[Bug 1775583] [NEW] Wifi drops out, takes 5 mins to recover

2018-06-07 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

My wifi used to be solid, but recently it's started dropping out 2-3
times a day. Looking in the logs the only thing I see that may be
relevant is:

Jun 07 11:57:07 laptop kernel: brcmfmac: brcmf_msgbuf_query_dcmd: Timeout on
response for query command
Jun 07 11:57:07 laptop kernel: brcmfmac: brcmf_run_escan: error (-5)

I was wondering if it's similar to

Yep, bugrasan's solution works for me. Shame they're monochrome emojis,
but at least text is readable now.

[Bug 1770350] [NEW] Emoji oversized 👎

2018-05-10 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

As can be seen in the screenshots posted by another user at
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1028674/my-thunderbird-version-on-18-04-have-emoji-bug

(and in the attached simpler screenshot)

I also have this problem.

They seem to be 8-10× the size of normal text and cause lots of weird
problems with the UI as it redraws.

[Bug 1575078] Re: [XPS 15 9550, Realtek ALC3266] Headphone jack stops working after a while

2016-06-27 Thread shinyblue
Note: After a complete system re-install my audio had been working fine:
**Stock kernel/Intel VGA/GDM/Gnome**

Then the problem re-occurred after I did some work with an alternative
stack: **Stock kernel/Nvidia/lightdm/Gnome** and then switched back to
my original stack.

**Perhaps lightdm does some dodgy low level configuration? Or perhaps
it's something to do with using Nvidia (with prime-select nvidia)?**

(if you're wondering why I'd change my DM for a session it's because
nvidia drivers + gdm = dead system. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1559576 so when I
need the nvidia stuff for OpenCL support in Darktable I have to switch
DMs.)

Back on the original stack, the command line fix in comment #7 worked
for me on 4.4.0-24-generic after unplugging and re-plugging in the jack.

[Bug 1580917] [NEW] [XPS 15 9550, Realtek ALC3266, Black Headphone Out, Left] No sound at all

2016-05-12 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

All was working fine, then one day it goes silent when plugging in my
speakers to the headphone socket, and forever after with something
plugged in (internal speakers still work fine).

Looking at pavucontrol and/or "Sound settings" under Gnome it shows that
the sound should be playing on the Headphones output port - the VU meter
is bouncing up and down ok, but it's silent. Pull out the wire (or
select internal speakers for the Output) and the sound switches to the
internal speakers OK.

Last time this happened I fiddled for ages and then got distorted sound
(sounds like some sort of cross-channel thing) and this only went a away
with a complete re-install of Ubuntu (which I did to try to fix a
separate bug but am not willing to do again!).

I ran alsa-info.sh from the command line and uploaded the info. Here's
the URL it gave me to share: http://www.alsa-
project.org/db/?f=06...3f7ebb379442a7

It's now happened again, having spent all Friday enjoying music, Monday
morning turn on and silence! I've not done any upgrades since.

I have tried completely reinstalling pulseaudio (based on suggestions found on
the ubuntu wiki) to no avail.

## Config 1 ##

- 7:* Probably an E. I had it as a pass because when one monitor is ON it
works, but having done the other tests I realised that the hang comes when
two are turned on at once, which was not something I tested here.

- 5:E With monitor plugged in, working under Gnome, logging out to LightDm
caused hang. Also booting to lightdm with hdmi monitor caused hang.

- 6:F. gdm goes blinky on laptop, unusable with external screen plugged in. See
note below, seems to be the same problem: can't do two screens at once.
Unplugging restores a working laptop screen.

- 8:F on test 8 first plugin of monitor caused blank screens. Unplug, replug
gave
an image on the external, laptop turned off. Nb. I had the 'Displays' config
ui up the 2nd time I plugged in, not sure if this makes any difference. This
is working. But trying to turn them both on at once resulted in a flashing
  unusable display on the laptop

## Config 2 ##

- 1:F gdm gives completely black screen. Can swap to tty, system not
dead.

- 7:F both screens blank, laptop one twitches a bit. Removing cable brought
  back system.

- 8:F as 7:F, but when unplugged needed to swap to tty and back to get
  functioning mouse/interface.

- 6:F as for 1:F

## Config 3 ##

- 5:F lightdm goes all black/flickery when external monitor plugged in.
  Recoverable, though.

- 6:F gdm like lightdm when external monitor plugged in.

- 7:E, 8:E **gnome works on one screen**, but selecting both on causes a
  complete hang.

