[Bug 743323] Re: vlc memory leak

2011-04-24 Thread Virgil Brummond
I have had vlc running on Debian 6 for days on end and have not had this
issue; but I have encountered it on Ubuntu 10.10. Perhaps Ubuntu patches
are causing this?

Also, you can reset swap with: sudo swapoff -a sudo swapon -a

[Bug 723275] [NEW] Empathy uses the disk too often

2011-02-22 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Summary

This one makes little sense to me and I have no idea how to debug. The problem
is that no matter what I do, send a message on AIM, or resize the list of
chatters in an IRC room; Empathy noisily writes to the hard disk while I am
doing this action, but only while I do it. It just seems to be a needless
amount of wear and tear on the hard disk

How to reproduce
***
Join a chat room on IRC. Resize the side pane that shows the list of folks in
the room, the disk noisily writes constantly while you move the pane. It ceases
immediately when you stop resizing the pane. You can also send a message to
someone on AIM (not sure about other clients). Every message you send you can
hear the disk clicking for a second, to the point it even gets distracting
after a while.

[Bug 713505] [NEW] Installing package stalls while writing to USB

2011-02-04 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dpkg

Summary

When trying to install a package while doing a large write to a usb flash drive
apt/synaptic/dpkg is unable to unpack the debian package, and stall forever
(until the write to the USB is finished)

Steps To Trigger Bug
***
1. Start to install an Ubuntu Desktop ISO using USB Creator or Unetbootin
2. Try to apt-get install a package
3. Notice the package manager sits idle on unpacking until Unetbootin/Creator
finishes

Variables I Have Tested
**
I tested using both CFQ and Deadline IO Schedulers and this bug remains on both.
I have tested using Con Kolivas BFS scheduler and this issue remains.
I believe this bug both occurs on Lucid and Maverick, doing the above steps to
trigger bug, it is easy for anyone to test on their current install or say
something like Natty.

Using Ubuntu 10.04, unable to test on latest devel at the moment, will
report back if I can, but it is easy for any one to test.

I can confirm this. Transmission QT uses less than 1% of my cpu while running

The GTK version uses over 13 and generally is very slow to scroll, switching to

[Bug 703098] [NEW] Maverick Wine 1.0 Audio Unable To De-select OSS

2011-01-14 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine1.0

Summary

Using the Wine1.0 package in Maverick works as expected except that in
Configure Wine control panel I am able to disable the OSS driver.
Technically I can disable it, however if I load the panel again, it is
automatically enabled. Selecting Test Sound plays a sound however it
locks up the Configure Wine window. Playing any game or program the
sound dies out right away. The corresponding Wine registry key states my
driver is Alsa. This bug is critical to me because Wine 1.0 is almost
required when using Intel graphics, as 2d acceleration is unusable in
Wine1.2 and above. (Though that is certainly a separate matter). It also
should be noted this bug is not in the Maverick Wine1.2 package.

What I Expected To Happen
***

Wine allows me to select only one driver, and disable OSS in the control
panel. In programs sound works as it did in Wine1.0 in the Lucid
package.

What Happened Instead
***

Wine is unable to play sounds and unable to deselect OSS in the
Configure Wine Control Panel.

[Bug 686821] [NEW] Pidgin crashes Unity Netbook when closing a tab

2010-12-07 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mutter

Summary:
-
When I log into Unity, the first program I launch is Pidgin. I use it for IRC,
so I get a message stating I have been logged in in the form of a normal chat.
I close the tab that informs me that I have received a message and Unity
crashes and restarts. (I am not logged out though, it just blanks out for a
second).

Steps To Reproduce:
---
1, Log into Ubuntu Netbook
2. Start Pidgin
3, Log into Freenode on IRC, and get a PM from the bots
4. Close one of the two message tabs
5. Unity crashes and restarts.

[Bug 680022] [NEW] 100hz causes Xorg to stutter in some circumstances

2010-11-22 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

I am using the amd64 version of Ubuntu using the generic kernel. I have
an Intel Series 4 mobile chip. I notice that under some circumstances,
namely logging in and starting up a program using wine, my mouse
movement begins to slow as well as any window drawing. It makes the
interface hard to interact with though it clears up the moment the
desktop is fully logged in or the wine program fully loads. This only
happens when they are starting up.

