It doesn't appear to break with ubuntu 13.04 with KDE as the desktop
environment and relatively current patches.

Close it.

[Bug 744451] Re: Needs automount support

2012-01-01 Thread pakraticus
Chroot remains the least painful way for me to use i386 debs on an amd64 system.
Here is 21automount tidied up for natty. It should just automagically work for
autofs users.
Hopefully it doesn't blow things up for non-autofs users.

[Bug 744451] [NEW] Needs automount support

2011-03-28 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: schroot

Feature request with code for implementation of feature.

Background.
Automount doesn't work properly with bind mounts.
Starting automount within a schroot does not work as expected.
As automount map scripts may be updating iptables, running the actual automount
under a schroot may be a poor idea anyways.
And other users have struggled to get automount to work within schroot, I wrote
a setup.d to handle automount with a schroot.
Attached is a script that handles those needs.
Script handles setup-start and setup-stop for persistant named schroots.
Naming conventions may need to be tidied up. Documentation needs to be
provided.

Thanks,
Chris Dukes

[Bug 720911] Re: Cannot boot Feb 16th natty-server-powerpc.iso on pSeries mod 520

2011-02-23 Thread pakraticus
Jeremy,

Apport requires linux and a shell to be running.
Because the install/powerpc64/vmlinux is a shared object instead of an
executable object, yaboot declares it to be an invalid object and I can't get
past yaboot.

The results from the 2011Feb23 natty-alternate-powerpc.iso

boot: expert-powerpc64
Please wait, loading kernel...
/install/powerpc64/vmlinux: Not a valid ELF image

And examining /install/powerpc64/vmlinux
/tmp/mnt/install/powerpc64/vmlinux: ELF 64-bit MSB shared object, 64-bit
PowerPC or cisco 7500, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped

I'm fairly certain the version of yaboot on the CD image doesn't support
loading shared objects.

Also, kernel mainline is useless at this point unless someone wants to
post detailed instructions on how build a powerpc install CD from a
Debian chroot.

[Bug 720911] [NEW] Cannot boot Feb 16th natty-server-powerpc.iso on pSeries mod 520

2011-02-17 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

This server has successfully booted /install/powerpc64/vmlinux from ubuntu
10.04 and 10.10 (Only to be thwarted by lack of veth and vscsi support (Bug
712188).
In seeing if the problem has been resolved in natty yet, I pulled the February
16th daily ISO build.

yaboot starts successfully.
Then I have the following failure.

boot: expert-powerpc64
Please wait, loading kernel...
/install/powerpc64/vmlinux: Not a valid ELF image

It would appear that the creation of vmlinux was slightly botched.

2011-02-02 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

Attempted to install ubuntu on an lpar on a pSeries 520 with vtopt virtual
cdrom to vscsi harddrive (and of course veth ethernet).
Attempted both ubuntu-10.10-alternate-powerpc.iso and
ubuntu-10.04-server-powerpc.iso

yaboot could boot the kernel and the installer started fine. However the
installer was unable to find the cdrom.
RHEL6-ppc4 could install fine on this same LPAR.
Examining lsmod output, ibmveth and ibmvscsic were present on the RHEL
installation.
Upon extracting the contents of linux-image-2.6.35-22-powerpc64-smp on an intel
system, I found that the relevant kernel modules were not present.

Per discussion on #ubuntu-powerpc with cjwatson.
Please enable CONFIG_IBMVETH and CONFIG_SCSI_IBMVSCSI on powerpc.
add ibmveth to debian.master/d-i/modules-powerpc/nic-modules

Thanks,

Some history and quirks.

1) This system has had the virtual disk swapped to SCSI and back to
virtio.

2) grub-pc postinst fails after a switch from SCSI to virtio with cannot find
/dev/disk/by-id/
(There is *NO* /dev/disk/by-id with virtio)

3) After purging grub-pc and reinstalling it, the postinst can no longer
find a disk where grub should be installed.

