[Bug 226197] Re: visor module broken in Ubuntu 8.04 LTS's kernel (2.6.24-16)

2008-06-28 Thread sordna
Tom, you are right, the visor kernel module can by bypassed if you use the
libusb library instead.
I got this to work after I downloaded the pilot-link sources and reading the
README.libusb doc.
First I installed "apt-get install libusb-dev" although I don't think it was
absolutely necessary.
The pilot-link sources also come with a 60-libpisock.rules file that needs to
be placed into
/etc/udev/rules.d/ followed by a reboot so it's read by the system.
After that, the command "pilot-xfer -p usb: -l"
prints a message:
Listening for incoming connection on usb:...
instead of saying "Unable to bind to port".
This "Listening" is an indicator that libusb is being used and hitting the
hotsync button
allowed my Garmin iQue 3600 to by synced using ubuntu's 8.04 stock kernel !!!
I'm using pilot-link directly (the pilot-xfer conduit) but I believe the
60-libpisock.rules file should help
users of other software like gnome-pilot since most of them use pilot-link
under the hood.

This nice workaround doesn't mean that the bug I filed does not hold. The visor
module is indeed broken
for kernel 2.6.24 and ubuntu should fix it, or update to the 2.6.25 kernel for
8.04.

I'm sorry, but these 2 bugs are NOT duplicates. They are completely

Sorry, but 273484 has NOTHING to do with 278112.
Bug 273484 is NOT about screensaver. It is about power management.
Please remove the duplication. These 2 bugs are not even related to each

[Bug 277201] [NEW] flash player broken on intrepid-a6 for some sites

2008-10-02 Thread sordna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

When visiting the following URL:
https://www.accountonline.com/Athena/PageServlet/thinclient.prod.xsl?loginlib=loginlib&issuerid=1&brand=Citi
Instead of a login screen, I get this error:
You are currently running Flash player version 1.NaN.
Flash player version 6.40 or later is required.

I am using flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1 amd64
on an Intrepid alpha 6 amd64 installation,
and tried it with firefox-3 firefox-2 and opera. Same problem with all browsers.

It works fine on a 8.04.1 (hardy) i386 installation I have on a different
partition
of the same machine. The flashplugin-non free version on hardy is:

This bug only occurs using nvidia's driver.
Not sure whether nvidia-glx-177 or nvidia-177-kernel-source is the actual
culprit.

[Bug 273484] Re: monitors wont go to sleep

2008-10-08 Thread sordna
I also have the same problem. I am running intrepid alpha6 64bit, and nvidia
driver 177.
Im am using an Asus nvidia EN9500GT PCI-E discrete graphics card. My monitor
is a Hanns.G HG281D LCD panel with HDMI and D-SUB inputs.
The graphics card has dvi, hdmi, and d-sub outputs. My monitor only goes to
sleep properly when I use the dsub connection. When I connect my monitor to the
HDMI or DVI ouputs of the graphics card, the monitor does not go to sleep
properly. Instead, the monitor shows a "No Signal Input" message, but I guess
it's not a complete loss of signal, because the monitor does not go to sleep.
If I disconnect the cable or turn off the computer then the monitor goes to
sleep. I have tried "xset dpms force standby/suspend/off" and they all have the
same effect (monitor's own "signal loss" message screen, but monitor never
actually goes to sleep).

Some interesting points: Using the "nv" driver does not have this
problem (sleep works properly over both DVI and HDMI connection).

Using a different discrete graphics card (EVGA nvidia 8400GS) I don't have this
problem
with either "nv" or nvidia drivers.

I am not using twinview or xinerama, just a single connection to a
single monitor.

My only metamode line was this:
Option "metamodes" "nvidia-auto-select +0+0"

taking it out did not have any effect on the issue.

Here is the monitor/card/screen sections of my xorg.conf:

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Unknown"
ModelName "HSD Hanns.G HG281"
HorizSync 24.0 - 80.0
VertRefresh 56.0 - 75.0
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
BoardName "GeForce 9500 GT"
Option "NoLogo" "true"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor"Monitor0"
DefaultDepth24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Thanks.

I just tried it and it has no effect except lowering my resolution.
I also tried Option "metamodes" "1920x1200" (to match my monitor's
resolution)
but it has no effect on the monitor suspend. It still won't go to sleep.
This has to be looked at by someone who knowns the nvidia driver internals
well.
Why does the "nv" driver suspend my monitor properly, and "nvidia" does not?

Re: [Bug 273484] Re: monitors wont go to sleep

2008-10-13 Thread sordna
I have already tried it without compiz, and it did not make a difference for
me. I also tried different window managers
(and no window manager at all, with just xtrem on a plain X screen) and the
monitor still won't go to sleep properly,
either via xscreensaver or via manually doing xset dpms force
standby/suspend/off.

The only thing that solves the problem is going to the free "nv" driver, at
the cost of performance.
I think someone needs to look at the nvidia driver's dpms calls. It's also
strange that
standby/suspend/off have the exact same behavior. I'm guessing all 3 options
result
in the exact same thing done by the nvidia driver. nvidia folks, can someone
look into this?
We want to protect the environment, and dpms needs to work properly !

compiz is not the problem for me.
Only using the "nv" driver, or using Option "UseEDID" "False" with the
"nvidia" driver
allows my monitor to sleep properly. Both solutions unacceptable of course.

I just added intrepid to my apt sources, downloaded
linux-image-2.6.27-3-generic
to my 8.04 system, installed it and booted it and can confirm the bug has
been
resolved there.
I also did a complete installation of xubuntu (intrepid alpha6)
and the problem in resolved there too (2.6.27-4-generic)
xubuntu is the best ubuntu variant by the way. Does absolutely everything
you need, without the bloat of gnome/kde slowing you down, and has
flexible window focus/raise options (unlike teh regular ubuntu).

