[Bug 220119] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 RC + NVIDIA binary drivers = often crash/freeze

2008-06-30 Thread Wayne Moses Burke
I crashed three times within 20 minutes of booting this morning -
starting with the first just after login.

I then spent some time researching this issue and it seems to be related
to the NVidia hardware. I installed envyng-gtk from the Synaptic package
manager and ran EnvyNG from the Applications/System Tools menu. I was
able to reboot the computer without freezing up and am feeling
optimistic about my future with the Hardy Heron.

I will report back after a couple of days.

Phew! That was close!

I was being all arrogant in thinking that my issues had come to an
end... Reinstallation of the NVidia drivers by EnvyNG appears to have
helped little - it froze up completely again.

[Bug 220119] Re: Ubuntu 8.04 RC + NVIDIA binary drivers = often crash/freeze

2008-06-22 Thread Wayne Moses Burke
I attempted to run with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers shut off, but
still got crashes.

It is possible as beefcurry wrote that the crashes were less frequent,
but I can't swear to it. I haven't been able to discern a pattern in the
crashing, so I'm uncertain if there was a change in it.

Hopefully our renewed input will prompt an elevation of this issue. It
is damn irritating, as I'm sure you can all imagine.

Sorry I don't have more input, but I will continue to monitor this bug
report and let you know about any changes that I experience in the
status of the issue.

Thanks.

2008-06-20 Thread Wayne Moses Burke
I have been having this difficulty since 8.04 upgrade as well. I'm also
on an hp tc1100 tablet pc with 1.5 Gb ram.

I have been using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers. I just disabled them
and will post back if there is no success with that.

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been
able to figure out any way to reliably crash it, it will just suddenly
completely lock up - the only solution is turning off the power to the
computer and doing a full reboot.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-05-27 Thread Wayne Schuller
i've been playing around with hardy proposed and hardy backports
modules.

i've noticed that there are two different versions of the module (at
least).

using modinfo rt2500pci there seems to be a 2.0.10 version and a 2.1.5
version

the 2.0.10 version seems to work better for me.

I think 2.1.5 is the backports?

My advice: remove all backports, add hardy proposed as a repository in
Synaptic, and get the latest kernel.

[Bug 96875] Re: OpenOffice can not find JRE (sun 1.6)

2008-05-19 Thread Wayne Merry
I also noticed this subtle difference between x.03 and x.06, and this
too was preventing macros running in open office calc 2.4 under Ubuntu
8.04. I created a link in /usr/lib/jvm from java-6-sun-1.6.0.03 to
java-6-sun-1.6.0.06 using nautilus as root, and wella, everything works.
If open office is fixed to look in the wrong places - this would help.
Why can't it use the general java-6-sun link?

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-05-14 Thread Wayne Schuller
Some short comments:

- This is definitely a regression. In Gutsy (even Feisty!) there was a
reliable version of the driver. In Hardy there is a crappier version
related to the code that was merged into the main linux tree. I quote
from the front page rtx00 upstream web site:

rt2x00 enters mainline kernel - January 2008
Hi All,
two days ago, January 24th, Linux Kernel 2.6.24 was released. This is the first
mainline kernel that includes (sadly a somewhat buggy) rt2x00 release.

- It is more than just the rate issue. The code seems to have other
problems. I have very variable success with associating under the same
setup that worked perfectly under the hardy rt2500pci module.

- I have linux-backports-modules-2.6.24-16-generic installed. doesn't
help. Sometimes I get good performance, other times I can't even
associate.

What can be done to fix this? It kills/blocks/subverts networking on
this popular network hardware (rt2500) in Hardy.

[Bug 190515] Re: [Hardy] Low bandwidth with rt2400 / rt2500 drivers

2008-05-14 Thread Wayne Schuller
my second dot point I should have said gutsy instead of hardy.

My point is gutsy had a better rt2500pci than hardy, all because of the
chronological accident of hardy locking in on a kernel version that had
a temporarily bad merge of the rt2x00 tree.

