[Bug 365770] Re: Screensaver starts while playing a Video with Kaffeine

2009-06-12 Thread alfredio
I noticed there may be some bad interaction between gnome-screensaver
and power managment. Indeed, my problem is that the screen turns off,
rather than the screensaver starting. Disabling turn-off feature in
power management seems to solve the issue. Maybe disabling the
screensaver should disable turn-off feature too (and thus is a gnome
bug)?

[Bug 376019] [NEW] Double entries in shortcut editor

2009-05-13 Thread alfredio
Public bug reported:

When editing shortcuts in kile 2.1 (ubuntu 9.04), I often find duoble
entries for the same command. For example there are two entries for
"QuickBuild" or "ViewBib", but only one entry for "Selection" (of
QuickBuild Selection). Only modifying one of them makes the shortcut
appear in the program menu; however, the shortcut will work if any of
the two entries is assigned.

Suspecting that I was having some problem with old Kile 2.0
configuration, I also deleted all kile related data under the ~/.kde
directory, but this didn't help.

[Bug 376004] [NEW] Default kbibtex integration (kde part) broken

2009-05-13 Thread alfredio
Public bug reported:

Kile comes with predefined Kbibtex integration (as kde part), however,
in the 9.04 Ubuntu distribution, Kile is using KDE4, while kbibtek is
using KDE3. For this reason, it not possible to integrate kbibtex within
kile. However, kile is still configured to use the libkbibtexpart
library; if used, this configuration leads to an error message "Could
not find the libkbibtekpart library" (even if this library exists in the
/usr/lib/kde3 directory).

One solution could be removing/disabling this configuration until
kbibtex is ported to kde4 in ubuntu.

[Bug 367311] Re: FUSA and multiple X11 displays interaction

2009-04-26 Thread alfredio
** Summary changed:

- shutdown button does not reapper even when FUSA applet removed
+ FUSA and multiple X11 displays interaction

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: fast-user-switch-applet
+ There is an "unexpected interaction" between FUSA behaviour of removing
+ shutdown buttons, and users having multiple X11 displays. Here it is my
+ use case:

- Preamble:
- I used to use FUSA in 8.10. Then, when upgrading to 9.04, shutdown button
disappeared from "System" menu, so I decided to remove FUSA. The first time I
removed FUSA from the panel, shutdown button correctly re-appeared in "System"
menu.
+ I have two displays: 0.0 is the LCD, 0.1 is a CRT TV that I only use to
+ watch films (0.1 is always active, but I keep the CRT TV shut down most
+ of the time). Both of them used to have the FUSA applet when I was using
+ 8.10 (it was added by default, I didn't add them explicitly).

- Problem:
- Now, every time I login, neither the FUSA applet nor the shutdown button in
"System" menu are present. (!!!) There is apparently no way to shutdown the
system, or to logout. The only way I have to get shutdown button in "System"
menu again, is to add and remove FUSA from the panel. After this, the "Systme"
menu buttons are present again.
+ When upgrading from 8.10 to 9.04 I discovered that the shutdown buttons
+ in System menu disappeared, because of FUSA. Since I didn't like this, I
+ decided to remove FUSA and got my buttons back in the System menu. I
+ only removed the FUSA applet from panel 0.0 (forgetting I had FUSA on
+ 0.1 too). The button re-appeared -- even if FUSA was present on display
+ 0.1, and I could logout.
+
+ However, every time I login now, FUSA is not present on display 0.0, but
+ shutdown buttons in System menu are neither, because of the FUSA applet
+ in display 0.1. The result is that display 0.0 is in an inconsistent
+ state: no FUSA, no shutdown buttons.
+
+ Of course, removing FUSA from display 0.1 (or adding/removing FUSA from
+ display 0.0) too solves the issue. Nevertheless, I deem this quite a
+ design error.
+
+ I see two solutions to this problem: 1) FUSA should be "display independent"
(or "system wide") as menus are; or
+ 2) meus should be display dependent (which I don't like)
+
+ Anyway, the real problem I see, is that we are coupling menus and
+ applets, which is very counter intuitive.

