[Bug 1897962] [NEW] Out of Memory Error with Brother DCP-J7720W

2020-09-30 Thread Mick
Public bug reported:

Installed XSane from the repository but when I scan the viewer screen is blank
and if I try to save I get "Error during save: out of memory"
I believe that escl driver in 20.04 sane-backends is a problem and it is
related to https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=962539
sane-backends 1.0.31 should be considered for focal-backports and that if
possible, escl driver could be individually SRU (Stable release update) in
focal-updates.

ppa:sane-project/sane-git fixes the issue.

** Affects: sane-backends (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

[Bug 1568459] Re: unison incompatible with older ubuntu/debian versions

2020-09-02 Thread Mick
This may help.
After upgrading my Desktop from Mint19 to Mint20 I could not get unison
file sync working to my Ubuntu Server. With some help from the guys on
the GitHub issues list I have now fixed it. Apparently unison for
Ubuntu19 and Mint20 are compiled differently, and even though they are
both version 2.48.4 they are compiled with different releases of OCaml,
which makes them incompatible.
This is what I did -
Remove all traces of unison
then run
wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/u/unison/unison_2.48.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
wget
http://mirrors.kernel.org/ubuntu/pool/universe/u/unison/unison-gtk_2.48.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -r unison this removes the old install
sudo dpkg -i unison_2.48.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i unison-gtk_2.48.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-mark hold unison this stops it updating
sudo apt-mark hold unison-gtk

This is not a proper solution it is just a fix, but it did get me out of a hole
:)
Mick

[Bug 1159707] Re: Cinnamon panel / task bar becomes unresponsive to mouse

2017-07-13 Thread Mick
Running Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 64-bit. My system has been running for a
while but today I hit this same problem, the menu would not respond to
the mouse and neither did the toolbar icons.

>From something in an earlier post I changed Nvidea driver and now it all
works again.]

Available drivers are -
nvidea-375 this is the one recommended but I know this causes VirtualBox to
crash the whole machine.
xserver-xorg-video-nouveau this one does not work with Virtual Box
nvidea-304 this is the one I was using
nvidea-340 I have changed to this one and all seems well now

I have no idea what triggered the problem, must be an update today I
guess. Looking at history todays updates were

archdetect-deb (1.117ubuntu2.1) to 1.117ubuntu2.2
libepoxy0 (1.3.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.1) to 1.3.1-1ubuntu0.16.04.2
kpartx (0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.4) to 0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.5
kpartx-boot (0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.4) to 0.5.0+git1.656f8865-5ubuntu2.5

so I guess it was one of these.

[Bug 1593489] [NEW] resolvconf postrm is broken, purge breaks DNS

2016-06-16 Thread Dan Mick
Public bug reported:

apt-get remove resolvconf incorrectly leaves a symlink from
/etc/resolv.conf to ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf. apt-get purge
resolvconf leaves that symlink with no target, so DNS is broken.

The problem is in postrm: it's examining /etc/resolv.conf to see if it's
a link to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf, but it's a relative link to
../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf, so the comparison fails, resulting in the
failures above.

[Bug 1441253] Re: hanging suspend job prevents shutdown

2016-03-20 Thread Mick Clarke
Exact same issue for me also. Dell XPS 15 (9550) running Ubuntu 16.04.

The issue is ONLY reproducible after a suspend. Once the laptop is
suspended UI controls do nothing; from commandline, reboot, halt or
poweroff return the same error:

Failed to execute operation: Transaction is destructive

I haven't tried the -f flag on commandline.

[Bug 722950] Re: ctrl-x does not work in grub-efi

2016-03-02 Thread Dan Mick
This is fixed in the upstream by commit
9e5f70174ec960a0077f20bb74cb9f4da9b57e7b (and a warning removed by
5fcde03bf1e8cf74c186bcef6d705734f2d002c5). Grub also just recently
tagged grub-2.02-beta3 with many more fixes. I think this one is major
enough that, if the risk of a full transition to beta3 is considered
high until more testing is done, then the above two commits should be
pulled in as a patch.

This is a complete disabler for those trying to boot EFI over serial-
redirected console, as it's likely F10 doesn't work, and neither does
^X.

[Bug 1540405] Re: i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-17 Thread Mick Gregg
Joseph, thanks, we can talk to the customer about options to upgrade
kernels. Unfortunately, we can't use ksplice as this kernel is not seen
as LTS in that product.

Again, if there is any specific fix we think is likely to help, that
would be good to know about before trying to arrange downtime.

[Bug 1540405] Re: i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-16 Thread Mick Gregg
Sorry. no, this didn't happen after an upgrade. These machines are not using
ksplice, so we have no auto-updating, and the kernel dates from the last full
redeployment:
Linux 4.2.0-22-generic #27-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 17 22:57:08 UTC 2015
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

These are trusty nodes using the above kernel to avoid bug 1497812.

