[Bug 161962] Re: Xubuntu works terrible on a PIII 1GHz 128MB ram

2008-03-22 Thread ashrack
have gotten another 128MB stick so I now have 256MB on my lappy and XUBUNTU
works much better.
Great for upping up the minimum and recommended specification.
Was really annoyed by this since it was something similar that MS does to
promote its products. I mean the minimum specs for WinXP are a joke:
PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended;
233-MHz minimum required;
(Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible
processor recommended)
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended
(64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 Gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitor
CD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

[Bug 161962] Re: Xubuntu works terrible on a PIII 1GHz 128MB ram

2007-11-14 Thread ashrack
Tha main problem with XUBUNTU is that on the default install U can not
do anything on the desktop. Because it is simply to sluggish to even
open up Start Menu and this is without any other open problems.

So XUBUNTU is NOT for low memory machines. Even a friend of mine tried
XUBUNTU on a 128MB RAM. He says it was so slow that is impossible to do
anything.

[Bug 161962] Xubuntu works terrible on a PIII 1GHz 128MB ram

2007-11-11 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

I installed Xubuntu Gutsy with alternative CD. And after an hour long
installation I was finally at the desktop. But I couldn't do anything
since the HDD was constantly working. Just to open the Start Menu I had
to wait for a minute and the mouse was jerky.

So then I reinstalled Xubuntu by using the Server option and after the
base was installed I just install XFCE, XORG, FIREFOX, ABIWORD, GNUMERIC
with APTITUDE. Now Xubuntu works better than before. But once I open up
FIREFOX or any other program it starts to growl again.

clean boot with only XFCE terminal opened

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ free -m
 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 114111 2 0 0 17
-/+ buffers/cache: 94 20
Swap: 14

clean boot with firefox and XFCE terminal opened

Mem: 114112 2 0 0 20
-/+ buffers/cache: 92 22
Swap: 149 32116

I thought 128MB ram is enough for normal work in XFCE I guess this is not true.
I mean even WinXP which was 3years old and full of software worked much better
on this lappy.

[Bug 66257] Re: Screen blanks when watching movies

2007-10-28 Thread ashrack
I use Feisty with GNOME but for watching movies I use Kaffeine, which
IMO, way better than TOTEM.

I just recompiled latest Kaffeine without DPMS support and so I can run
DPMS on GNOME but when KAFFEINE is lunched it will not turn off the
monitor at least until I close Kaffeine.

If time permits I will be trying the same thing with Gutsy in the hopes
this problem is fixed, naturally.

[Bug 119081] nautilus doesn't preview audiovideo files

2007-06-07 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In Nautilus when I am in ICON mode the video files are not previewed and
also when I hover the mouse over an MP3 it doesn't play music.

I tried both TOTEM-XINE, TOTEM-GSTREAMER since from what I have read U
need TOTEM to be able to preview video files in Nautilus. I have
xinelibs, gstreamer 0.10(all codecs), ffmpeg, mpg123, mpg321 installed

The movies are between 100 and 700mbs in size so that shouldn't be a
problem. And also I can play all of the video in TOTEM so it isn't a
codec issue.

What else can I do?

[Bug 119081] Re: nautilus doesn't preview audiovideo files

2007-06-07 Thread ashrack
My initial post already says the MPG321 is installed. And now I have
also install vorbis-tools but the MP3s still will not work on the hover
of the mouse.

Just tried installing Ubuntu Feisty Fawn into a VMWARE installation and there
thumbnail previews works for videos and also hovering over MP3 plays song. The
only difference that I can think of between my Feisty Fawn installation and the
one in VMWARE is that in VMWARE UBUNTU still hasn't been updated.
Will update ASAP and report back if this function will also break.

ps. What do U mean by 'I think there no video preview available. ?
Since I can confirm that thumbnail preview should work in nautilus for
video files.

[Bug 104009] Re: [feisty beta] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot

2007-06-05 Thread ashrack
Perhaps the reason why it didn't automaticly convert to UUID in fstab was
because I had installed it using the Alternative installer HERD4 to get the
bare bones install and afterwards installed GNOME-CORE, XORG, GDM. And then
some more packages when I needed them. I like to ave a system with only the
packages I need.

Question about LP:
When in status it says need info. And when somebody replies with the desired
info. Must that induvidual then change the status or just wait and a DEV
working here will change it.
The reason I am asking this is because I have seen quite some LP leports where
it says NEEDS INFO and the required info has been uplouded but the status still
says NEEDS INFO and no DEV have responded.
Also a similar thing happened to this LP report. This is the reason why I
changed the status to 'confirmed'. What should I do next time?