[Bug 196811] Re: hal does not detect Quickcam Express as v4l-device

[Bug 196811] Re: hal does not detect Quickcam Express as v4l-device

2008-07-02 Thread alfredio
Update:
- the spca5xx driver is superseded by gspca. Which currently doesn't compile on
Ubuntu Hardy (!!! see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gspca/+bug/213762). However, as
stated at http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html, the old quickcam express webcam
(ID 046d:0870) should not be supported. So it was not worth trying it.
- Then, I tried to patch the qc-usb driver. Since this driver does not compile
on Ubuntu Hardy (!!! Again !!! see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qc-usb/+bug/213114) I made the
following step:
  - download the latest qc-usb-source package from intrepid
  - extract it
  - patch it
  - compile, install and load it

Camorama works fine.
cheese --verbose writes only
device: /dev/video0
on output (as reported by Sebastian), however (surprisingly) the webcam still
does NOT work with cheese!

Note that:
- with the plain driver (the one that ships with Ubuntu kernel), cheese
--verbose does not output anything
- by setting hal properties by hand cheese worked

We're almost to the goal... we're just missing some bits about this very
strange behavior...

[Bug 196811] Re: hal does not detect Quickcam Express as v4l-device

2008-07-02 Thread alfredio
I have some confusion about the module source code.

First, if you go to the qc-usb CVS sourceforge repository, they have two
directories: one is 'qc-usb', the other is 'quickam'.
The patch proposed by Simon applies for the file which is in the 'qc-usb'
directory. Maybe the same patch should be applied to the quickam.c file in the
quickam directory?

Btw, the CVS repository says that the quickam directory is 5yo, while
the qc-usb is 2yo. Is this driver still supported? Or will this patch
remain specific to ubuntu?

Second, there's an spca5xx driver, which seems to me to be newer. If it
supports quickcam express, and correctly handles v4l/hal, we may think
about making this module the default quickcam express module, instead of
the current one.

Finally, I believe that no specific fdi file for quickcam should be
created, if it is possible to handle everything within the driver.

To sum up:
- The freedesktop hal bug (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14809)
shall probably be closed. (if we can handle it in the driver, then hal is not
affected)
- The cheese bug (http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=531835) shall be
marked as duplicate of this bug
- Then we may either patch the current quickcam driver, or test the spca5xx
driver, and, if it works, make it the default driver

I'm going to test the spca5xx driver, and let you know.

[Bug 196811] Re: hal does not detect Quickcam Express as v4l-device

2008-07-01 Thread alfredio
Dear Sebastian,
you're definitely right. Indeed, I managed my quickcam express to work with
cheese by enabling its v4l capabilities in hal.

By reading the bug reported at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=531835
after plugging the webcam, I issued the following commands

hal-set-property --udi /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_46d_870_noserial
--key info.capabilities --strlist-pre video4linux
sudo hal-set-property --udi
/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_46d_870_noserial --key
video4linux.device --string /dev/video0

That is, I manually added the v4l property to the device. Then, when you launch
cheese, it recognizes and correctly uses the webcam.
Unfortunately, these properties are set on-the-fly, and they're lost when I
detach the camera. I'm not an expert with hal, so I don't know
how to store this info permanently (i.e. I don't know anything about fdi files).

So, someone may want to help me in creating the appropriate patch for fdi
files, so that it can be attached to the already reported hal bug at
freedesktop.org?

Thank you all for the support.

[Bug 196811] Re: hal does not detect Quickcam Express as v4l-device

2008-06-30 Thread alfredio
I start supposing that we're having a different problem here. You say that the
webcam isn't recognized as a v4l device, so it cannot be used by
cheese, and other hal-enabled programs.

However, as your sysfs.tar.gz file says (and as I can reproduce locally on my
machine), the
/sys/class/video4linux/video0
symlink is created when the cam is connected (and deleted when it's removed).
This lets me think that the webcam is actually recognized as a video4linux
device.
Still, I can reproduce the bug in Hardy.

Btw, I noticed that in freedesktop, the bug is reported with low priority (and
here as undecided). I would say this bug is
more than low priority, because it makes (non-fundamental) hardware unusable,
so it should be at least rated as normal.

Cheers,
Alfredo

[Bug 158310] Write "Now you can turn off your computer" if hardware does not support apm or acpi

2007-10-29 Thread alfredio
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usplash

If hardware does not support apm or acpi, then the usplash should tell the user

Instead of issuing the "power off" command to the apm/acpi module, it could
write something like
