[Bug 154870] ubuntu asks for login for non-password protected windows share

2007-10-20 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. Boot Gutsy LiveCD
2. Select "Placess::Connect to server..."
3. Select service "Windows share", enter LAN ip of a Windows machine and enter
the name of an existing non-password protected network share on that machine.
4. Ubuntu creates a shortcut on the desktop, click it.
5. Ubuntu asks for username/password even though the network share is
non-password protected.
6. No profit.

I don't know how the low levels of SAMBA work, but this kind of thing typically
just work out of the box for Windows to Windows networking and it needs to work
out of the box for Ubuntu to Windows networking too.

[Bug 154867] The "Report bug" button/link is sometimes hard to reach inside launchpad

2007-10-20 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. Go to the bugs section in launchpad
2. Click your login name in the top right corner
3. You see a list of bugs relating to your account
4. Now you want to file a new bug report, but it's really hard because there is
no link that says "Report new bug" in the top-left list of actions. To be able
to file a new bug report the user has to go through a whole bunch of screens;
basically go back to the launchpad root, then go into the "bugs" section etc..

Suggested fix: just add "report new bug" to th top left list of "actions". this
would make launchpad a lot easier and speedier to use.

[Bug 154862] Bad error message when connecting to Windows network share fails

2007-10-20 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

On a home network without any windows domain server or any special DNS
server config (just normal DHCP and public internet DNS). Do this:

1. Boot Gutsy Live CD
2. Select "Places::Connect to Server..."
3. Fill in service type "Windows share" and enter hostname (not IP, and note
that the hostname should be a LAN hostname only, not something that can resolve
over the global internet DNS, and this is a clean liveCD so this hostname is
not known by unbuntu resolve.conf etc) to windows machine plus a network share
name on that machine (which should exist).
4. A shortcut to this share is created on the desktop. Click it to open the
share folder.
5. Ubuntu will now show the error message saying that "Folder contents cannot
be displayed". This error message is the most generic error I have ever seen,
it gives you absolutely NO IDEA about what went wrong and you have no way of
fixing it.

As it turned out, I tried this "Connect to server..." thing again and
instead of using the hostname of the windows machine I entered it's IP
address (the 192.168... local LAN addr) and then it asks for a user/pass
so that got me past the problem I had above).

This bug is about the bad (too generic) error message. It's absolutely
crucial that you provide more information (maybe a little "DETAILS" link
could be added).

[Bug 151663] second instance of program launches in the exact same position as the first instance

2007-10-11 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. install gutsy and apt-get to get latest
2. launch calculator using application :: accessories
3. launch another instance of calculator, it appears in the exact same place as
the first instance

this is a problem because many non-geeks would have a hard time
understanding that there is now two instances of calculator running.
windows have fixed this problem by adding N pixels (50 or so) to the
left and top properties (the x,y window position coordinates) of the
second instance.

some people talk about how compiz can bring additional visual cues and
improve accessibility and usability. however, a simple change like this
can go along way to help users understand the effects of their commands.

of course, it's nice to have the first instance load in the exact same
place every time (these initial coordinates are most likely loaded from
gconf which is great). therefore, this bug report applies only to the
second instance of an application.

** Summary changed:

** Description changed:

- I got this DVD disc from my brother. When I plug it in totem starts but
- it shows only a black screen (no error message). I can press play and
- then it shows a black screen and ticks a few seconds, but no movie ever
- starts. Movie works fine in VLC with menus and all. If I start totem
+ When I insert a DVD; totem starts and fails to play it (which is a
+ separate but) and it shows only a black screen (no error message). This
+ bug is about the lack of a good error message. If I start totem
separately and manually choose "open disc XYZ" in the movie menu of
- totem then it complains about codec instead (which makes a little more
- sense but still I'd rather if it just said "proprietary/restricted is
- bad" and then let me download the codecs?).