[Bug 66257] Re: Screen blanks when watching movies

2007-04-30 Thread ashrack
I am using Feisty Gnome but 4M DPMS will still turn off the monitor when
watching a movie in FulScreen in both Kaffeine-Xine or Totem-Xine. So in order
to watch a movie without the screen turning off I must first run
xset -dpms.
Here are some of my settings:
###
xset -q
DPMS (Energy Star):
  Standby: 0Suspend: 0Off: 600
  DPMS is Enabled
  Monitor is On

[Bug 107499] Re: Brasero will not burn

2007-04-23 Thread ashrack
U should also add NAUTILUS-BURN to the dependencies along with the rest
of the missing ones. Since I installed UBUNTU using the GNOME-CORE
method I didn't have NAUTILUS-BURN installed by default.After I also
installed NAUTILUS-BURN and WODIM BRASERO started to burn dvds

[Bug 108896] net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1 doesn't work

2007-04-22 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

When uncommenting this line in sysctl:
'net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1'
when I reboot I still get:
##
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
0
##
but inserting this line into sysctl then it works:
net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1

This has already been discused in ubuntuforums and one member already found the

[Bug 108896] Re: net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1 doesn't work

2007-04-22 Thread ashrack
4M and another guy at least it doesn't work.
I put
'net.ipv4.conf.default.forwarding=1'
in sysctl. then I reboot the machine and after I log in to my useraccount and
NIC1 connects to INTERNET and NIC2 assigns DHCPs to client computers IP_FORWARD
is still not enabled and internet doesn't work on client computers.

But if I put
net.ipv4.conf.all.forwarding=1
in sysctl and then reboot the machine, IP_FORWARD is enabled and also the
internet works on the client pcs.

[Bug 107499] Re: Brasero will not burn

2007-04-20 Thread ashrack
No problem. But even thou I have installed those packages BRASERO still will
not burn CDsDVDs.
When I choose to burn, the dialog just sits there at 'getting size' and it does
nothing. Even after half an hour of waiting. And the only way to terminate it
is to do a 'killall'.

[Bug 104009] Re: [feisty beta] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot

2007-04-10 Thread ashrack
Did some fidling around and came to this conclusion.

The old kernel .13 still used the old ATA/ATAPI driver AMD and nVidia IDE
support (BLK_DEV_AMD74XX). And thus it mounts the disk on /dev/hda?.
But this new kernel .14 uses the new Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA
(experimental) drivers AMD/NVidia PATA support (PATA_AMD). And it mounts the
disks as /dev/sda?. So in order to mount drives in this kernel U must use UUID
or /dev/sda? in fstab instead of /dev/hda?.
This info should be posted somewhere since am guessing many ppl with PATA will

[Bug 104009] Re: [feisty beta] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot

2007-04-09 Thread ashrack
This is what I did:
1.I booted the working kernel linux-image-2.6.20-13 into safe mode and
unmounted the EXT3 partition. Then I ran 'e2fsck -f /dev/hda4' which found zero
errors.
2.I rebooted the machine into linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic SAFE MODE. And this
are the errors I could gather.

I believe that there is something wrong with the EXT3 module in the
latest kernel which doesn't correctly recognize the EXT3 partition. See
the attachment.

ps. The photos are taken with my cell phone so they are not of very high
quality:)

[Bug 104009] NOT A DUPLICATE

2007-04-08 Thread ashrack
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 102675 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102675

this is NOT A DUPLICATE.
My bug will not even mount EXT3 volume. And my root partition(reiserfs) is
hardly even accesible. Even simple commands such as 'init 1' 'reboot' 'sudo'
will not work since the console reports that it can not find it.

So I really don't see how this is a duplicate of a bug this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102675
since with this kernel my system doesn't hang at Configuring networks
interfaces during boot up. It doesn't even get to that part.

[Bug 79626] Re: realtek gigabit ethernet not recognised on feisty

2007-04-08 Thread ashrack
Just installed the BETA FEISTY version on my lappy. To my big surprise the ETH0
is not being recognised. Which worked flawlesly in Edgy and Dapper.
This lappy uses the R8169 chispet for its NIC and when doing lsmod the 'r8169'
module is loaded but nothing is using it.
'ifup eth0' reports that ETH0 is unknown. But 'ifconfig up eth0' brings the
ethernet online. But the problem is that I must do this everytime I restart
Feisty in order to have internet conectivity.

I already tried inserting this into '/etc/network/interface'
'auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp'
and then restarting the network but I get an error that ETH0 does not exist.

I also tried it with the GENERIC kernel and the same error happens. I do not

And it halts at trying to mount my home EXT3 partition. From there on I get a
bunch of errors and I am throwed to CLI.

ps. I just finished installing FEISTY on a lappy with REISERFS as root with no
EXT3 partition and the latest kernel doesnt give any errors.
ps2. Could the problem be related to using ReiserFS for root and EXT3 for /home?

[Bug 104009] linux-image 2.6.20-14 halts during boot

2007-04-07 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-14-lowlatency

Yesterday I updated Feisty. And with it came this kernel:
Linux tomi 2.6.20-14-lowlatency #2 SMP PREEMPT Sun Mar 25 00:23:53 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux
B4 I was using 2.6.20-13-lowlatency which worked without problem. But this new
one is unable to mount my home partition which is EXT3 but apperantely mounts
my root REISERFS partition.
Also simple commands such as 'sudo', 'init 1' won't work since the system says
they don't exist.

Now I am back to kernel 2.6.20-13-lowlatency which works great.

ps. Just tried it with linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic and the same error
happens.