The permanent solution I found was to add the nut user to the nut group.
Apparently the package install script does not do that. It probably

[Bug 218374] Re: LCD g15 driver is not compiled

2008-04-21 Thread wayne Stallwood
Confirmed, this is also true in the upcoming Hardy release, even less
excuse there as the G15 tools are available as packages from the Hardy
repositories.

I think what is happening is that the package maintainer does not have
the G15 build dependencies satisfied as lcdproc will just skip any
driver libraries it can't build because of missing development packages.

With the missing G15.so file taken from a complete build of lcdproc,
everything works as expected.

Ok, scratch that.

By changing the boot parameters by adding vga=771 before the double

[Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed

2008-04-14 Thread Wayne Towe
Thanks for the quick reply Sebastien!

In my case the servers hosting the shares I have tried to connect to are
running MS Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

I have this same issue on three different computers all upgraded to
Hardy from Gutsy.

I didn't file a bug report sooner because I just figured it was
something that was in flux during alpha and beta, but since the final
release date is drawing near and it hasn't gotten any better I did some
research and found this bug report which matched the problem I was
experiencing.

[Bug 206439] Re: smb password protected share cannot be accessed

2008-04-13 Thread Wayne Towe
I have the same issue running Hardy 8.04 beta. I have had the problem
since Hardy Alpha. I upgraded from Gutsy.

I can access public SMB shares via Nautilus OK.

When trying to access a password protected share I get the error message
that says:

Can't display location smb://server/share/
The specified location is not mounted.

After I click OK to close the error message the share will show up in
Nautilus, but when I try to access it I get the error:

The folder contents could not be displayed.
You do not have permissions necessary to
view the contents of sharename on servername.

After this error occurs I will have two instances of the share showing
up in Nautilus, neither of which is accessible.

I am 100% certain I have proper permissions and my credentials are
entered correctly.

I can connect to the share via smbclient.

I had no problem connecting to shares when I was running gutsy.

[Bug 190048] [NEW] Powersave causes cups to disable my HP LJ 2300 usb printer

Public bug reported:

Whenever the computer goes into powersave mode, it comes back and the printer is

It sounds like Ubuntu launchpad bug 35638

The following workaround fixes this bug:

Install sysfsutils and add:
module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend = -1
to /etc/sysfs.conf.

[Bug 137818] Re: Compiz trouble with monitor geometry

2008-02-01 Thread Wayne Schuller
Albert's comment fixed it my Mac Mini problem with a single LCD monitor.

I have a new Intel Mac Mini with an Intel GMA 950 graphics card.
System-Administration-Screens and Graphics indicates Gutsy is using
the intel experimental modessing driver for the Intel 945.

It all seems to work okay except maximising the window didn't fill the
bottom 20% of the screen.

I unchecked Detect Outputs in the compiz settings, restarted compiz,
and then maximise worked properly again.

This bug made vlc/totem not play dvd's and other videos in full screen
correctly. Fixing it will help the transition of Mac mini owners. :)

[Bug 133723] Re: gnome-terminal locks up on unicode input

2007-08-20 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
here is the valgrind log mentioned in the bug description.

While logging, I let the gnome-terminal exhibiting the symptoms run for
approximately 1 minute after it locked up, hoping it would close or
finish on its own. After no such luck, I killed it, and the gnome-
terminal running valgrind was therefore killed as well.

[Bug 98813] Re: [apport] gnome-terminal crashed with SIGSEGV

2007-08-10 Thread Michael Wayne Goodman
I have been seeing the same symptoms. I was at first unable to
reproduce it reliably, but I found that button-mashing (like repeating
the home keys: asdf;lkj) while in unicode-input mode (scim) would
crash it quickly. Actually, it doesn't crash, it just locks up. I have
to then kill it manually (which kills all other instances of gnome-
terminal at the same time).

I tried to follow the valgrind wiki in order to produce this log, but if
I did something wrong please let me know. I'm not too skilled at
reporting this kind of bug yet, but I'm willing to learn.

