[Bug 88340] [feisty] x server wont start after upgrade

2007-02-27 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

I had a dist-upgrade to feisty a few days ago, and today update-manager
asked me to do another upgrade in order to be able to install more
updates and I agreed. Upgrade went all right and I was asked to
reboot... but after reboot, the splash-screen shows up and when X is
about to be started I get a blue screen with lots of funny signs and the
message:

"Failed to start the X server (your graphical interface). It is likely that is
not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose
the problem?"
I choose to view the output and it says:
-some version info (X Window System 7.2.0 as of 2007/01/22, kernel
2.6.20-9-386#2)
-some more info
-(WW) fglrx: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:2:0:1) found
FATAL: Error running install command for fglrx (EE) fglrx(0): GART is not
initialized, disabling DRI
-some errors stating /dev/wacom cannot be opened, no such file or directory
-Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'

after that I can view "detailled output" that states basically the same
in a more lengthy manner. after that I am informed that X server will be
disabled and I should restart it after "(some completely broken text
telling something about gdm config)".

after that I am taken to a screen

[Bug 90631] Re: imwheel causes heavy load

this bug seems to be xgl specific as i was not able to reproduce it
using xorg-xserver ever since. happens quite often using xgl, though.

[Bug 90528] network monitor applet - cryptic message

2007-03-07 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

My NoteBook has integrated wireless-lan support that can be en/disabled
via a hardware button. If I choose gnome-panel applet Network Monitor
(not quite sure about the name, it is "Netzwerküberwachung 2.12.0" in
German, but there is absolutely no way to find out the English name) to
monitor the wirless connection everything is fine. However if I disable
wireless lan and left click the panel icon then, I get a message with no
caption and only a close button:

"Bitte kontaktieren Sie Ihren Systemadministrator, um folgende Probleme zu
lösen:
SIOCGIFFLAGS-Fehler: No such device" (Please contact your System Administrator
to solve the following problem: ...)

I don't think that's the ideal message in this case...

[Bug 90631] imwheel causes heavy load

2007-03-08 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: imwheel

since recently imwheel causes really heavy system load occassionally.
most of the time everything works all right, but for no obvious reason
the sysem becomes slower and slower... it takes for about a minute to
open a terminal then and top shows that imwheel is the misbehaving
program... killing imwheel makes the system usable again (special mouse
buttons wont work of course)

only thing i changed about my system configuration lately is that i use
xgl now (dont know if this is anyhow related with the problem).

[Bug 85776] Re: [apport] gnome-panel crashed with SIGSEGV on package installation, valgrind log required

2007-02-18 Thread nailor
gnome-panel crashed during installation of today's dist-updates and
asked me to report a bug... i agreed, chose to upload the complete log
and was taken to:

file:///home/nailor/%22https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
panel/+filebug/8hXXDuuk1kH3ZlC0FfbYNTcPY1s?field.title=%5Bapport%5D

this file does not exist, of course and even removing the invalid prefix
does not help really.

additionally, gnome-panel crashed two more times after i tried to submit
the bug, but it seems to be running fine right now...

[Bug 134136] changes to metadata cause deletion of id3-tags

2007-08-22 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

When editing one (or mutliple) files metadata (right click one/multiple
songs in the library and change some of the values) the changes are
displayed correctly within rhythmbox (so they are properly stored
somewhere (internal database?)) but any id3-tags attached to the file
will be deleted. (check using "id3v2 -l *" or mediaplayer of choice).

expected behavior:
either: store the changed values to some internal database and leave the
mp3-file untouched
or (preferred): write back the changed values to the id3-tags and leave
unaltered values unchanged

actual behavior:
changed values are stored somewhere but the id3-tags are deleted

bad thing about actual behavior:
possible (and probable) data loss

I just found out myself after some more digging through some more (banshee)
bugs. Anyways, Thanks for your reply!
I can view and edit the tags using Quod Libet (Ex Falso respectively) and some
other programs, however it's not too good that there seems some real-world
software that has problems displaying the tags created using rhythmbox...