## Config 4 ##

- 1:F black screen. Pressing power button does cause normal shutdown

- 7:F both go black. Recovered after unplug.

- 8:F as 7:F

## Config 5 ##

- 6:F flashy screen, mostly blank. Removing cable (quickly) brought
stability.

- 7:E, 8:E ext. monitor works but hang if 2 displays at once.

## Config 6 ##

Was all the same.

## Conclusions ##

- GDM: intel only across the three drivers.

- Gnome/Gnome classic behave the same.

- Two monitors:

  - both on: you just can't have it with gnome. (lightdm works, and previously
I had Unity working, too)

  - one on: works with intel, not nvidia.

[Bug 1574533] [NEW] Cannot start gdm3 with nvidia drivers in use

2016-04-25 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

When using nvidia-361 drivers gdm will not start, whereas lightdm will
start (and is able to launch a gnome DE session).

I get a blank screen. Sometimes it cycles between blank and then flash
to tty and back again and again.

I am reporting here after reading the 'where to report a bug' page on
the ubuntu wiki, but the following Xorg bug may be related
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1559304

If I use prime-select intel then I can start GDM.

[Bug 1559304] Re: nvidia 361 drivers cause unresponsive machine

2016-04-25 Thread shinyblue
I tried the solution from #6 but it did not work for me: With nvidia-364
installed:

1. I could start LightDM but could not start a Gnome session - few
flashes after entering password and it bounced me back to the lightdm
login screen.

2. If I selected gdm as my display manager I could not get to the login
screen. It would keep flashing blank, then back to a tty, then back to
blank, then back to tty.

Sorry, missed the part about marking it "confirmed". Have done that now.

Also, more data for you: I've noted that while booting from a USB stick,
if I boot using UEFI then this occurs, but if I boot in legacy bios mode
then I can plug in a monitor without any issues.

2016-04-18 Thread shinyblue
Thanks.

So I've never run anything before Ubuntu 16.04 on this laptop, so no,
it's not an upgrade that's broken it.

I installed linux-image-4.6.0-040600rc4-generic, ran Gnome-Shell and
plugged in the external monitor, while watching syslog.

Saw the same error about fifo underrun before the whole system locked up
again, requiring a hard reset.

[Bug 1571664] [NEW] Cannot connect to guest Windows share

2016-04-18 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

My printer offers up a windows share. It's a guest share with no
username/password required.

It used to be accessible to me by typing
smb://epsonxp830.local/usbstorage into nautilus, or by browsing the
Network to get there. Now I am unable to connect. I get a dialog box up
that says "Password required for share usbstorage on epsonxp380.local"
although it offers an Anonymous radio element option. Clicking Connect
here yields nothing. Just a pause and then the same dialog comes up.

I can connect to the share using smbclient OK, and it works from a
Windows machine I have access to, too. Seems to be just the gvfs (I'm
guessing) integration.

[Bug 1568865] [NEW] [drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B FIFO underrun

2016-04-11 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Running Gnome-Shell on ubuntu 16.04 on my Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop using
Intel graphics (Nvidia card turned off), I get this error in syslog when
plugging in an external monitor (HDMI).

Apr 11 14:28:38 miaco kernel: [ 2616.604641]
[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler [i915_bpo]] *ERROR* CPU pipe B
FIFO underrun

Meanwhile both screens flash and show corruption. Most of the time this
has caused a hang that needs a hard power off to get out of, but
occasionally removing the external monitor is enough to get going again
and so I've been able to find this message in the logs.

Note that when using Nvidia (proprietary) drivers and Unity DE I do not
have this problem; so it seems to be related to the intel drivers, or
possibly Gnome Shell's use of them.

Happy to help if I can (would like to be able to use external monitors!)

[Bug 1562140] [NEW] When importing raw+jpg files shotwell needlessly creates _embedded.jpg files

2016-03-25 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I have my camera (Canon D700) configured to record RAW+JPG files. So
this generates, say, IMG_1234.CR2 and IMG_1234.JPG.

However when importing these to Shotwell it goes and creates
IMG_1234_embedded.jpg as well.

This is not needed and wastes disk space and slows down importing.

(Possibly related suggestion: It would be fab if Shotwell had an option
to ignore raw files as I only use it for viewing my processed images but
like to keep the raw files around in case I want to tweak again later. )

[Bug 1559308] Re: Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-03-21 Thread shinyblue
OK so it might NOT be gnome-related. I've had a few of these crashes
using Unity now. Attached is syslog that I was able to get after
connecting an HDMI monitor via the external Dell usb-3.1 adaptor which
exposes an HDMI port.