I have found if I use the preempt kernel, or custom compile a kernel
with a higher hz such as 300 or 1000, this does not occur (at least so
much less it is hardly noticeable). I did a test compiling a kernel with
1000hz and no preemption at all and this did not occur, so it has
nothing to do with voluntary preemption.

I will test a kernel from the mainline ppa soon; though I assume the
results will be the same.

[Bug 668484] [NEW] Unity Dock popup sometimes will not auto fade

2010-10-29 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

On Maverick using Unity, when you mouse-over an item on the dock, it has
a popup arrow widget saying (for example) Firefox Web Browser. Usually
on mouse off, the popup will disappear. Sometimes (can not seem to lock
down exactly why, but it is common) the pop-up will not go away, and I
have to mouse over it again to get it to vanish. I am assuming the
correct behavior is for the popup to vanish when the mouse leaves it.

[Bug 621430] Re: [VIA VT1708S] Playback problem Sound Skipping

2010-10-20 Thread Virgil Brummond
This is the log, did not alter any configuration and installed the
audio-dev ppa. Ran a few tests using the sound server (started with
pulseaudio --log-target=syslog -). This includes playing music with
rhythmbox and using the media keys on my laptop. Pulse died once during
this process and had to be started again. The media keys do not work,
they seem to be recognized but do not change the volume by any
noticeable amount. The buzzing sound on pulse spawn is not there anymore
so that was fixed.

Log file attached.

[Bug 661652] [NEW] Totem poor video quality with deinterlacing

2010-10-16 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Using totem video player in Maverick, by default I noticed videos have a
bad or blurry video quality. When I disabled deinterlacing and started
the program again, video quality was vastly improved. I think
deinterlacing should be disabled by default. This happens on both video
files and DVDs.

What I expected: Clear video files as before.
What happened instead: A blurry grainy video quality.

Works great otherwise. :)

Anyone who is having problems with the audio making your system unusable
for now enable glitch free temporarily (at least until this issue is
resolved). To do so:

1. Press alt+f2 type: gksudo gedit /etc/pulse/default.pa
2. Find the line that says load-module module-udev-detect
3. Change that line to: load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
4. Save and exit gedit.
5. Reboot. (Just logging out or back in or even restarting pulseaudio might
work)

[Bug 659802] [NEW] googleearth-package Maverick Unrecognized Google Earth version

[Bug 655012] [NEW] Webkit-Gtk slow performance on some sites

2010-10-05 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

On sites such as http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/ and
http://www.ubuntugamer.com/ Webkit-GTK is very slow. It must have
something to do with their layout, as both use something similar. It

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2010-10-05 Thread Virgil Brummond
This sounds like something hard to lock down. I did a bit of testing
using audio as the main issue. Using the generic kernel, audio would
stutter when the system went into swap and had any cpu load. The server
kernel allows audio to play solid, and generally things seem responsive.

Yes it is fixed in 0.10.5. I tried from the Stellarium PPA on Lucid.

[Bug 608819] Re: [VIA VT1828S] Volume level scaling problem

2010-09-27 Thread Virgil Brummond
Note: I have a similar chip (I think they are similar): VIA VT1708S.
Here are the symptoms. (I am using Lucid)

Stock Lucid:
1, Sound is quiet, but it is tolerable
2. Volume scales from near silence to full volume low in the pulse mixer

Lucid With Alsa Backport Package:
1. Now sound is louder
2. Mixer works with pulse
3. Critical problem with headphones/speakers. Pulse immediately mutes them when
plugged in. Manually playing with alsamixer will unmute the channel, however
the pulse mixer seems to override it.

Lucid With Alsa Backport, Pulse Removed:
1. This is what I currently use, to get the louder sound AND external speakers.
I tried OSS4, however it was not to be so I am using just alsa.
2. Downside is no volume key support without a PPA. I use Gnome Alsamixer or
the terminal to change volume.

