[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound because of pulseaudio hang

2009-05-02 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I've been seeing the same thing on Jaunty. If Firefox is left open for a
day or so on, e.g., Hulu, then if I come back and try to use it it will
hang. Most other apps can recover from this state though b/c they just
reconnect to Pulse.

Re-opening.

[Bug 237819] Re: Transfer of focus to Find/Replace dialog in Eclipse is considered focus stealing by Compiz

2009-06-23 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Just checked on Jaunty and it seems to be fixed. The focus transfer is
now only prevented if the focus stealing prevention level is set to Very
High. If it is though then Eclipse still ends up with keypresses going
nowhere, but that's an Eclipse bug.

Marking as Fix Released in Compiz. Leaving open in Eclipse to track the
remaining ignored-keypresses bug.

[Bug 404448] [NEW] [regression][karmic] Using "Open Directory" in VLC to open a DVD-on-disk opens the DVD drive instead

2009-07-25 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

I am running the VLC package from Karmic on Jaunty 32-bit. I have a
"DVD-on-disk", i.e., the contents of a DVD's root directory copied to my
hard disk, containing a VIDEO_TS directory with all the VOB files and
IFO files and such. If I try to open it with File -> Open Directory...
in VLC and navigate to inside the VIDEO_TS directory, then VLC opens the
DVD that is in my _drive_--i.e., it opens the MRL dvd://. If there is no
DVD in the drive then of course this results in it displaying an error.

If I select the directory that _contains_ the VIDEO_TS folder, VLC opens
the raw VOB files in a playlist (i.e., not as a DVD).

If I use Open Disc... and browse to select the directory as the disc
device, then VLC opens the DVD-on-disk correctly regardless of whether I
select the VIDEO_TS directory or its parent directory.

The expected behaviour is that VLC should also open the files as a DVD
when using Open Directory...

Note that this is a regression from Jaunty. In Jaunty the Open
Directory... function would open the DVD-on-disk as a DVD (at least if I
selected the VIDEO_TS directory ... I don't think I ever tried selecting
its parent directory).

Btw, I discovered that if I use Compiz's zoom feature to slightly zoom

2009-04-05 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
FYI, the problem was that an instance of the old btnx daemon had died
once and left around a /var/run/btnx.pid, so "btnx -k" was failing with
an error since it couldn't find the process named in that pid file, and
that killed the upgrade procedure. This should be more robust.

[Bug 380817] [NEW] [Jaunty][regression] TwinView with different vertical resolutions cuts off bottom of larger screen

2009-05-26 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-180

I am running 32-bit Jaunty on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with an NVIDIA
GeForge Go 7900 GS. Compiz is ON. I have two screens with different
vertical resolutions (1920x1200 and 1920x1080). When I enable NVIDIA
TwinView, the extra space at the bottom of the larger screen is cut off
and shows black.

THIS IS A REGRESSION. In previous versions of Ubuntu, the whole screen
was usable.

Some additional notes:

- Nothing but black ever displays in the extra section, except the cursor,
which shows up normally.
- Maximized windows fill the _usable_ space (i.e., they do NOT extend into the
black section).
- Right-clicking in the black section _does_ bring up a context menu, but only
the part that is above the black section is visible.

[Bug 411785] [NEW] [regression] alltray cannot un-hide the app if started from click-mode

2009-08-10 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alltray

I am using Ubuntu Jaunty 32-bit on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with an
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS and Compiz enabled. Recently I have found that
a feature of alltray that used to work has broken: "click-mode". When I
start alltray in click-mode and click on an already-running app to hide
it, the "Show/Hide" button on the new tray icon won't bring it back!
Instead it does nothing. Nor does clicking on the tray icon do anything.
To get it back I have to right click and choose Undock.

The strange thing is that if I don't run alltray in click-mode but
instead let alltray start the app itself--e.g., by running "alltray
evolution" on the command line--then everything works as expected.

Note that although I am running Jaunty, a few packages have been
installed from Karmic. List is below.

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound becuse of pulseaudio hang

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Steve, I think you might be right about this being Flash's fault.
Thinking back, I think maybe the problem has only happened to me when I
left Hulu open. And Flash's ALSA sound support is known to be buggy, so
that would make sense. But unfortunately Pulse output is the default
ALSA plugin for ALL users now, so we can't confirm this just by asking
the people here if they each have that turned on.

Maybe another thing to find out is what Flash version we're all using?
The bug might only affect certain versions. I'm using 10.0.1.218,
installed via the flashplugin-nonfreebeta package.

