[Bug 432521] Re: kdm does not restart X server (that crashed on logout)

2009-11-15 Thread chiefaua
Hi,

After installing this update, the login screen (kdm in my case) doesn't show up
any more. I only get a black screen with sometimes video garbage.
Changing to another VT doesn't work, there is also only a black screen with a
lonley _ somewhere on the screen (not in the native video resolution by the
way).
Restarting in recovery mode or with the nomodeset kernel parameter does work
sometimes, sometimes this only leads to a black screen as well. Sometimes,
after starting in recovery mode or with nomodeset, the normal startup works
again once, but after another restart the black screen problem occurs again.

I would like to test if my problem really relates to the latest update,
but I couldn't find the older package any more. Where can I find it, and
would there be a problem if I simply reinstall the older package?

Regards,
Thomas

[Bug 289852] Re: intrepid: printing very slow

2009-04-06 Thread chiefaua
Hi there,

I've got the same problem. I simply wanted to print this (http://www.fim
.uni-
linz.ac.at/lva/IT_Recht_Computerforensik/ws2008/Introduction_to_Computer_Forensics.pdf)
with 4 pages on one. Printing from okular and acrobat failed due to too
heavy memory/cpu load and eventually an error.

It seems as if cups does some heavy filtering (ps takes a lot of cpu
cycles), which makes the whole experience not at all enjoyable.

I tried to print the pdf with 4 pages on one with acrobat to a .ps file,
which takes only a couple of seconds. The finishing file has only about
10MB. Then I tried to turn the pages in the .ps file around (using
ps2ps), but this produced only white pages in the output. Trying to
rewrite the .ps file with ghostscript produced a huge (~70MB) output
file, but it was at least readable.

I finally managed to print the files by manually pipeing it through my
printer-filter and then to lpr -l. The filter is called filterHL5040
for my Brother HL5040 and obviously produces the right results for my
printer. This only takes a couple of seconds for the whole file and
works nicely.

So finally I don't understand why cups does not do the same, namely
pipeing the input postscript file through the filter and writing it to
my printer.

BTW I am using Kubuntu 8.10 32 bit with latest updates with proposed
enabled.

[Bug 209701] Re: [hardy] octave appears by itself in science menu

2008-05-13 Thread chiefaua
In my start menu, octave shows up twice:

in Education-Mathematics
in Education-Science

I don't know if octave really belongs to Education (for me it would be a
more scientific application than an educational one). But in every case,
octave should only show up once (in my start menu octave is the one and
only application in both of these sub-menus...).

I know that Mathematica, a commercial maths package, is located in
Science and Mathematics, where I searched for octave in the first place
too.

[Bug 221110] [NEW] Laptop fails to reboot / boot after update to hardy

2008-04-23 Thread chiefaua
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-image

I upgraded to hardy yesterday.

When I want to reboot my laptop (an Asus A6B00G) the system shuts down
nicely. But after the restart the BIOS fails to boot the machine. I just
see the Asus Logo (the one which hides the actual BIOS screen), and
that's it. If I reboot the laptop another time (pressing 4 sec power
off, repower it), then it's fine again.

Much worse is when I hibernate the laptop. Everything goes well until
the system shuts down. But then, when I want to start the laptop again,
nothing happens. Nothing at all, nothing to see, only some LED blinking
up. Even when restarting, nothing happens. That's really bad.

The resolution was to unplug the laptop, remove the battery, wait a
moment, plug in everything again, and voilà, the system works again. It
even resumed correctly from hibernation.

I think that's a really bad bug, because not every user would think of
unplugging and unmounting the battery in such a case. Many users would
simply think that Ubuntu broke their entire machine.

Everything worked fine in Feisty and Gutsy by the way.

Regards,
Thomas

[Bug 217194] [NEW] System hangs after resume from hibernation, mouse continues to work

2008-04-14 Thread chiefaua
Public bug reported:

I usually only hibernate my system to be able to quickly resume working
afterwards. Usually, that works perfectly for me.

But sometimes one of the following things happen:

- I come back into my KDE session and everything works just fine. But
after a couple of moments, the system hangs. I can continue moving my
mouse, but nothing responds. Keyboard input doesn't work any more.
Usually I can switch to a console, but switching back doesn't change
anything (sometimes the screen gets corrupted a little bit). When I stop
KDE (kdeinit_shutdown) then X gets restarted (I think), and I can login
via KDM again. Then everything works again.

- Sometimes everything just hangs (except the mouse), and I can't switch
to the terminal again. This happened just recently. I pressed Alt-
SysReq-t to dump the state, and then rebooted with Alt-SysReq-S, -U, -B.

I include the part of /var/log/messages from the failed resume attempt.

[Bug 180074] Re: very frequent disconnects with networkmanager + knetworkmanager

2008-03-03 Thread chiefaua
I'm affected too.
Whenever my system wakes up (I usually just hibernate instead of shut down my
machine), I have to re-connect to the network I was previously in.
KNetworkManager then establishes the connection, and everything works fine for
a couple of seconds/minutes. After that period, KNetworkManager shows the icon
of the wired network (a RJ45 plug), and my network connection is gone.
After re-clicking on my wireless network, the connection is established again,
and usually after 2 or 3 reconnects the connection is stable (like right now).

This always happens to me when I am in a wireless network.

[Bug 174871] openoffice hangs when using the formula-editors for vlookup

[Bug 174879] openoffice fails to import csv

2007-12-08 Thread chiefaua
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I have exported a quite simple csv from openoffice.

The format is like
A, 0.123, 0.42, 0.2341, 0.2341, 0.218

The file is 126 KB and contains 3000 lines. Openoffice had no problems
to create the file, nor to handle that amount of data correctly in the
original table.

When I try to open the csv with Openoffice, it eats up my whole cpu time and
the system becomes quite unusable (had to switch to console and kill
Openoffice).
Eventually (after making a cup of tea ;-) ) Openoffice brings me the import
dialogue, but it does not respond, and altough the settings mached exacly the
settings I used to export the csv, the preview at the bottom displayed only
rubbish.
