[Bug 1825420] Re: package linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic 5.0.0-13.14 failed to install/upgrade: triggers looping, abandoned

2019-05-04 Thread arkmundi
Upgraded today from 18.10 and encountered same issue:
Could not install 'linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic'

The upgrade will continue but the 'linux-image-5.0.0-13-generic' package
may not be in a working state. Please consider submitting a bug report
about it.

Could not install the upgrades

The upgrade has aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A
recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

... then rebooted OK. No idea whether I'm good to go or not.

[Bug 1247221] Re: Nautilus doesn't remember setting for showing hidden files correctly when org.gtk.Settings.FileChooser show-hidden is true

2014-11-17 Thread arkmundi
So I'm one of those kinda lazy just want to go from LTS to LTS upgrades
and have everything work guys - just did the upgrade to 14.04. And am
experiencing this issue. And see no way to edit Nautilus preferences so
default behaviour is keep "hidden files" hidden. The edit->preferences
menu item is hidden when it should be visible and the "hidden files" are
visible when they should not be. Was this a joke?

[Bug 575500] Re: refuses to open files with incorrect encoding

2010-07-28 Thread arkmundi
My solution to the problem:
iconv -f 'UTF-8' -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' -o output-file-name --verbose
input-file-name

The -t 'ASCII//IGNORE' option insures that the offensive characters will
be discarded from the output, and the --verbose option tells you where
they were in the file.

[Bug 549904] Re: Help cannot be loaded: Error 500 Unable to compile class for JSP

2010-06-27 Thread arkmundi
Niels, I don't nor do I recommend starting eclipse as root. The
exercise was required so as to resolve the permissions issues, which I
was able to do. It would be helpful, should you be part of the team
that packages eclipse for ubuntu, if you would disclose the metadata you
refer to, so I can better understand what you do to help seat eclipse,
and perhaps make changes to my configuration.

With regards to the "proper" location for software on linux systems, I
expect you'd find a great deal of disagreement with your assertions.
Let's see, the directory is /usr/lib, which should be quite telling.
Every other piece of installed software, by & large, finds its home
there. At runtime, eclipse stores all its metadata in the workspace
designated at startup, either as a command line parameter, in the
eclipse.ini or in perference settings.

[Bug 549904] Re: Help cannot be loaded: Error 500 Unable to compile class for JSP

2010-06-26 Thread arkmundi
Well, just couldn't leave it alone, like a scab. Finally figured out
what was going on, so have it solved. For me, as suggested in previous
posts on this thread, it was NOT that I wasn't using the java-6-openjdk.
Turned out it was file permissions issues.

When I first installed, I installed to /usr/lib/eclipse {which is
arguably the "right and best" location for an application}. But eclipse
is peculiar in that its constantly checking & updating itself and its
plugins. When first invoking a plugin (and help contents is that, like
almost everything eclipse), its going to download and install packages
specific to its invocation. If it can't because of file permissions
issues, then it blows up with a java error stack.

My remedy was to make my user owner of all files in both my eclipse root
(/usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse) and my workspace root (/home/java). To things
right, however, I had to invoke eclipse as system root as follows:
sudo /usr/lib/eclipse/eclipse /home/java
I then do whatever I was doing before, but now with system root privelege, and
presto, checks happen, packages are downloaded, plugins are installed,
configurations are made, whatever. I then close eclipse and do a:
sudo chown -cR owner:group directory-root (for both my eclipse root and
workspace root)
I then invoke eclipse as a user (its bad practice to be running as system
owner).

Seems to work for me for the moment. There may be a better remedy.
Regards.

[Bug 549904] Re: Help cannot be loaded: Error 500 Unable to compile class for JSP

2010-06-26 Thread arkmundi
FYI to any interested: I've abandoned my effort to locate the cause of
this. It persists on my machine, but appears issolated to the
Help-->Help Contents action. I have a working Help tab in the workspace
that has a complete Help Contents. Having a functional help system is
important to new users of Eclipse, which I am. Being new, its
disconcerting to go to the Help menu and have the Help Contents blow up
with a java error stack. I hope someone takes this initiative to fix
it, and post the fix here. Regards.

