't see a state
message showing the modem transition to "searching", I don't think this
is the case.

This may just be a timing issue. In this case, the route failures cause
the connection failure, which is different than a connection failing due
to the context being de-activated. Maybe it's this case which leaves
the modem in 'connected' state?

I will try my force-route failure experiment on krillin/RTM and see if
it triggers the same scenario.

Also, this may be related to the FM failures seen in RTM on arale and
mako; see bug #1445080 for details.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-21 Thread Tony Espy
@Alfonso

Regarding comment #26, to be clear, your exact scenario was this:

1. Install SIM with no data credit in slot1; this connection comes up, but any
attempt to send/receive data fails
2. Activate WiFi, and wait till it associates with an AP
3. Disable WiFi
( this forces a disconnect of the modem, and the corresponding route
configuration fails )

What I see from the logs is the Netlink failures, at which point I also
see the NM device state go from activated to failed ( reason: ip-config-
unavailable ). NM tries context1 ( 'Internet movil' ) again and it
fails the next time due to 'no-secrets', which seems odd. It then moves
on and tries context3 ( '___ubuntu custom internet apn' w/a null APN
name ) and each time it fails with reason = 'modem-no-carrier'. This is
odd, as I only ever see a single 'now in state registered' ( output by
nm-modem-ofono.c::update_ofono_enabled() ), and never see the modem
become unregistered ( which happens when Online, Attached or Powered go
FALSE ).

Looking at the NM ofono activation code, although the error printed is
"could not activate context, modem is not registered', the code actually
just checks whether the modem is in REGISTERED state when it tries to
connect. It's possible that the modem state is still CONNECTED, and
somehow this didn't get reset to REGISTERED when the Netlink errors
occurred? The modem state is only set back to REGISTERED in
disconnect_done () and update_ofono_enabled (). Perhaps in this case,
since the modem state isn't reset, the subsequent activation attempts
will all fail.

If you can still reliably reproduce, could you turn on NM debug logging
( sudo nmcli general logging level debug ) and try to reproduce again
and provide system logs. I will also try to force a modem disconnect (
via tinfoil wrapping ), and see what happens on vivid.

This theory also provides more weight to the thought that this is a
vivid-only issue with NM, as the ofono modem state code is radically
different in NM 0.9.8.

[Bug 1446584] Re: [krillin] On airplane mode battery discharge more rapidly than with airplane mode off

2015-04-21 Thread Tony Espy
Note, on IRC there was some discussion about the push-client using
urfkill for both monitoring FlightMode and the state of the WiFi device,
this is possible, but will requires more than a simple DBus signal
listener change.

When a urfkill device changes, urfkill sends a "DeviceChanged" signal
with the path of the DBus object ( eg. /org/freedesktop/URfkill/0 ).
The properties of this device can then be queried using the standard
DBus.Properties.GetAll() method.

Of interest in this case would 'type=1' ( WiFi ) and 'soft' property,
which indicates whether or not the device is blocked. If FM is
enabled, all devices are blocked initially. If the WiFi device was
enabled while in FM, another "DeviceChanged" signal would be emitted...

This isn't ideal, but it would work. I will add an enhancement
request/bug to urfkill that suggests the addition of BlockIdx and Block
signals. This would allow a client to just listen for a 'Block' signal
and examine it's 'type' and 'soft' values which is closer to the current
signal logic which listens for NM 'WirelessEnabled' PropertyChanged
signals.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-21 Thread Tony Espy
@Alfonso

To be clear, I attempted to simulate the failure by hard-coding a route
failure on the 3rd route switch ( when WiFi is toggled off, NM replaces
the route with the modem's interface ). This definitely left the
connection inconsistent with the actual routing table, but I next was
able to deactivate the context from the command-line, and NM
successfully restarted the connection. So again, I don't think the
scenario you describe in comment #26 is possible on RTM, so we'll just
release the ofono patch.

I will try to force the scenario on vivid and see if I can reproduce the
problem you described with NM not being able to re-establish the
connection after a route failure before disconnect.