Luckily ? while this did crash it didn't kill the machine, so I got the
logs.

When I tried plugging it into the other port it just died horribly.

So this is a gnome-related bug.

[Bug 1559308] [NEW] Plugging HDMI screen in causes system hang

2016-03-19 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I have a 4K UHD laptop screen and am running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Beta1
using 4.4.0-13-generic and the Nouveau drivers.

If I plug in an external HDMI monitor (FHD) either into either HDMI port
(there's one on the machine and there's one available via a usb 3.1
extra adaptor) then the whole system hangs, completely unresponsive and
needing a hard reboot. Before hanging the 2nd display gets an image as
expected, but the laptop's screen flashes randomly, sometimes you see
weird artifacts. Then the hang comes.

[Bug 1559304] Re: nvidia 361 drivers cause unresponsive machine

2016-03-19 Thread shinyblue
Please note that because my system is unresponsive WITH this package
installed, I had to run apport-bug when they were NOT installed, so some
of the above may not be relevant!

Very happy to provide other logs from my system or to try anything
(although I'm not clever enough to start compiling kernels or such!).

[Bug 1559304] [NEW] nvidia 361 drivers cause unresponsive machine

2016-03-19 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04 Beta1.

Installing the proprietary drivers (either the tested or the updates)
one results in: the splash screen goes away, revealing all the console
output (with mostly green OKs) and the console log-in. This whole thing
then flashes on and off and the system seems a little too upset to
receive keyboard input. There is no mouse. The only way out is a hard
reset, or if networking got started you can sometimes SSH in and issue a
shutdown that way.

The Nvidia driver is 361.28-0ubuntu1

It's a Dell xps-15 9550 with the UHD 4k screen.

To restore the system I have to boot to root console from the grub menu and
then remove the nvidia stuff.

[Bug 1557089] [NEW] Activities: characters are not in typed order

2016-03-14 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Click Activities. Run finger from Q to T. You should get qwert but
instead I get qwtre

It also affects more normal use, e.g. I can't type term (for terminal),
it comes out "temr". It seems to work if you type really slowly.

I also noticed weird keyboard behaviour in gnome software and photos bot
on the search fields. Press a single key and it comes out twice. Both
apps then because unusable after I'd pressed backspace which seemed to
go on forever.

Keyboard works fine in other contexts and I never had these issues in
14.04's version of Gnome.

[Bug 1255022] Re: Wireless networking unavailable/does not work

2013-12-05 Thread shinyblue
Well this is embarrassing. So not only does the last one you made work,
but I re-tested the stock kernels and they now work as well:

Linux reech 3.2.0-57-generic #87-Ubuntu SMP Tue Nov 12 21:35:10 UTC 2013 x86_64

I don't really understand what could have happened, it was definitely
repeatable behaviour (did it several times) with the original report.

Thanks anyway, and sorry for any time wasting that's due to anything I
should have done differently. Guess you can close this now.

[Bug 1257321] [NEW] Cannot install extensions from extensions.gnome.org

2013-12-03 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I used to be able to install extensions by clicking the slidy switch, e.g. at
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/15/alternatetab/

Now when I operate the switch it says ON, but nothing happens. I do not
get the darkened confirmation screen. My .xsession-errors file then
contains the following error:

JS ERROR: !!! Exception was: TypeError: info is null

2013-11-28 Thread shinyblue
That said, using that kernel, I've had times when it's locked up -
acting like I have no network connection but not saying disconnected.
turning wifi off and on again (via network manager) brought it back
again. Couuld be coincidence, but never needed to do this before.

[Bug 1255022] [NEW] Wireless networking unavailable/does not work

2013-11-26 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

After an upgrade to the linux-image-3.2.0-56-generic kernel on Ubuntu
12.04.3 LTS, my laptop had no wifi. No lights, nothing in network
manager to even acknowledge the existance of a wireless capability.

On rebooting into the previous kernel linux-image-3.2.0-55-generic it
works again (and thus I am able to report this!).

[Bug 923876] Re: FR: Limit and clean-up kernel images and headers automatically in LTS

2013-11-04 Thread shinyblue
Why is this bug marked fixed for Precise? And how can this bug be
"fixed" for Quantal which is not LTS? The point of the bug title is that
LTS is the one that this bug refers to because over 5 years the kernels
will really accumulate.

So I don't see how it can be fixed until it's fixed such that those of
us on LTS get the old kernels cleaned up simply by running the updates.

