[Bug 1507344] Re: Add volume control support to lightdm-gtk-greeter

I went out on a limb and marked this as affecting lubuntu-meta, since
Lubuntu uses lightdm-gtk-greeter by default.

[Bug 1621649] [NEW] "Downloading files failed" dialog appears from nowhere

2016-09-08 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

Apologies, I don't know the exact text of the dialog box, so it's
lightly paraphrased (I couldn't find the entire text in the locale files
either).

SUMMARY

I believe what is happening is when lubuntu-software-center runs in the
background to check for updates, a failure to download indexes may cause
this error, which pops up out of nowhere with no explanation.

SETUP

Do nothing, run lubuntu as normal. This may be triggered by a failure to
download package indexes but I have not verified that.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

Eventually, a "Software updater" dialog will appear, declaring something
like "Downloading files failed. Please check your Internet connection."
There is no other explanation and in my experience the dialog appears
under other windows.

WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN

A tasktray icon and/or notification would be best; failing that, some
kind of dialog with more useful information.

[Bug 1615335] [NEW] update-manager "system must restart" dialog confusing

2016-08-21 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

This bug is against Lubuntu 16.04 specifically.

SCENARIO

A user starts update-manager when updates have already been applied
which require a system restart. A dialog titled "Software Updater"
appears, with text "The computer needs to restart to finish installing
updates", with buttons for "Settings...", "Restart Later" and "Restart
Now..."

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

If the user selects "Restart Later," update-manager exits with no
further interaction. This can be confusing as it's unclear whether the
program is doing something without feedback or has crashed.

WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN

I expect to be aware that selecting "Restart Later" will cause update-
manager to exit.

SUGGESTION

Reword "Restart Later" to "Cancel" or "Exit."

[Bug 1615330] [NEW] no graphical overlay displayed for volume control keys

2016-08-21 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

I'm using Lubuntu on a 2008 Macbook with hardware volume control keys.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

Use the volume control keys (mute, up, down). Volume control works. No
graphical overlay is displayed.

WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN

A graphical overlay should be displayed on the desktop when the hardware
volume controls are used.

It's worth noting that the hardware brightness controls *do* display a
graphical overlay.

[Bug 1178272] Re: Without pulseaudio, banshee and rhythmbox report "jack server is not running or cannot be started" and do not play

2016-08-20 Thread gmorehou
This is still a problem in Lubuntu 16.04. gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio is
installed by default (presumably following Ubuntu), gstreamer1.0-alsa is
not.

'sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-alsa' fixes the problem. Gstreamer apps
such as banshee now output audio instead of silence.

I will file a bug against lubuntu-desktop and reference this bug.

[Bug 1615326] [NEW] volume control UI too sticky (Lubuntu 16.04)

2016-08-20 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

This bug is regarding the volume control applet/widget/whatever in
Lubuntu 16.04 in lxpanel.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS

Upon clicking the volume control icon, a slider pops up. Upon clicking
anywhere else on the display, in other windows, in the panel itself, the
slider remains visible and on top of most other elements on the display
with one notable exception, context menus from other panel applets (or

[Bug 1608036] [NEW] grub2 install fails on 2008 macbook, gpt partition table

2016-07-30 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

Installing grub from the Lubuntu 16.04 disk does not work (this crash
report is on a Macbook with GPT partition table, but this is about my
5th install attempt, and grub cannot be installed on an msdos flavor
partition table either).

Root fs is ext4. There is no separate /boot partition. There is a 1MB
biosgrub partition.

There is an efi partition created anew on this particular install
attempt, but not having an efi partition makes no difference, the
failure still occurs.

To be clear, I have not yet been successful AT ALL getting grub to
install on this Macbook. It has failed every single time, often leading
to dialog boxes which ignore the OK button, installer crashes, etc.

[Bug 1588338] Re: Ubiquity fails to install on Mac Mini 2006

2016-07-30 Thread gmorehou
This is happening to me in the Lubuntu 16.04 install.

I'm installing from a USB stick. It's a 2008 Macbook with an aftermarket
SSD that was wiped - not even a partition table. The "erase disk and
install ubuntu" installation method gets all the way past partitioning
and copying files, then fails with "unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda"
as the dialog title, text is "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed.
This is a fatal error."

When running 'sudo grub-install /dev/sda' from a terminal window, the
error is thus:

Installing for i386-pc platform.
grub-install: error: failed to get canonical path of `/cow'.

To add insult to injury, the following dialog is broken; see #1608006.

I haven't successfully gotten grub installed yet.

[Bug 677783] Re: Redshift does not quit upon logout from session

2015-05-18 Thread gmorehou
This is still a problem. Who is the maintainer that can review the
patch(es)? Downgrading to a PPA isn't great.

[Bug 1421059] [NEW] many jitsi crashes related to /usr/lib/jni/libjdic_misc.so: undefined symbol: JAWT_GetAWT

2015-02-11 Thread gmorehou
Public bug reported:

/usr/bin/java: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/jni/libjdic_misc.so:
undefined symbol: JAWT_GetAWT is the common thread between a number of
crashes I've experienced (setting up an existing XMPP account, which is
usable but then crashes the program) and a few other random activities
in the config menu.

It appears there are a lot of crash bugs that are related to a single
problem. See 1306901, 1314538

This is still a problem in 14.04, confirmed on an iMac G5 during install
of Lubuntu from alternate CD.
