[Bug 1859997] [NEW] Hangs on boot

2020-01-16 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

When I choose to boot Ubuntu with the "5.0.0-37-generic" kernel, it just
hangs. I try to use recovery mode, but it does not help. However, I get
some output from the kernel, but no error messages. See attached photo
of the screen.

To boot, I need to choose the 5.0.0-36-generic kernel.

[Bug 1652644] Re: Switching users in Ubuntu/Ubuntu Gnome freezes graphics

2017-01-03 Thread Vidar Hoel
I have now tested the new kernel for two days, and unfortunately, after
several user switches I got a blank screen again :-( However, the kernel
does not output any errors. So it seems this bug is not kernel related.

Here is a log from lightdm, which is the only log I could find with an error:

(Last three lines pops up when I tried to switch user and the bug
appeared).

I assume this is an X/lightdm bug?

[Bug 1652644] [NEW] Switching users in Ubuntu/Ubuntu Gnome freezes graphics

2016-12-26 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

This bug was present in Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 LTS with GDM, but did a clean
install of Ubutnu 16.04 LTS with Unity and LightDM, and the bug is still
present.

How to reproduce:
1. Boot the system, wait for LightDM to start and show the Ubuntu Unity greeter.
2. Log in as a user.
3. From the power menu (top right), choose an other user
4. In the password-promt (greeter) for the user, type in the correct password

At this point, one of three thing might happen:
a- The desktop, desktop icons, Unity-launcher and main menu for the user is
loaded. The user can use the system as expected!
b- The desktop, desktop icons and Unity-launcher the user is loaded. However,
just before the main-menu-bar at the tops loads, the the graphics freezes. I
can move the cursor, but that's it. It is not possible to click or do anything
with the mouse-cursor.
c- Same as (b), but during this process the screen goes complete blank (black),
with only the cursor showing (and moving).

When (b) or (c), pressing ALT+F1-F6 does not help, the screen just stays
the same (except the cursor dispersers). Pressing ALT+F7 afterwards does
not bring the cursor back.

The system has not frozen. I can SSH to the box and it lives as nothing
has happened. It's only effecting the display/graphics.

This bug happens about 1/3 of the times I switch the user. Sometimes I
can switch to and from users several times (2-5) before this bug comes
to life.

[Bug 1565115] Re: package libpython3.5-minimal:amd64 3.5.1-10 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

2016-06-04 Thread Vidar Hoel
This bug affected my too, but I was able to solve it.

Short answer:
dh-python is dependent on python3, python3 is dependent on dh-python. Solve it
by running:
sudo dpkg --force-configure-any --configure dh-python

Long answer:
I did a do-release-upgrade on my Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 to 16.04, but it failed a
gconf2, with the massage it was dependent on python3.5, but it was not
configured, and I was unable to configure it. However, I started with:
sudo dpkg --configure python3 -> Didn't work because it was dependent on
python3.5, so I did a
sudo dpkg --configure python3.5 -> Didn't work because it was dependent on (see
next line), so I did a
sudo dpkg --configure libpython3.5-stdlib
sudo dpkg --configure python3.5
sudo dpkg --configure python3
sudo dpkg --configure libpython3-stdlib
and then I ran:
sudo dpkg --configure python3 --> Which did not work, becasue it was dependent
on dh-python, so I ran
udo dpkg --configure dh-python --> Which did not work either, because it was
dependent on python3.

I was able to get past this by running:
sudo dpkg --force-configure-any --configure dh-python

And now everything seems to work.

[Bug 1344762] [NEW] update-notifier tells me to upgrade from 12.04.4 LTS to 14.04 LTS (because of HWE), but that release is not found

2014-07-19 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

I logged into my server, I was greeted with this message:

Your current Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is going out of support
on 08/07/14. After this date security updates for critical parts (kernel
and graphics stack) of your system will no longer be available.

For more information, please see:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL

To upgrade to a supported (or longer supported) configuration:

* Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS by running:
sudo do-release-upgrade

OR

* Install a newer HWE version by running:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

and reboot your system.

Now, that is no problem, so I ran:
  % sudo do-release-upgrade
and got this message:

[Bug 836533] Re: Still problems with nfs-mounts in /etc/fstab on boot

2012-06-30 Thread Vidar Hoel
I had the same bug, and found the problem: Running IPv6 first and IPv4
afterwards (in /etc/networking/interfaces) did not work. When I
prioritezed IPv6, I had to do a sudo mount -a before logging in.

And there it just hangs.

I do not have any invalid mounts, but I do have two directories mounted via
NFS: /mnt/public (music and videos) and /home
I am trying to run mount and after three minutes this is all the commando has
given in output:

sitron@zero:~$ mount
/dev/sda2 on / type ext4 (rw,errors=remount-ro,commit=0)

I am still waiting! And since I mount /home via NFS, this system is
painfully slow, response-times are huge!

[Bug 811281] Re: ath9k driver randomly disconnects and can only reconnect by reloading the module

2011-09-09 Thread Vidar Hoel
I try to start WiFi with WPA2 from /etc/network/interfaces. Most of the
times I boot it, it will not connect to the AP, and the iwlist wlan1
scanning does not list the AP half of the time.

