[Bug 237291] [NEW] Brightness settings not remembered on T61

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Kubuntu 8.04 with current updates 2008-06-04:

Although the brightness keys , work fine, brightness
settings are not remembered on Lenovo Thinkpad T61. I tried it with kde-
guidance-powermanager and with kpowersave none of them remember the
brightness settings when locking the screen and returning back to
desktop session.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Change brightness in kde-guidance-powermanager applet for example to 40%
2. Everything will be fine
3. Lock your screen > Main menu > Lock session
4. Screen goes black
5. Move your mouse and type in your password and the screen will go back to
100% brightness

Output of /var/log/acpi: Brightness keys just work fine, but after
unlocking session, there is no entry in log file that brightness jumped
up to 100% again:

[Bug 237294] [NEW] Kubuntu display settings completely screwed-up xorg.conf

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kde-systemsettings

Kubuntu 8.04 with current updates 2008-06-04:

After adjusting monitor settings with 'Monitor & Display' tool in
systemsettings, my xorg.conf file is totaly screwed-up. After logging
out, X doesn't start any more. Instead I got the fallback solution from
'bullet proof X' where I could adjust the settings. Not sure if this
bullet proof X fallback is in Kubuntu by default, because I also
installed ubuntu-desktop.

But apart from that:

'Monitor & Display' tool totaly screwed-up my xorg.conf on a Thinkpad
Z61 with Intel GMA950 and now on T61 with Intel GM965!

This is a critical bug in my point of view, because a beginner doesn't
know what to do!

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open > Main menu > Systemsettings
2. Choose 'Monitor & Display' settings
3. Become system administrator
4. Adjust the settings for an external non TFT monitor, so that it is below
your laptop display (_no_ clone mode)
5. Logout you session and X server won't start correctly any more

I attached xorg.conf files - xorg.conf.original is the file which was
detected by Kubuntu while installing it

[Bug 237291] Re: Brightness settings not remembered on T61

2008-06-04 Thread felix.rommel
Hello Andreas,

first I updated BIOS to new version but it didn't help. Then I did the
steps mentioned:

1. I adjusted screen brightness to 42% in kde-guidance-powermanager
2. Did the other steps...
6. When my session came back, brightness was much to bright again; When I
pressed brightness down key once, the pop-up said 20%

[Bug 214593] Re: Memory leak in Networkmanager when switching between wired/wireless

2008-06-05 Thread felix.rommel
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 203016 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/203016

It must be a problem with NetworkManager itself:

$ ps aux|grep -i network
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
felix 2461 0.4 0.3 34256 7656 ?S16:27 1:14
knetworkmanager [kdeinit]
...
root 5658 0.4 30.4 639036 618644 ? Ssl 12:51 1:57
/usr/sbin/NetworkManager --pid-file /var/run/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.pid
root 5672 0.0 0.0 3536 1172 ?Ss 12:51 0:00
/usr/sbin/NetworkManagerDispatcher --pid-file
/var/run/NetworkManager/NetworkManagerDispatcher.pid

knetworkmanager needs only 7 MByte but NetworkManager itself eats about
618 MByte after a few hours uptime!

[Bug 202009] Re: update-grub not updating menu.lst

2008-07-10 Thread felix.rommel
Another big problem is:

If I start grub-update and choose the menu.lst version which is provided
by the packager, my menu.lst file grows bigger and bigger everytime I
run grub-update.

That mustn't happen - choosing menu.lst version from packager should
create a clean menu.lst file - otherwise people cannot recreate a clean
file if they have changed some values!

I attach my menu.lst file with lots (!) of multiple entries (I had to
compress it because it is over 2 MByte big!)

[Bug 203016] Re: Memory Leak in NetworkManager

2008-08-13 Thread felix.rommel
I know this is a plattform for bugs, but it seems this major bug won't
get fixed in hardy - please correct me if I'm wrong... that's why I post
some lines for people who want to work with their Kubuntu without
getting their memory eaten up... I recommend using wicd:

http://wicd.sourceforge.net/

I had no problems with it so far! It uses less memory and I reached all
wireless lan's with it without problems!

Just add the following line to you /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://apt.wicd.net hardy extras

The only thing which you have to choose manually is the encryption of
the wlan. Just start the GUI with:

/opt/wicd/gui.py

If you should have problems with it just restart the daemon and refresh
the list with available wlans:

sudo /etc/init.d/wicd restart

[Bug 277957] [NEW] Display settings in systemsettings do not work (i965)

2008-10-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: systemsettings-kde4

Version:

Hardy to Intrepid update with current updates (200810040844)
xserver-xorg 1:7.4~2ubuntu5
systemsettings 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1

Problem:

Changing display size of external monitor does NOT work!

