[Bug 1788928] Re: psmouse: after sleep/suspend thinkpad touchpad not functional

2021-09-30 Thread h3
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1786574 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1786574

If it can help anyone, this is a follow up on my issue. It seems the
reason the laptop wouldn't stay suspended was caused by a USB device
(even thought there were not any plugged in ..). You can find that using
"dmesg | grep -i acpi" and then look into the wakup config using "cat
/proc/acpi/wakeup".

Then you toggle devices until you find the problematic one using this
command, in my case it was "XHC" so: `echo XHC > /proc/acpi/wakeup`.
This will not overwrite the file, only toggle the relevant device.

When you found the culprit you can make that change permanent using
"crontab -e" and adding this line: "@reboot echo XHC >
/proc/acpi/wakeup". Otherwise the changes will be gone after next
reboot.

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 on an old Lenovo Yoga and none of the workaround
had any effect except adding "psmouse.synaptics_intertouch=0" to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub.

The only problem is that now it wont stay suspended.. It does go under
suspend mode for like 3 seconds and wakes up immediatly, but at least
the trackpad/nub still works.

Using an opt-out strategy on a feature like this is insidious and an
insult to Ubuntu users intelligence.

It's the kind of bullsh*t I'd expect from Microsoft, not Canonical.

[Bug 878820] Re: Window Management, Keyboard shortcut - The grid keybindings are behaving inconsistently

2012-04-04 Thread h3
This still doesn't work in 11.10 .. My co-worker made a fresh install of
12.04 final beta and it still doesn't work. However he managed to make
it work after fiddling in Compiz Config Manager, it seems at this point
it was a key binding conflict.

This issue is really getting painful.

working. I noticed because I used it a million times a day.

With all the updates coming I thought it would be fixed pretty soon ..

[Bug 812669] [NEW] Unity's application menu bar accessibility problems

2011-07-18 Thread h3
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:11.04

I was ambiguous about using the bug tracker to report this issue. But
since it is really an problem that doesn't seem to have been addressed
yet and the post about it on Ubuntu Brainstorm predate 11.04's launch,
I've decided to report it as a bug.

In Unity the menu bar and title bar of applications are located at the
same place and the menu bar is shown only on mouse over.

Besides breaking some applications (I had problems with Gvim and
VirtualBox), this cause serious UX issues .

1. Hiding window controls when the window is inactive and maximized
force the user to focus the window before being able to click one of the
three title bar buttons (close, maximize, toggle) or access the
application's menu bar. The problem is further annoying when working
extensively with multiple monitors. I am aware that this is a side
effect of the way Unity works with title bars/menu bars, but it is an
accessibility issue nevertheless.

2. The same holds true for window titles, the user have to focus a
maximized window to see it's title. Again, when working with multiple
monitors the problem is only more evident. A maximized window in a
inactive monitor has only a grey title bar that convey no information
about the maximized window. This problem could be more easily solved
than the first with more subtle rules for maximized window (ex: if
maximized and raised, always show the title bar).

3. But above all, hiding the window menu bar cause a serious UX problem.
As I couldn’t put it better:

> Mystery meat navigation (also known as MMN) is a disparaging term coined in
> 1998 by author and web designer Vincent Flanders to describe a visually
> attractive but concurrently inefficient, confusing, or abstruse user
> interface, usually one that is Internet-based[1]. Such interfaces lack a
> user-centered design, emphasizing aesthetic appearance, white space, and the
> concealment of relevant information over basic practicality and functionality.
>
> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_meat_navigation

4. When the window is not maximized it's possible access a context menu
when right clicking its title bar. However this context menu is not
accessible when the window is maximized (nothing happens when the pseudo
task/menu bar is right clicked. This breaks user expectations.

My suggestion to solve issues 1, 2, 3and probably 4 is the following:
introduce an option to have the menu/title bar either merged (like it is
out of the box) or separated (old fashion).

And if you're kind enough, you could bind a keyboard shortcut to toggle
between the two modes.

Thanks.

[Bug 730394] Re: Text copied from Empathy can't be pasted in Gnome Terminal

2011-06-06 Thread h3
I run Ubuntu 10.10 and Empathy 2.32.1 and I can confirm that copy/paste
from Empathy is broken in some circumstances.

Whenever I try to copy paste a conversation to Gmail (using Firefox
3.6.17) I'm unable to paste. I have to paste first in gedit and then re-
copy/paste to FF. On the other hand I tested with Google Chrome and it
works fine.

In GNOME Terminal (2.32.0) paste does not work if I use the context menu
-> paste. But it works if I click with the scroll wheel of my mouse or
Shift+Insert.

