My machine booted with kernel 3.17 but the video (AMD dual monitor) did
not work properly and I could not get it to work. Sorry.

[Bug 1358493] [NEW] Blank screen after locked screen.

2014-08-18 Thread rmcd
Public bug reported:

This new report is identical to 1337373. I thought this bug was fixed,
but it is not. From the previous bug report:

This appears to be the same bug others have reported --- lock screen is
used, the display goes blank, and then the display remains black after a
key or the mouse is touched.

For me, this only occurs after the display has been blanked for a period
of some hours (typically overnight).

[Bug 1337373] Re: Ubuntu 14.04 blank screen after wakeup from sleep

2014-08-01 Thread rmcd
This problem has not occurred since, I believe, the -32 kernel upgrade.
(I have to be tentative because it was always intermittent, but it did
usually occur overnight and I have had periods of 1-2 days when the
screen was locked without incident.)

Earlier this week I installed the new bios:

9SKT81AUS
06/17/2014

and the problem has not occurred since then.

Thanks!

I'll second @neilcurrie. I installed xscreensaver a week ago and things
have been fine. I continue to get frequent apport crash reports for
xorg, but I haven't had any blackscreen lockups since disabling
lightlocker and switching to xscreensave.

[Bug 653132] Re: Add Printer dialog requests root password if user is not in Configure Printers group

2014-04-24 Thread rmcd
I believe I have encountered this issue in a fresh install of Trusty. I
was able to add a network printer only with gksudo system-config-
printer. Otherwise, my credentials were refused and I could get part
way through printer installation, but could never complete it. I could
cancel so the credentials dialog went away, but it came up again when I
clicked on apply at the end of the install.

[Bug 1248607] [NEW] 13.10 Intel 6205 WPA2 enterprise wifi drops

2013-11-06 Thread rmcd
Public bug reported:

This is a longstanding problem, not fixed in 13.10. I can connect to my
university's wpa2 wifi. The connection typically works initially but
becomes unusable after a few seconds or a minute or two. On rare
occassions it remains up for an hour or two. The machine is a Lenovo
X220, I have the latest BIOS (1.39), and this is a fresh install of

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-12-27 Thread rmcd
@felixhaller: I share your frustration. I have what seems to be yet a
different version of the bug, where in 12.04 I remain unable to connect
to WPA2 Enterprise networks.

The fix for me was upgrading to 12.10. Now I can connect reliably and
maintain the connection. I realize this may not be feasible for you.
However, you may want to try a live CD and see if you can connect with
12.10. If 12.10 works for you and 12.04 does not, that should narrow
down the possible causes of the problem.

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-10-24 Thread rmcd
I have an ignorant question: There is no AES choice in the configuration
dialog for WPA2, so which of the encryption methods are AES? (Is PEAP
the same as AES?)

Another question: My android (ICS) phone connects successfully to our
wpa2 network using peap, but it automatically configured none for
phase 2 authentication. None is not an option for 12.04 and I am
selecting MSChap2. Should there be a none option?

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-10-08 Thread rmcd
Unfortunately, the fix does not work for me. First, to be sure I'm using
the correct version, 'dpkg -l | grep wpa' gives this:

ii wpagui 0.7.3-6ubuntu2.1
graphical user interface for wpa_supplicant
ii wpasupplicant 0.7.3-6ubuntu2.1
client support for WPA and WPA2 (IEEE 802.11i)

The first time I rebooted after installing from proposed, connection was
successful. Every subsequent attempt failed, whether after resuming from
a suspend or after a reboot. I get into an endless loop of password
requests. Here is a log extract for the last attempt:

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-10-08 Thread rmcd
Mathieu,

First, sorry if I was premature in changing the tag, I thought I was
acting as instructed.

I definitely do have permission to access the resource, and my android
phone has no problem connecting. My computer did connect when I first
rebooted, so I presume that serves as a test about settings. I didn't
change the settings afterwards and it never connected again. I am in
touch with our networking people. They are aware of the issue, but there
are not many linux users and I am not knowledgeable about networking so
I need assistance in asking them for help. Anything you can suggest?

What I plan to do when I have time is to install the proposed software
on my bootable USB version of 12.04 and try that. I am open to other
suggestions.

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-09-26 Thread rmcd
This issue has gotten the attention of our network folks because of the
similar Android Jelly Bean problem. Would it help for affected folks to
provide more details about their network configurations? In addition to
using Aruba networks, we have a steel-belted Radius authentication
server. That vendor is apparently patching to address the Jelly Bean
issue, but it's not clear that the Jelly Bean patch solves the
connection problem for Android in our environment.