This is a production customer cloud, so we don't have scope to upgrade a
machine just for testing, unfortunately. Is there a likely fix in the
upgrade you recommend?

As I say, so far we have not seen the issue since setting TSO to off.

[Bug 1540405] [NEW] i40e fails virtual networking

2016-02-01 Thread Mick Gregg
Public bug reported:

With linux-hwe-generic-trusty we see kern.log entries for "TX driver
issue detected, PF reset issued" on a NIC in a bond, followed by the
same interface going down and up again. After this time networking to
virtual machines bridged to that bond fails.

We see either asymmetric traffic, with ARP replies not reaching the VMs,
or no traffic at all to or from VMs.

In this context, these are nova-compute nodes using OpenvSwitch and KVM.

Reloading the i40e module corrects the networking.

Setting TCP Segmentation Offload off on the NICs seems to prevent the PF
reset, and we don't believe we have seen VM networking problems since
doing so.

[Bug 1497812] Re: i40e bug: non physical MAC outbound frames appear as copied back inbound (mirrored)

2015-10-15 Thread Mick Gregg
Using the @jsalisbury kernel from comment#7 (same site as @jjo

stability.

We seen this similarly with i40e-1.2.48, in which cases the module had
to be reloaded (or the machine rebooted) to recover container
networking.

[Bug 1374782] Re: OpenVPN interactively asks for a password in an init script

2015-03-06 Thread Dan Mick
This also affects me, and I don't see any easy workaround. Trusty used
upstream 2.3.2, but turned off enable-systemd; Utopic turns it on, and
that makes openvpn execute systemd-ask-password, but with stdin set to
/dev/null, whcih makes it pretty hard to interact with.

It seems to me that openvpn auth-user-pass mode is broken on Utopic with
no easy workaround.

I ended up rebuilding from source with --enable-systemd=no; that made it
work again.

[Bug 1353803] [NEW] After HWE update for 12.04.4 suggested by ubuntu nvidia grpahics is broken-no video for xserver

2014-08-06 Thread Mick Alvey
Public bug reported:

After update for HWE for hardware compatibility in future because my
hardware would not be supported in future my nvidia graphics driver
would not load and hence no xserver. I contacted nvidia and they are
aware of the problem casued by ubuntu kernel update in 3.13.0. THey
suggested I install the nvidia 304.xx package. so i removed the
nvidia-173 drivers and installed the nvidia-304 package deb. I got a
video back, but now I have lost the password synchronization from
several accounts - spaecifically my admin account and working account.
How do I fix this problem?

Additionally, this should not be happening. not that it will do any good
here, but I must say, I am not ipressed lately with the amount of
updates and security fixes. THis is getting worse than the Microsoft
world. As well, I would not be having to know how to get around on the
command line - very frustrating. Seriously, I have better uses for my
time.

[Bug 1353172] Re: Updated HWE as suggested by support updates and now the NVidea driver 173 will not insert and so no Xserver

2014-08-05 Thread Mick Alvey
This is not package related. This is a kernel issue and the hardware support or
lack thereof... for the new 3.13.0-32-generic kernel supposedly for 12.04.4
LTS. It does not support NVidea drivers apparently. I have seen other various
complaints about the problem.
There is no sense in reporting it as an X package problem, just to have a
package to tie to it. It is a kernel hardware driver problem. The HWE update
does not handle NVidea properly. Please look at this promptly and supply an
updated kernel fix. This is critical!

[Bug 1353228] [NEW] nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 - 12.04.4 to HWE 3.13 - failed kernel module load

2014-08-05 Thread Mick Alvey
Public bug reported:

Upon running the update for HWE for 12.04.4-54 - kernel now loading 3.13
- and nvidia driver not loading becasue of missing symbols and hardware
informaiton in the HWE and kernel. Apparently the HWE does not support
Nvidia dirvers. Please provide a kernel update and a temp workaround to
provide Xserver and graphics capability. My workstation is now really
unusable as everything I do pretty much depends upon a running xserver

thanks for your help, i reloaded everything and then had a thought the disk
was too big, 2 terabyte. So halved it and away we went. So clearly upto and
over 2 teras is not good for the OS.

[Bug 1211757] [NEW] glabels prints extra pages on merge

2013-08-13 Thread Mick Brooks
Public bug reported:

When merging data from a CSV file to print 3 labels, starting at label 9
on the sheet, the labels will print correctly, but will then be followed
by 8 unwanted pages where the 3 labels are repeated in positions 1-3.
I've attached the output.pdf that glabels produces when asked to print
to file for the above scenario.

