It's with a touchpad, on a Dell XPS 13 9370 (a pretty well supported laptop on Linux). [Bug 1073114] Re: Online Smart Scopes Do Not Respect User Privacy
See this: Ubuntu Shopping Lens (Scopes) Declared Legal in the UK and Most Likely in the European Union http://m.softpedia.com/ubuntu-shopping-lens-scopes-declared-legal-in-uk- and-most-likely-in-european-union-453843.html http://attheedgeoftime.blogspot.ro/2014/08/ubuntu-shopping-lens-deemed- legal-by-uk.html It seems that the core of the reasonning of the UK Information Commissioner's Office (IOC) reads this way: "In particular, we consider the (first time displayed, and later ‘iconised’) legal notice added by Canonical Ltd to the bottom right corner of the Dash, when Amazon searches were introduced, to have reasonably ensured compliance with the DPA for the introduction of those searches. We also consider Canonical Ltd to have made reasonably available to Ubuntu users suitable information to assist people in limiting searches undertaken, or in removing the feature involved from their installation. " White all due respect, this reasonning seems pretty weak to me, for these 2 reasons: 1) The "magical" legal notice is no longer in the dash (since 13.10) and is now hidden (and still untranslated) in the obscure "Diagnostics" tab, in the "Security and Privacy" panel; 2) I may have missed something but I really don't see where/how "Canonical Ltd to have made reasonably available to Ubuntu users suitable information to assist people in limiting searches undertaken (but I aknowledge that they did the right thing to allow users to remove/switch off the feature involved from their installation). That said, IMHO as a really great FLOSS project, Ubuntu (and its sponsor, Canonical), shoud do more than look for minimal compliance with privacy laws/regulations in some contries/regions. [Bug 1073114] Re: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy
On the basis of EFF recommandations, here the what's need to be done to solve this bug, considering the stagnation/progress/regession observed since Ubuntu 12.10: - Disable "Include online search results" by default -> Nothing has been done. To do. - Explain in detail what Canonical does with search queries and IP addresses, how long it stores them, and in what circumstances it gives them to third parties -> Regression since 13.10, as the untranslated legal notice is more difficut to find. It has been relegated to an obscure "Diagnostics" tab, in the "Security and Privacy" panel, in the System settings, instead of being available at the bottof right corner of the Dash. So, at leat, it needs to be translated. Also, if it has to remain in the"Security and Privacy" panel, it should be in a more properly designated tab. Also, if the online search remains activated by default, there should be some sort of proheminent popup that would ask for user attention, upon first login or first access to the Dash, refering him/her to the legal notice and asking him what he/she wants to do with online search (and related scopes). - Make the Search Results tab of the Privacy settings let users toggle on and off specific online search results, as some users might want Amazon products in their search results, but never anything from Facebook. -> Some progress has been made with 13.10, as now, in adition to be able to disable onlne search, within the "Security and Privacy" panel, users can also deactiate some particular scopes (or sources?), by right cliking on them, in the Dash, and then clicking for deactivation. Now the process is tedious if, as an example, a user only wants 1 or 2 scopes to be activated. One solution could be to include these options in the "Security and Privacy" panel (which would be more coherent, if done in a proper way) with a complete list of the sources, and with some easy and quick way to turn some of them on or off. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073114 Title: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libunity/+bug/1073114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1073114] Re: Shopping Lens Does Not Respect User Privacy
Here is Jono Bacon (Ubuntu Community Manager) comment about the FSF (RMS) statement: http://www.jonobacon.org/2012/12/07/on-richard- stallman-and-ubuntu/ I know this a bug report is not the place to discuss/argue, but I just want to present what is I think the rationale behind the issue at stake with the current bug report (which also explains I think why there is a massive rejection of the way the Amazon search feature has been implemented and why the few reasons given up to now by Canonical and relatives - like Jono - are not calming things). Here's what I wrote as a comment on Jono's blog: Privacy is not just a "deeply personal thing". In law, there is what we* call common and basic "reasonable expectations" in relation to privacy, that may exist in a variety of situations, including when using an operating system. I really doubt that having search data sent to a third party without the user's express authorization could be considered a "reasonable expectation", in the particular context where the search is performed within what is primarily known or viewed by a vast majority of users as a local application/file launcher/searcher (i.e Unity's Dash). I understand that "the goal of the dash in Ubuntu has always been to provide a central place in which you can search and find things that are interesting and relevant to you". But if Ubuntu/Canonical want to outgrow the usual local application/file launcher/searcher paradigm, it has to be really clear about it with users (I doubt that the untranslated legal notice at the bottom left of the Dash is sufficient) and request all necessary users express authorizations. Without specific authorization, these external (online) search features should be off. And the explanation related to the "iterative"nature of the Ubuntu development is not really convincing me. If , really, "privacy is critically important" to Ubuntu/Canonical and is put "forward as a high priority", then privacy should be considered at the root of any project development. It shouldn't be an afterthought, leading to incomplete solutions implemented late in the development cycle. Ubuntu 12.10 is not an alpha or beta version of Ubuntu. It is an official released to my understanding. Finally, it seems to me that it would be so much more productive for Canonical to just say what they intend to do to fix the problem, either with 12.10 or, at least, with Raring (13.04). Obviously, implementing EFF recommendations is probably the right thing to do here. *I'm a lawyer, although not specialized in privacy law, but with a bit of knowledge about these issues.