[Bug 288093] Re: Can't play sound becuse of pulseaudio hang

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Yes, pulseaudio is definitely at fault, but it may be brought on by
Flash. I recall that the issue is that Flash leaks ALSA handles or
something, which might contribute to resource exhaustion in Pulse, and
the error messages seems suggestive of that.

[Bug 306088] [NEW] Flash exits full screen moments after entering it

2008-12-07 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

Whenever I enter full screen mode in any Flash app, the full screen view
only stays up for about a second. After that it automatically exits full
screen mode. The full screen view appears to work fine for the one
second that it stays up (e.g., the video continues to update properly),
but it always exits full screen mode right after. I have tested Firefox
and Epiphany and the bug occurs in both.

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid 32-bit on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with an
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS and Compiz enabled. I have dual monitors in
the "Separate X Screen" configuration. Their resolutions are 1920x1200
and 1920x1080. The bug happens on both monitors. I have not customized
or altered the configuration of Flash in any way (e.g., no -extrasound
package, no .asoundrc, etc.).

[Bug 317353] [NEW] Evolution: "Unknown Mailbox" and "UID not allowed now" when using IMAP

2009-01-14 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm running Ubuntu Intrepid 32-bit, but I've had this bug for a long
time. Every now and then, after downloading some new message headers
from my Gmail account (using IMAP), Evolution gets into a state where it
can't download anything new after that. If I then attempt to open one of
the new messages that I got headers for, I get the error:

Unable to retrieve message
IMAP command failed: Unknown Mailbox: INBOX (Failure)

If I try again (by going to an old, cached message and then going back),
I get a different error:

Unable to retrieve message
IMAP command failed: UID not allowed now.

Images of the errors are attached. Retrying again continues to give the
second error from then on. The problem clears once I exit Evolution and
restart it.

Agreed, these are the same bug. Confirming this one. See my duplicate
for details of what I observe. It looks like pretty much everything I
mentioned there has been covered here. One exception is that I have once
observed the problem happen while in the middle of playing sound. In
that scenario, the sound card keeps replaying the last few hundred
milliseconds of sound until pulseaudio is killed.

Also, every time I've tried kill -15 it hasn't worked.

remembers the settings when connecting the next time, and there is no
directory created for the network in ~/.gconf. I do however notice an
odd error in nm-applet's stderr output:

** (nm-applet:x): WARNING **:   nmi_save_network_info(): Error
saving secret for wireless network '' in keyring: 5

(The x's are censored system details.)

The error seems to be harmless, though, because everything works as far
as I can tell.

[Bug 152493] Re: Title bars on windows disappear every 7 times the title bar text changes

Me too. Fresh gutsy install. Again, only when maximized, and the 7 isn't
set in stone. Card is NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS. I saw in this in Debian
before the Compiz/Beryl merger so it is probably upstream in the
original Compiz code. See my own screenshot attached.

[Bug 136711] Re: Show Hidden Files broken in common dialogs

2007-11-12 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I get this on a 100% fresh gutsy install with a slightly different
behaviour. When I follow the steps in the original report, disabling
Show Hidden Files at the end makes the file picker instead show ONLY
hidden files, and only a few of them at that! For this to happen though,
you must have closed and re-opened the file picker after enabling Show
Hidden Files (as directed in the report). I have not encountered the
duplicates from Ryiden's video.

Attached is my own desktop session capture.

[Bug 151426] Re: Nvidia flickers since kernel 2.6.22-13 and -14

2007-11-13 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Not sure if it's the same, but I also experience a bug where the screen
flickers when compiz is on. It's just a single screen-wide "blink" (to
black) and is fairly rare. I have a fresh Gutsy install and an NVIDIA
GeForce Go 7900 GS. I can provide more info if needed, or file a
separate report if you think that's best.

[Bug 162808] Package up the MPlayer binary codecs

2007-11-14 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mplayer

There is currently no Ubuntu package for the MPlayer binary codecs that
are found at http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html#binary_codecs.
There should be. These codecs are necessary to play certain things, for
example RealVideo 3 and 4. Perhaps you'd have to put them in non-free or
multiverse, I don't know, but they should be somewhere. Currently, if a
newbie was to run a search through the APT archives for "realvideo" in
the hopes of finding something that could play the rmvb file that they
just downloaded, it'd turn up nothing, and they'd conclude that
Ubuntu/Linux can't play it.

[Bug 164586] "Open" button in Import Folder in Rhythmbox does nothing if pressed immediately in certain folders

2007-11-22 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I have a fresh, up-to-date gutsy i686 installation.