I've found that if I start at label n on the sheet, the correct page
will be followed by n-1 unwanted pages.

The upstream changelog has an entry that suggests this bug might be
fixed in version 3.0.1:

[Bug 1079941] [NEW] -v version output is broken

2012-11-16 Thread Dan Mick
Public bug reported:

ceph -v output is broken in ceph package version 0.48.2-0ubuntu2. This is
supposed to get built during any make from
git revparse, which is stored in .git_version, which is then processed by
make_version into ceph_ver.h, included in the
sources.

Investigating, it seems as though the source package orig.tar.gz does not
contain the file, whereas what we thought we
delivered to the location in debian/watch does. That file in the source tree
contains

version=3
http://ceph.com/download/ceph-(\d.*)\.tar\.gz

However, I note that when I fetch the quantal source package with 'pull-
lp-source ceph quantal', the debian/watch file in that package points
somewhere else entirely:

version=3
https://github.com/ceph/ceph/tags .*/tarball/v(\d[\d\.]+).* debian
debian/orig-tar.sh

That location appears not to exist anymore (perhaps github reorganized?)
but in any event it's not where we expect the authoritative delivery to
live.

I don't know how or why debian/watch is changed.

** Affects: ceph (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 809221] Re: unable to mount ceph root at boot due to stripping of trailing slashes

2012-08-07 Thread Dan Mick
Seems to me that the filesystem-specific mount and/or the filesystem
module should get the 'device' path unmodified, and deal with it how it
will. (For instance, as noted, nfs mounts can also contain a trailing
path, and nfsserv:/ should work unsurprisingly).

nfs currently works because it doesn't try to validate that '/' exists;
mount.nfs requires a :, and passes on a
potentially-empty path to the kernel mount function. Ceph's kernel module
could accept that as well, but the
fact remains that mountall really should not be removing the trailing /.

drop privs and listen on a high port. (10514)

same. No sound at login, if I try to move the volume slider nothing happens and
ps -ef | grep pulseaudio shows nothing. I have to run pulseaudio --start -D
several times until it finally takes and sound is then available until I log
out and in again. Example:
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
E: [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.
mick@DragonsLair:~$ pulseaudio -D --start
mick@DragonsLair:~$

Same happens if I kill the daemon and try to load it again. This is the
same if the ~/.pulse directory was first deleted. It was working fine
under the previous version. /desktop/gnome/sound/enable_esd is set to
True.

Re: [Bug 829239] Re: Prey does not work when installed from Synaptic or Software Centre

2011-09-07 Thread Mick
Hi,

It just returns

sh: Can't open /usr/lib/prey/prey.sh

I guess that's because I installed from the prey website. As I said in
the bug it just doesn't work when installed from synaptic

Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Cheers
Mick

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Could you please try to run prey from terminal with (you
 may need to use sudo):

 sh /usr/lib/prey/prey.sh --check

The abovecommand will only work if you've installed prey from Ubuntu's
repositories (synaptic/software centre/apt/etc...). Thanks in advance.

[Bug 829239] [NEW] Prey does not work when installed from Synaptic or Software Centre

2011-08-19 Thread Mick
Public bug reported:

I installed prey from Synaptic and also from Software Centre. It
completes without error, but in Applications System Tools there should
be Prey Configurator, but there is not.

On their webpage http://preyproject.com/ there is a download button, but
this download also gave me the same problem. There is a link just below
the download button which opens up a page with downloads for several
different OS's. I used the Ubuntu download link and it then installed
successfully and works fine

I am on Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit

Hope this helps

[Bug 740011] Re: Natty: the driver sp5100_tco prevents PC startup

2011-07-13 Thread mick
Also happens on my HP g61 11.04 and newest kernel (2.6.38-10-generic) with only
the second message appearing.
I have noticed that most people that have this problem tend to have AMD
processors and ATI graphics cards.
Perhaps the problem is related to this (sorry if this is either obvious or
stupid, I am quite new to the linux framework)

[Bug 719202] Re: Display blanks then login screen appears

2011-03-02 Thread Mick
A few days ago my machine booted into terminal mode, could not get xorg
to run at all. Eventually fixed by deleting /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

I have just tried to recreate the display blanking problem that I
reported here and I cannot recreate it any more.

Not sure where that leaves us, let me know if I can provide any further
info.

Thanks
Mick

[Bug 719202] [NEW] Display blanks then login screen appears

2011-02-15 Thread Mick
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have experienced this on a couple of different occasions, but I can now
reproduce it at will. When running an application the screen goes blank and
then the login screen appears again, I can then login as normal.
I first saw it when running KMyMoney, but now see it when running Eric with
python code, I can reproduce it with Eric.