[Bug 1445580] Re: Impossible to end a call after switching to airplane mode

2015-04-21 Thread Tony Espy
I marked the dialer(app) task as Incomplete, as I'm not sure it requires
a change.

I also added an indicator-network task as it's not clear the indicator
should allow flight-mode to be enabled when an active call exists. This
should absolutely be prevented during an emergency call, but I would
argue that it should be prevented during any active calls.

I'm not sure if there's a separate Unity/framework mechanism which would
prevent "ear-induced-flight-mode", but maybe this could be accomplished
via the proximity sensor as an alternative ( only if foolproof ).

Can you include an image number? Do you think this is a krillin-

Also how repeatable is the problem? Can you add some details of what
you were doing when the problem occurred? Is this related to testing

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-20 Thread Tony Espy
@Alfonso

So looking closer at NM 0.9.8, the routing is updated by nm-policy.c in
its device_state_changed() function. It calls update_routing_and_dns()
in several places, which in turn calls update_ip4_routing(), which in
turn calls nm_system_replace_default_ip4_route(). Only the last
function returns an error code, so if adding the default route fails,
the error doesn't bubble up, and the system is left partially
configured.

I hacked nm_system_replace_default_ip4_route() to return an error on
it's third invocation, then rebooted the system with WiFi disabled.
The first call to replace_default_ip4_route() happens when the mobile
data connection is established on reboot. Next I activated WiFi and the
phone connected to an AP, that's the second route call. Finally I
disabled WiFi and this triggers the third route call which fails. At
this point we have a connection that NM still thinks is connected, with
an empty routing table.

Next I deactivated the context manually, and NM turned around and re-
established the connection, so I *think* this proves that the scenario
you described in comment #26 isn't happening with NM 0.9.8.

At this point, as changing the NM logic isn't super straight-forward, I
would suggest that we don't attempt to patch NM for utopic-RTM at this
point, unless someone else is able to prove for certain that NM can get
wedged in a bad state when the routing configuration fails.

[Bug 1445080] Re: Cellular data not activated after exiting flight mode

2015-04-20 Thread Tony Espy
I did managed to reproduce this on arale ( vivid-proposed #165 ) with
the recent version of NM which fixes bug #1418077.

'nmcli d' shows the modem as disconnected. list-modems shows the
ConnectionManager interface both powered and attached per Alfonso's
original description. The modem is registered to a carrier using UMTS,
and list-contexts shows no active contexts.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-14 Thread Tony Espy
I think the issue is the the nm_system_apply_ip4_config () method always
returns TRUE, ignoring any errors from nm_system_device_set_ip4_route
(), which returns NULL to signify an error adding a route.

I've added a preliminary fix for this, by adding logic to check for NULL
and immediately return FALSE. instead of continuing to iterate the
through any remaining routes to be added. Note, this may need to be re-
worked to ensure that route object references are all properly cleaned
up, but it should suffice for testing the fix.

A version of this first attempt at patching can found in my PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~awe/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Note, as it's a FIX for RTM, it's the 0.9.8 version.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-14 Thread Tony Espy
Here's the latest update on what we know about this bug.

First, we have working fix for ofono's behavior when a
DATA_CALL_LIST_CHANGED message is received with an empty call list, and
the context stays active but becomes stale/non-working. This should
land in a silo by early tomorrow.

Second, Alfonso has pointed out that there may be additional network-
manager changes required. His original testing performed on
krillin/vivid, and as there's still a race between the disconnect from
ofono, and NM changing the default route, it's still possible for an
error to be thrown when NM configures the default route for the modem.
When this happen, NM leaves the connection in an inconsistent state.
When he tried the same scenario on krillin/RTM plus the patched ofono,
it worked. I believe he may have just been lucky, and the disconnect
happened before the default route logic ran. This is a guess, so we
have some more work to in figuring this out.

As these fixes are critical enough to warrant a hot-fix to RTM, we're
going to concentrate on it first, and then address vivid.