I had a mixed experience testing Ubuntu connections (with m-trudel's
wpa-supplicant) against the patched radius server.

[Bug 969343] Re: Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-09-10 Thread rmcd
@mathieu-tl:  I think you're correct. As a test, I rebooted into ubunutu
11.10. In the past, I have always been able to connect with 11.10, this
time I again got connection denied with reason 17. However, my Android
phone connects immediately to the same AP, so I don't think the AP is
overloaded. Moreover, I can't connect anywhere on campus that I've
tried. (There would be lots of complaints from others if this were due
to overloading.) As I mentioned, there was a networking infrastructure
upgrade this summer. This could account for a different experience now
with 11.10

So you're probably right that this is a different issue. It does seem
widespread where there is aruba networking infrastructure (for example,
see this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1889157 .)

[Bug 1011698] Re: Performance problems with Nvidia driver

2012-08-27 Thread rmcd
I'm wondering if the performance problem is related to monitor rotation.
I have two monitors (both 1920x1200) with two video cards. When I rotate
either or both, I get the slowdowns I have described above. A few days
it occurred to me that rotation might be an issue. I experimented and
learned that when I rotate neither, the problem largely goes away. I
have been running like this without a reboot for several days now.
Youtube still works fine and the R rgl package is mostly okay. I'm now
using driver 304.37, installed using the nvidia installation package.

Could others experiencing this problem chime in on whether it might be
linked to rotation? Are you rotating? Do you still experience the
problem if you don't?

I've attached my xorg.conf. The rotation commands are commented out, but
I wanted them visible so someone could say if there was a problem.

[Bug 1011698] Re: Performance problems with Nvidia driver

2012-08-17 Thread rmcd
I've just installed 304.37 via x-swat ppa. Video is still broken. Here
are some examples. 1. Chrome doesn't work properly with youtube videos
(the screen essentially freezes while the video is initially loading and
the controls such as youtube's sound level control don't respond to
clicks ). 2. Firefox works better, but with odd bugs, for example when I
move a terminal window over a playing youtube video, the video is
visible through the terminal window. Everywhere else the terminal is
opaque (compositing is turned off). 3. The rgl package in R doesn't work
properly. In 11.10, I could resize and rotate graphics. In 12.04, the
graphics are resizable when I first log in, but a few minutes after
logging in the plot window freezes.

Just to follow up on my previous comment, I had to downgrade to 295.40

Mathieu's ppa did not work for me. (To be clear, I only installed the
package wpasupplicant_0.7.3-6ubuntu2.1~mtrudel1.) I get a long string of
these:

[ 25.748578] wlan0: authenticate with d8:c7:c8:71:xx:yy (try 1)
[ 25.946467] wlan0: authenticate with d8:c7:c8:71:xx:yy (try 2)

[ 144.680999] wlan0: authenticate with d8:c7:c8:71:xx:yy (try 2)
[ 144.681881] wlan0: d8:c7:c8:71:xx:yy denied authentication (status 17)

What other information would be helpful? (I was attempting to try a
wireshark capture with the help of Diane Trout but was unsuccessful when
trying to capture packets for this specific connection. If it would
help, tips on how to do it would be appreciated.)

2012-08-08 Thread rmcd
I just tested xubuntu 12.10 Alpha three and it did *not* connect. I get
the same sslv3 alert bad certificate error.

Here is what I was told about our recent networking change: we were
using Cisco WAPs, whereas now we're using Aruba. In both cases, we used
WPA2 Enterprise MSCHAPv2 PEAP for the authentication.

The failure of Diane Trout's gnutls fix roughly coincides with this
changeover, although the tech folks here say the timing is not exact
(i.e., I was able to connect at least once after they say they made the
changeover).

Diane Trout's wpa-supplicant gnutls patch has stopped working. My
institution has made some changes in their wireless configuration. I
haven't been able to find out what they did, and it's possible that some
other software upgrade on my system caused the problem instead.

In any event I am now again unable to connect wirelessly with 12.04.

[Bug 1011698] Re: Performance problems with Nvidia driver

2012-07-24 Thread rmcd
I have just confirmed that beta driver 304.22 (installed via the
upubuntu ppa) does not fix the problem. It has interesting effects,
though. It apparently caused the sound to drop out on youtube (this had
never happened before), and at times the video would stumble and other
times it would start playing at double speed. These are new symptoms.
But the bottom line is that graphical components that stopped working
correctly with 12.04 still don't work with this driver.