[Bug 144277] mouse sucks in linux

2007-09-23 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. find a desktop background which has lots of detail (this is not strictly
necessary but it helps *a lot* to understand this problem).
2. set this desktop background on both a windows machine and a linux machine
3. decide on two points (call them A and B) near the middle of the screen, a
couple of centrimeters a part

on each machine, do these steps:
3. move the mouse cursor to point A
4. very fast now; press the left mouse button and move the mouse to point B

on the windows machine you will have a selection ranging from point A all the
way over to point B
on the linux machine you will have a selection ranging from a point between A
and B all the way over to point B

clearly, there is some kind of latency issue for the mouse down event on
the linux machine. it takes a few milli (or maybe nano) seconds for the
linux machine to process the mouse down and for this reason the mouse
cursor is moved a little bit before linux receives the mouse down event
and starts the actual selection.

this problem also affects actions such as resizing windows really fast.
as long as you are very slow (e.g for old people) the mouse works just
great in linux.

Relevant comments from other people on IRC:
support for that codec is incomplete
 i.e., patch_conexant.c doesn't contain the necessary pins/nids for it

[Bug 140833] Re: Gutsy compiz won't enable on intel 965 laptop after 9/18/07 updates

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
My gfx-card is "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family: GMA X3100".
I had compiz running with some very minor glitches (reflection plugin
didnt work for instance). The cube worked though, as did all the window
switcher animations and so on. After this latest synaptic upgrade I
cannot use desktop effects at all (same error as other people; check
"extra" and get msg saying "cannot enabled").

Also, the workaround doesn't really work for me. I tried both commenting
out the intel 965 ID directly in /usr/bin/compiz and then I tried the
config file. Both yield the same result (a sigsegv/core dump; see
below). This did not happen before for me, as I said... cube was running
very smooth.

[Bug 144126] Re: ubuntu fails to enable desktop effects

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 140833 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/140833

I don't see anything obviously "bad" in "dmesg" or "/var/log/messages".
Also, the same error happens when I try to enable "normal" effects. My
graphics card is a "Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (display
adapter): GMA X3100". Inside /etc/X11/xorg.conf it says:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller"
Driver "intel"
BusID "PCI:0:2:0"

[Bug 144126] ubuntu fails to enable desktop effects

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

Since gutsy tribe5 I have been able to use the compiz effects (both the
normal ubuntu default effects and the fancy stuff like desktop cube
etc). Everything have been working fine before, but after the last
synaptic upgrade none of the desktop effects work anymore. When I went
into preferences::appearance I can see "extra effects" is checked. Then
I tried checking effects "none" instead. Now if I try to switch back to
"extra" I get this error message saying "cannot enable compiz" and it
doesn't say anything about why it doesn't work.

See attached screenshot for error details... remember, compiz with cube
and everything worked perfectly on this machine just a week ago.

[Bug 144058] Re: playing two songs at the same time doesn't work with snd_hda_intel

But adding an understandable error message will still help the end-
users. OSS will probably be around for a while longer (albeit as a
backup/legacy package).

[Bug 144058] Re: playing two songs at the same time doesn't work with snd_hda_intel

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
If I do this:

1. switch to OSS as output in XMMS and then close it
2. launch totem with some song (which starts to play)
3. launch XMMS

Then I get a much better experience because XMMS actually displays an
error message telling me "Please check that no other program is blocking
the soundcard".

Maybe the error handling in Totem could be improved so that it can
detect if OSS is using the soundcard. This way a really good error
message could be displayed to the user.

fact play the two files simultaneously (and hear both).

[Bug 144058] playing two songs at the same time doesn't work with snd_hda_intel

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

In latest gutsy as of 22 sept 2007:

1. Start some song in xmms
2. Start some other song in Totem
3. No sound is heard from the Totem player

My sound card is presented in Vista as "Realtek High Definition Audio".
When I run alsamixer it says card="HDA Intel" chipset="Realtek ALC268".

I'd be happy to provide output for any command such as lspci etc.

[Bug 141655] Re: Kernel Upgrades kill sound

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
I ran into the exact same experience this morning when I received the
kernel update to 2.6.22-12-generic. I also have an HDA Intel sound card
(my card is presented as "Realtek High Definition Audio" in Windows
Vista) but ALSA mixer usually says card="hda intel" and chipset="realtek
ALC268".

