[Bug 1616079] Re: [Latitude E7270, Realtek ALC3235, Speaker, Internal] Pulseaudio fails to detect card, no sound in speaker nor in line out

2021-09-22 Thread WhyteHorse
This is still a bug in 20.04.3 LTS. It's a fresh install with
proprietary drivers enabled from the installer. Could it be routing
analog audio to the wrong place? I can get it to work fine with
bluetooth headphones, usb headphones on the dock and the laptop. I can't
get any audio from the analog jacks on the laptop or the dock or the
built in speakers.

[Bug 886449] Re: [USB-Audio - USB Camera-B4.04.27.1 (playstation eye), recording] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2017-12-30 Thread WhyteHorse
This bug still affects Debian alsa so maybe it should be merged into the
main alsa. It was a problem until there was a kernel update and now the
mic "just works" on newer kernels but the speaker is not working.
alsamixer does see the card and when you select it you get "cannot load
mixer controls: Invalid argument". apaly doesn't see it for some reason:

 $ aplay -l
 List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices
card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 0: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA]
  Subdevices: 7/8

  Subdevice #1: subdevice #1
  Subdevice #2: subdevice #2

  Subdevice #4: subdevice #4
  Subdevice #5: subdevice #5

card 0: ALSA [bcm2835 ALSA], device 1: bcm2835 ALSA [bcm2835 IEC958/HDMI]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
However, arecord does see it:

$ arecord -l
 List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices
card 1: CameraB409241 [USB Camera-B4.09.24.1], device 0: USB Audio [USB Audio]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

This bug affects me currently and I have heard other people were able to
workaround it with a file ~/.asoundrc but I have tried all of those and can't
get any to work.

[Bug 1624320] Re: systemd-resolved appends 127.0.0.53 to resolv.conf alongside existing entries

2017-12-29 Thread WhyteHorse
This bug just compromised every ubuntu machine on my network. It falsely
says that DNSSEC is not supported by the nameserver and resorts to non-
DNSSEC resolution. So every machine on my network just accepted bogus
DNS replies from a MITM. Thanks.

[Bug 1675608] [NEW] OCSP failure gives "unknown error"

2017-03-23 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

This is very confusing and impossible to troubleshoot. It should report

[Bug 1666761] [NEW] Update to OpenCL 1.2 or 2.0

2017-02-21 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Currently, only openCL 1.1 is supported but 1.2 is required by many new
programs coming out and 2.0 is already out. Can we get this upgraded?
It's affecting things downstream like the amdgpu graphics driver which
is affecting all the programs that use the GPU.

[Bug 1659706] [NEW] amdgpu lacks opencl 1.2+

2017-01-26 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.04 my only option is to use amdgpu driver as fglrx was
deprecated. It works just fine but it has a very old implementation of
OpenCL that is preventing me from running all of the things that can be
accelerated by openCL because they all require v1.2 or better. Is there
some way to get this updated to at least 1.2?

[Bug 1637567] [NEW] Festival 2.4 Regression

2016-10-28 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Festival 2.4 breaks compatibility with HTS voices. Apparently the developers
break compatibility every time they release a new version and it no longer
works with the older version's HTS voices, but for a fee, they will let you use
their proprietary voices... wink wink nod nod.
To reproduce, follow the very old instructions here to add an HTS voice:
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=751169=18

Then run festival at the command line and enter this:

festival> (voice_nitech_us_slt_arctic_hts )
nitech_us_slt_arctic_hts
festival> (SayText "Hello from Ubuntu")
Warning: HTS_fopen: Cannot open hts/htsvoice.
aplay: main:593: bad speed value 0
#

I think we should roll back to a known-good-working festival(2.1?) with HTS
voices, fork that version, patch it with the bug fixes in 2.4 less the code
that breaks it, and move on. There's a patch available here:

I already upgraded so I just have to use recall at this point. From a

[Bug 1485708] Re: fstab entry causes emergency mode to come up

2015-08-21 Thread WhyteHorse
It drops to a shell prompt with a motd that says Emergency Mode please
run some command to review the boot logs or else run some other
command to boot normally. I don't recall the exact text but it's a
root shell... In 14.04 it did display the Press S to skip waiting for
filesystem. In 14.10 I went to the grub menu and switched to an older
kernel and it worked with the skip message, but the newer kernel just
dropped to the shell. In 15.04 the newest kernel dropped to the shell
and the older kernel just hung indefinitely.