[Bug 1004725] Re: Ricoh-Pro-1107EX authentication with PostScript driver broken

2012-06-23 Thread rmcd
I did the following.

First, I verified that the usercode was operational using the plx
printer driver. I put in a random usercode and received an access
restricted message on the printer's job history screen. Using the
correct usercode, the job printed.

Second, I attempted to print a small document using the Postscript
printer driver. I first disabled the printer following the directions in
reporting CUPS bugs. The printout file is attached. Next I re-enabled
the printer and attempted to print. In all cases I receive an access
restricted message when using the postscript driver.

from the x-swat/x-updates ppa and installed using jockey-gtk.

I should add that I am running two graphics cards powering two 1920x1200

[Bug 1004725] [NEW] Ricoh-Pro-1107EX printer driver broken

2012-05-25 Thread rmcd
Public bug reported:

The Ricoh-Pro-1107EX printer driver has a PS and a PXL version. Using
12.,04, both fail but with different problems.

The PS driver cannot print. If the printer's usercode feature is
activated, printing fails with an Access restricted message. If the
usercode feature is not activated, printing fails with a Storing
Failed error.

The PXL driver prints, but it cannot print duplex or with finishing.
When those are selected, the output is single-sided with no stapling.

This behavior is a regression. I have confirmed that printing works
correctly with this printer using 10.04.

[Bug 982710] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40 driver is extremely slow

2012-05-21 Thread rmcd
I would like to ask for clarification. My status is that I am running
295.49, installed via precise-updates. I had previously uninstalled
everything nvidia, attempted to get nouveau working (I have a 2 video
card setup), and then decided to give the binary drivers one more try.
So I apt-get installed them.

My symptoms remain. All is fine immediately after a restart. However,
after a period of time, X is slow, and Flash becomes unplayable. This
behavior is a huge regression compared to 10.04.

What is the right venue for these problems? Is there a different open
bug that is more pertinent? Thanks.

[Bug 982710] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40 driver is extremely slow

2012-05-11 Thread rmcd
As a test I installed 302.07. It exhibits the same problem of initial
snappy response and then, after a period, several-second delays in
certain graphical tasks. Moreover, it takes 5 times longer to run the
matlab 3-D benchmark than did any of the 295.x series.

On the whole, in my experience 295.20 is the least broken of the group
that I have tried (295.2, 295.4, 295.49, 302.07).

[Bug 982710] Re: [regression] Nvidia 295.40 driver is extremely slow

2012-05-08 Thread rmcd
I was waiting for an update before reporting that I was affected. I have
installed 295.49 and it has not fixed my problem. The same issue exists
with 259.33 and 259.40. This is new behavior in 12.04.

I have a G96 [GeForce 9500 GT] (from lshw)

When I first boot up, video is fast. After a period of time, certain
applications become very slow, taking seconds to do what had previously
been instantaneous. A graph using the rgl package in R, for example,
comes up as a grey box for several seconds, and resizing the box takes
seconds. When I first boot, all of this is instantaneous.

[Bug 969343] [NEW] Unable to connect to WPA enterprise wireless

2012-03-30 Thread rmcd
Public bug reported:

Using identical settings as in 11.10, I am unable to make a wpa
enterprise connection using xubuntu precise beta 2. This is a Lenovo
X220 with a Centrino Advanced-N 6205 wireless interface. During the
attempted logon, I am not presented with a certificate to approve,
although wireless instructions for OSX suggest that I should be.
However, I never had to approve a certificate when connecting with 11.10
-- I just ignored the certificate screen and everything worked.

if_match_bug 1 workaround does *not* fix the problem. To be specific,
when I have mounted the davfs folder, I can create directories and I can
delete files on the webdav server. But I cannot create files. A copy
command creates the file for a few seconds and then it vanishes. I *can*
create files on the webdav server using nautilus, just not from the
command line.

To reproduce this problem in Lucid, create test.tex:

\documentclass[a4paper]{article}
\begin{document}
\begin{equation}

Then: latex test;dvipdf test;evince test.pdf

You will produce 4 or 5 lines of Error: Illegal entry in bfrange block

Note that the bug occurs with both output produced by dvipdf and ps2pdf
(both ghostscript) but does not occur with pdflatex.

[Bug 572777] Re: NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant timing out when connecting wireless

2010-05-24 Thread rmcd
WPA is now working for me on both Intel chipsets. It turns out that I
was having router problems as well as software problems. I did the
wpa_supplicant upgrade along with associated libraries, but also got the
router properly reconfigured at about the same time. So I cannot
honestly say what did the trick. At any rate, wireless now seems to be
working properly. Thanks everyone!