[Bug 549904] Re: Help cannot be loaded: Error 500 Unable to compile class for JSP

2010-06-24 Thread arkmundi
I've encountered this problem and will be working to fix it. I did not
install eclipse from any of the Ubuntu repositories, choosing to take
advise elsewhere to install it directly from
http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/packages/eclipse-ide-java-ee-
developers/galileosr2. This is because of the rich plug-in set for the
Java EE IDE version of eclipse. I'm running 10.04 lucid lynx.

FYI, I have the openjdk-6-jdk installed, so there must be something else
misssing. The error generated:
  error accessing Help Contents
  HTTP ERROR 500
  Problem accessing /help/index.jsp. Reason:
Unable to compile class for JSP
... must indicate that the help contents are being freshly generated via an
HTTP call for a JSP compilation. So that must mean the correct classpath for
compilation within the eclipse framework is missing.

[Bug 557775] Re: Persistent Storage option always greyed out

I'm confirming that usb-creator is unusable for me. I'm running the

I need persistence. Otherwise there's no point - can just use a LiveCD
burned from the iso. What I'm aiming for is for my Seagate Freeagent
USB drive to have a bootable Ubuntu, along with my partimage system
backup, along with my grsync incremental. That way I can come close to
the state of my system in the event of system failure. Would be great
if those responsible fixed this utility, as its the one we need.
Thanks.

2009-08-16 Thread arkmundi
Daniel, thanks for responding. I've managed to isolate the problem. Its
not ALSA. Its the headphone jack slot on my laptop, a physical connection
problem. That said, I've never managed to get the second (middle) headphone
jact to have sound on my Dell Inspiron 1525. That may be ALSA or its
configuration.

[Bug 397414] [NEW] normal update process results in no sound

2009-07-09 Thread arkmundi
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 9.04, pretty generic. Sound was working great, then just stopped,
without my doing anything.
I used update-manager to keep the fixes coming.
My search of various forums looking for solutions encountered:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/76244
"there seem to be a few troubles with alsa and sound generally right now so i
would guess that in an update or 2's time a lot of this will start behaving as
normal again." Suggested its related to the kernel 2.6.28-13 upgrade, which
came in the last week, and to "Just use the 2.6.28-11-generic kernel. So I
rebooted to that kernel and go sound partially restored - just the right side
speaker of my headphone jack. That might confirm thats it related to the new
kernel.

At System->Preferences->Sound I show the device: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer),
and "Auto detect". I have not touched the generic sound configuration,
as orginally provided for my machine and as modified through the normal
update process. Meaning I have ALSA and pulse-audio attempting to work
together.

My machine is a Dell Inspiron 1525n - bought with Ubuntu preloaded.

Versions (for search 'alsa'):

[Bug 397400] [NEW] normal update process results in no sound

Versions (for search 'alsa'):
alsa-base: 1.0.18.dfsg-1ubuntu9
alsa-utils: 1.0.18-1ubuntu11
libesd-alsa0: 0.2.40-0ubuntu3
libasound2: 1.0.18-1ubuntu9
libasound2-plugins: 1.0.18-1ubuntu4

I use my machine extensively for work as an energy consultant in
Massachusetts and sound is critical for my ongoing review work,
including congressional hearings related to clean energy and climate
change.

I'm also going to file a report via ubuntu-bug.

[Bug 104511] Re: [needs-packaging] jmf - Java Media Framework

2009-03-17 Thread arkmundi
Giovani and all, I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and will upgrade to 8.10 in due course.
According to Canonical:
JMF has been requested for packaging and is assigned to the Ubuntu MOTU
(Universe package administrators). Feel free to comment on this bug and mark it
as affecting you.
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/104511

I have largely circumvented my OpenOffice problem through the use of
macros and bash scripts, so I have media capability as part of an
Impress presentation. For the long-term, however, it'd be good to see
JMF fully packaged by Ubuntu, binaries in repository, and available as
part of the standard.