In Rhythmbox, when choosing Import Folder, the Gnome open folder dialog
will open in the last folder that was opened (as expected). For certain
folders, if the user clicks Open immediately (i.e., that folder is
already the one that the user wants to import), then nothing happens.
The dialog does not close and there is no error message. In order to
open the folder, the user must navigate to a different folder, navigate
back, and then click Open. For me, this happens with "~/Untagged Music",
but not with ~/Music, ~/Desktop, or ~/. As a test, it also happens for
me with "~/Folder with Spaces", "~/FolderWithoutSpaces", and
"~/Folderwithoutcapitals". For the folders with which this occurs, it is
100% reproducible.

Note that I have also seen this bug in Debian.

Repro steps:

Try the following steps with a variety of different folders (recommended
to try creating the ones I named above).

1) Open rhythmbox.
2) Choose File -> Import Folder. Navigate to a folder of your choice and click
Open.
3) Choose File -> Import Folder again. (The dialog begins in the same folder
that you opened in (2).)
4) Click Open without navigating anywhere.

Results: Eventually, you should find a folder for which step (4) consistently
does nothing.
Expected: The folder should be imported.
Workaround: Navigate to a different folder, navigate back, and click Open.

Note that since Rhythmbox doesn't track additions to imported folders,
users may frequently be re-importing the same folder, so particular
users may see this bug a lot.

[Bug 164589] Occasional screen-wide "blink" when using compiz

2007-11-22 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have a fresh, up-to-date i686 gutsy install and an NVIDIA GeForce Go
7900 GS on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. With compiz enabled, I occasionally
see an artifact where the entire screen "blinks" to black. Some days it
happens not at all; other days it may happen several times, even in the
span of a few minutes. Sometimes the blink seems to start from the
bottom of the screen and then go up, as if the video card renders the
bottom first or something. Other times it seems as if it is only the
bottom half that blinks, but that could just be my eyes failing to pick
up the entire event. Unfortunately I haven't noticed the event being
correlated with anything else.

I am going to try to capture the event with a desktop session recorder,
but I'd be surprised if that works. If not, I might try to record it
with a real camera.

[Bug 172503] Compiz + separate X server multi-head nvidia setup => GUI responses delayed by 1 second

2007-11-27 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Just like the title says.

I have an up-to-date i686 gutsy install on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop with
an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS and a second monitor (a SONY KDL46XBR4 LCD
TV). If I enable Compiz and configure NVIDIA to enable the second
display using the Separate X Server option in nvidia-settings, then the
response to most GUI actions is delayed by 1 second. For example, if I
click on the Applications button at the top-left of the desktop, the
menu does not appear until after 1 second has gone by (though the button
does change to orange immediately). Similarly if I click on menus within
applications, or right-click on tray icons, or press Ctrl+Space to bring
up SCIM. Text input is not delayed though. Also, I notice that the
application SMPlayer--a KDE program--does not have any delay.

If compiz is not enabled, then this bug does not occur. If NVIDIA is set
to use TwinView, then this bug does not occur. Only the separate X

[Bug 192524] [NEW] Hardy: Dangling libglx.so symlink in nvidia-glx-new breaks 3D acceleration

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-new

In nvidia-glx-new version 169.09+2.6.24.9-8.22 (i.e., the hardy
version), /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so is a symlink to
"libglx.so.169.09". However, that file is at
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so.169.09, so the symlink is
dangling and attempts by the X server to load the "glx" module fail,
preventing 3D apps from working. If you manually change the symlink to
go to "extensions/libglx.so.169.09", the bug is fixed.

Looking at the script, it is compiz.real that is segfaulting. I have
attached a backtrace obtained with gdb (not really sure if I did it
properly though). The segfault occurs in XGetXCBConnection.

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
FYI, this problem still exists. I am now using the compiz versions in
the gutsy repos again (b/c latest hardy ones are broken), but I have
upgraded the NVIDIA driver to the hardy version (169.09).

Also, I have found yet another class of UI elements that experience this
delay: the drop-down boxes on web pages in Firefox (like the one on this
page for changing bug status :) ).

[Bug 164589] Re: Occasional screen-wide "blink" when using opengl apps (compiz also) and Nvidia cards

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Lorenzo:

I've found that XVideo bug filed as bug 147926. The reporter says it
happens when you turn compiz on and then off, and I found that's true
for me too, so probably that's what you and me were getting and it's
unrelated to the "blinks". You may be interested to know that the latest
NVIDIA drivers (169.09) fix that XVideo bug.