[Bug 572777] Re: NetworkManager or wpa_supplicant timing out when connecting wireless

2010-05-18 Thread rmcd
I'm one of the people with an Intel chip (5100) in a Lenovo x200s. I'm
sorry to say that compiling and installing wpa_supplicant 6.10 did not
fix the problem. (But thank you also Nils.) I am basically unable to
connect to WPA networks. I can usually connect to WEP, but the
connection is slow and almost unusable. Following Nils I installed wicd
and killed network-manager and nm-applet. That didn't help either. The
wicd connection attempts fail with a bad password error.

This strikes me as a pretty serious issue.

[Bug 350680] Re: IBM/Lenovo Laptops crash when waking up from hibernation

2010-02-04 Thread rmcd
Your finding about the hard disk power management setting raises a
couple of questions. 1. Would the power setting change cause issues if
the user hibernated on battery and restored with line power or vice
versa. 2. Apart from the power setting change, what about the use case
where the user hibernates, changes batteries (one could imagine this on
a long plane flight), and then resumes. Is that a situation covered by
the hibernation code? (I ask because the one time in Karmic that I did
change batteries --- I changed from one size battery to another --- on
resume I got an ACPI error message and terrible things happened.)

Regarding your comment (b), I can unfortunately confirm that terrible
things happen if you choose a different system than the one you
hibernated.

2010-02-03 Thread rmcd
Christoph: I think the important change is that my very basic script
uses hibernate-disk (from the hibernate package) rather than the gnome
menu. The script only unmounts specific network drives and ensures that
virtualbox is not running (something that guaranteed a crash pre-karmic;
I haven't tested it recently).

I completely agree that unmounting is not a satisfactory fix, only at
best a temporary workaround.

It appears to me that using the hibernate package (1.99-1) may reduce
crashes associated with hibernation. I invoke it using a script where I
first check for remote mounted drives, then I just call hibernate-disk.
(I wondered if failing to unmount might be causing problems.) In limited
testing, this is considerably more stable. I would be curious to know if
anyone else has tried the hibernate package and if so whether if helps.
I also wonder if unmounting helps anyone else.

[Bug 350680] Re: IBM T42 crashes on wake up from hibernate

2010-01-27 Thread rmcd
I use a Lenovo X200s and have consistent problems with hibernation in
Karmic. It will usually hibernate successfully once or twice but then it
crashes on resume. Suspend usually works okay, but I have had suspend
crashes as well, albeit less frequently. I have tried the default
hibernation scheme as well as uswsusp (changed by editing
/etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module. Hibernation seemed much more reliable
on the same machine in Jaunty.

I am presently running 2.6.31-18-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 8
14:55:26 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux . I tried the pre-release kernel in the
hopes that hibernation would work better. It doesn't.

I also have a Lenovo R61 with a fresh install of Karmic; it also has
hibernation crashes. Hibernation seems broken to me.

2009-03-25 Thread rmcd
Danny, have you tried my suggestion to run in a terminal iwconfig wlan0
essid ssid_name? (substitute for wlan0 and ssid_name as appropriate). I
have no idea why this works, but I have had a 100% connection success
rate over the last 6 weeks. I find it works either a) to issue the
command once NM starts trying to connect, or b) to issue it after the
WPA2 password dialog pops up. If (b), I sometimes have to click on the
NM icon and then click on the particular connection I'm trying to make.
But I have been connecting daily with no failures since I first
discovered this workaround.

If a networking guru has any clue why this might work, I would love to
hear an explanation.

2009-02-16 Thread rmcd
I seem to be able to connect if, using the CLI, I issue the command
iwconfig wlan0 essid northwestern. Is it apparent to anyone why this
command would help NM connect?

I'm not sure the sequence matters, but if NM fails to connect automatically, (I
keep getting the certificate dialog), I click
cancel on the dialog and run the iwconfig command. Sometimes it then connects
automatically, other times I need to click on the NM icon for the connection,
after which it connects. If I issue the command before I get the certificate
dialog, it just connects. So far I have had no failures with this method, but I
am reluctant to claim victory. I hope that others still having problems can try
this out.

[Bug 272185] Re: [Intrepid] iwl3945 + iwlagn -- network-manager will not connect to a WPA EAP (Enterprise) network (disassociating by local choice (reason=3) )

2009-01-13 Thread rmcd
Network-manager still does not connect. With a connection set up as
described above (wpa2, peapv0, mschapv2) I still get the dialog box
asking if I want to select a certificate, followed by no connection. The
log (/var/log/wpa_supplicant.log) contains an endless string of the
following:

CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys
CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED - Disconnect event - remove keys

etc.