Attached is my valgrind log.

also, please reopen this bug, as I need to use unicode from the command
line for my school project. I regularly use grep, sed, awk, etc. with
unicode, and these lock-ups are a pain

[Bug 115220] feisty fresh install fails to setup 1440x900 nvidia

2007-05-17 Thread Wayne Schuller
Public bug reported:

this is a fresh install of feisty

i'm a long time ubuntu user

the default was some squarish resolution

but i have a 1440x900 monitor

the bug is that option wasn't in the list under
System-Preferences-Screen Resolution

I did:
sudo vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

There are a whole bunch of entries with a 1440x1440 option! This is bad! Such
as:
SubSection Display
Depth 24
Modes 1440x1440 1280x1024 1024x768
 832x624 800x600 720x400 640x480
EndSubSection

I simply changed the second 1440 to 900, rebooted, and then I could
change the option in the preferences.

But it should have worked out of the box!

[Bug 104432] Re: Glipper makes copy/pasting of images in OpenOffice impossible

2007-04-21 Thread Wayne Davison
I have created a patch for glipper 0.95.1 that fixes this problem as
several others that I discovered. If anyone is interested, you can grab
it here:

http://opencoder.net/glipper-fixes.patch

It mentions all the fixes at the start of the patch. (I also reported
this to the glipper project on sourceforge.)

Note that my quick fix idea suggested in the previous entry was too
simple of a change to fix the problem. The patch file fixes this in a
much better way.

[Bug 104432] Re: Glipper makes copy/pasting of images in OpenOffice impossible

2007-04-21 Thread Wayne Davison
For those wanting to build the package, this command will install the
build-dependencies:

apt-get build-dep glipper

I added a change to the debian/changelog to the patch to make it
easier to build a new .deb package from the source (and the patch now
requires the -p1 option, not -p0). For instance:

wget http://opencoder.net/glipper-fixes.patch
apt-get source glipper
cd glipper-0.95.1
patch -p1 ../glipper-fixes.patch

[Bug 102965] Re: Accessing files on Edgy from Nokia 6233 via USB crashes system

2007-04-19 Thread Wayne Booth
I also have the same problem with my Nokia 6233 on Edgy.
The device is found and visible via USB.
However transferring files from the phones card onto the PC fails.
(sometimes I will get a partial file, or very rarely I'll get one file out of
n...)
Most time, I get a message telling me that its not a good idea to remove a
device without 'ejecting'., even though I did not remove the device. At this
point I have to remove and then re-connect the device in order to view files on
it.
Hope this help diagnose this problem.

[Bug 104432] Re: Glipper makes copy/pasting of images in OpenOffice impossible

2007-04-18 Thread Wayne Davison
This bug is caused by some incorrect logic when the checkClipboard()
function calls the processContent() function (both in src/main.c). If
the call to gtk_clipboard_wait_for_text() returned a NULL (because the
clipboard item could not be changed into plain text), the NULL gets
passed to processContent(), and that function resets the clipboard to
the last-known text item, obliterating all non-text clipboard items as
quickly as they are found.

I'll report this item upstream. In the meantime, if a quick fix is
desired, the processContent() function could be changed to ignore a NULL
newContent arg. That would cause Glipper to ignore all non-text items,
with the only downside being that the drop-down menu would show the
last-known plain-text item as being current even though no plain-text is
available to paste (but that's better than the current behavior).

[Bug 105271] Re: Regression: metacity fails to create windows, sscrolbars, or toolbars in April 10th Synaptic upgrade

2007-04-11 Thread Wayne Witzke
I had a similar problem. For me, it had to do with .gnome2/session. I
had the session manager saving my session by default on logout, and I
think that when I logged out with certain programs running, firefox at
least, it somehow corrupted the file. Deleting .gnome2/session through
a text terminal before logging in via gdm fixes the problem, and I could
replicate the symptoms by logging out with firefox open and then trying
to log back in via gdm, but could not replicate the problem when logging
out with only a terminal open and then trying to log back in.

For a more permanent, reliable fix, I turned off automatic session
saving, and now, even with firefox open, logging out and logging in via
gdm function as expected, though session saving is no longer automatic.

Hope this helps.

[Bug 105679] Hyper win-key mapping not recognized by . . . gnome-keybindings?