[Bug 148454] Re: console-kit-deamon spawns too many threads

2008-05-06 Thread nailor
(i am the original reporter) original bug report was, that i thought
htop shows incorrect data (as ps and top did not show the processes). it
became clear, that this is not the case, as the processes ARE running.

htop is (at least a little bit) unusable showing that many spam threads.
but one can hide them by setting the "hide userland threads" within
htop. on the other hand i still wonder if it is necessary for a little
tool like console-kit-deamon to launch a full-blown thread for every
single console that could theoretically exist. but that is probably a
seperate bug.

for now i am ok with the fact that htop does not show incorrect data and
have showing userland threads disabled, just as it is default with ps
and top.

[Bug 225242] Re: Rhythmbox sound is crackling (snapping noises) when opening maximazina minimazing ... windows and programs or when performing small tasks

rhythmbox stops to play music for an instant when i minimize or maximize

error. on the contrary, if i produce load (running 3 instances of
glxgears), the original problem seems to disappear...

[Bug 15442] Re: panels change their position between logins

2008-05-25 Thread nailor
i created a workaround based on a suggestion found in the gnome
bugtracker:

1) find out how your panels are called. its the last part of the strings you
get if you run:
gconftool-2 --all-dirs /apps/panel/toplevels

2) run the following script. pass top/bottom/left/right and the names of
the panels as arguments. the panel mentioned first will be to the edge
of the screen.

[Bug 235253] [NEW] rename on delete, possibly causing invalid paths

2008-05-27 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

i split bug 235045 in two parts, one being:

hardy introduces a new trash-system. if you move a file with an
incredibly long path (just under max path length) into trash you cannot
empty the trash. a message tells "Error removing file: Directory not
empty". debian shows the same bug, but presents a "path too long, could
not rename file" message, suggesting that the files is about to be
renamed before deletion and this fails.

removing the file from command line works as expected. my installation
of hardy moved the trash from .Trash to .local/share/Trash however...

to get a file for testing do:
$ for i in `seq 1 1000`; do mkdir Desktop; cd Desktop; done

expected behavior is: empty the trash. delete the file. dont rename it, but
recover from failure.
workaround is: display a decent error message, telling something helpful.

[Bug 235256] [NEW] dragging Desktop from Places to Desktop fails

2008-05-27 Thread nailor
Public bug reported:

i split bug 235045 in two parts, one being:

in hardy, if you drag the "Desktop" entry from the "Places" menu and drop it to
your Desktop nasty things happen. nautilus happily starts to copy files without
caring for endless recursion too much. this leads either to:
- loads of junk on your desktop until disk is full (if loads of data on desktop)
- an amazingly long error dialog saying that dir "Desktop" could not be
created, plus your desktop as a fractal repeating itself over and over again
until max. filename length is reached (if no/few data on desktop)

expected behavior: ask me what I really want to do, offering senseful
things like "link here/create launcher" or "copy here (avoid recursion)"
or "oops... nothing, really"

[Bug 154207] Re: Wired internet connection does not start at boot.

2008-05-10 Thread nailor
i want to confirm this bug.
i have a 32-bit desktop pc with a D-Link DFE-550TX/FX wired network card. i
used to be connected when i logged in (either into gnome or even on plain
console). since gutsy (and with hardy, too) i have to log into gnome, click the
network-applet and select "wired network" everything works fine then.
this problem is not a driver problem as the connections works out of the box if
i click the button manually. it is reproducable with gutsy and hardy live-cds,
so it is nothing i misconfigured manually. it used to work from dapper to
edgy... :(
any further information required?

[Bug 15442] Re: panels change their position between logins

2008-05-11 Thread nailor
i can confirm this happens and annoys me. is there any chance that it
will be fixed anytime soon?

workaround seems to be to switch all the buttons on the affected panels,
as the "bad ordering" at least seems to be stable. this might eventually
result in the same changes as adam Adam Jeżewski workaround but does not
include any "advanced techniques"...