Re: [Bug 61871] Re: Documents opening in presentation mode

2009-03-15 Thread arkmundi
I was stuck in presentation mode with no way out - no menu bar. Escape does
nothing. I discovered the F5 key will kick back to continuous mode.
Closing at this point saves the setting as a global, so future documents
will be open in continuous mode. I understand now, but for someone
encountering this for a first time, its a bit of a hassle doing the research
to figure out what to do. Maybe the way it operates was intended by the
programmers. If not, then there needs to be some enhancements to the
documentation to clarify, as well as some command line help.

[Bug 61871] Re: Documents opening in presentation mode

2009-03-15 Thread arkmundi
On Hardy, running GNOME Evince 2.22.1.1, have same problem. I opened a
PDF using the "--presentation" option. Now, every PDF document I open
is in presentation mode. I can't seem to restore the original settings.
Where are the global settings for Evince, so I can change them back?
This bug seems to have a history.

[Bug 104511] Re: [needs-packaging] jmf - Java Media Framework

2009-03-11 Thread arkmundi
I followed Giovani instructions from 2009-03-07 with apparent success ... the
.bin executes now. FYI, under Ubuntu {I'm using 8.04}, the instructions are
incorrect at:

http://java.sun.com/javase/technologies/desktop/media/jmf/2.1.1/setup-linux.html
the setenv command doesn't exist because its a csh construct ... use export
instead to set variables asked for: JMFHOME, CLASSPATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH

Will keep this updated with anything else I discover, as I'm in process
making it work. Thanks all contributors!

[Bug 163764] Re: I get the error "Unhandled MIME type: “text/plain”"

2008-11-01 Thread arkmundi
Tried Mike Meredith suggestion for permissions - didn't work for me. Still
stuck on this issue. My exact problem is posted at:
  https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+question/39356

Its the Fidelity site that may be the problem. Note files there are
handled by Javascript. Only Ubuntu users have the problem, and since
Fidelity doesn't support, there's no help forthcoming from them. For
those of this stuck on this problem, its rather tragic. We investors on
Fidelity really, really need those reports. I expect most of us are not
technical enough to know what to do. Thanks if you can help.

[Bug 35223] Re: Laptop TFT monitor - brightness level is not saved

2008-10-24 Thread arkmundi
Same as above - Dell Inspiron 1525 - Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). Things were
OK until I changed System->Preferences->Power Management settings via
ScreenSaver. Screen dims after 5 seconds of inactivity (at Power
Management its set to "Never"). Brightness setting is not restored.
Work-around of adding the LCD Brightness App is OK for now - justt
setting it back to 100%. Still, this is a dose of weird.

[Bug 193154] Re: Another Seagate FreeAgent needs allow_restart quirk

2008-05-21 Thread arkmundi
Have an Inspiron 1525N with Dell installed Ubuntu 7.10 and a Seagate
Freeagent external USB drive, so also this problem. Under Dell
purchased Canonical support agreement, I've opened a case. FYI, I
needed a working external for backup prior to upgrading to 8.04.
Consider me a test case.

[Bug 107668] Re: Setting an invalid mount point can make a removeable media unaccessible

2008-05-16 Thread arkmundi
OK, this last comment from cdaringe on 2008-05-09 fixed my problem -
thank you! I'm an Ubuntu noob trying to do some, what I thought were,
simplistic things. I got trapped by attempting to change the volume
mount point, as described. Then spent the better part of a day, reading
forum posts, trying things to fix my problem, etc. before coming to this
post. Two things: first, thanks again; second - I'd consider a fix a
must in 8.04 LTS. I believe there are a lot of noobs who stumbed into
this hole and were trapped until they found a way to claw their way out.
FYI, my external USB Seagate Freeagent drive is my data repository and
I'm useless without it. Hence, no option for me but claw and claw
again.