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card "safely remove drive" kills reader device

2010-11-19 Thread h3
@oriolpont

See my last comment .. reboot did nothing, but shut down the PC and
waiting a little before starting it did the trick.

Now what I don't get is that I did another "Safely remove" by accident,
and it did not kill the internal card reader this time.

Go figure.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 404185 ***

@gionnico

Fixed ? Tell that to my dead card reader.

It worked for *months* without any problems, then I did a "safely remove
hardware" and now it won't work, even after a reboot.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the latest update and the bug is still
there. I believe there is also another duplicate:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/504440?comments=all

I propose to rename the button "safely remove hardware" to "make
hardware unusable", since it's basically what it does.

[Bug 504440] Re: sd card "safely remove drive" kills reader device

2010-11-19 Thread h3
I'm on Ubuntu 10.04 and I have the same problem .. Since I did a "Safely
remove" on my internal card reader it stopped working .. even after
rebooting.

Then I started using my external USB card reader since I needed to keep
working, and after a while I always ended up clicking "Safely remove" ..
a bad Windows habit that sticks..

So one by one I killed my all my ports, now my card reader wont work in
ANY USB ports and rebooting does not resolve the issue at all.

This situation is ridiculous, really.

OK .. turns out X does not crash if I enable the device while running in

Windows finds the tablet as soon as I activate USB on the Wacom, the Wacom
drivers also find the tablet and
is able to configure it.

stylus/pressure/eraser and side buttons works but with some quirks ..
the drawing is really lagging and the touch feature is either really
hard to use or not working properly .. the only gesture I manage to do
is zoom in / zoom out and some scrolling..

I finally got the stylus/eraser working ..

I followed those instructions:

The only difference is that I used the latest drivers version (8.4-4
instead of 8.4-3)

The touch feature and side tablet buttons still don't work and I did not
check if the pressure works yet.

I tried to get it working on Virtualbox, but I had to follow this
tutorial to get USB working:

Now when I enable USB for the Wacom device X crash instantly ..

[Bug 415646] [NEW] compiz settings manager lose configuration when disabling/enabling effects

2009-08-18 Thread h3
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

It's been an annoyance since at least Hardy.. I didn't report at the
time because compiz was newly integrated in the main distribution, so I
thought it would get fixed someday.

But now I'm running Karmic and it's still there.

Steps to reproduce;

 1. Install Compiz Settings Manager
 2. Spend a lot of time configuring Compiz to your taste
 3. Right-Click on the desktop -> Change Desktop Background
 4. Disable the Desktop Effects
 5. Re-enable them
 6. All settings are gone

I know you can export Compiz settings, and that's what I've been doing

[Bug 10550] Re: DVDs with restrictive permissions are unreadable for normal user

2009-07-21 Thread h3
I got the very same problem tonight .. I rented a movie on DVD and as it
happens half the time, it didn't work.

Every time it's the same circus;

1. Encounter a permission problem when trying to read a rented DVD in totem or
VLC
2. Fire Windows on Virtualbox, try with VLC .. half the time it works, if not ..
3. Search the web, find something about CSS drm bullshit or somthing ..
4. Try to install libCSSwhatever or extras packages and find out it don't work
either
5. Remember how I did workaround the last time; open VLC, File -> Open
*DIRECTORY* browse for "VIDEO_TS" in the DVD drive, click "open" and watch
movie.

I'm still not sure if I should blame Ubuntu for not being able to read a
DVD correctly or the movie industry for not being able to write a DVD
properly.

[Bug 342946] Re: intermitten buzzing from speakers using hda-intel alsa on dell mini 9 jaunty netbook remix

2009-05-07 Thread h3
@waspinator

I know cellphones are doing this noise, but it only occur when it's
transmitting or receiving data. Otherwise the sound do not occur.
However yesterday my cellphone battery was dead, the phone would not
even boot and the sound was still occurring frequently .. how's that
possible ?

As I said, before it only happened when the cellphone was transmitting
or receiving, now it occurs *very* often without any transmission at all
or even when there's no cellphone around. At home it's more or less
every minutes and at work a bit less frequent.

Can cellphone towers do this too ? I'm not aware of any towers nearby,
but I can't see what else it could be..

[Bug 342946] Re: intermitten buzzing from speakers using hda-intel alsa on dell mini 9 jaunty netbook remix

2009-05-06 Thread h3
I have this problem with two different (but similar) desktop computers
running Ubuntu 9.04. The problem was present in at least the two
previous major version of Ubuntu, but were much less frequent.

Actually before 9.04 it only seemed to happen a couple of seconds before
I receive a phone call or a SMS on my cellphone. I didn't report the bug
because, well I thought it was somewhat cool to know when your phone is
about to ring.