Solution:

I have added a bash script for setting display sizes. With that script
you can change the resolution of Intel based cards. I have NOT tested it
with other graphic chips!

copy the xserver-mode script to ~/bin
copy the d_dialog_inc.bash script to ~/lib

Please adapt the display setttings application to use the given xrandr
calls.

[Bug 44082] Re: GNOME Panel icons (on right side) move apparently randomly on session start in some situations

2008-10-04 Thread felix.rommel
Is there any chance that the fix from Gnome 2.24 is backported to Hardy?

The moving icons on panel is the only reason why I instsall beginners
Kubuntu at the moment... In my point of view this is a major bug because
the panel is the most visible thing on a beginner desktop and if that
doesn't work they ask themselves if the system is broken...

[Bug 1003266] [NEW] Printing/scanning not possible with HP Laserjet 1212

2012-05-22 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Laserjet 1212 does not work. See attached syslog (Relevant information
starts at line 268). I did the following steps:

1. Plugged in Laserjet 1212.
2. Printer was added automatically by Ubuntu.
3. Printing test page was not possible. Seems Laserjet 1212 ist not in list of
supported printers (See attached log file).
4. Scanning with Simple Scan was not possible.
5. Removed apparmor completely.
6. Tried again printing/scanning but it did not work either.
7. Tried it with HP Toolbox but it said there must be installed a plugin.
8. Installing the needed Plugin was not possible because of problem with
policykit (See attached log file):

...
May 22 22:53:00 adler dbus[1545]: [system] Activating service
name='com.hp.hplip' (using servicehelper)
May 22 22:53:00 adler hp-pkservice: hp-pkservice[5489]: error: Unable to start

...

How to reproduce:

1. Plug in Laserjet 1212.
2. Print the test page.
3. Test page won't be printed.
4. Make a scan.
5. Scan ist not possible.

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2012-06-15 Thread felix.rommel
@Canonical: Why don't you make the lowlatency kernel as the default one
instead of generic kernel? This should solve the problem of bad
responsiveness correlated with graphical user interface.

Even if the throughput isn't getting better with lowlatency kernel - it
feels much faster if your mouse pointer moves _without_ dropouts or
menus pop up instantly under heavy disk I/O.

On graphical desktops it's not always the real throughput what makes the
system feels fast, but the responsivness! Even if it takes a second
longer to copy a big file, your system "feels" much fast if mouse
pointer still moves _without_ dropouts or menus pop up instantly.

[Bug 933960] [NEW] FRQ: Make Ubuntus default theme (e.g. Ambiance) default Gtk+ theme

2012-02-16 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

FRQ (Feature Request):

Make Ubuntus default theme (e. g. Ambiance) the default fallback Gtk+
theme.

The problem is:

If you log out for example and the gnome-settings-daemon exits before
the desktop session closes completely, the Gtk+ theme falls back to its
current default theme. That means it changes for a few seconds from
Ambiance to the default "plain" outdated looking Gtk+ theme which
_doesn't_ look good and hurts the eyes!

Expected behavior:

If a good looking skin like Ambiance is the default Gtk+ fallback theme,
it doesn't "hurt" the eyes if applications fall back to it in the case
where gnome-settings-daemon is gone (see logout example).

[Bug 32286] Re: Gnome panel is gone - GConf problem?

2006-09-29 Thread felix.rommel
I only use one panel on top now. I added a second panel to test if it
works now. I got no error when any more more when logging in.

Seems this problem is fixed.

But there is another problem with panel - if it hangs and I do a Ctrl-
Alt-Backspace to kill the X server many Gnome apps stay in background
and won't go away until I kill them in a shell. I have had this problem
in Ubuntu, Debian, SUSE with Gnome desktop. I think I will post another
bug report about this problem.

[Bug 40276] Re: Gnome Panel overlapps Adobe Reader (acroread) in fullscreen mode

In another bug report there was a patch for Metacity which solves the
panel problem. I can't remember the exact bug report number, but please
patch Metacity and release it as an update.

Otherwise Dapper is not business ready in my eyes if there can't be
shown PDF's in fullscreen. And a hack which has to be done by users
can't be a solution for an enterprise distribution...