However, I am now able to connect using wpa_supplicant. I run this on
the command line:

sudo wpa_supplicant -c wpa_supplicant_nu.conf -d -iwlan0 -Dwext -B

once it connects I run dhclient3

Here is the config file wpa_supplicant_nu.conf

ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
update_config=1

network={
ssid=Northwestern
scan_ssid=1
proto=WPA2
key_mgmt=WPA-EAP
pairwise=CCMP TKIP
   group=CCMP TKIP
eap=PEAP
identity=myidentity
password=x
phase1=peaplabel=0
phase2=auth=MSCHAPV2
}

So given this result I am guessing that this is *not* a driver problem
and that there is still some error in the way that network-manager is
interacting with wpa_supplicant.

Good point about the driver. If I try to specify iwlagn wpa_supplicant
doesn't know what that is.

One more weird thing to mention. I can use wpa_supplicant manually to
connect right after rebooting. If I bring down wlan0 and then try to
reconnect, it seems to work once or twice and then I can't reconnect
without rebooting. Each time I am deleting /var/run/wpa_supplicant/* . I
don't know networking well enough to understand what rebooting changes.

2009-01-12 Thread rmcd
Unfortunately Dan's fix (using the Jaunty networking packages in
Intrepid) does not work for me. My laptop is a Lenovo X200s with a 5100
AGN adapter, using iwlagn. My university network uses WPA2, PEAP (ver
0), MS-CHAP2. I have always had erratic connections using Intrepid ---
sometimes the laptop connected, sometimes it didn't and I would keep
getting the certificate dialog. That pattern persists with the Jaunty
packages. Just now I had a connection, I took the laptop to a new
location and it refused to connect. The probability of making a
connection may be a little higher, but it's hard to tell and it is still
not reliable.

Let me ask a question that would help in debugging: Is there any way to
force network-manager to try to connect wirelessly? Sometimes wireless
is activated (wlan0 is up) and I am in range of a node, but the
wireless network selection is grayed out in the NM dialog box (from
the panel) and I am don't know how to force NM to try to connect.
Restarting NM doesn't help. Any thoughts about what to do? Maybe I'm
missing something obvious. Thanks.

[Bug 272185] Re: [Intrepid] iwl3945 + iwlagn -- network-manager will not connect to a WPA EAP (Enterprise) network (disassociating by local choice (reason=3) )

2009-01-12 Thread rmcd
Following posted directions for Windows
(http://www.it.northwestern.edu/oncampus/wireless/wireless-connections
/wireless-win.html), wireless is 802.1x/WPA2, PEAP, MSCHAPv2. I figured
out PEAPv0 while getting wpa_supplicant to work under Puppy Linux (it
worked flawlessly, but on a different laptop, so the driver and
networking hardware may be an issue). I've never had to deal with
certificates in Ubuntu at the times when the connection worked. When it
doesn't work, I am presented with the dialog box asking for a
certificate. I don't believe I'm supposed to need a certificate. Under
Windows, the procedure is that I am asked to authenticate myself with a
password and then I'm connected. (Actually, even Windows sometimes has
trouble connecting. I have found Lenovo's Access Connections to work
reliably as does wpa_supplicant in Puppy Linux.)

I'm not a networking guru and I'm not a Ubuntu expert so I may miss
something. The important thing from my perspective is that some of the
time the wireless connection just works, and it works for hours, and it
reconnects if I click on the GUI. Other times it will not connect no
matter what I try.

[Bug 292493] Re: usb startup disk failed to unmount /cdrom when change partition tables

2009-01-05 Thread rmcd
I encountered the same problem as Riobard. I booted from a USB drive and
tried to install, but /cdrom was mounted (same error message as above).
I am trying to install to /dev/sdb (which is a new hard disk) but Ubuntu
mounts it to /cdrom. I tried but was unable to sudo umount /cdrom before
installing (I tried using lsof and fuser to see if there were open
files). I ran ubiquity -d but the install did not succeed.

The result is that I am unable to install ubuntu on this machine.

I have attached /var/log/syslog and will send the other requested log
files.

[Bug 5364] Re: Can't use static ip address with network-manager (and thus no VPN connections menu for static users)

2008-04-22 Thread rmcd
I just want to add my comment to those above. This problem is a show-
stopper for me. It makes it impossible for me to use or to recommend
Hardy, which I otherwise think is a terrific distribution.