However since I updated to 9.04 it happens randomly quite often, most of
the time when a lot of CPU is being used.

It's bit like a buzzing morse code, always the same tone, the same
rhythm and it sound exactly the same on both computers and ends up with
a little fade out.

[Bug 264748] Re: Gnome crash, automatically reboot and lose compiz settings

2009-04-08 Thread h3
@Robert Ancell

Well at the time I reported this bug I'm pretty sure I was on 8.04.

Now I'm on 8.10 and the crashes are mostly gone but times to time when
Compiz crash expectingly, I still occasionally lose all my Compiz
preferences. I exported my them into a flat file and reload them when
they vanish, but it's still mildly annoying.

I remember trying to switch from the gconf backend to flat file and it
didn't help much.

I wish I could give you more details..

[Bug 348115] [NEW] Sound stop working in Intrepid Ibex

2009-03-24 Thread h3
Public bug reported:

It rarely stop by itself, if I'm only listening to music it can work for
hours. However, most of the time when I come to work in the morning I
find out the sound isn't working. Not a single sound will come out of my
machine until I either perform a alsa force-reload or reboot.

I think I noticed a pattern.

First I listen to music on hypem.com, then after a while hit pause and
either go to lunch or go home. If a Flash animation is left open and is
outputting sound, even if paused, I'm 90% sure to find the sound server
crashed when I come back.

I get no error messages, just the absence of sound. Some applications,
like totem, disable the sound buttons like if it was incapable of
accessing the sound server.

Another annoying thing, when I force-reload alsa, every application
accessing the sound server (even when it doesn't work) crashes and close
instantly. Even Firefox can't recover and forget the opened tabs and
starts a new session when restarted.

I use Ubuntu since Edgy and I never had any sound problems until
Pulseaudio was introduced.. I don't know if there is a correlation, but
it's suspicious and deadly annoying.

[Bug 157777] Re: gutsy amd64 freeze crash lockup

2008-11-06 Thread h3
After months of acceptable stability, the problems seems to be coming
back.

Again my system is locking up on a daily basis. It's the only bug that
makes me want to switch from Ubuntu, I'm getting pretty f*cking
exasperated.

It happens exactly like it use to happen on Gutsy (I'm now on Hardy).
I'm working normally with many programs open, then open Firefox,
Thunderbird or Open Office (I noticed it happens more often with
these..) and while it loads I click somewhere else. Then mouse stop but
not instantly, it's like a 2~3 seconds gradual slowdown which leads to a
complete system lock.

And again, nothing unusual appears in log files.

For more infos on my setup, refer to my previous comment:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/15/comments/55

The only thing that changed is the OS version, I was on Gutsy, now I'm
on Hardy (2.6.24-21-generic).

> do you get any error in .xsession-errors when you get the bug?

I've peeked in the system logs but did not find anything suspicious..

The bug does not seem to occur alone by itself.. I can reproduce it just by
dragging the panel from the top of my right screen
to the bottom of my left screen, from there it still works properly, but
when I drag it back to the top of my right screen it freeze
dead and became unusable.

However I've found a way to make it work again.. I just drag it to the left
side of my screen, in vertical position. From there
the window buttons starts working again and I can drag it back to its
original position and it still works..

I've done a tail -f on xession-errors while reproducing the bug, but I got
no errors message at all. I have the feeling that it
occurs when the panel is transfered from one screen to the other. I know
that xinerama is far from optimal and is probably
the culprit, but it's the only way I can get the windows to behave
"normally" (like not maximizing over both monitors).

I hope it will help

2008-09-18 Thread h3
Kernel: 2.6.24-19-generic (32bit)
cpu: AMD64 4800
ram: 4G
gc: nVidia Quadro FX 1400
dual monitor setup: gxl, xinerama & twinview

Ok that just got weirder, I don't think it's a problem with the graphic card
redraw. I just did the following:

1. took my panel from the bottom of my first screen and dragged it to the
top of my second screen, the panel "froze"
2. I dragged it back to the bottom of my first screen, it was still frozen
3. I dragged the panel back to the top of my second screen BUT accidentally
dropped it on its left edge .. it started working back ..
4. I dragged it to the top .. and it's still working ..

I'll cross my fingers, but I have strong doubts that it will freeze back
soon enough..

[Bug 271343] [NEW] Gnome panel bugs with secondary monitor

2008-09-17 Thread h3
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

If I create a new panel on my secondary monitory I can't add applets. At
least they don't become visible in the panel, if I click randomly they
are actually there, just not visible.