To fix my sound I used this command "sudo apt-get --reinstall install
libasound2 libasound2-dev" and then rebooting.

I suspect, it would be possible to make some kind of relatively simple
change to the standard Gutsy configuration to prevent this from
happening. Such a change might also fix the fact that sound is broken by
default on HDA Intel / Realtek cards.

[Bug 144035] Re: A bug

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
Ralf, I'm not sure this is correct. I tried opening this page. I did not
have flash at this point but I could see the HTML parts correctly (a
girl and a guy with some text next to it). Then I clicked "Install
missing plugins" and flash (commerical verison) was installed. The page
automatically reloaded and now the Flash part rendered correctly. The
problem though, was the the HTML part had disappeared. A big white area
near the embedded Flash control seems to overlay/cover the HTML part.

I also tried this using latest Firefox on Windows and here everything
renders just fine, even with Flash installed. So this problem does not
affect all Firefox versions only Firefox on Ubuntu.

Feel free to close this bug again if you are sure that this bug is still
invalid depsite the information I gave above.

[Bug 144042] firefox plugin-install says "plugin installed" for non-completed installation

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. install latest gutsy and apt-get update it
2. launch firefox and point it to http://www.velox.com.br/ (or any other site
which has flash content)
3. SCREENSHOT_1: a yellow bar appears with "Install missing plugins..." button
4. SCREENSHOT_2: user can choose either commcerial flash or free gnash version
(press next to get the default choice which is the commercial version)
5. SCREENSHOT_3: Firefox plugin installer then asks, "do you really want to
install it?". (press the NO button here)
6. SCREENSHOT_4: Firefox plugin installer then says "plugin successfully
installed" (even though the installation was aborted).

I expected it to say "installation aborted" or something instead.

[Bug 144020] Re: hda-intel sound stopped working after synaptic upgrade

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
I was able to fix this problem after talking to some friendly people on
IRC. What I did was basically:

  sudo apt-get --reinstall install libasound2 libasound2-dev

and then I rebooted (still using the new kernel in GRUB menu).
Apparently that was enough to fix it.

[Bug 144020] hda-intel sound stopped working after synaptic upgrade

2007-09-22 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

Using an updated gutsy. I had just gotten my hda-intel sound to work,
then I got some synaptic upgrades which I installed and then it said I
needed to reboot. Once I had rebooted the machine my sound didn't work
anymore. I noticed that in this last synaptic upgrade I got a new kernel
(the new one was 2.6.22-12-generic).

In gnome volume control under "file::change device" I used to see two
devices (they were "HDA Intel" and "RealTek ALC268"). I had "HDA Intel"
selected when the sound worked. After the upgrade+reboot I only see one
alternative in this menu and it says "Realtek ID 268" (not quite the
same as before, small difference there).

Also, before I could launch "alsamixer" but now it just says "alsamixer:
function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device" and fails to
start.

I have seen some really weird messages in "dmesg" which I think is
related to this (see bottom of the attached file).

[Bug 141581] all tooltip popups show up as block boxes

2007-09-21 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I've been using gutsy since tribe 3, apt-getting each day, and I never
had any problems with the tooltip popups before. After last update; now
all my tooltips show up as saolid black boxes (maybe it's black text on
black background, not sure). In the same update you fixed a bunch of
other bugs relating to my graphics card though.

Steps to repro:

1. Open "Places" menu
2. Hover mouse over the "Home holder" menu item
3. A solid black box appears instead of a popup tooltip

[Bug 141313] fullscreen "open arena" stutters when screensaver preview dialog is open

2007-09-20 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. do "apt-get install openarena"
2. play open arena for a while (in fullscreen) and notice the FSP is quite good
3. close open arena and open system::preferences::screensaver
4. select screensaver "busy spheres"
5. launch open arena again (still fullscreen)
6. the game stutters/lags to the point that it's unplayable

This bug may or may not repro on machines with other non-intel graphics cards
(I only tried on one machine).
I have a Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family (display adapter) called
"GMA X3100" in this machine.