@Benjamin: Bonjour! - I don't mind the headline change (and being polite!), but I do think that, in some ways, Ubuntu/Canonical may be *required* to introduce some changes (those recommended by EFF and maybe others) regarding the shopping lens (and probably other online search lenses) it they really want, as they claim, to respect users privacy... and even maybe some regional/national laws. [Bug 1073114] Re: Users privacy not respected - Implementation of EFF recommandations required
@cm-t: I would agree that this bug might affect all other online-search lenses, i,e, unity-scope-video-remote and unity-scope-musicstores (if I understand well, these are the only 2 other supported lenses that perform online search for now). I'm not so sure however how to link the current report to these packages. Opening 2 new bug reports seems redundant... Should we understand that the French CNIL advice was supporting the EFF one? I wouldn't be surprised if in Canada (Québec), where I live (bonjour en passant!), our own privacy protection agencies/laws (there is one at federal level and another at provincial level) would have similar requirement to the recommendations coming from EFF... To get an idea on the Canadian privacy agency's concerns in relation with online services, see this: http://www.priv.gc.ca/resource/topic-sujet/owp- pvplrsf/index_e.asp#fs No doubt that it's really important for Ubuntu/Canonical to respect high standards/universally recognized rules on privacy protection when implementing new services or delivering new products, in order to avoid any clash with various national requirements. In that respect, the legal notice that has been introduced in the dash (bottom right corner) in a hurry at the end of the 12.10 development cycle seems kind of weak to me (for one thing and as far as I can see, it's not even localized/translated!). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1073114 Title: Users privacy not respected - Implementation of EFF recommandations required To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-lens-shopping/+bug/1073114/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

To be more precise, here are the main problems to be fixed according to EFF: - Disable "Include online search results" by default. - Explain in detail what Canonical does with search queries and IP addresses, how long it stores them, and in what circumstances it gives them to third parties. - Make the Search Results tab of the Privacy settings let users toggle on and off specific online search results, as some users might want Amazon products in their search results, but never anything from Facebook. [Bug 909488] Re: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide
As a "normal user" ans usually happy camper, I came across this report when wondering what was the difference between installing Dropbox from Ubuntu repositories (nautilus-dropbox package) than from the package available on Dropbox website/repository. Now that I understand, I do share many of the point of views expressed here: if, for whatever reasons, Ubuntu can't provide a reliable Dropbox package with auto-updating, then it should abstain from it and let Dropbox (the company) do the work itself. No need to dive into obscure philosophical/ethical consideration here, the solution is just not to provide an unreliable package. On a side note: providing the Skype package in the partner repositories is nice, as this package will presumably auto-update Skype shortly when a new versions appears (or at least, upon upgrading Ubuntu to a newer version). If the same can't be done for Dropbox, then it doesn't make sense to go this route. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/909488 Title: nautilus-dropbox forbids dropbox's non-free binaries to replace themselves by properly installing dropbox system-wide To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-dropbox/+bug/909488/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I confirm Michael (#11) observation: disabling auto-mute in alsamixer solves the problem, with official kernel (actually 3.5.0-17-generic). [Bug 1066353] [NEW] No sound after suspend (Ubuntu 12.10 64bit)
Public bug reported: Since the beginning of my experience with 12.10 beta, I have repeated problems with the sound. [Bug 986208] Re: Compiz does not remember user preferences upon system restart
I think I've found the way to have the scale preferences set with CCSM sticky across sessions with a freshly 12.10 installation. Basically, this is the same workaround than the one suggested in comment #3, except that we have to use Gsettings, with dconf-editor, instead of Gconf with gconf-editor (it seems that in 12.10, Unity and Compiz have migrated from Gconf to Gsettings). So here's how it works: First, install dconf-editor: sudo apt-get install dconf-tools Than, start dconf-editor and find this key: org/compiz/profiles/unity Finally, just put the "scale" value completely at the end of the list of the plugins (be careful to put the coma and spaces exactly at the right place). Of course, this is just a workaround and this bug still needs to be fixed. The basic and obvious way would be to make sure that users CCSM custom settings are always respected, unless they are really incompatible with Unity settings. But since Ubuntu/Unity already provide scale functions with the super-w key combo, the best way would be to integrate some scale activation by mouse/button within Unity itself, i.e. maybe in relation with the Launcher. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986208 Title: Compiz does not remember user preferences upon system restart To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/compiz/+bug/986208/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks
Thanks Michael for your input. As my own problem is already fixed, my question was in relation with the purpose of this bug report, i.e. to fix things for the future and for other users. So here's my proposition: if we want users to have a no-fuss experience when trying to access SAMBA shares (as everyone knows, SAMBA is quite common on various NAS, etc.) that may mean that the samba package should be installed by default (so, available on installation media, or at least, be installed upon first update). [Bug 356022] Re: unable to mount or browse samba networks