I removes the fstab entry and the newest kernel boots just fine. That's
all I know...

[Bug 1184725] Re: Laserjet 3150 doesn't print

2014-10-10 Thread WhyteHorse
I haven't been able to test this on 14.04. I use 14.04 now and I believe
the parallel port was disabled in HP driver long ago. If the parallel
port is still disabled then I would recommend filing this bug as an hp
problem.

Anyway I can't generate a cups report because it doesn't use cups(only
hplip is supported). I thought it was very strange that a parallel port
printer would no longer work because the driver doesn't support parallel
ports. Ideally we, as a community, could just add some kind of cups
driver for this printer an bypass HP altogether. In hteory, everything
is there and works, plus it has worked flawlessly until HP droppedthe
parallel port.

[Bug 1173372] Re: apt-get hangs: DKMS: install completed.

2014-09-16 Thread WhyteHorse
This is a bug in the package bcmwl-kernel-source (6.30.223.141+bdcom-0ubuntu2)
It still affects the latest Ubuntu. It causes an endless loop where the package
won't complete installation and apt won't do anything without the package
completing. The solution is as follows(credit goes to another poster)

The command that appears to be hanging is:
modprobe -wl
If you open another terminal and do:
ps aux | grep modprobe
you will see the hung process and can eliminate it using
kill -9 processid

Anyway, the offending package should have a timeout tied to that
modprobe command.

Please bump the priority for this. If you can't add OTR support then
please give instructions how to add a plugin. I've been waiting
patiently for several years for this support. I was thrilled to see an
IM client get audio and video support on Linux. Now it's time to get
encryption. We have the evil US empire spying on human rights activists,
protesters, etc and by not supporting encryption we're enabling that
spying.

[Bug 1184725] [NEW] Laserjet 3150 doesn't print

2013-05-27 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

HP Laserjet 3150 connected to parallel port doesn't print test page (or
anything). The printer is detected and installs fine. It says it printed fine
but nothing happens and no errors. Initially I got Device communication error
5012 hplip... but now the error is gone after installing the latest hplip and
enabling EPP in bios. Prints fine on winXP. Tried using the repository drivers,
followed by compiling the latest from HP. Also tried the hpijs driver. Tried
rebooting. Tried adding via system printer dialogue and hp-setup. Network
printing to another printer works fine(HP Officejet L7555). Verified the bios

[Bug 848796] [NEW] Ubuntu test page gives error when printing using hp

2011-09-13 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to print the Ubuntu default test page on an HP LJ MP2727 with
the device URI of hp:/net/HP_LaserJet_M2727nf_MFP?ip=192.168.2.89

I received the error No %%Bounding box: comment ...

So I switched to the URI socket://192.168.2.89:9100
and now it works fine. Must be a bug in the hp to cups translation of eps or
they left off the bounding box on the test page.

[Bug 175233] Re: Evolution hangs with Formatting Message after several hours

2011-07-28 Thread WhyteHorse
Same problem on 11.04 32-bit. It only occurs when I receive a message
with a meeting request and it must be checking my google calendar which
hangs sometimes due to my connection. Is it possible to add
asynchronicity to the display of messages and contact/calendar/etc
lookups? Or possibly just display the message contents and checking
calendars somewhere so that it doesn't completely hang the program?

[Bug 543157] Re: Totem can't locate codecs h.264 and mpeg4

2010-08-21 Thread WhyteHorse
I just got this bug again with an MP4 file. Followed Sergey K's steps
and it resolved it. Note: I had to choose Completely Remove to get rid
of the stuff and it forced me to remove a bunch of apps like banshee,
democracy player, Miro, etc. Once all that was purged, I installed totem
and ran it, it found the codecs, installed and everything worked.

[Bug 543157] Re: Totem can't locate codecs h.264 and mpeg4

2010-08-21 Thread WhyteHorse
Ok, so I figured out how to reproduce this bug:
1. Download attached mp4 file.
2. Open with Totem and you see a broken codec image.
3. Rename file to a 3gp extension
4. Open with Totem and it plays a 5 second video with no problem.

[Bug 543251] [NEW] mountall causes boot-up to hang on unknown fstab entry

2010-03-21 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mountall

I can't tell if this is the same as the other bugs so please mark as
duplicate if necessary. After upgrading from 9.10Stable to 10.04beta1,
the system reboots and comes to a complete halt with an error from
mountall about an entry in the fstab. The entry has been lost due to
recovering the system but I recall it was some kind of usb filesystem,
possibly something to do with my laptop's card-reader.