[Bug 1436427] Re: Turning off WiFi doesn't set a route after the modem connects data

2015-04-14 Thread Tony Espy
@Sebastien

We have a proposed ofono fix that definitely improves the situation,
however nobody else with Canonical besides yourself an Michael have been
able to reproduce on RTM. See bug #1435328 for an update on the
analysis so far.

Could you install the version ( 1.12.bzr6894+15.04.20150413.2~rtm-
0ubuntu1~awe1 ) of ofono from my personal PPA:

https://launchpad.net/~awe/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

...and also make sure you have network-manager version
0.9.10.0-4ubuntu14 installed. It's currently in silo 009, but should
be landing in the archive shortly.

I'm trying to determine if we need a fix to network-manager in RTM as
well, per Alfonso's comments in the other bug.

So in theory, NM should react to the context 'Settings' property
changing to empty, and tear down the connection.

For vivid testing, it's important however that the most recent version
of NM which fixes the NM 5m reconnect bug #1418077 is used. This
version is currently in the following silo:

https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-service/+archive/ubuntu/landing-009

...but as it's been marked PASSED by QA, it should be landing in the
archive shortly.

We're currently testing RTM to see whether or not the same issue exists
with NM.

[Bug 1435328] Re: Leaving Wifi does not connect to mobile carrier data (GSM)

2015-04-13 Thread Tony Espy
OK, I think I figured it out after looking at a radio log of the problem
reproduced by Alfonso.

First, there are a couple of MTK-specific unsolicited events that are
received that look suspicious:

RIL_UNSOL_RESPONSE_PS_NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED
UNSOL_RESTRICTED_STATE_CHANGED
RIL_UNSOL_RESPONSE_PS_NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED
UNSOL_RESTRICTED_STATE_CHANGED
UNSOL_DATA_CALL_LIST_CHANGED

Turns the mtkmodem code overrides the normal NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED
unsolicted request with the PS_NETWORK_STATE_CHANGED request. The
RESTRICTED_STATE_CHANGED request doesn't seem to be listened for at all.

That said, I also see a UNSOL_DATA_CALL_LIST_CHANGED with the following
payload:

01 00 00 00 F2 03 00 00 09 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

01 00 00 00 = unsolicted
F2 03 00 00 = UNSOL_DATA_CALL_LIST_CHANGED
09 00 00 00 = version
00 00 00 00 = number of calls

The function ril_gprs_context_call_list_changed() in /drivers/rilmodem
/gprs-context.c handles this message. If tries to iterator over the
call list, and if disconnect == TRUE, or active_cid_found == FALSE, it
calls set_context_disconnect(). This function however only sets the
internal rilmodem struct to disconnected state, and doesn't inform the
ofono core of the disconnect. So, it leaves the connection internally
disconnected, but to the rest of the system, it's still connected.

I imagine this may be the same bug as bug #1436427 ( which has been a
theory all along ).

I'm working on a fix now, and should have something available to test by
tomorrow.

[Bug 1441623] [NEW] optimize ofono context property-changed logic

2015-04-08 Thread Tony Espy
Public bug reported:

This bug is bring reported as of network-manager version
0.9.10.0-4ubuntu13 ( latest in vivid at bug filing time ).

The code in src/devices/wwan/nm-modem-ofono.c which handles context
property_change signals should be optimized.

The function context_properties_changed() watches for key == 'Settings',
and then calls ofono_context_get_ip_properties(). This function then
calls dbus_g_proxy_call_with_timeout() to invoke the 'GetProperties'
method of the context interface. This is a synchronous DBus call which
really isn't necessary as the payload for the 'PropertyChanged' signal
already contained the required data ( ie. the IP settings ).

I installed network-manager 0.9.10.0-4ubuntu14~mtrudel1 from ppa

longer see a hotspot from an iPhone when it's enabled.

I can see it from my desktop, and from krillin running RTM.

[Bug 1440917] [NEW] ofono read_contexts code needs some re-work

2015-04-06 Thread Tony Espy
Public bug reported:

This bug is bring reported as of network-manager version
0.9.10.0-4ubuntu13 ( latest in vivid at bug filing time ).