[Bug 136692] Re: Sound doesnt work with "Realtek High Definition Audio" card

2007-09-17 Thread mnemo
I just tried installing xmms and play an .ogg file. I can see the song
title scroll by, the length of the song is correct and the seconds are
ticking and even the equalizer is making waves. Basically, it looks like
it's playing with mute but I have checked very carefully and I don't
think it's in mute mode.

I've also tried downloading ALSA 1.0.14 (latest stable as of today), I
compiled and installed it, reboot and still nothing (exact same
symptoms).

[Bug 140541] wired usb mouse stops working on reboot

2007-09-17 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I'm running a Gutsy T5 installed to HDD (which was updated in synaptic a
couple of hours ago). For this computer (it's a laptop)I have an USB
wired mouse (it's a Microsoft IntelliExplorer 3.0 mouse).

Every time I reboot my Ubuntu the mouse stops working (the touchpad on
the actual laptop still works though. What I typically do is that I
disconnect the USB mouse and then reconnect it again. This always fixed
the problem right away.

I'd be happy to provide any information you need to debug this problem.
Here's the kernel version from uname -a for starters:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ uname -a
Linux gutsyT5 2.6.22-11-generic #1 SMP Fri Sep 7 05:07:05 GMT 2007 i686

[Bug 140008] Re: Uncomfortable keybinding in synaptic

2007-09-16 Thread mnemo
Yes exactly, whatever you do here you will probably be breaking some
"convention". But it would at least be simple to avoid the worst
possible scenario (which happened to me) where the installation is
partially aborted (and sort of corrupted depending on package
dependencies). Just adding some kind of confirmation dialog would go
along way in helping the user not accidentally do something bad.

[Bug 140008] Uncomfortable keybinding in synaptic

2007-09-16 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

In GUI applications CTRL-C is conventionally/typically associated with the
"Copy" command (as in copy-paste).
In CLI applications CTRL-C is conventionally/typically associated wit hthe
"Abort" command (as in abort current command/program).

Inside the Synaptic package manager (which is, of course, a GUI
application) there is a special progress form which as an embedded
console in it. Within this embedded console one can see all the messages
printed during the installation process for each individual package.
Further, it's possible to select text inside this console. Now, comes
the question: What is the most intuitive thing to do when the user
presses CTRL-C while viewing this form?

1) Copy the current text to clipboard?
2) Abort the installation of the current package and continue with the next one?
3) Abort the entire installation process?

The current answer is 2) but I'm not sure that's the least confusing or
best choice.

Basically, what just happened to me was that I selected some text inside
this console and pressed CTRL-C. This way I was able to do this partial
installation (some random package which was current installation was
aborted etc).

This was a bad user experience for me.

Suggested ways of fixing this (might be better way of course):

1) Show a dialog box asking of the user really wants the abort the installation
of the package currently being installed.
2) Make CTRL-C copy the selected text instead.
3) Make CTRL-C do nothing.

[Bug 138730] opening the attached valid jpg in "eye of gnome" causes crash

2007-09-10 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I have this jpg files which comes unmodified from a Nikon D80 camera.
When I open it on "Eye of GNOME" the image viewer crashes (using Ubuntu
Gutsy Tribe5). I have reported this bug to the EOG team and Claudio
Saavedra checked-in a fix for it 2007-09-10 02:58 UTC. I hope you will
be able to get this fix into Ubuntu in time for Gutsy.

[Bug 137608] Re: gcc is broken in Gutsy Tribe5 directly after installation+upgrade

2007-09-09 Thread mnemo
ok sry, I won't do that in the future.I don't mean to be annoying, I
just really feel some more thought should go into this bug. Do you guys
understand why I think that a non-usable gcc is worse than no gcc at
all?

[Bug 137608] Re: gcc is broken in Gutsy Tribe5 directly after installation+upgrade

2007-09-08 Thread mnemo
Many people check if gcc is installed by typing "gcc", if you need to
have a bare bone non-usable gcc by default, then don't put it in the
path at least. This will give users a more intuitive experience, i.e.
"oh, it looks like gcc is not installed so thus I have install it"
instead of "seems like gcc is installed but apparently it's not working,
I better go online and see if someone else had this problem before etc".