I had to press CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot, go into a recovery disk, and
remove the offending line in order to get the system to boot. Mountall
should just discard any entries it doesn't understand and allow boot to
resume or offer the user a shell. I tried CTRL-C and CTRL-K but it
wouldn't respond.

And when I play .3gp file from my camera I get:

which had the latest ugly plugins or somesuch but I can't find anything
for 10.04.

[Bug 543161] [NEW] Indicator Applet doesn't wait for network

Public bug reported:

After logging in, the indicator-me applet does not connect to IM

could be the indicator sees the network as down but then it should login
as soon as the network comes up but it doesn't.

I have to click on Username-Chat Accounts-Some Account-Disable and

[Bug 485488] Re: Applications routed through the pulse pcm alsa-plugin crackle/die quickly

2010-01-10 Thread WhyteHorse
I tried this PPA but I still get sound dying in GLest and a 2 sec delay
when launching a music file in totem. It only has the delay the first
time I run it after booting up. Perhaps my issue is with the Totem Movie
Player 2.28.2 using GStreamer 0.10.25 during initialization because if I
close the app and then play another song it has no delay... Perhaps pre-
cache is not working as designed or my system is hosed?

I can't tell if the system is using less cpu now but I just upgraded to
kernel 2.6.31-17-generic and the system now balances cpus properly and
screams along even if I'm playing music, flash, etc.

Overall can't complain except for GLest not playing sounds after about
2min and playing the snap-crackle-pop just before dying followed by
slight crackles every time a sound event is generated.

[Bug 485488] Re: Applications routed through the pulse pcm alsa-plugin crackle/die quickly

2010-01-04 Thread WhyteHorse
I still have probs with GLest and have a 2 second delay when launching
any audio. I mean the first 2 seconds of audio are cut off. This is with
the default media player and all codecs like mp3, flash, etc.

I must admit things have improved dramatically and these are just minor
annoyances but they do still persist. I don't consider the audio probs
fixed in Karmic. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this further...

[Bug 456699] Re: audio fails in totem when switching to next movie in playlist

2009-10-21 Thread WhyteHorse
It also stops playing if you load a new song/movie/flv while another is
playing. The video or visualizer continues but the audio is completely
gone. If you're very patient, audio will return after about 1min40sec
and start playing from the beginning even though the video is way ahead.

At about the same time this started(1 week ago?) the audio would take a
couple seconds extra to start playing even though the video has already
started. The problem still continues. It's about a 1-2 second lag but
the audio/video are synced, it just cuts off the beginning of the song.

[Bug 446228] [NEW] Pulse audio breaks sound in games

2009-10-08 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The games Glest and Chromium have broken audio when pulse is installed. Steps
to reproduce:
1. Install Ubuntu 9.10 beta
2. Install Chromium or Glest
3. Listen(possibly wait a long time or engage the games so they play many
sounds simultaneously)
4. Hear line noise intermittently which interrupts audio playback

[Bug 415462] Re: Sounds restarts because buffer underrun (maybe related with pulseaudio)

2009-10-03 Thread WhyteHorse
I can confirm the bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection
refused (111) error on 9.10 Beta. The sound works ok off-and-on but
occasionally cuts out and gots to a line-noise sounds for a few seconds.
This worked fine in 9.04, which wasn't using pulse(on my system).

I searched for a bug or some kind of similar info but this was all that
came up.

Confirmed. My /etc/cron.daily/apt wasn't marked executable as well. I
upgraded from 8.10 to beta and then to 9.04. I had all kinds of problems
and one of the last ones I've been looking into was this. Same behaviour
as the original post. We'll see if this fixes it. Attached are my
upgrade logs too.

after a while just got the Network Error. Perhaps Ekiga is booting

[Bug 360867] [NEW] bcm43xx-fwcutter appears in packages but is unknown

2009-04-13 Thread WhyteHorse
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bcm43xx-fwcutter

This package failed to upgrade. I have 2 packages:
b43-fwcutter and b43xx-fwcutter

The b43-fwcutter is installed and the wireless card appears functional
but I am unable to test it due to lack of WAP and was unable to submit
the crash report during upgrade because the NIC(ethernet) went down
during upgrade.

Looking at dmesg, it appears the system has fallen back to the NDISwrapper
module. Here's the dmesg:
