[Bug 744451] [NEW] Needs automount support
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: schroot Feature request with code for implementation of feature. Background. Automount doesn't work properly with bind mounts. Starting automount within a schroot does not work as expected. As automount map scripts may be updating iptables, running the actual automount under a schroot may be a poor idea anyways. And other users have struggled to get automount to work within schroot, I wrote a setup.d to handle automount with a schroot. Attached is a script that handles those needs. Script handles setup-start and setup-stop for persistant named schroots. Naming conventions may need to be tidied up. Documentation needs to be provided. [Bug 720911] Re: Cannot boot Feb 16th natty-server-powerpc.iso on pSeries mod 520
Jeremy, Apport requires linux and a shell to be running. Because the install/powerpc64/vmlinux is a shared object instead of an executable object, yaboot declares it to be an invalid object and I can't get past yaboot. The results from the 2011Feb23 natty-alternate-powerpc.iso boot: expert-powerpc64 Please wait, loading kernel... /install/powerpc64/vmlinux: Not a valid ELF image And examining /install/powerpc64/vmlinux /tmp/mnt/install/powerpc64/vmlinux: ELF 64-bit MSB shared object, 64-bit PowerPC or cisco 7500, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped I'm fairly certain the version of yaboot on the CD image doesn't support loading shared objects. Problem was reproduceable with 2.6.33-020633rc5-generic and 2.6.32-02063206-generic. xorg-edge added to the mix lead to X not starting at all. Purged packages from PPA and then reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and system revered to normal lock behavior upon starting a GL app. Problem goes away with an Option "DRI" "Off" in xorg.conf, but GL is somewhat unusable. -- X locks after selecting AntSpotlight in Screensaver Preferences https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/512859 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

However, as they are two prominent gnome applications and at the same version as gnome-session, they should be speaking the same session management protocol. Until they do, it should be documented as a known issue for any distribution that ships gnome 2.24 or later. By documenting it as a known issue I and other users can evaluate whether to stay with ubuntu 8.04, migrate to KDE, or migrate back to 1990 vintange .xinitrc and .xsession files. With non-gnome applications that use the old session management protocol (IE KDE apps, firefox), I would fully expect for a bug report to be flagged as a defect. Until the developers of gnome-terminal and nautilus either eat the gnome 2.24 session management dogfood, or publicly declare that they won't eat the current session management dogfood, it is a technical defect in those applications. In the meantime, it would help that the separate issues 1) Current gnome-session does not support the legacy protocol. 2) Current gnome applications do not support the current session-protocol. If #2 is successfully addressed, there is the opportunity for the new session protocol to become the standard making #1 a non-issue. -- Chris Dukes "In cynicism she's about 35" -- Terry Pratchett's "Hog Father" -- gnome-terminal does not honor new gnome session protocol https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/333603 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 333603] [NEW] gnome-terminal does not honor new gnome session protocol
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-terminal This is almost certainly an upstream bug. This is not a duplicate of 249373. However, this was found while checking to see if 249373 still appeared in jaunty alpha 4. When Gnome moved to their new session protocol for the version of gnome shipped in intrepid, it was to be expected that applications such as gnome-terminal and nautilus would be delayed in actually making use of the new session protocol. However, at this point in time that is not the case. On a fresh install of jaunty alpha 4 1) Open gnome-terminal 2) run gnome-session-save 3) Logout 4) Log back in again does not produce the expected result that the gnome-terminal window is opened on the next login. A retry of 1) Open gnome-terminal 2) Open places->Home Folder 3) System->Preferences->Sessions->Options 3.1) Click automatically remember running applications when logging out 3.2) Click on remember currently running applications. 