[Bug 58925] Edgy Knot: Black screen with via driver

2006-09-04 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-via

Edgy Knot2:

In Dapper I had to insert the option

Option "VBEModes" "true"

in the "Device" section of xorg.conf to get the via driver work with my
card. Now with Edgy that doesn't help but there appears a black screen.

When I start a X session from a running X session, X throws an error
message:

/usr/bin/X: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/via_drv.so: undefined symbol: assert

Xorg 7.1 should work with the via driver and my graphics card KN400,
because in openSUSE 10.2alpha3 it works. At the moment I can only use
vesa driver.

Maybe this problem is related to bug 21416:

https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-

I attach the X server log.

I think I found the problem:

If I start KDE apps like Kontact under Gnome - the keyboard focus gets
lost in the systray where I have the KAlarm and KMail icons docked to
systray.

If I quit KAlarm and KMail I can navigate through the panel with the
keyboard without problems.

[Bug 58431] Wish: Please UNFOLD Gtk save dialogs as default

2006-08-31 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libgtk2.0-0

Please patch Gtk so that the save dialogs pop up unfolded so that one do
NOT has to unfold it EVERY TIME he/she wants to save a file which is
very, very disturbing!

I saw a patch for that on the following page - it's for Gentoo so I
don't know if it is also usable for Ubuntu:

http://twc.sshunet.nl/~mpsindla/files/gtk+-dialog.patch

I hoped that this will be done in Edgy but there, there are still this -
not so well thought - folded save dialogs. But it would be nice to also
have this for Dapper.

Thank you.

Yes, that's correct. UUID which is in /etc/fstab does not work any more
- that's why I changed that entry to classical /etc/sda8. See attached
/etc/fstab.

Last lines "/tmp/app/1/image /tmp/app/1 cramfs,iso9660

[Bug 141106] No way to get Network-Mangager back after clicking manual configuration

2007-09-19 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Gutsy alpha + current updates:

Description:

When clicking on "Manual configuration..." in network-manager applet,
the nm-applet icon sometimes disappears from panel. That means there is
no way to go back to automatic network configuration with network-
manager.

But even if icon of manual network config tool appears in panel, there
is no graphical way to get back the automatic network configuration with
nm-applet.

Expected behavior:

After clicking manual configuration, there should appear the manual
network config applet icon with an option to switch back to network-
manager with one click.

Same on Gutsy alpha + current updates:

Objects on Gnome panel jump around:

- Sometimes when making settings with Pessulus
- When changing screen resolution
- Sometimes when loggin in

Objects do not save their position - I'm not sure but I think it is
related with that Bonobo stuff which is used in applets!?

The panel jumps around:

- When extending TFT laptop display with external monitor to the right
- With this setting making a movie or game fullscreen

[Bug 124536] Re: GDM login doesn't respect/stick the chosen locale

2007-09-21 Thread felix.rommel
As far as I understand the bug, I can confirm it:

I have "german" for GDM LOGIN screen. German is also the default for
user sessions.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Type your username and press
2. Type your password
3. Now choose a language in GDM menu: > Options > Select language, for example
in this case "English USA"
4. There pops up a dialog which asks you if GDM LOGIN screen shall be restarted
with new language setting.
5. Click on "No" because I want to keep "german" for my GDM LOGIN screen.
6. Then there pops up another dialog which asks you if you want to make the new
language setting the default for your GNOME SESSION
7. Click on "Make default" because I want to have my GNOME SESSION in "english"
8. Log out of your Gnome session
9. GDM LOGIN screen still has "german" as language what's correct
10. Now login to your Gnome session with same user from step 1

Results:

After logging in Gnome again, "german" is the language for the GNOME
SESSION which is WRONG, because I want to have ghe GNOME SESSION in
"english"!

Exptected behavior:

It must be possible to have GDM LOGIN screen for example in "german" but
your GNOME SESSIONS in "english" for example!

[Bug 141106] Re: network manager crashes when /etc/network/interfaces is touched [race]

2007-09-21 Thread felix.rommel
Ok, seems you could reproduce the problem. I insert the steps
nevertheless:

Steps to reproduce:

I have Network-manager running with icon in panel. I get an IP address
through DHCP from a router.