Reloading the module does not help.

However, the few times I boot the computer and it does connect,
everything works all of the time, with excellent quality.

All other equipment, computers, smartphones both lists and connects to
the AP without any problem.

[Bug 768263] [NEW] Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 won't boot (blank screen)

2011-04-21 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

I made a bootable USB stick from the Ubuntu 11.04 beta 2 desktop-iso (AMD64).
When I boot it on my Lenovo U350, it imitatively crashes. The screen is almost
blank, but there are some unreadble text on the screen. The font is about
5x10cm on my 13 screen.
It has clearly crashed.

This happens in under 1 sec after the USB-stick is first read. After
this crash nothing happens, the USB-stick is not read. And after 10 sec,
the laptop reboots.

I have tried this stick in other machines, there it works perfectly.

(As you see, I already have have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on this
computer, but I want to do a fresh install of 11.04 Beta 2.)

[Bug 665738] [NEW] NFS4: exports options are ignored for subdirs

2010-10-23 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

I am trying to set up a new NFS4 server, but it seems like the server respects
options which are defined for the export _root_ directory (fsid=0), ignores
deviating options that are specified for any of the exported subdirectories
(i.e., the settings for the
root dir are used instead).

Example:

I followed the instructions on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo and made this
example /etc/exports on the server:

/opt/exports/test
192.168.10.14/32(rw,fsid=0,insecure,no_subtree_check)
/opt/exports/test/dir1
192.168.10.14/32(rw,root_squash,insecure,no_subtree_check,async)
/opt/exports/test/dir2
192.168.10.14/32(rw,no_root_squash,insecure,no_subtree_check,async)

I mount it on the client (192.168.10.14):

# mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp nfsserver:/ test/
# mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp nfsserver:/dir1 dir1/
# mount -t nfs4 -o proto=tcp nfsserver:/dir2 dir2/

root should be able to write to test/dir2 and dir2, but:

# touch test/x test/dir1/x test/dir2/x dir1/x dir2/x
touch: cannot touch `test/x': Permission denied
touch: cannot touch `test/dir1/x': Permission denied
touch: cannot touch `test/dir2/x': Permission denied
touch: cannot touch `dir1/x': Permission denied
touch: cannot touch `dir2/x': Permission denied

If I, however, change /etc/exports on the server to:

/opt/exports/test
192.168.10.14/32(rw,fsid=0,no_root_squash,insecure,no_subtree_check)
/opt/exports/test/dir1
192.168.10.14/32(rw,root_squash,insecure,no_subtree_check,async)
/opt/exports/test/dir2
192.168.10.14/32(rw,no_root_squash,insecure,no_subtree_check,async)

and umount the dirs on the client, run exportfs -ra (or reboot or
restart of nfs-kernel-server) and then mount the same dirs as before, I
should be able to write to test, test/dir2 and dir2. However:

# touch test/x test/dir1/x test/dir2/x dir1/x dir2/x
#

The server does not respect the options for the subdirs.

[Bug 567913] [NEW] No audio in wmv-files: Cannot find codec for audio format 0x161

2010-04-21 Thread Vidar Hoel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ffmpeg

sit...@zero:/tmp$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.10
Release:9.10

sit...@zero:/tmp$ uname -a
Linux zero 2.6.31-20-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Mar 12 04:38:19 UTC 2010 x86_64
GNU/Linux

I had the following packages installed:
ii libavcodec52
4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2
ii libavformat52
4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2

I could stream mms://mms-icanal-odc.online.no/norsk-
ripub/autodistribusjon/Himmelbl__11_04_10_600_627669_20100411_200800.wmv
and watch
http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/WMA2/nintendothemesacappellax.wmv;
without problems and with sound.

Mplayer said:
==

AUDIO: 48000 Hz, 2 ch, s16le, 96.0 kbit/6.25% (ratio: 12000-192000)
Selected audio codec: [ffwmav2] afm: ffmpeg (DivX audio v2 (FFmpeg))
==

I did a sudo apt-get upgrade and got the new files:
ii libavformat52
4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2.1
ii libavcodec52
4:0.5+svn20090706-2ubuntu2.1

Using the same two files mplayer will not play the sound:

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2009-11-19 Thread Vidar Hoel
Here is my lspci -vvnn after I resolved my issue with step 2. The
wireless network went from dropping connection randomly, but often,
under load (pre step 2) to working without problems (post step 2).

[Bug 461419] Re: [Karmic] Atheros AR5211 - ath5k driver connection and performance issues

2009-11-18 Thread Vidar Hoel
I did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 (i386) on my IBM ThinkPad T42.
Wireless (WPA2 PSK) did work, but the connection dropped randomly under
load (Reconnected to my AP at least one time pr 2 minutes).

Did step 2, rebooted, and it now works. I have downloaded gigabytes of
data and the connection has not dropped once!

So: Step 2 was a bug-fixer for me!