If I create it in my primary monitor and then add applets, everything
works as expected. But if I drag the panel in my secondary monitor,
icons freeze. They're still working, if I click on a window name it will
raise it. But if I close the window it won't be removed from window
list. Mouse over is broken too, it's really like if the panel becomes a
static image.

So as soon as the panel is dragged into the secondary monitor, graphics
stop to update.

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy with Compiz enabled

[Bug 264748] [NEW] Gnome crash, automatically reboot and lose compiz settings

2008-09-04 Thread h3
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure which component are involved in this bug .. Anyhow, time to
time Gnome (with desktop effect enabled) crashes, become unresponsive to
the point where I have to kill Xorg. Sometimes it just reboot by itself.

The thing is, when I return to gnome, all my compiz settings are gone.
They're back to default.

It's really annoying. It occurs at work and at home, at least once a
week.

My two PC are AMD 64 running Ubuntu Hardy (32bit) with compiz enabled.
Both video card are Nvidia.

Today I got really tired of it and I decided to scan my system log for
something unusual, I found that before the crash
occurs, there is lots of process that get killed with a "out of memory"
message. It's pretty much unlikely that my systems lacks of memory to run
Ubuntu .. both have 4GB of ram.

I'm using 2.6.24-19-generic kernel at work and 2.6.24-19-server at home
(to get the full 4GB of ram instead of 3.2)

[Bug 153918] Re: Screens and Graphics Preferences fails to detect updated monitor.

2008-06-05 Thread h3
Maybe I did something wrong but I had the same problem when switching my
two NEC MultiSync LCD 1850X to two Acer AL1916W.

1. First I shutdowned my computer and made the switch
2. Then I booted and noticed weird resolution glitches and desktop effect
didn't work (restricted driver got disabled ?!)
3. I peeked in xorg.conf and found out that the NEC configs were still there
4. I tried to manually change the specs, now the secondary screen didn't work
5. I tried to reconfigure with displayconfig-gtk and restarted X
6. Seemed to work but I had to edit manually xorg.conf to remove virtual mode,
which was to big for my screens
7. I enabled restricted drivers and rebooted
8. secondary screen was flashing colors in a psychedelic way
9. reconfigured all over again and managed to get things working
10. Tried to enable desktop effect without success, I get the message "The
Composite extension is not available"

It took me about 1 hour to change my monitor and it was a real pain in
the ass and I still haven't managed to get back desktop effects ..

>From a end user POV, there is definitely some usability work to do here.
It's painful to say, but it's nothing comparable to Windows and Mac OSX
experience.

Same problem here, I use Ubuntu Gutsy at work and it drives me crazy.

My computer freeze *at least* one or two times a day, when I say freeze
it's cold dead freeze. Everything just stop working in a split second,
most of the time is when I click to open a document or a folder, or even
an email. Only thing to do is hit reset, even keyboard leds won't
respond.

I run Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) with kernel 2.6.22-14-generic on a AMD Athlon
X2 dual core 3800+ with 4 GB of ram (only 3.2 shows up ?)

I initially though it was related to Compiz but It doesn't seems to be
te case. It's VERY frustrating to be left with no errors whatsoever in
logs.

This machine ran windows for a year without a glitch, I installed Ubuntu
with much pain to get it working right, one week later one of my hard
drive failed for no apparent reasons and now the system is less stable
than my bi-polar ex-girlfriend.

Can we agree that this bug should be flagged as "important" ?

P.S.: if someone need any log just tell me wich and how to get it I will
provide it.

[Bug 103400] Re: compiz freezes x server after screensaver kicks in

2008-03-05 Thread h3
Having the same problem with a Athlon X2 64 with a NVIDIA quadro fx
card.

Everything works fine except when I leave the computer idle for a long
period (+1h). When I come back both screens are white but I can still
move the cursor.

Workaround found:

I change TTY (ctrl+alt+f1) and kill compiz from command line, which is
taking 100% of my CPU. Then I switch back to graphical interface and re-
enable desktop effect..

If someone need more infos on my system just give me the command to
execute, I'll provide the infos.

[Bug 92370] Re: When desktop-effects fails it gives no explanation

2007-08-19 Thread h3
I have a GeForce 8600 GT and I have the same problem with same error
message.

By default the desktop effect seemed to work when I first compiled the binary
drivers,
but when I selected "advanced effects" I got an error message "no nvidia card
found", so I tried to disable desktop effect but since then I never been able
to re-enable it, I always get the no nvidia card message..

As for the restricted drivers manager it worked once on my old pc with
my GeForce 7600 (on feisty) but failed to recognize my 8600 (on gutsy).

I agree that the initial error message is quite vague as it's obvious
that desktop effects have not been enabled, an explanation or a hint on
how to resolve this issue would be welcome and more useful.
