[Bug 154682] [Gutsy Final Release] System Preferences Sessions is broken!
Public bug reported: This is the final release of Gutsy. System Preferences Sessions is broken! When I go to the Startup Programs tab and click the Add button and add an application, it appears to work fine, until I close the window. When I go to System Preferences Sessions and Startup Programs tab again, the entry I put in is gone. I cannot add anything to startup. If I go to a command line and enter :~$ sudo gnome-session-properties I can enter new startup entries under the Startup Programs tab and when I close it and reopen it again, they are still there. This appears to be functioning properly, even after reboot, it remains in my Startup Programs tab. If I go back to System Preferences Sessions again, my entry is lost, but if I go to a command line and use sudo, my settings are still there. When I restart the computer, nothing that I entered in sessions using sudo will start either. I cannot start avant-window-navigator or screenlets through sessions when my computer starts because the Sessions Manager for Gutsy appears to be broken. This dmesg, lsmod, lspci -n, lspci -vvnn, sudo lspci -vvnn file I attached is only after I loaded the restricted driver since I could not get into gdm to save the file on my USB flash drive from strait CLI since I do not know how. I would like to add the output of these commands before I update to the restricted driver, but I am not sure how. Could you explain how to do this? I am not sure the path to my USB flash drive, or if I will even have rights to in from CLI. I am also not sure how to output the text of the command line output to a file on my USB flash drive without a GUI. This should give you a bird's eye view of what is happening before I load the restricted driver. [Bug 132413] Screen Resolution with Display Settings Dialog
Public bug reported: I am not sure if this is a bug or wishlist, but I would like to see the screen resolution settings in a tab next to the desktop effects, screen saver, wallpaper, and other settings in one place. This way when you right click on the desktop, you only need to click on the screen resolution tab to adjust the screen resolution. This would simplify things. So what we are doing, is updating the driver from the repository. Isn't the newest driver included in Ubuntu when it releases or is it because it's the restricted driver? So after I install I will have to do this again, but only one time? How long has this been happening? I couldn't get Feisty to work either. I wonder if they are working on this? [Bug 110193] Fixing known critical bugs before release.
Public bug reported: For example: This release brought new focus to non-free drivers/codecs by making it easier to install them. Things are not perfect yet though, as there is no version of ffmpeg that's built with AAC in the repos, and Ubuntu's official version of Gstreamer's ugly codec collection has LAME support removed and so SoundJuicer still can't encode to mp3. It's details like these these that must be worked out before offering an even better first-time experience to newcomers. * On some hardware (especially on some models of the popular IBM laptops), when waking up from sleep, the USB subsystem is totally dead and only a reboot fixes it. * S3 3D support is broken, while the 2D driver is full of bugs limitations (and occasionally gets major visual artifacts after a wake- up). It's bugs like the two mentioned above that make me wonder if Canonical has all it takes to play ball in that new market stage against XP or OSX. Under no circumstances I would expect Microsoft or Apple to ship an OS with these kinds of bugs in them. It is time for Canonical to realize that when major bugs still exist, they must first fix them and then release. While what is a major bug is a subjective issue, the point of measurement must always be Microsoft and Apple. [Bug 63418] Re: CPU soft lockup during boot if ipw3945 kill switch is on
Thanks for you comment brokencrystal. In the terminal output you've attached I can't see any mention of the ipw3945 driver. This bug is about that driver. If you don't use the ipw3945 driver then your bug is a different one. If that's the case please make a seperate bug report for your problems with bootup. From what you've said my guess would be that the computer is trying to boot from the SD card - but that discussion is for your bug report when it's ready. Thanks. The reason that I left the reply about the SD card is because I originally (Scroll all the way up to the top of this bug report and you will see it) thought this was my bug, but later realized what was happening. I wanted to follow up so you were not wasting your time trying to figure this out on my machine when that was not really my problem to begin with. I posted a bug report here for the SD card problem... https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/90560 Maybe you can go there and help figure out the problem. That would be nice. The laptop is not trying to boot to the SD card. This is not BIOS related as it boots half way through Ubuntu and then hangs with the CPU 0 Soft Lock or whatever it's called. Also, Vista boots fine from the DVD and the HD, but Ubuntu hangs if a card is in the built-in slot, which makes me believe the problem is in Ubuntu or the Linux Kernel itself. [Bug 74830] Re: Linux won't recognize had drive on Dell Inspiron 1501
pci=nomsi does work as I have the same notebook, but if you have a SD card in the built-in slot, Ubuntu will boot the live CD without a CPU fault and Ubuntu will NOT install. It will error out while trying to boot the live CD. It will never boot completely with a SD card in the built-in slot. Windows Vista will boot even with the SD card in the slot... This makes me believe the problem lies in Ubuntu or the Linux Kernel itself... I believe the error was something like CPU 0 Soft Lock or something similar to that. Also, the built-in wireless card does not work on the Dell Inspiron 1501. -- Linux won't recognize had drive on Dell Inspiron 1501 https://launchpad.net/bugs/74830 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 74830] Re: Linux won't recognize had drive on Dell Inspiron 1501
I wanted to add that although pci=nomsi does work, the average new user will not know this and assume that Ubuntu is broken. Also, if a SD card is in the built-in slot, the user will not connect the two and assume Ubuntu is broken when it locks up during every live CD boot and/or install. -- Linux won't recognize had drive on Dell Inspiron 1501 https://launchpad.net/bugs/74830 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