Confused.

In case it's helpful, here's a screenshot of the panic from
/var/log/syslog (never gets written to disk), after doing a "test crash"
as explained at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/CrashdumpRecipe?action=show&redirect=KernelTeam%2FCrashdumpRecipe
(n.b. as instructed, I've stripped back the APPEND options one by one -
always get a hang)

[Bug 1132046] Re: [Acer Aspire 5750] Complete hang, no response to SysRq magic keys

2013-10-21 Thread shinyblue
Installed linux-crashdump. Test with AltGr+SysRq+C. Crashes. Hangs with
no disk activity 5+minutes. Does not reboot. Nothing in /var/crash,
nothing apparently unusual in /var/log/kern.log I'll assume that linux-
crashdump is crashing and ignore that - install linux-crashdump-
crashdump? ;-)

Next time it happens I'll dump the whole of /var/log and /var/crash
immediately after, JIC.

Aaaagh! I thought that flash routine ran fast. It hadn't worked. I've
tried again:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
V1.21
08/09/2012

No crashes yet (5 mins use so far), but promise to update this if/when
it happens again. Sorry for wasting your time, let's hope the BIOS
update fixed it!

[Bug 1166104] [NEW] Forwarding a message breaks character encoding

2013-04-08 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I received an email (MIME, multipart, UTF-8 text specified for both HTML
and Plain parts). When I click Forward Message then the encoding gets
broken.

It appears that the UTF-8 has been interpreted as Latin-1 (or at least
not UTF8) and 'converted' into UTF8, even though it already was, so I
see (what could be) double-encoded characters.

The mail was from Yahoo: X-Mailer: YahooMailWebService/0.8.140.532

The message displays fine. If I hit Reply, that's fine. If I start a new
message and copy-and-paste, that works properly. It appears to be just
the Forward button that's broken.

Both Forward and Shift-Forward exibit the same behaviour.

[Bug 1161135] Re: Wifi connection never completes

2013-03-30 Thread shinyblue
I installed

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc4-raring/linux-
image-3.9.0-030900rc4-generic_3.9.0-030900rc4.201303232035_amd64.deb

(inc. the extras package), rebooted the machine, but it no longer seemed
to think it even had a wifi capability. The wifi light on the laptop was
not even on (in the problem case that I opened thebug with, the light
would be on, and the computer would start to try to connect, but it
would not succeed). I tried a reboot, but still, no light; no
connection.

I've tagged this kernel-unable-to-test-upstream because I think the test
is inconclusive.

[Bug 1161135] [NEW] Wifi connection never completes

2013-03-27 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I have an intermittant problem with connecting to wifi networks. If the
machine boots and connects successfully, the connection is reliable and
stays up. If, however, the machine boots and has not connected, it never
succeeds in establishing a connection. In the 2nd (failing) state I have
tried connecting to more than one network and it will fail to connect
with that, too. At the same time, other devices have not had any
problems with their connections to the same networks. These are familiar
networks, so I know that there have not been any config changes that
would otherwise account for this behaviour.

Previously this was not a problem on this machine, which makes me
suspect it's a problem that's crept in a few kernel releases ago. I run
Ubuntu Precise and update it every month. I've had this problem for
about 4-8 weeks, I would guess.

I notice that there is a new kernel out, so I will upgrade and try that.

[Bug 1103482] [NEW] about:addons exentsion search fails to find exentsions by name

2013-01-23 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I wanted to install Firebug. about:addons > Search > firebug. This shows
a bunch of exenstions loosely related to firebug, EXECPT firebug itself.
I've had the same frustration with a particular named video download
helper, e.g. "easy youtube video downloader" - not listed. Even adding
in the author's name as search terms still does not find the right
extension.

Surely an exact match on a name should prevail over all the other cruft?
Or is it just completely broken?

[Bug 1070256] [NEW] mount.cifs occasionally causes GPF error/kernel panic when mounting at boot

2012-10-23 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I have a number of Ubuntu Precise Desktop machines which are turned on
during office hours on a LAN which rely on /etc/fstab entries to auto
mount cifs shares to a Debian Samba server on the LAN. Normally this
works fine. Some machines have static IPs, some use DHCP.

Occasionally though, at boot time, I get a black screen of death with
stack trace dumped like that shown below. Note that often this causes
the entire system to hang, but that today it's continued to boot and
everything seems to be working, except the samba shares. It is usually
fine after a reboot.

There is no reason to suggest there is any problem at the server end
(nothing in syslog) and the server is in use by a dozen other machines
on the LAN which are successfully connected.