All:

I can confirm though that the latest NVIDIA drivers do NOT fix THIS bug.
I've found work-arounds for all my other compiz problems though, so I'm
going to start using it again. I'm going to run in TwinView mostly b/c I
have two monitors, so I'll be able to confirm if Kraptor is right about
it never happening with TwinView. Then if I have time I'll try his
suggested work-around.

[Bug 164586] Re: "Open" button in Import Folder in Rhythmbox does nothing if pressed immediately in certain folders

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have upgraded Rhythmbox to the Hardy version and tried what you
described, but you seem to be mistaken. Rhythmbox _does_ support re-
importing the same directory. If you import a directory and then later
put a new music file there and re-import the directory, then the file is
correctly added to your music library. The bug though, as I describe in
my report, is that if you press Open immediately (i.e., the dialog comes
up in the very directory that you want to import), then (for some
directories) the button doesn't do anything and the dialog stays open.

No matter what the right design for the app is, leaving the dialog up
without even showing an error message is definitely a bug.

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz + Clearlooks => Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-16 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
FYI, this happens way more often to me with the Human theme than with
either Clearlooks or Glossy. On the latter two, mousing over the title
bar buttons causes the bug maybe once out of every 10-20 times (compared
to 1-2 for Human).

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz + Clearlooks => Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Interesting news. It turns out that this is not only on Clearlooks after
all; I have now observed it on the Mist theme, which has its own engine.
The frequency of the bug on Mist also seems to vary. Some times it can
go for ages without the bug happening at all. Other times it will happen
just as much as on Human. It also somehow seems to be dependent on the
app somehow, because right now it is happening constantly for Firefox
but not at all for any of the other maximized windows.

** Summary changed:

- Compiz + Clearlooks => Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear
upon various title bar events
+ Compiz: Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various
title bar events

** Description changed:

  Original description:

"The title bar on any window seems to disappear every 7 times something
on the title bar is updated. I can cause the problem to occur by
changing tabs in firefox 7 times to update the text, or by moving the
mouse back and forth over the "X" button in order to cause it to become
a lighter shade momentarily. It happens after exactly 7 updates, no
matter what. When the title bar disappears it takes the text with it.
Usually the icon stays though, however I've seen it occasionally cut off
part of the icon as well.

I'm running gutsy, with compiz set to "Normal" in the "Visual Effects"
tab. I have an nvidia card and am using the nvidia-glx-new driver."

  Updated:

- This has since been found to occur only on maximized windows and only
- when both compiz and clearlooks are in use. Also, the precise frequency
- with which this occurs seems to differs among users. See comments.

else. Going to try Crux next.

[Bug 152493] Re: Compiz: Title bars on maximized windows frequently disappear upon various title bar events

2008-02-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I have now seen this on Crux, High Contrast Inverse, and High Contrast
Large Print Inverse. That's all of the default Ubuntu themes now, so I
think it's pretty clear: this is not theme- or engine-dependent. But
some themes trigger it more often than others. I'm going to leave it
open on ubuntulooks though since it definitely does affect that way
more. The ubuntulooks people can mark it Invalid if they want.

Another interesting note: on Crux, which has fairly noticeable window
borders, the borders are affected by this bug too. That is, when the
title bar disappears, so do the borders.

[Bug 192797] [NEW] Changing themes with Firefox open makes it temporarily use 100% CPU

2008-02-17 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Just like the title says.

I have an up-to-date i686 gutsy install on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop (with
some packages installed from hardy though, but none related to this). If
I have Firefox open and I change themes in
System->Preference->Appearance->Theme, Firefox becomes unresponsive and
uses 100% CPU for about 20 seconds or so, after which it recovers. This
is a very long time to be unresponsive. Many users will kill it before
that. And changing themes can't possibly require useful work that would
need 100% CPU for 20 seconds.

[Bug 172718] Re: Compiz + NVIDIA TwinView => bottom of maximized windows on primary monitor cut off if taskbar too large

2008-02-18 Thread Tristan Schmelcher
I'm not sure if I can help you there: I tried installing the latest
Hardy versions of the compiz packages a couple days ago, but compiz kept
segfaulting on startup for me (which I have filed as bug 192545). If and
when that is fixed, I'll let you know whether or not this bug persists
in the current Hardy version. If I recall correctly though, I was using
a previous set of Hardy compiz packages before that and the bug did
persist in those.

Not sure if I should change this back to New or leave as Incomplete.
I'll let you decide.
