[Bug 1788928] Re: psmouse: after sleep/suspend thinkpad touchpad not functional
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1786574 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1786574 If it can help anyone, this is a follow up on my issue. It seems the reason the laptop wouldn't stay suspended was caused by a USB device (even thought there were not any plugged in ..). You can find that using "dmesg | grep -i acpi" and then look into the wakup config using "cat /proc/acpi/wakeup". Then you toggle devices until you find the problematic one using this command, in my case it was "XHC" so: `echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup`. This will not overwrite the file, only toggle the relevant device. When you found the culprit you can make that change permanent using "crontab -e" and adding this line: "@reboot echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup". Otherwise the changes will be gone after next reboot. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1788928 Title: psmouse: after sleep/suspend thinkpad touchpad not functional To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1788928/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 812669] [NEW] Unity's application menu bar accessibility problems
Public bug reported: Description:Ubuntu 11.04 Release:11.04 I was ambiguous about using the bug tracker to report this issue. But since it is really an problem that doesn't seem to have been addressed yet and the post about it on Ubuntu Brainstorm predate 11.04's launch, I've decided to report it as a bug. In Unity the menu bar and title bar of applications are located at the same place and the menu bar is shown only on mouse over. Besides breaking some applications (I had problems with Gvim and VirtualBox), this cause serious UX issues . 1. Hiding window controls when the window is inactive and maximized force the user to focus the window before being able to click one of the three title bar buttons (close, maximize, toggle) or access the application's menu bar. The problem is further annoying when working extensively with multiple monitors. I am aware that this is a side effect of the way Unity works with title bars/menu bars, but it is an accessibility issue nevertheless. 2. The same holds true for window titles, the user have to focus a maximized window to see it's title. Again, when working with multiple monitors the problem is only more evident. A maximized window in a inactive monitor has only a grey title bar that convey no information about the maximized window. This problem could be more easily solved than the first with more subtle rules for maximized window (ex: if maximized and raised, always show the title bar). 3. But above all, hiding the window menu bar cause a serious UX problem. As I couldn’t put it better: > Mystery meat navigation (also known as MMN) is a disparaging term coined in > 1998 by author and web designer Vincent Flanders to describe a visually > attractive but concurrently inefficient, confusing, or abstruse user > interface, usually one that is Internet-based[1]. Such interfaces lack a > user-centered design, emphasizing aesthetic appearance, white space, and the > concealment of relevant information over basic practicality and functionality. > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_meat_navigation 4. When the window is not maximized it's possible access a context menu when right clicking its title bar. However this context menu is not accessible when the window is maximized (nothing happens when the pseudo task/menu bar is right clicked. This breaks user expectations. My suggestion to solve issues 1, 2, 3and probably 4 is the following: introduce an option to have the menu/title bar either merged (like it is out of the box) or separated (old fashion). And if you're kind enough, you could bind a keyboard shortcut to toggle between the two modes. Brainstorm thread: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/27346/ Thanks. However since I updated to 9.04 it happens randomly quite often, most of the time when a lot of CPU is being used. [Bug 348115] [NEW] Sound stop working in Intrepid Ibex
Public bug reported: It rarely stop by itself, if I'm only listening to music it can work for hours. However, most of the time when I come to work in the morning I find out the sound isn't working. Not a single sound will come out of my machine until I either perform a alsa force-reload or reboot. I think I noticed a pattern. First I listen to music on hypem.com, then after a while hit pause and either go to lunch or go home. If a Flash animation is left open and is outputting sound, even if paused, I'm 90% sure to find the sound server crashed when I come back. I get no error messages, just the absence of sound. Some applications, like totem, disable the sound buttons like if it was incapable of accessing the sound server. Another annoying thing, when I force-reload alsa, every application accessing the sound server (even when it doesn't work) crashes and close instantly. Even Firefox can't recover and forget the opened tabs and starts a new session when restarted. I use Ubuntu since Edgy and I never had any sound problems until Pulseaudio was introduced.. I don't know if there is a correlation, but it's suspicious and deadly annoying. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sound stop working in Intrepid Ibex https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/348115 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup
After months of acceptable stability, the problems seems to be coming back. Again my system is locking up on a daily basis. It's the only bug that makes me want to switch from Ubuntu, I'm getting pretty f*cking exasperated. It happens exactly like it use to happen on Gutsy (I'm now on Hardy). I'm working normally with many programs open, then open Firefox, Thunderbird or Open Office (I noticed it happens more often with these..) and while it loads I click somewhere else. Then mouse stop but not instantly, it's like a 2~3 seconds gradual slowdown which leads to a complete system lock. And again, nothing unusual appears in log files. For more infos on my setup, refer to my previous comment: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux- source-2.6.22/+bug/15/comments/55 The only thing that changed is the OS version, I was on Gutsy, now I'm on Hardy (2.6.24-21-generic). -- gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/15 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've peeked in the system logs but did not find anything suspicious.. The bug does not seem to occur alone by itself.. I can reproduce it just by dragging the panel from the top of my right screen to the bottom of my left screen, from there it still works properly, but when I drag it back to the top of my right screen it freeze dead and became unusable. However I've found a way to make it work again.. I just drag it to the left side of my screen, in vertical position. From there the window buttons starts working again and I can drag it back to its original position and it still works.. I've done a tail -f on xession-errors while reproducing the bug, but I got no errors message at all. I have the feeling that it occurs when the panel is transfered from one screen to the other. I know that xinerama is far from optimal and is probably the culprit, but it's the only way I can get the windows to behave "normally" (like not maximizing over both monitors). I dragged it back to the bottom of my first screen, it was still frozen 3. I dragged the panel back to the top of my second screen BUT accidentally dropped it on its left edge .. it started working back .. 4. I dragged it to the top .. and it's still working .. [Bug 271343] [NEW] Gnome panel bugs with secondary monitor
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-panel If I create a new panel on my secondary monitory I can't add applets. At least they don't become visible in the panel, if I click randomly they are actually there, just not visible. If I create it in my primary monitor and then add applets, everything works as expected. But if I drag the panel in my secondary monitor, icons freeze. They're still working, if I click on a window name it will raise it. But if I close the window it won't be removed from window list. Mouse over is broken too, it's really like if the panel becomes a static image. So as soon as the panel is dragged into the secondary monitor, graphics stop to update. [Bug 264748] [NEW] Gnome crash, automatically reboot and lose compiz settings
Public bug reported: I'm not sure which component are involved in this bug .. Anyhow, time to time Gnome (with desktop effect enabled) crashes, become unresponsive to the point where I have to kill Xorg. Sometimes it just reboot by itself. The thing is, when I return to gnome, all my compiz settings are gone. They're back to default. It's really annoying. It occurs at work and at home, at least once a week. My two PC are AMD 64 running Ubuntu Hardy (32bit) with compiz enabled. Both video card are Nvidia. Today I got really tired of it and I decided to scan my system log for something unusual, I found that before the crash occurs, there is lots of process that get killed with a "out of memory" message. It's pretty much unlikely that my systems lacks of memory to run Ubuntu .. both have 4GB of ram. I'm using 2.6.24-19-generic kernel at work and 2.6.24-19-server at home (to get the full 4GB of ram instead of 3.2) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Gnome crash, automatically reboot and lose compiz settings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264748 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 153918] Re: Screens and Graphics Preferences fails to detect updated monitor.
Maybe I did something wrong but I had the same problem when switching my two NEC MultiSync LCD 1850X to two Acer AL1916W. 1. First I shutdowned my computer and made the switch 2. Then I booted and noticed weird resolution glitches and desktop effect didn't work (restricted driver got disabled ?!) 3. I peeked in xorg.conf and found out that the NEC configs were still there 4. I tried to manually change the specs, now the secondary screen didn't work 5. I tried to reconfigure with displayconfig-gtk and restarted X 6. Seemed to work but I had to edit manually xorg.conf to remove virtual mode, which was to big for my screens 7. I enabled restricted drivers and rebooted 8. secondary screen was flashing colors in a psychedelic way 9. reconfigured all over again and managed to get things working 10. Tried to enable desktop effect without success, I get the message "The Composite extension is not available" It took me about 1 hour to change my monitor and it was a real pain in the ass and I still haven't managed to get back desktop effects .. >From a end user POV, there is definitely some usability work to do here. Same problem here, I use Ubuntu Gutsy at work and it drives me crazy. My computer freeze *at least* one or two times a day, when I say freeze it's cold dead freeze. Everything just stop working in a split second, most of the time is when I click to open a document or a folder, or even an email. Only thing to do is hit reset, even keyboard leds won't respond. I run Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic on a AMD Athlon X2 dual core 3800+ with 4 GB of ram (only 3.2 shows up ?) I initially though it was related to Compiz but It doesn't seems to be te case. It's VERY frustrating to be left with no errors whatsoever in logs. This machine ran windows for a year without a glitch, I installed Ubuntu with much pain to get it working right, one week later one of my hard drive failed for no apparent reasons and now the system is less stable than my bi-polar ex-girlfriend. I have a GeForce 8600 GT and I have the same problem with same error message. By default the desktop effect seemed to work when I first compiled the binary drivers, but when I selected "advanced effects" I got an error message "no nvidia card found", so I tried to disable desktop effect but since then I never been able to re-enable it, I always get the no nvidia card message.. As for the restricted drivers manager it worked once on my old pc with my GeForce 7600 (on feisty) but failed to recognize my 8600 (on gutsy). I agree that the initial error message is quite vague as it's obvious that desktop effects have not been enabled, an explanation or a hint on how to resolve this issue would be welcome and more useful. h3 -- When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/92370 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