4) grub-install --recheck /dev/vda works just fine

Thoughts.
1) udev persistent storage rules probably need to match the [vs]d*[!0-9]
wildmat instead of sd*[!0-9].
2) Until udev is fixed, it would be pleasant if grub-pc.postinst would fallback
to /dev/disk/by-uuid.
I think this does it.
available_ids()
{
  local id path diskby

  if [ "$cached_available_ids" ]; then
echo "$cached_available_ids"
return
  fi

for diskby in /dev/disk/by-id /dev/disk/by-uuid; do
[ -d "$diskby" ] && break
  done
  cached_available_ids="$(
for path in "$diskby"/* ; do
  [ -e "$path" ] || continue
  printf '%s %s\n' "$path" "$(readlink -f "$path")"
done | sort -k2 -s -u | cut -d' ' -f1
  )"
  echo "$cached_available_ids"
}
3) Yes, I know testing is a pain, but it's probably worth checking that install
works with kvm with all three possible ways of providing disk.

2010-04-08 Thread pakraticus
Chris Rogers,
The following is my current kludge around. An xorg.conf only containing.

Section "Device"
  Identifier "my-self-configured-device"
  Driver "intel"
 Option "DRI" "Off"
EndSection

GL apps still work, but are painfully slow, but it beats not working at
all. The above kludge was actually derived from the troubleshooting
documentation.

At this point in time I am seeing the system crash/lock to the affected
system is no longer on the network

The problem happens with both 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu2~gomyhr1~clipsolids and
2:2.9.1-3ubuntu1 on 2.6.32-19-generic.

If someone wouldn't mind reminding me how to setup a serial console for
debugging this kind of annoyance I'll gladly collect as much debug
information as upstream wants.

My two cents of things to do before Lucid ships are
1) Prominently include in the release notes that xserver-xorg-video-intel is
broken.
2) Prominently include in the release notes the work around xorg.conf.
3) Repeat #1 and #2 in a recognizeably named file in
/usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-video-intel along with this bug tracking number and
upstream's bug tracking number.

If someone is feeling very creative, try having the crash hooks install that
stub xorg.conf and reboot the system.

On the bright side, it spits back to a "Low graphics mode" dialog.
But after disabling DRI in xorg.conf, X still won't restart without a reboot

[Bug 526009] [NEW] krb5-utils kinit will not auth against AIX's dce secd

2010-02-22 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

We use DCE on AIX to provide our Kerberos5 KDCs.
This configuration has worked fine for quite a while with heimdal-clients
providing kinit and openssh-client has been able to successfully GSSAPI
authenticate.

Since the 1.8 alpha version released on February 18th, ssh fails with "Cannot
find ticket for requested realm." Kinit, as provided from krb5-user fails
with
kinit: KDC has no support for encryption type while getting initial credentials

This makes kerberos unuseable in my environment.

For now the machine has been reverted to 1.7 beta 3 as grabbed from
karmic.

[Bug 512859] Re: X locks after selecting AntSpotlight in Screensaver Preferences

2010-01-26 Thread pakraticus
Problem was reproduceable with 2.6.33-020633rc5-generic and
2.6.32-02063206-generic.
xorg-edge added to the mix lead to X not starting at all. Purged packages from
PPA and then reinstalled ubuntu-desktop and system revered to normal lock
behavior upon starting a GL app.

Problem goes away with an Option "DRI" "Off" in xorg.conf, but GL is
somewhat unusable.

[Bug 366339] [NEW] gnome-terminal does not save information on multiple windows/tabs open

2009-04-24 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

More headaches from the 2008 decision to change the session management
protocols...

Fortunately, upstream has fixed this in gnome-terminal 2.26.1.
Unfortunately, the launchpad integration patches from the current version don't
apply cleanly to 2.26.1.
Unfortunately gnome-terminal 2.26.1 isn't included in Jaunty yet :-).

A build of gnome-terminal 2.26.1 on jaunty beta with everything else
gnome left at 2.26.0 worked fine and as expected until jaunty rc issues
with xserver-xorg kept me from having a visible display under KVM with
-vga std and -vga vmware.