As I stated the best option seems to be to use Alsa Backports with pulse
removed. I should note that this is FIXED in Pulse in Maverick, however you
need to disable glitch free (tsched=0) or the sound stutters terribly.

[Bug 646564] [NEW] Intel Driver: Mouse cursor stutters while logging and and starting Wine

2010-09-23 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I am using Lucid on my laptop with a Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated
Graphics Controller, and the default Intel 2.9 driver included. During
some events, such as logging in and starting a Wine app. The mouse
cursor becomes unable to move well and some programs seem to not
respond, such as Nautilus. As soon as the action finishes (app loads,
desktop appears, etc) the slowness stops, so it is not show stopper.
Increasing Nice of Xorg seems to make the problem worse, so it must be
related to that process.

This problem does not occur using Lucid on a machine with a Nvidia card.

[Bug 644766] [NEW] Virtualbox-OSE Spawns Multiple Sessions

2010-09-21 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

Using the package in Ubuntu Maverick (Now in Beta).

When I choose to start a VM, it spawns two sessions instead of one,
however one session is blank. The other seems to work normally. I notice
no other symptoms.

[Bug 378561] Re: [needs-packaging] vbam

2010-09-20 Thread Virgil Brummond
I believe this needs packaged because:

Problems with Visualboy Advance in the Ubuntu repository:

- Program runs with lesser performance.
- Has a critical issue where GB games run too fast and GBA games too slow.
- Is not being actively developed.
- It has less features.

VBA-M adds fixes all of these issues and includes both a GTK graphical
interface and an SDL command line Interface. I have tested the program
myself and can confirm it runs without any show stopping issues on Lucid
and Maverick. More testing and review may be needed I suppose, though in
it's current state it has far more functionality than VisualboyAdvance,
which hardly gets off the ground.

I found a solution. It is the glitch free audio again. If I append
tsched=0 to the line: load-module module-udev-detect in
/etc/pulse/default.pa the audio/video work correctly. Here are some logs
that may be relevant.

2. Click install or more info on the top result
3. It returns to main screen, forcing me to search again.

[Bug 628654] [NEW] Battery Information Shows Up Twice

2010-09-02 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Using Ubuntu Maverick installed from a daily image after alpha 3. Gnome
power manager is 2.31.90-0ubuntu5.

Pulling up the menu that shows power information should show my AC and
Battery. Instead I get the same information listed twice about the same
interfaces. I only have one battery.

Screenshot included.

everything.

[Bug 622103] [NEW] Visualboy Advance Speed Over 100% (Too fast)

2010-08-22 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: visualboyadvance

Ubuntu 10.04 - 64-bit. I have not tested on 32-bit. Using the
VisualboyAdvance package 1.8.0-5.

When playing a Gameboy ROM on VBA, the speed is far above 100%, and
stays up at around 200-300%. If I throttle it to 100%, the sound and
gameplay stutter and are jerky. I get poor performance on Gameboy
Advance Roms.

What I expected:
Games to stay around 100%, with smooth frame-rate, as my system should be
sufficiently powerful. (Intel 2.2ghz Dual Core, 3gb RAM)

What happens instead:
Roms are either too fast, and have stuttered playback, or perform poorly.

[Bug 621430] [NEW] [VIA VT1708S] Playback problem Sound Skipping

2010-08-20 Thread Virgil Brummond
Public bug reported:

I am using the kernel backport from Maverick to Lucid. The summary of
this problem is that at seemingly random times the sound skips almost
like it does not have sufficient hardware to play it, which also results
in totem and flash video skipping. It corrects itself, however does
happen again at random times. I took debug information for this report
after such an occurrence.

Symptoms:
1.) The sound card pops and crackles during log in, and the log-in noise is
delayed.
2.) After login the sound functions normally and seems to have good latency.
3.) At random times the sound skips, and takes video playback with it, however
it does sort itself out.

Steps to recreate:
None, I am assuming anyone with this sound card would have this issue. My
hardware is a stock Asus k50ij laptop.

Notes:
Fedora 13 has a lot of problems with volume and playback with this chipset, it
seems Ubuntu does not. I also plan to do upstream testing on a mainline kernel,
though I have not done so yet.