I'm on Precise 12.04 and was somewhat experiencing the same issue, i.e getting the "failed to retrieve shares list from server" when trying to reach SAMBA shares on my NAS (WD MyBook World Edition). I've read and try a lot of things on this issue (among others, rearranging the order of the "name resolve" string in smb.conf), but nothing worked. Even the smbtree command was unsuccessful, as it was not retrieving any shares list. But, I was able to connect to a share by issuing the nautilus smb:// command. A the end of the day, the only thing that solved all this was to install the samba package, which was not installed by default. Since then, retrieving and connecting SAMBA shares through Nautilus work without a glitch. [Bug 903422] Re: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices
Once again, just to put the story straight: Android 4/ICS is ***still*** supporting USB mass storage (UMS). The only thing is that some devices (such as Galaxy Nexus) have only one partition (i.e. without SD card) and thus, can't rely on UMS since this would lockup the whole system. These devices have to rely on other widely known protocol like mtp and ptp which are usually supported under Linux for years. On this explanation, see: http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/21/ice-cream- sandwich-supports-usb-mass-storage-after-all-galaxy-n/ So basically, the only thing to resolve here IMHO, is to have the Galaxy Nexus well recognized by Ubuntu as a mtp/ptp device (and, if possible, to provide complete file access with these protocols). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/903422 Title: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/903422/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I don't think (I may be wrong) that there is a magic way to detect all Android devices, as there are so many manufacturers and products... Anyway, most Android phones will continue to rely on USB mass storage, as Android 4/ICS still support this mode when there is an SD card inserted in the phone (which is usually the case). Up to now, Galaxy Nexus is an exception, with very few others so far. ** Attachment added: "udev-db-mtp.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/903422/+attachment/2680650/+files/udev-db-mtp.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/903422 Title: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/udev/+bug/903422/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 903422] Re: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices
I'm on Ubuntu 11.10, using a Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Android 4/ICS. What I observe is that connecting the GN in ptp mode behaves almost exactly as it if it was connect as a USB mass storage device, i.e., automount, icon (camera) appearing in the Launcher & Nautilus, possibility to create/move/delete any kind of files/folders, etc. Even with Banshee (and Rhythmbox I presume), if you put an ".is_audio_player" at the root, the GN will me recognized as a Media/Audio player! Anyway, I guess that if the mtp connection was providing the same kind of access as ptp (by default, GN is set to connect as mtp device), it would be easier for novice users to have their GN phone works with Ubuntu. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/903422 Title: Mount / Provide access to Android 4 (Ice Cream Sandwich, ICS) MTP devices To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/903422/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 882022] Re: On/Off switch should be Ubuntu-themed
Well, if you let the gnome-shell.css at it's original state, it may not use Cantarell font since it is not installed, but it will not use the specific Ubuntu font (see: http://font.ubuntu.com/) used by official Ubuntu themes (Ambiance & Radiance). I suppose it uses a more or less arbitraty determined Cantarell equivalent. So, in order to have GS include this particular Ubuntu theming aspect, a specific reference to ubuntu font (just by replacing "cantarell" by "ubuntu" in gnome-shell.css) is required. And believe me (or just try it!), it makes a significant impact in terms of integration. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882022 Title: Gnome-shell needs some Ubuntu design/theming integration (font, on-off swithch, etc.) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/882022/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 882022] [NEW] Gnome-shell needs some Ubuntu design/theming integration
Public bug reported: This is obviously a wish report, not a bug report per se. Since Ubuntu Oneiric, gnome-shell can easily be installed and it works pretty well, coexisting peacefully with Unity. With this option easily available, a significant number of Ubuntu users may prefer using gnome- shell instead of Unity, for whatever reasons. That's why I think some efforts should be put to better integrate gnome-shell within the regular Ubuntu design/theming framework. IMHO, what is missing right now is some slight adjustments, like these ones: - Using Ubuntu font, instead of Canterella - Using Ubuntu orange color for on/off buttons, instead of blue Many (if not all) of these adjustments could be done quite easily (I did it myself) with just a line modification in /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme /gnome-shell.css or by adjusting color in files within the directory /usr/share/gnome-shell/theme On the other hand, I don't think that we need a complete and specific Ambiance or Radiance gnome-shell theme (like this one: http://half- left.deviantart.com/art/GNOME-Shell-Ubuntu-Ambience-210264151) . I think (I may be wrong) that the vast majority of users will prefer to experience the real gnome-shell experience, with just some bits of Ubuntu integration. So, in short, my wish is that gnome-shell receives some Ubuntu love! We don't have to create a "Gubuntu" derived distro for this (or a fork, like UGR: http://ugr.teampr0xy.net/) , we just have to make sure that some integration work is done at the gnome-shell packaging stage. (I guess that to support this work, the Ubuntu/gnome-shell community could unite around the Ubuntu GNOME3 team? See: https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team) Thanks. ** Affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: design theme wish -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882022 Title: Gnome-shell needs some Ubuntu design/theming integration To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/882022/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