Sample output (I expect ubuntu-bug attached this anyway):

[Bug 1060052] [NEW] gnome shell freezes on startup. intermittent

2012-10-02 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Occasionally, gnome shell locks up right after lightdm login. The mouse
moves, but nothing responds to clicks. Keyboard is ignored.

I've found a work-around suitable for technical people only, which is to
Ctrl-Alt-F1, log in, and type pkill -HUP gnome-shell, then log out and
go back with Alt-F7.

At the command prompt, I observed 2 zombie lightdm processes. Not sure
if related. Figured it was a gnome bug because restarting gnome-shell
fixes it.

Having now rolled gnome-shell desktops out in my business to non-
technical users, this is a serious bug: most of them have to do a hard
reset.

[Bug 1046898] [NEW] complete system hang; no response to SysRq

2012-09-06 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

On this (and other) i5 machines, Ubuntu Precise has had daily lock-ups
of this type.

But the problem had gone away, and now this week it's back (happened on
2 consecutive days). I suspect an upgrade around 4/5th Sept made the
change.

Wasn't doing anything unusual or taxing at the time of the lock-up.

Reporting in case there's a patch that's been rolled back or something,
that may be identifiable. Possibly between Ubuntu, with Linux
3.2.0-29-generic and Ubuntu, with Linux 3.2.0-30-generic.

[Bug 1033532] [NEW] Won't load pages. Sits "waiting for example.com"

2012-08-06 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Firefox on the same machine, at the same time, has no problems accessing
webpages. Chromium has a not-quite-every-time habit of hanging, with the
twirly indicator going backwards, saying "Waiting for example.com". It
will sit like that for minutes at a time, sometimes you get a page
loaded, sometimes not.

I know that it is not the webpage in question because (A) it can happen
on any site and (B) some of the sites are mine, so I have monitored the
server load at the time and not observed a problem.

However, what is interesting is that I can click a link in Chromium, go
to my SSH terminal for the server with tail --follow access.log running,
and see that the request is not actually being received (until it is, at
which point, Chromium receives + renders the page at normal speed).

So DNS? I've put the test site in my hosts file, to eliminate this one.
Still the problem exhibits.

yep, inkscape is the only one to have probs. libreoffice, gimp, gnome's
pic viewer, digikam, evince, acrobat reader...

thats why I think it could be a quirk of Inkscape.

cheers for looking into it.

[Bug 1004363] [NEW] package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 1

2012-05-25 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

I had installed fglrx-updates through Jockey, which crashed. I had then
gone to command line and apt-get install fglrx-updates, which didn't
crash. I then rebooted a couple of times and all seemed well.

Then today, with no other changes having happened, Gnome Shell ceased up
on boot, unresponsive to clicks or keyboard, and seemed to be also
holding back wireless connections. fun.

I believe it was in purging fglrx with apt-get that this crash occurred.

I am now back on the hotter and half-speed (according to glx-gears) OS
drivers and have managed to boot fine.

[Bug 993178] Re: Fails to mount CIFS shares after upgrade

2012-05-13 Thread shinyblue
The problem is intermittent; one boot it works, one boot it hangs. I
don't think I could conclusively test that. I've attached a photo of the
kernel errors that come up.

[Bug 998762] [NEW] Cannot read 'this media contains X, wanna open with Y'

2012-05-13 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

With a memory card plugged in Nautilus gives me the view shown in
screenshot attached. I can't read the text because it's offset and
cropped.

(Actually I find these ribbons annoying anyway, and would like to
disable, but suspect that's not a bug).

[Bug 996467] [NEW] Hangs loading pages

2012-05-08 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

Intermittantly Chromium refuses to load a page, saying it's "Waiting for
host", but basically something's up and it will never display the page.
Hit refresh as much as you like, very rarely will this work. Restart the
browser and it will usually work. Obviously this is not always a
suitable option.

Obviously you're going to say "ah ha, maybe it IS the webserver", but I
have firefox along side and it never has any trouble on the same pages
at the same time.

I notice from a google search that this is a frustration with Chrome,
too, on many different platforms. This morning it has happened so
frequently that it has pushed me to submit this bug report because it
was becomming a serious productivity issue for me.

[Bug 993178] [NEW] Fails to mount CIFS shares after upgrade

2012-05-02 Thread shinyblue
Public bug reported:

got a load of kernel failure messages (attached) and can't mount CIFS
shares.

This is critical for me: all my files are on the samba server!