1) $ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

2) $ apt-cache policy gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal:
  Installed: 2.26.0-0ubuntu2

  Version table:
 *** 2.26.0-0ubuntu2 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3) gnome-terminal to remember I had more than one window open after setting
"Remember settings on logout" in startup applications.
4) One gnome-terminal window opened.
Thanks,
Chris Dukes

for gedit.
Let me know if you want me to open another one, or wait until there is a
final status on 552387.

There's also a bug with metacity not saving window position that
Vincent Untz is aware of, but there doesn't seem to be a number for it yet.
I'd go digging for it, but going through window manager bugs tends to
raise my blood pressure a bit much.

2.25.92-0ubuntu2 gnome-session
2.25.91-0ubuntu2 gnome-terminal

gnome-terminal still doesn't remember that I have multiple open when
I logout. Time to dust off the bug I put in that gnome-terminal
and nautilus still can't be arsed to speak the new protocol.

I'm not thrilled with the prompting on gedit, but my specific complaint
looks more like a gedit bug. But as long as gnome-terminal doesn't
start prompting or nvi doesn't start prompting, I don't care...

 click remember currently running application.
Start a gnome-terminal

log in again.
gnome-terminal starts

Okay, good.

ctrl-shift-n within the new gnome-terminal to open a second one.

For giggles,

So, we're back to the other bug I just recently opened.

The underlying cause is that the two application still speak the
old session management protocol.
However, as they are two prominent gnome applications and at the same
version as gnome-session, they should be speaking the same session
management protocol.
Until they do, it should be documented as a known issue for any
distribution that ships gnome 2.24 or later.
By documenting it as a known issue I and other users can
evaluate whether to stay with ubuntu 8.04, migrate to KDE, or
migrate back to 1990 vintange .xinitrc and .xsession files.

With non-gnome applications that use the old session management protocol (IE
KDE apps, firefox), I would fully expect for a bug report to be flagged
as a defect.

Until the developers of gnome-terminal and nautilus either eat the
gnome 2.24 session management dogfood, or publicly declare that
they won't eat the current session management dogfood, it is a
technical defect in those applications.
In the meantime, it would help that the separate issues

1) Current gnome-session does not support the legacy protocol.
2) Current gnome applications do not support the current session-protocol.

If #2 is successfully addressed, there is the opportunity for the
new session protocol to become the standard making #1 a non-issue.

[Bug 333603] [NEW] gnome-terminal does not honor new gnome session protocol

2009-02-23 Thread pakraticus
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-terminal

This is almost certainly an upstream bug.
This is not a duplicate of 249373.

However, this was found while checking to see if 249373 still appeared in
jaunty alpha 4.
When Gnome moved to their new session protocol for the version of gnome shipped
in intrepid, it was to be expected that applications such as gnome-terminal and
nautilus would be delayed in actually making use of the new session protocol.
However, at this point in time that is not the case.
On a fresh install of jaunty alpha 4
1) Open gnome-terminal
2) run gnome-session-save
3) Logout
4) Log back in again
does not produce the expected result that the gnome-terminal window is opened
on the next login.
A retry of
1) Open gnome-terminal
2) Open places->Home Folder
3) System->Preferences->Sessions->Options
3.1) Click automatically remember running applications when logging out
3.2) Click on remember currently running applications.
4) Close
5) Restart
6) Log in again
also does not produce the expected results of the gnome-terminal and nautilus
window being open upon the next login.

This bug is to note that gnome-terminal and nautilus do not abide by the
new gnome session management protocol.

It would be appreciated if this upstream bug would be noted in the Known Issues
section of
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/jaunty/alpha4 as issues with fglrx and xorg are
noted.

gnome-terminal is 2.25.5-0ubuntu2
nautilus is 2.25.4-0ubuntu1
Thanks,
Chris Dukes

Upstream is well aware of it.

The only reason this was reported was because Intrepid added the spiffy

Complaining to the ubuntu bug tracker about a serious defect in
upstream gnome won't get anything fixed.