[Bug 608064] Re: No sound in games under Wine if used PulseAudio

2010-08-15 Thread Virgil Brummond
Edit, posted early in error: (Note case sensitive when using regedit,
please type exact)

This should let Wine have direct HW access to prevent buffer underruns,
the only disadvantage is that some apps do not have access to the sound
card while Wine is running. Sometimes this option works best combined
with OSS.

Contingency is this does not help is simply to delete the UseDIrectHW
key.

1. Press alt+f2 and type: regedit
2. This is the wine registry editor, navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software
- Wine
3. Right click on Wine, and select New - Key. Name the new key: Alsa Driver
4. Select Alsa Driver and right click in the white space to the right. Select
New - String Value, name the value: UseDirectHW
5. Double click UseDirectHW, and make the value: y
6. Hit ok, and close all wine apps.

[Bug 608110] Re: Gnash can't playback YouTube videos

2010-08-08 Thread Virgil Brummond
Also the solution detailed here (might also be listed on the links
above):
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Common_F13_bugs#Gnash_fails_to_play_youtube_videos

The GNU flash movie player (gnash) fails to play youtube videos (with
necessary codecs installed) after the first youtube visit with the
message : An error occured, please try again later. inside the player.
The problem appears to be due to mishandling of browser cookies. To
workaround the issue, delete youtube cookies, then block cookies from
youtube.

The procedure to remove cookies and block youtube.com cookies using
firefox is listed below.

1. Open firefox preferences by selecting Edit → Preferences from the firefox
menu
I2. n the preferences window, choose the Privacy tab
3. Under History, set the value of Firefox will to Use custom settings for
history
4. Next, remove any youtube cookies by selecting Show Cookies. Enter youtube in
the search box, and click Remove Cookies. Close the Cookies dialog when
finished.
5. Next, add an exception by selecting Exceptions and add
http://www.youtube.com then select Block
6. Finally, close the firefox preferences dialog.

[Bug 542343] Re: gnome-panel will not autostart on lucid

2010-07-28 Thread Virgil Brummond
Alvils Berzins, perhaps try setting the swappiness parameter to
vm.swappiness=100 on machines with low ram. I find this makes things
much smoother.

To do so:

1. Open this text file as root: /etc/sysctl.conf
2. Append this to the end: vm.swappiness=100
3. Reboot.

[Bug 516834] Re: bad default swappiness for desktop systems

2010-07-26 Thread Virgil Brummond
I did a little digging into this issue because performance on lower end
machines interests me personally. I plan on getting the numbers when I
can figure out how, for now I did my own testing. I actually prefer to
use a value of 'vm.swappiness=100' on lower memory machines. My
reasoning is that the system is going to go into swapping regardless on
say 384mb of ram (the lowest I get a usable desktop on the default
install). So getting less used memory already into swap can improve
performance for when it is needed for a more active application. As for
testing, the goal is to get Firefox up as fast as possible.

With vm.swappiness=10, the system boots and is able to log in, though
attempting to start Firefox brings the system to a halt as it swaps
pages back and forth. Attempting to multi-task only slows things down
more.

With vm.swappiness=100, after login the system has some disk I/O while
idle at the desktop, but responsiveness is not hurt much. Starting
Firefox actually brings it up in around 10 seconds, and I am also able
to bring up the Gnome System Monitor to view process information as
well.

To reproduce these results for yourself (even on a powerful machine) you
can simulate out-of-memory pressure simply by passing a temporary
(reverts to default after reboot) boot parameter to the system. To test:

1. Hold shift while booting, wait until grub loads. Highlight the designated
kernel to boot, and press E. Go down to the line that starts with Linux and
press END
2. Append a space, followed by: mem=384m
3. (NOTE) This command will tell the kernel to ignore all but that amount of
RAM. You can change the above value to anything you wish, such as mem=256m
4. Boot into the system and test your current swappiness by trying to load
Firefox. The benchmark is only meaningful if the machine is under memory
pressure, so lower the value of the boot parameter if the system does not seem
sluggish.
5. Try another value (such as vm.swappiness=100), reboot and start again at
step 1.