1. Click on Network-Manager applet
2. Choose "Manual Configuration"
3. Click on properties of your wired connection
4. Disable "Enable roaming mode"
5. Choose > Configuration > Static IP address
6. Choose some static address, subnet mask and gateway and click OK
7. Next click on tabs "General", "DNS", "Hosts" in Network settings dialog

Results:

- nm-applet DISAPPEARS from panel but it's still in memory:

1003 13785 0.1 0.9 55216 14672 ?S11:26 0:00 nm-
applet --sm-disable

- It seems that manual network changes are not accepted and IP address
stays the same.

Expected behavior:

nm-applet should stay in panel so that there is the possibility to
change back to roaming mode.

[Bug 126719] Re: GDM does not kill resistant user processes after logout

2007-09-21 Thread felix.rommel
For me this is not a whishlist but a BUG. GDM 2.20 is out and nothing
happened upstream.

Please add an entry to GDM script that kills user processes. It's very
annoying to have many resistant processes running around after logging
out or killing X server. I'm not sure but they maybe interfere with each
other, if same user logs in again!?

I think Gnome session manager for example can collide if there is
already a running Gnome session manager. In my point of view this
session manager is not very reliable and if there is another one still
running there might be problems. Here sometimes session manager even
does not start correctly after a FRESH system startup.

What about computers where lots of people logout and login again many
times a day?

There you have lots of resistant processes staying in memory which is
not a good thing in my point of view. They are also using memory and in
case of Tracker staying in memory, it maybe even still use CPU.

[Bug 125941] Re: Displayconfig-gtk: problems with Intel GMA950 on Thinkpad

2007-09-12 Thread felix.rommel
I got it working with links from Brian Pitts
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/displayconfig-
gtk/+bug/125941/comments/7). I attach my working xorg.conf.
Displayconfig should produce sth. like that.

I'm able to activate my external monitor with following command:

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1024x768_70.00 --right-of LVDS

Gnome panel is flipping to the external monitor which shouldn't, but
everything else works without problems.

The key parts are:

- Virtual ...
- Modeline for setting good refresh rates on external CRT monitors

displayconfig-gtk should use new intel driver with new xrandr - that
should do the trick for intel graphic cards!?

[Bug 148070] Re: KeyJnote failing Error: pdftoppm produced an unreadable file (page 1)

@Tim:
Your patch works here with manually installed KeyJNote. Would be nice if the
error gets fixed before Gutsy will be released in 2 days.

[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] Suspend to Ram does not work on Z61m

2007-09-25 Thread felix.rommel
My Z61m with INTEL (!) GMA 950 graphics card suspends to RAM and resumes
with newest kernel 2.6.22-12. Gnome-Power-Manager still reports problems
after resume but the system keeps running now. It seems to be stable - I
did 2 suspend to RAM and resumes and still work with it.

For me it looks like if system suspends too early. If I interpret syslog
right, suspend finishes until after powering system on again and then it
starts resuming!?

[Bug 128852] Re: Problems with resume from suspend to RAM on Thinkpad Z61m

2007-09-25 Thread felix.rommel
OK, same thing on Gutsy alpha + current updates.

It must be a problem with autosuspend function with Gnome Power Manager.
If I suspend to RAM manually with right click on systray icon, it works.

I'll attach a cleaned up /var/log/syslog - autosuspend part starts at
"Sep 25 21:27:43".

[Bug 144957] KDE Human and Tangerine icons not complete

2007-09-25 Thread felix.rommel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-icon-theme

Description:

When working in Gnome and choosing KDE human or Tangerine icons, there
are missing icons in Kile.

How to reproduce:

1. Start your Gnome session
2. Open KControl
3. Choose KDE human or Tangerine icons
4. Open Kile

Results:

In Kile (KDE LaTeX editor) there are missing icons in toolbars. If I
choose plain "Tango" icons, toolbar icons in Kile are displayed.

Expected behavior:

When using KDE human icons for KDE applications for better look'n'feel
in Gnome session, all icons in KDE applications should be displayed.

But I think that this is an important feature, too!

[Bug 77010] Re: Overuse of system beep without volume control

2007-09-25 Thread felix.rommel
I also agree disabling system beeps also in virtual consoles. If you
have your loudspeakers pluged in and want to listen to music and a
system beep appears it's a big pain for the ears! Especially when your
loudspeakers stand in the near, for example on your desk!

The problem on my Thinkpad Z61m is - even if I listen to music in low
volume the beep is so much louder than normal music that it trashes the
ears.

I also cannot disable or lower the volume of my PC speakers in Gnome
mixer:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition
Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Lenovo ThinkPad T60/R60 series
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 21