However, you might want to complain that there is no mention of
the gnome 2.24.x design problem mentioned in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes

As for the bug with upstream...
Start following
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=552387

I strongly suspect that Sebastien is already tracking this upstream
bug and will apply the fixes from upstream as soon as they are available.

Hopefully Gnome upstream will have a fix shortly after the 30th.
Otherwise, hopefully Gnome upstream will fix it by April :-).

the new session protocol has each app that supports it
(Which as far as I can tell are the apps in gnome-session and nothing else)
directs each application to store session information in gconf2.

Backwards compatibility still remains on the todo list.

Well, there's a fix, but at this point it would be a mess.
Revert to 2.22.x GNOME. Upgrade to 2.24.x GNOME when either
1) gnome-session is able to properly handle the legacy session protocol.
(Preferable, breaks the fewest apps).
2) The new protocol is adopted by KDE as well and a significant number of
apps support the new protocol.
(Acceptable, but can lead to a few annoyances).
3) A significant portion of gnome-core 2.24.x supports the new protocol.

Then there is politeness. Include in /usr/share/doc/gnome-session
a file indicating that GNOME upstream broke backwards compatibility
with the old session management protocol and why it was considered a good
idea for ubuntu to upgrade anyways.

Being able to have applications automatically start up when I log in
where I want them has been a standard part of my computing experience
for 18 years now. Being able to do that without having to drag out
'vi' has been part of my experience for 7 or 8 years now.

People use uswsusp either because
1) It's legacy on a box that was upgraded from hardy to intrepid where
uswsusp was installed for whatever reason.
(How I encountered this).
2) They followed feisty or gutsy vintage instructions.
3) Their hardware does not work properly with the kernel sleep and hibernate
modules for pm-utils.

#1 and #2 could probably withstand applying the rolled up newspaper
treatment to the user.

#3 indicates attempting to conceal a defect in the pm-utils package
and MAYBE it's worthwhile to report the defect in pm-utils.

Right now the crux of the pm-utils defect is that it assumes that the
module for hibernate should also be the module for sleep.
On debian this makes sense as uswsusp provides both hibernate and sleep.
This is a side effect of the revision of the pm-utils code to be more
modular.
Upstream should be notified of the problem in logic prior to distributing
a fix for intrepid.
(I apologize for switching between sleep and suspend... I'm trying to
maintain the same inconsistancy as the pm-utils modules).
>
> And also, I agree that if we don't have s2ram even built in the uswsusp

Assuming s2ram is the right solution.
At this point in the game, intrepid is alpha. The prescribed configuration
is pm-utils without uswsusp. If pm-utils fails on suspend or hibernate
with uswsusp on your hardware, the ubuntu developers need to know.

If you installed uswsusp to resolve a hibernate problem and uswsusp
did, maybe the fix is to change the logic in pm-utils instead of
bringing back s2ram.

If the logic on pm-utils is improved to separate the configured module
for sleep from module for hibernate, the long term solution might be for
pm-utils to provide suspend and hibernate blacklists, uswsusp to provide
suspend and hibernate blacklists, and tuxonice to provide suspend and
hibernate blacklists and for pm-is-supported to provide a --verbose
or --recommends flag that indicates which module is being used for
suspend, hibernate, or suspend-hybrid, whether it was hard set
or determined from absence from blacklists, and if it's blacklisted
the next priority package.

Which could be supplied by uswsusp. Which could then be managed
through debconf for uswsusp.
And then there would be grounds to have a uswsusp-s2ram package
that should probably nag and complain that the user really should open
a bug against pm-utils if they must use the package.

Re: [Bug 267141] Re: suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2

2008-09-25 Thread pakraticus

Looking at this more closely, yes my suggested patch disables
pm-utils use of uswsusp on ubuntu, unless someone installed
the debian uswsusp package.

However, the current behavior is to disable the use of suspend when
ubuntu uswsusp is installed.

The root of this problem appears to be duplication of the check_suspend
and check_hibernate functions between modules.d/*, pm-is-supported, and
pm-utils when our SLEEP_MODULE does not have to be the same
as our hibernate module.