4) Close 5) Restart 6) Log in again also does not produce the expected results of the gnome-terminal and nautilus window being open upon the next login. This bug is to note that gnome-terminal and nautilus do not abide by the new gnome session management protocol. It would be appreciated if this upstream bug would be noted in the Known Issues section of http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha4 as issues with fglrx and xorg are noted. gnome-terminal is 2.25.5-0ubuntu2 nautilus is 2.25.4-0ubuntu1 Thanks, Chris Dukes ** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-terminal does not honor new gnome session protocol https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/333603 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well, there's a fix, but at this point it would be a mess. Revert to 2.22.x GNOME. Upgrade to 2.24.x GNOME when either 1) gnome-session is able to properly handle the legacy session protocol. (Preferable, breaks the fewest apps). 2) The new protocol is adopted by KDE as well and a significant number of apps support the new protocol. (Acceptable, but can lead to a few annoyances). 3) A significant portion of gnome-core 2.24.x supports the new protocol. Then there is politeness. Include in /usr/share/doc/gnome-session a file indicating that GNOME upstream broke backwards compatibility with the old session management protocol and why it was considered a good idea for ubuntu to upgrade anyways. Being able to have applications automatically start up when I log in where I want them has been a standard part of my computing experience for 18 years now. Being able to do that without having to drag out 'vi' has been part of my experience for 7 or 8 years now. -- Chris Dukes "In cynicism she's about 35" -- Terry Pratchett's "Hog Father" -- gnome session does not start window manager nor restores the previous session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249373 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well this effect could be achieved better through the use of debconf, but > honestly, too many > prompts by debconf isn't pretty, and should be kept to a minimum. People use uswsusp either because 1) It's legacy on a box that was upgraded from hardy to intrepid where uswsusp was installed for whatever reason. (How I encountered this). 2) They followed feisty or gutsy vintage instructions. 3) Their hardware does not work properly with the kernel sleep and hibernate modules for pm-utils. #1 and #2 could probably withstand applying the rolled up newspaper treatment to the user. #3 indicates attempting to conceal a defect in the pm-utils package and MAYBE it's worthwhile to report the defect in pm-utils. Right now the crux of the pm-utils defect is that it assumes that the module for hibernate should also be the module for sleep. On debian this makes sense as uswsusp provides both hibernate and sleep. This is a side effect of the revision of the pm-utils code to be more modular. Upstream should be notified of the problem in logic prior to distributing a fix for intrepid. (I apologize for switching between sleep and suspend... I'm trying to maintain the same inconsistancy as the pm-utils modules). > > And also, I agree that if we don't have s2ram even built in the uswsusp > package, then we should at > least have a separate package with just s2ram in it. Assuming s2ram is the right solution. At this point in the game, intrepid is alpha. The prescribed configuration is pm-utils without uswsusp. If pm-utils fails on suspend or hibernate with uswsusp on your hardware, the ubuntu developers need to know. If you installed uswsusp to resolve a hibernate problem and uswsusp did, maybe the fix is to change the logic in pm-utils instead of bringing back s2ram. If the logic on pm-utils is improved to separate the configured module for sleep from module for hibernate, the long term solution might be for pm-utils to provide suspend and hibernate blacklists, uswsusp to provide suspend and hibernate blacklists, and tuxonice to provide suspend and hibernate blacklists and for pm-is-supported to provide a --verbose or --recommends flag that indicates which module is being used for suspend, hibernate, or suspend-hybrid, whether it was hard set or determined from absence from blacklists, and if it's blacklisted the next priority package. -- Chris Dukes "In cynicism she's about 35" -- Terry Pratchett's "Hog Father" -- suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Which could then be managed through debconf for uswsusp. Re: [Bug 267141] Re: suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2