Installing a non-usable gcc is practically begging for trouble... what
if Microsoft installed a Wordpad icon which crashed Wordpad by default.
No way they could get away with that.

[Bug 138276] Changing desktop effects setting moves all windows to the first virtual desktop/workspace

2007-09-08 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. Open a window in the first virtual desktop / workspace
2. Open a window in the second virtual desktop / workspace
3. Switch from "normal" desktop effects to "none" inside
system::preferences::appearance
4. Now both windows are in the first virtual desktop / workspace; this is very
very annoying if you have like 40-50 windows open in 4 virtual desktops /

[Bug 131722] Re: [gutsy] gnome-dbg cannot be installed because of virtual dependencies

2007-09-08 Thread mnemo
I just got this on a fresh install of Gutsy Tribe 5:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop/eog/eog/trunk$ sudo apt-get install gnome-dbg
[sudo] password for mnemo:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

[Bug 137816] Re: Color in "ls" output is eaten by "more"

2007-09-07 Thread mnemo
Maybe this is natural for a Linux old timer but to be honest, I find it
pretty unintuitive that you get color in a normal ls but no color when
you enable pagination? I'd like to see this "fixed" but if you don't
agree; that's fine by me (I modified my .bashrc as you suggested so it
works for me now).

[Bug 137608] gcc is broken in Gutsy Tribe5 directly after installation+upgrade

2007-09-05 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I just installed Gutsy tribe 5 to the harddrive. I press reload and mark
all updates in synaptic, wait like 20 minutes for it to finish (no
errors). Then I started a terminal, used nano to create the simplest
possible program test.c like this:

int main()
{
  return 0;
}

Then I saved and in terminal I invoked "gcc test.c", which fails with
the following error message:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/Desktop/eog/eog-2.18.2$ gcc test.c
/usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory

[Bug 137592] Ubuntu installer forward button is enabled, should be disabled

Public bug reported:

In the Ubuntu installer, if you specify a hostname for your computer
containing an underscore (which is illegal); the installer does show a
red warning icon but you can still press "Forward". When you have filled
in invalid/illegal data it should not be possible to press "Forward"
button at all, that button should be disabled.

Another noteworthy thing is that when I first tried to create the
screenshot I tried saving it to the desktop and that didn't work (which

[Bug 137364] Synaptic upgrade all fails due to dependency problems

2007-09-04 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

1. Boot Gutsy Tribe 5 Live CD
2. (I changed to swedish keyboard layout and activated the "Fish" gnome panel
applet but I'm pretty sure these steps are not necessary to repro this bug).
3. Open "System :: Administration :: Synaptic Package Manager"
4. Press Reload and wait a while
5. Press "Mark All Upgrades".
6. After like 3-4 minutes I get an error message saying that these packages has
dependency problems:

[Bug 136692] Sound doesnt work

2007-09-01 Thread mnemo
Public bug reported:

I just booted Gutsy Tribe 5 and the sound doesnt work. It didnt work
before or anything though. Basically, if I double click "Experience
Ubuntu.ogg" in the example files the video player will just shutdown
automatically before any videos is shown (no error message). When I try
the "Ubuntu sax.ogg" file it says it can`t be opened and it also says
"No application suitable for automatic installation is available for
handling this kind of file". No ogg player is started after this error
and no sound is played.

After this I went into sound preferences and tried pressing "test" button for
"sound events" using HDA Generic, and ALSA, and ESD and OSS. None of them work.
Basically all of them exception ESD will showing a "Testing..." dialog but I
hear no sound. With the ESD one I get a error message which says I should
report a bug to GNOME (which I did). URL for gnome bug is here:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=472721

The error message I got when trying ESD as audio was the following:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Internal GStreamer error: state change failed. Please file a
bug at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=GStreamer

In Windows Vista it says my sound card is "Realtek High Definition Audio". And
it works in Windows so its not broken. The machine is a HP Pavilion 6525sc.

I`d be happy to post output from stuff like lspci or whatever, just ask
for whatever you need below.

If Debian doesn't have it, is there some other way to include it into