[Bug 101916] profile settings are not retained between UbuntuWindows

2007-04-03 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I am sharing a Firefox profile on a FAT32 partition between Windows XP and
LINUX!
The problems are the following:

1. I boot into UBUNTU Feisty and launch Firefox where AUTOSCROOLING OPTION
is TICKED in FF 'preferences'. Then I close FF and reboot to WIndows XP where I
also launch Firefox and the 'autoscrooling option' is still 'ticked. But when I
reboot back to UBUNTU from Windows and open FF the 'autoscrooling option' gets
unticked.

I've tried it with a clean profile an also on a friends computer. He has Win2k3
and UBUNTU DAPPER-GNOME
and the same problem ocures when he was sharing the profile on a FAT32
partition.

The solution for this is to create 'user.js' and put this line in:
--
user_pref(general.autoScroll, true);
--
My question is why is this happening, why do some settings get changed in Linux?

[Bug 52344] Re: Unable to apt-get 'gnome-core-devel'

2006-09-05 Thread ashrack
I believe I understand why this is happening:

Lets say for an example that U are using XGL from the QUINNS' repo! Such
as I was. And so by installing XGL from it, U are upgrading a lot of
other libraries, that your system depends on them. All is is good until
some packages or applications won't work with newer libraries, like
GNOME-CORE-DEVEL. These packages require the older LIBRARIES to work but
XGL requires the new ones!

See the dillema?

##
Can anyone confirm/deny this? Cos I've never quite understood why is it a
problem installing newer LIBS and adding other REPOS until this explanation
came into my mind?

Well if this explanation is true than am gonna post it on
UBUNTUFORUMS.ORG since am sure that a lot of fellow UBUNTUERs have been
wondering the same thing.

[Bug 58364] I can't record a thing

2006-08-31 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

I've Hercules Fortissimo II record sound from my MIC. Microphone works
as when I choose microphone as the recording source from alsamixer I can
hear sound thru the loudspears. Problem is that I can't record this
sound. Gnome-sound-recorder just hangs on recording or produces a file
of 4 bytes. Arecord also hangs and produces the same kind of 4b file
even when going to INIT 1. Needless to say nor SKYPE or WENGO works.

So then I installed the SOX package and tried to record with 'REC' which
comes with the package and with it it works. It clearly records
everything I say into the MIC.

So afterwards I compiled latest ALSA-utils-libs-drivers 1.0.12, thinking
there must be a problem with ALSA since it works with SOX but it still
doesnt work.

In alsamixer I've set the following 3 channels to capture: MIC, CAPTURE, and
ADC and of course I had to unmute and set levels. As per this guide:

[Bug 42117] Re: pppoeconf doesnt find my PPPOE ADSL connection

2006-08-18 Thread ashrack
try
sudo ifup eth0
sudo ifup eth1

At least in my case in order for the PPPOECONF to detect anything I had
to first enable them.

And after doing the upper 2commands post your 'ifconfig'

[Bug 50535] Re: Hardlocks w/ latest FGLRX

2006-06-22 Thread ashrack
I find that strange also.
Since I picked 'fglrx-driver' under package name and then when I posted this it
gave me this:
'linux-restricted-modules-2.6.8.1 (Ubuntu)'

Please fix it if U can since I am only able to change the description.
Or if U wish I can also start another BUG REPORT??

[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails

2006-06-22 Thread ashrack
I 2 have tried the official UBUNTU kernel and also the VANILAs and on none of
the kernel this works. And also lots of ppl report the same bahaviour in
UBUNTUFORUMS.ORG.
So the only workarround is to use FGLRX from ATI.COM and instruct FGLRXs
installer to spit out FGLRX-KERNEL-SOURCE. And then U can compile it easily
with module-assistant.
Doesnt matter which kernel U use!!
So any time frame when this issue is fixed? Its a showstopper for lots of N00Bs
trying to compile their custom KERNELs and also gets ATI on an even worse
reputasion but this time its not their fault.

[Bug 50537] Zoom doesn't work in totem-xine

2006-06-21 Thread ashrack
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-xine

I recall being able to zoom in and out of a movie in totem. I think it
was using the 'R' and 'T' keys. I can't do it anymore - anyone has a
solution for this? I usually zoom in when watching widescreen movies
since I don't mind cutting off some of the sides to gain additional
height on the screen.

ps. 3 ppl have already confirmed this bug

What version of Ubuntu do you use?
Using DAPPER with all of the updates.

Does the menu items for that work?
nope

Did you try several time to make sure that's not due to the zoom factor
changing slowly?
yes

[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails

2006-06-13 Thread ashrack
UBUNTU DEVs should care about modules creation. What kind of OS is it
then that I cant build a module for my custom build kernel?ž

Is there a way to somehow force them or something for them to
respond??!!

[Bug 45563] Re: Build of fglrx module fails

2006-06-12 Thread ashrack
its almost a month since the first bug report was made for this bug and still
no DEV have answered here.
Do U guys think that they are even aware of this bugs or are they just quietly
waiting for the next FGLRX drivers to come out and hopefully they will get it
right. If this is the case it would be nice of them to tell us that we can
expect a fix when the new FGLRX drivers do come out!!!