2007-04-11 Thread Wayne Witzke
Public bug reported:

I've remapped the win-key to hyper to make it more useful to me, and
while some of the keyboard shortcuts that I've set up with it work, for
instance for metacity, the shotcuts that are apparently managed by the
gnome-settings-daemon don't appear to work with that remapping. So, for
instance, I can set the win-key plus d to hide all windows and focus
desktop in the keyboard shortcuts application, and it works perfectly.
It shows up as Mod4+D in the keyboard shortcuts application and as
Mod4Hyperd in gconf.

If I try to map the same key combination to any of the shortcuts
apparently managed by gnome-settings-daemon (calculator, eject, email,
etc.), it shows up as Mod4+D in keybindings and Mod4Hyperd in gconf,
but nothing happens when the actual keys are pressed with the desktop in
focus.

I'm using Feisty 7.04 (latest) and an IBM model SK-8815 USB keyboard on
an i386 platform running the generic kernel. I saw the same behavior in
Edgy 6.10 before I installed Feisty.

[Bug 105689] lcdproc segfaults with hd44780 driver

2007-04-11 Thread wayne Stallwood
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lcdproc

Arch: Only reproduced on X86-64 so far, there is at least one other
reported instance of this on the Ubuntu forums

Ubuntu Edgy with lcdproc 0.5.0-1 (i.e most current package), same
configuration worked on previous Dapper release on the same hardware.

Loading LCDd either manually or via the boot script with the hd44780
driver enabled in LCDd.conf will result in LCDd segfaulting immediately.
The same instance of the package will load and function with the curses
driver loaded as an alternative to test the configuration.

In order to reproduce there is no requirement to actually have an
hd44780 LCD attached as the segfault will occur even without the display
attached.

To reproduce simply enable the driver in LCDd.conf with
Driver=hd44780
and attempt to start LCDd in foreground mode
LCDd -f -c /etc/LCDd.conf

Given that hd44780 is probably one of the more common USB attached LCD
modules I am making the assumption that this bug is specific to the
AMD64 architecture as otherwise I think there would be more mention or
it on the Ubuntu forums and most likely a bug already submitted.

[Bug 102393] Re: wpa issues in ndiwrapper

2007-04-03 Thread Wayne VanTassel
I should add that wpa has worked intermittently. When I first installed
and configured ndiswrapper, I had wpa until I rebooted. Then, it would
only connect on an open network. WEP was given as a configuration
option, but even if I changed the encryption on the router to WEP, ndis
does not connect. I then completely removed ndiswrapper and all
configuration files, and reintalled. Once again I had wpa until the
computer went to sleep. When it woke up, once again I could only
connect on an open network. WEP is again listed as an encryption option
(I did not test it again) and I can connect on an open network.

output of ndiswrapper -l:

rt2500 : driver installed
device (1814:0201) present (alternate driver: rt2500)

output of ndiswrapper -v

utils Error: no version specified!
driver version:1.38

not sure if the error message indicates a problem? ndiswrapper_utils
shows as installed (latest version)

well the problem is that mysql has its own little world of usernames and

yes that is how I did it also

the problem is if they are already using applications with mysql, they
probably already have a root password set

but possibly it could assume there is no root password, set it, and then
if that fails ask the user for the root password

mysql permissions are extremely capable but very complicated

[Bug 63649] Re: in edgy beta 1 gnome sound panel applet has no effect

2006-11-16 Thread Wayne Schuller
I believe the problem was in my .asoundrc

I deleted my .asoundrc and then reconfigured alsa and it works

This is NOT because my .asoundrc was wrong in dapper.

It is just that the alsa hda-intel drivers are changing rapidly between
versions of alsa.

So I think what happened is what alsa put in my .asoundrc in dapper is
different to what alsa wanted to put into my .asoundrc in edgy.

So it is still kind of a edgy and/or alsa bug. It has an easy fix so you
can probably close this bug report.

I did do a fresh install of edgy, but I kept my /home partition so lots
of dot files remained from dapper. I guess this is a kind of ongoing
problem in upgrades/fresh installs.