The code in src/devices/wwan/nm-modem-ofono.c needs some optimization.

Currently, the function ofono_read_contexts() is triggered when the
modem becoming enabled, which happens when the three private boolean
flags modem_online, gprs_powered, and gprs_attached are all TRUE, or
when a new context is detected via a 'ContextAdded' signal sent by
ofono's ConnectionManager interface.

This function in turn, synchronously reads ( with a 2s timeout ) the
ConnectionManager's 'SubscriberIdentity' property ( aka 'IMSI' ), and
then calls the DBus method com.canonical.NMOfono.ReadImsiContexts, which
triggers the ofono plugin to re-read the contexts directly from ofono's
gprs settings file ( found in /var/lib/ofono// ).

This could be optimized by instead having NM read the IMSI whenever the
ConnectionManager's 'Powered' property is set, caching the value, and
watching for changes to the 'SubscriberIdentity'.

Also it's curious that the contexts aren't re-read when a
'ContextRemoved' signal is received.

[Bug 1418077] Re: After connection drops, mobile-data takes ~5m to re-connect

2015-04-05 Thread Tony Espy
So I actually have a fix that seems to work now.

There was an additional problem I discovered where the disconnect_done
logic in nm-modem-ofono.c was setting the modem state to CONNECTED,
which was incorrect. I've pushed a new branch and associated with this
bug. It needs a bit more cleanup before it's ready to land, but looks
promising at this point.

[Bug 1425172] Re: Network indicator lists the non-exist AP (timeout for the AP to be removed is too big, ~6min)

2015-04-02 Thread Tony Espy
I tested krillin #20 ( ubuntu-touch/ubuntu-rtm/14.09 ) and it took ~6:30
for my Android hotspot to disappear from the scan list ( using 'nmcli d
list | grep Anroid' ).

I tested my desktop ( Macair w/Intel WiFi ) running an up-to-date utopic
image and it took 6m for an AP to disappear the first try, and ~7:30m
the second time! network-manager version is: network-manager
0.9.8.8-0ubuntu28.

I tested arale #159 ( ubuntu-touch/vivid-proposed ), which includes the
latest network-manager in vivid, and it took ~6:30 for my Android
hotspot to disappear from the scan list ( this time using 'nmcli d wifi
list' as nmcli changed with 0.9.10 ). On a side-note, it appears that
arale doesn't do any background scanning while associated to an access
point. I had to forget my current network before I could pickup a new
iPhone or Android hotspot in the scan list. I'll enter a new bug for
this.

[Bug 1413672] Re: The SIM used for data in MTK-based dual-standby modems can change after carrier re-registration or reboot

2015-04-02 Thread Tony Espy
Tested with krillin #20 (ubuntu-touch/ubuntu-rtm/14.09).

While the basic fix works, it can still cause the SIM selection to flip
once after upgrade.

Here's the scenario, if two SIMs are in the phone, and the user hasn't
yet used the Cellular Settings to pin a SIM for mobile data, then both
SIMs will have 'Powered=1' in the associated gprs settings files.

Let's say for instance, that mobile data was using SIM2 when the upgrade
occurs. At this point, when the phone boots, say SIM1 takes longer to
register thant SIM2. When SIM1 comes online, the gprs settings file is
read, and 'Powered=1', so the fix causes the other SIM's 'Powered' to be
set to 0. This doesn't happen when SIM1 came online, because since SIM2
wasn't online yet, it didn't have a valid gprs atom, so it's 'Powered'
property couldn't yet be set to '0'.

This will only happen the first time after upgrade, and only if the user
previously had two SIMs installed *and* they'd never used Cellular
Settings to pin mobile data to a specific SIM yet, and the non-selected
SIM comes online *after* the SIM that currently is being used for mobile
data.

>From this point on, the fix works as expected... and the selected SIM
will only change in response to the user changing the setting.

One other thing to check... did you have more than one SIM installed in