Looking at this more closely, yes my suggested patch disables pm-utils use of uswsusp on ubuntu, unless someone installed the debian uswsusp package. However, the current behavior is to disable the use of suspend when ubuntu uswsusp is installed. The root of this problem appears to be duplication of the check_suspend and check_hibernate functions between modules.d/*, pm-is-supported, and pm-utils when our SLEEP_MODULE does not have to be the same as our hibernate module. My thoughts without code are. 1) the functions for each module should be uniquely named based on the module. module.d/uswsusp's check_suspend should be uswsusp_check_suspend 2) pm-utils should source all files in modules.d/* 3) pm-utils should have something like a checkit() and doit() functions something like checkit() { local rc=1 for module in $modules; do ${module}_check_$1 rc=$? [ "$rc" == 0 ] && break done return $rc } doit() { checkit $1; rc=$? [ "$rc" == 0 ] && ${module}_check_$1 } But that needs to be floated upstream -- Chris Dukes "In cynicism she's about 35" -- Terry Pratchett's "Hog Father" -- suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/267141 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 249373] Re: gnome session does not start window manager nor restores the previous session
Sebatien, Would you be kind enough to point us to the mailing list or WIKI that discusses these upstream issues? Per the August 8th changelog entry within the gnome-session source indicates this was fixed. Traffic on the desktop-devel-list is somewhat sparse after the initial proposal to revamp gnome-session to dbus instead of xsmp. Traffic to gnome-list concerning the problem seems to be 2.22 oriented. Nothing is mentioned in the Gnome 2.24 showstopper review. A quick review of the desktop files generated for gnome-terminal indicate that gnome-terminal does not currently have AutostartCondition nor X-GNOME-Autostart-*. Reading through the proposal thread http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2008-June/msg00210.html indicates that xsmp was completely dropped in favor of the new session protocol with no concern over legacy apps, including core gnome apps such as gnome-terminal This is not "known upstream issues." This is "This will never work for legacy applications." A warning of some sort in /usr/share/doc/gnome-session directing annoyed users to the guilty parties would have been appreciated. -- gnome session does not start window manager nor restores the previous session https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/249373 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 274055] [NEW] gnome-session-save doesn't actually save the session.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session I have noticed this new behavior since upgrading from hardy to intrepid. [Bug 264311] Re: pm-utils stoped working in Intrepid
Works on a T61 with some fixing. Fixes have been forwarded on to another pm-utils thread along with a patch. A few things I've found. 1) gnome-power-manager's determination as to whether or not a system may suspend or hibernate appears to eventually depend on pm-is-supported --suspend and pm-is-supported --hibernate. 'sh -x /usr/bin/pm-is-supported {--suspend,--hibernate}; echo $?'can give some indication as to what it is doing. 2) The SLEEP_MODE=auto leads to an incorrect test for suspend if uswsusp is installed. Either remove uswsusp, or change pm-functions to have it check for s2ram instead of s2disk for uswsusp mode. 3) The straight kernel mode suspend has been a crap shoot for me. Yesterday my T61 was happier with s2ram from debian sid's uswsusp-0.8-1 rebuilt on intrepid. This morning that lead to network-manager not being able to recognize the return of the network. 4) Once you fix your system so that pm-is-supported reports accurately and behaves correctly, you will need to have dbus reload its information. 5) My system is back to logout and switchuser on the logout app, and suspend on the shutdown app. -- pm-utils stoped working in Intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/264311 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 267141] Re: suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2
The problem appears when uswsusp is installed because of an incorrect test for the use of uswsusp for suspend for SLEEP_MODE=auto. This is what ships in /usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions # Try userspace software suspend if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2disk ; then SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp" fi This is what should ship # Try userspace software suspend if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2ram ; then SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp" fi The following patch to 10-sleep-mdule-auto-detection.patch appears to resolve the problem --- pm-utils-1.1.2.4/debian/patches/10-sleep-module-auto-detection.patch.orig 2008-09-18 13:58:46.0 -0400 +++ pm-utils-1.1.2.4/debian/patches/10-sleep-module-auto-detection.patch 2008-09-18 11:43:16.0 -0400 @@ -20,7 +20,7 @@ + SLEEP_MODULE="kernel" + + # Try userspace software suspend -+ if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2disk ; then ++ if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2ram ; then + SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp" + fi + However... My thinkpad T61 appears to now get upset with kernel suspend. So I built debian sid's uswsup-0.8-1 which provides s2ram. And everything appears to be happy now.