As I said, I plan on getting the numbers, and am currently working out a
way to do so. I should make my position clear I desire no change unless
performance gains are drastic. The default value of 60 is sufficient as
far as I see.

It seems to me that setting the value to vm.swappiness=100 has few
downsides on a system with quite sufficient ram as well. Using the
option on a machine with 3gb does not make it use swap at all.

[Bug 268267] Re: Explain the implications of suggested tweaks

I agree with the undo ability, though I believe most tweaks are not
permanent and revert on reboot. Also, I think it would be nice if we had

logs into improving power management. This would be good for open source
as a whole.

[Bug 561957] Re: Webcam image flipped - libv4l issue or kernel?

2010-07-06 Thread Virgil Brummond
I have the same exact hardware (Asus k50ij). I can confirm this issue.
Testing the mainline 2.6.34 kernel the webcam image was still flipped
incorrectly.

[Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled

2010-07-06 Thread Virgil Brummond
Did some powertop reports on battery with both the lucid kernel and the
mainline 2.6.34 kernel.

NOTE: This file contains both tests, the lucid kernel on top, and the
mainline kernel below.

[Bug 508733] Re: volume control app operates over ~25% of range

2010-07-02 Thread Virgil Brummond
This occurs for me on 10.04 using the same VIA VT1708S. The workaround
above works great for me.

Please note however that the upcoming alsa drivers (in maverick) may
have even worse issues. Using Fedora 13, I am unable to get sound from
plugging in any devices (speakers/headphones). You can also test this by
installing alsa backports on 10.04. I plan on filing a different bug if
alsa in maverick has this issue. (I am not testing maverick currently).

[Bug 508733] Re: volume control app operates over ~25% of range

2010-07-02 Thread Virgil Brummond
Update: The workaround above causes some issues with audio becoming
choppy. I have experienced this before with audio in wine, so it may be
a similar problem. (I am willing to bet using 1000hz and preemption
would fix this, but that is not exactly a solution).

[Bug 578015] Re: Epiphany Browser Downloads Applet Does Not Disappear

2010-07-01 Thread Virgil Brummond
I think this occurs with newer versions of packages from the ricotz
gnome shell PPA. So this bug is invalid for Ubuntu. (My mistake!)

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install Epiphany from standard repository.
2. Add ricotz gnome shell repository.
3. Run 'sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude safe-upgrade'
4. Install gnome-shell.
5. Start Epiphany while using Gnome Shell and download an image file from
Wikipedia.
6. Notice the dialog still assumes downloads are in progress and does not go
away.

[Bug 572599] Re: No Battery or Volume indicator in gnome-shell

2010-06-29 Thread Virgil Brummond
You can easily work around this in Lucid. Just remove the indicator-
applets, and as said above add gnome-volume-control-applet to start-up
applications. The log in and back out, the notification area will take
over like usual.

noticeably only when FF is open.

[Bug 591540] Re: Pitivi: When converting a video, the result has a black border, even if set to no border

2010-06-27 Thread Virgil Brummond
There is a workaround for this currently. Set the video settings right
when you open Pitivi, and THEN import the clips, edit and render. Works
fine here. Thanks to someone on the ubuntu forums for pointing that out.

[Bug 504645] Re: Brasero won't accept FLAC files for audio disc project

2010-06-16 Thread Virgil Brummond
I can confirm this. One FLAC file out of an entire album fails to import
for unknown reasons. They were all created from the same source the same
way. I could not find anything interesting in this debug log I made,
however perhaps someone else can.

[Bug 546338] Re: receiving messages containing a newline do not show with the ubuntu theme

2010-06-13 Thread Virgil Brummond
This bug occurs to me in Empathy version 2.30.1-0ubuntu1 on Lucid, I am
guessing the fix is in proposed? I can send large messages, but when I
receive one on MSN it will only show up in the notify-osd. It does not
show up in the chat window and trying to access the chat history
crashes. Also, I noticed sometimes a friends message will show up under
the box that contains my messages. I will test using another chat theme
to see if this occurs, then restart empathy and see if I can view chat
history.

with the gnome shell but this bug was present. I will see if I can
reproduce more accurately.