My thoughts without code are.
1) the functions for each module should be uniquely named based on the
module.
module.d/uswsusp's check_suspend should be uswsusp_check_suspend
2) pm-utils should source all files in modules.d/*
3) pm-utils should have something like a checkit() and doit() functions
something like
checkit() {
local rc=1
for module in $modules; do
${module}_check_$1
rc=$?
[ "$rc" == 0 ] && break
done
return $rc
}
doit() {
checkit $1; rc=$?
[ "$rc" == 0 ] && ${module}_check_$1
}

But that needs to be floated upstream

[Bug 249373] Re: gnome session does not start window manager nor restores the previous session

2008-09-24 Thread pakraticus
Sebatien,
Would you be kind enough to point us to the mailing list or WIKI that discusses
these upstream issues?

Per the August 8th changelog entry within the gnome-session source indicates
this was fixed.
Traffic on the desktop-devel-list is somewhat sparse after the initial proposal
to revamp gnome-session to dbus instead of xsmp. Traffic to gnome-list
concerning the problem seems to be 2.22 oriented.
Nothing is mentioned in the Gnome 2.24 showstopper review.

A quick review of the desktop files generated for gnome-terminal
indicate that gnome-terminal does not currently have AutostartCondition
nor X-GNOME-Autostart-*.

Reading through the proposal thread
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2008-June/msg00210.html
indicates that xsmp was completely dropped in favor of the new session protocol
with no concern over legacy apps, including core gnome apps such as
gnome-terminal
This is not "known upstream issues." This is "This will never work for legacy
applications." A warning of some sort in /usr/share/doc/gnome-session
directing annoyed users to the guilty parties would have been appreciated.

[Bug 274055] [NEW] gnome-session-save doesn't actually save the session.

[Bug 264311] Re: pm-utils stoped working in Intrepid

2008-09-19 Thread pakraticus
Works on a T61 with some fixing. Fixes have been forwarded on to another
pm-utils thread along with a patch.
A few things I've found.
1) gnome-power-manager's determination as to whether or not a system may
suspend or hibernate appears to eventually depend on pm-is-supported --suspend
and pm-is-supported --hibernate. 'sh -x /usr/bin/pm-is-supported
{--suspend,--hibernate}; echo $?'can give some indication as to what it is
doing.
2) The SLEEP_MODE=auto leads to an incorrect test for suspend if uswsusp is
installed. Either remove uswsusp, or change pm-functions to have it check for
s2ram instead of s2disk for uswsusp mode.
3) The straight kernel mode suspend has been a crap shoot for me. Yesterday my
T61 was happier with s2ram from debian sid's uswsusp-0.8-1 rebuilt on intrepid.
This morning that lead to network-manager not being able to recognize the
return of the network.
4) Once you fix your system so that pm-is-supported reports accurately and
behaves correctly, you will need to have dbus reload its information.
5) My system is back to logout and switchuser on the logout app, and suspend on
the shutdown app.

[Bug 267141] Re: suspend button disappears after pm-utils upgraded to 1.1.2.4-1ubuntu2

2008-09-18 Thread pakraticus
The problem appears when uswsusp is installed because of an incorrect
test for the use of uswsusp for suspend for SLEEP_MODE=auto.

This is what ships in /usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions

# Try userspace software suspend
if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2disk ; then
SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp"
fi

This is what should ship

# Try userspace software suspend
if [ -c /dev/snapshot ] && command_exists s2ram ; then
SLEEP_MODULE="uswsusp"
fi

The following patch to 10-sleep-mdule-auto-detection.patch appears to
resolve the problem

--- pm-utils-1.1.2.4/debian/patches/10-sleep-module-auto-detection.patch.orig
2008-09-18 13:58:46.0 -0400

However... My thinkpad T61 appears to now get upset with kernel suspend.
So I built debian sid's uswsup-0.8-1 which provides s2ram. And everything
appears to be happy now.

Now off to find out why we're still on a 15 month old version of
uswsusp, and why splashy.h has gboolean instead of int.
