[Bug 723275] [NEW] Empathy uses the disk too often
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: empathy Summary This one makes little sense to me and I have no idea how to debug. The problem is that no matter what I do, send a message on AIM, or resize the list of chatters in an IRC room; Empathy noisily writes to the hard disk while I am doing this action, but only while I do it. It just seems to be a needless amount of wear and tear on the hard disk How to reproduce *** Join a chat room on IRC. Resize the side pane that shows the list of folks in the room, the disk noisily writes constantly while you move the pane. It ceases immediately when you stop resizing the pane. [Bug 703098] [NEW] Maverick Wine 1.0 Audio Unable To De-select OSS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: wine1.0 Summary Using the Wine1.0 package in Maverick works as expected except that in Configure Wine control panel I am able to disable the OSS driver. Playing any game or program the sound dies out right away. The corresponding Wine registry key states my driver is Alsa. [Bug 680022] [NEW] 100hz causes Xorg to stutter in some circumstances
Public bug reported: I am using the amd64 version of Ubuntu using the generic kernel. I have an Intel Series 4 mobile chip. I notice that under some circumstances, namely logging in and starting up a program using wine, my mouse movement begins to slow as well as any window drawing. It makes the interface hard to interact with though it clears up the moment the desktop is fully logged in or the wine program fully loads. This only happens when they are starting up. I have found if I use the preempt kernel, or custom compile a kernel with a higher hz such as 300 or 1000, this does not occur (at least so much less it is hardly noticeable). I did a test compiling a kernel with 1000hz and no preemption at all and this did not occur, so it has nothing to do with voluntary preemption. I will test a kernel from the mainline ppa soon; though I assume the results will be the same. [Bug 668484] [NEW] Unity Dock popup sometimes will not auto fade
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: unity On Maverick using Unity, when you mouse-over an item on the dock, it has a popup arrow widget saying (for example) Firefox Web Browser. This is the log, did not alter any configuration and installed the audio-dev ppa. Ran a few tests using the sound server (started with pulseaudio --log-target=syslog -). Volume scales from near silence to full volume low in the pulse mixer Lucid With Alsa Backport Package: 1. Now sound is louder 2. Mixer works with pulse 3. Critical problem with headphones/speakers. Pulse immediately mutes them when plugged in. Manually playing with alsamixer will unmute the channel, however the pulse mixer seems to override it. Lucid With Alsa Backport, Pulse Removed: 1. This is what I currently use, to get the louder sound AND external speakers. I tried OSS4, however it was not to be so I am using just alsa. 2. Downside is no volume key support without a PPA. I use Gnome Alsamixer or the terminal to change volume. As I stated the best option seems to be to use Alsa Backports with pulse removed. I should note that this is FIXED in Pulse in Maverick, however you need to disable glitch free (tsched=0) or the sound stutters terribly. -- [VIA VT1828S] Volume level scaling problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608819 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 378561] Re: [needs-packaging] vbam
I believe this needs packaged because: Problems with Visualboy Advance in the Ubuntu repository: - Program runs with lesser performance. - Has a critical issue where GB games run too fast and GBA games too slow. - Is not being actively developed. - It has less features. VBA-M adds fixes all of these issues and includes both a GTK graphical interface and an SDL command line Interface. I have tested the program myself and can confirm it runs without any show stopping issues on Lucid and Maverick. More testing and review may be needed I suppose, though in it's current state it has far more functionality than VisualboyAdvance, which hardly gets off the ground. -- [needs-packaging] vbam https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378561 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: visualboyadvance Ubuntu 10.04 - 64-bit. I have not tested on 32-bit. Using the VisualboyAdvance package 1.8.0-5. When playing a Gameboy ROM on VBA, the speed is far above 100%, and stays up at around 200-300%. If I throttle it to 100%, the sound and gameplay stutter and are jerky. I get poor performance on Gameboy Advance Roms. What I expected: Games to stay around 100%, with smooth frame-rate, as my system should be sufficiently powerful. [Bug 621430] [NEW] [VIA VT1708S] Playback problem Sound Skipping
Public bug reported: I am using the kernel backport from Maverick to Lucid. The summary of this problem is that at seemingly random times the sound skips almost like it does not have sufficient hardware to play it, which also results in totem and flash video skipping. It corrects itself, however does happen again at random times. I took debug information for this report after such an occurrence. Symptoms: 1.) The sound card pops and crackles during log in, and the log-in noise is delayed. 2.) After login the sound functions normally and seems to have good latency. 3.) At random times the sound skips, and takes video playback with it, however it does sort itself out. Steps to recreate: None, I am assuming anyone with this sound card would have this issue. My hardware is a stock Asus k50ij laptop. Notes: Fedora 13 has a lot of problems with volume and playback with this chipset, it seems Ubuntu does not. I also plan to do upstream testing on a mainline kernel, though I have not done so yet. [Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid
Alvils Berzins, perhaps try setting the swappiness parameter to vm.swappiness=100 on machines with low ram. I find this makes things much smoother. To do so: 1. Open this text file as root: /etc/sysctl.conf 2. Append this to the end: vm.swappiness=100 3. [Bug 575159] Re: Rhythmbox eats a HUGE amount of memory on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (even if no music is running)
Some of the plugins for Rhythmbox, such as Jamendo, actually store a database in RAM, and tend to get quite memory hungry. [Bug 516834] Re: bad default swappiness for desktop systems
I did a little digging into this issue because performance on lower end machines interests me personally. I plan on getting the numbers when I can figure out how, for now I did my own testing. I actually prefer to use a value of 'vm.swappiness=100' on lower memory machines. My reasoning is that the system is going to go into swapping regardless on say 384mb of ram (the lowest I get a usable desktop on the default install). So getting less used memory already into swap can improve performance for when it is needed for a more active application. As for testing, the goal is to get Firefox up as fast as possible. With vm.swappiness=10, the system boots and is able to log in, though attempting to start Firefox brings the system to a halt as it swaps pages back and forth. Attempting to multi-task only slows things down more. With vm.swappiness=100, after login the system has some disk I/O while idle at the desktop, but responsiveness is not hurt much. Starting Firefox actually brings it up in around 10 seconds, and I am also able to bring up the Gnome System Monitor to view process information as well. To reproduce these results for yourself (even on a powerful machine) you can simulate out-of-memory pressure simply by passing a temporary (reverts to default after reboot) boot parameter to the system. To test: 1. Hold shift while booting, wait until grub loads. Highlight the designated kernel to boot, and press E. Go down to the line that starts with Linux and press END 2. Append a space, followed by: mem=384m 3. (NOTE) This command will tell the kernel to ignore all but that amount of RAM. You can change the above value to anything you wish, such as mem=256m 4. Boot into the system and test your current swappiness by trying to load Firefox. The benchmark is only meaningful if the machine is under memory pressure, so lower the value of the boot parameter if the system does not seem sluggish. 5. Try another value (such as vm.swappiness=100), reboot and start again at step 1. As I said, I plan on getting the numbers, and am currently working out a way to do so. I should make my position clear I desire no change unless performance gains are drastic. The default value of 60 is sufficient as far as I see. It seems to me that setting the value to vm.swappiness=100 has few downsides on a system with quite sufficient ram as well. Using the option on a machine with 3gb does not make it use swap at all. -- bad default swappiness for desktop systems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/516834 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