Great, I got the update and can confirm linux-image-3.0.0-14-generic
fixes the problem on my C310, and should do the same for the all webcams
in the earlier patch: (C200, C250, C270, C300, C310, B/C500, Pro 9000)

For other webcams like the C600, C905, the E3500 and others, people will
have to wait for ubuntu kernel 3.0.0-15 (assuming will be based on
official linux kernel 3.0.11 or later, which has the latest, more
complete patch)

Not sure if this helps, but on my 64-bit ubuntu machine I was never able
to print to my MF4150 printer, I could only scan with xsane. I tried
many times over the years, with various ubuntu versions, and only
recently, on Ubuntu 13.04 and after upgrading the Canon drivers to v2.70
I was able to print. I don't know if the cups update alone, or the
driver update fixed the problem, but in any case I am very happy and
thankful I am able to print after years of trying ! I upgraded to Saucy
13.10 and am still able to print and share the printer.

2014-04-26 Thread sordna
Can someone verify if they are able to print to the Canon MF4150 printer with
Trusty (14.04) ?
I tried the live CD, installed the canon drivers (tried both 2.70 and 2.80),
restarted cupsd, printer is detected and added fine, but it does not print,
even though there are no errors. Scanning (xsane) works, but printing does
not.

I'm scared to uprade my 13.10 installation because I don't want to lose
ability to print.

Hmm looks like 1312103 is a duplicate of 1271714 now (tiff3 is
disappearing from debian soon)

In any case, I installed 14.04 32-bit on an old laptop, as well as the v2.80
canon drivers and it printed fine.
So I'm hoping that when I upgrade by 64-bit desktop, it will work, although
nothing is certain. The strange thing is the 64-bit live CD could not print.

[Bug 1160638] Re: usb printer works intermittently after upgrade to Precise

2014-04-30 Thread sordna
I did some more testing. The 32-bit trusty live cd can print, the 64-bit live
cd cannot.
In both cases I installed the canon 2.80 drivers
(Linux_UFRII_PrinterDriver_V280_us_EN.tar.gz), and used the 32 bit and 64 bit
deb files respectively from it, after installing the necessary dependencies of
course (apt-get install libglade2-0).

The same drivers (v2.80, 64bit) work on my 64-bit Saucy installation.
So, something's miss with 64-bit trusty as far as this printer is
concerned.

I tried both style printer paths:
usb://Canon/MF4100%20Series?serial=SDF84010x&interface=1
and
cnusb:/dev/usb/lp1

- Both device paths work on 32 bit trusty 14.04
- The longer usb:// path works on 64 bit saucy 13.10
- Nothing works on 64-bit trusty 14.04 (even though when adding printer, it
detects them and chooses the right driver just fine)

No error shows up when I try to print, I just see" Idle - Sending data
to printer" but the printer stays completely idle and unresponsive.

Can someone look into this?

[Bug 944653] Re: compiz crashed on startup with SIGSEGV in strstr() from GLScreen::GLScreen()

2012-11-08 Thread sordna
Hello,
since the fix has been release over a month ago for 12.10, when can we get it
on 12.04 ? A lot of folks want to stay in LTS so it is very important this
gets released for 12.04.

I just tried the proposed packages per the instructions, and do not get
the crash, so I changed the tag to verification-done.

[Bug 944653] Re: compiz crashed on startup with SIGSEGV in strstr() from GLScreen::GLScreen()

2012-11-30 Thread sordna
BTW here is my particular test case to reproduce the bug, it is rather
different from other folks since I only experience the bug when I don't
have the nvidia kernel module loaded, so here goes:

1. Make the nvidia module unavailable, eg: mv
/lib/modules/3.2.0-34-generic/updates/dkms/nvidia_current.ko ~
2. Reboot the machine and login
3. I immediately get the compiz segfault and cannot launch any windows, desktop
is not responsive so I have to kill X and login in console mode
4. Install the proposed packages (compiz-core, compiz-gnome, compiz-plugins,
compiz-plugins-default, libdecoration0, version 1:0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu1) per
instructions
5. Reboot the machine and login
6. I do NOT get the segfault, however compiz fails due to the nvidia module and
relevant extensions not loaded (as expected), but I can launch (undecorated)
windows... there is no crash and this verifies the bug fix for me!
7. Restore the nvidia kernel module in its place
8. Reboot the machine and login
9. Everything works properly

[Bug 944653] Re: compiz crashed on startup with SIGSEGV in strstr() from GLScreen::GLScreen()

2012-11-13 Thread sordna
Thanks Timo! I tried the ppa and updated compiz; indeed the crash is
fixed however the decorator doesn't seem to work when I run kernel
3.2.0-30 or newer.

I don't think this is any worse that the previous version of compiz
though, in which case I got a crash with the same kernels (with kernel
3.2.0-29 both the old and the new compiz work fine for me by the way).

So I have to ask, what changed between kernel 3.2.0-29 and 3.2.0-30 that
causes compiz to either crash, or after this fix, causes the decorator
to not do anything? I even tried compiz-decorator --replace, it finds
and says it starts /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator but to no effect, all
windows I launch are still borderless and the desktop cube is not
rotating (I can't switch to other workspaces).

Am I hitting some other bug? Any pointers welcome!

[Bug 944653] Re: compiz crashed on startup with SIGSEGV in strstr() from GLScreen::GLScreen()

2012-11-13 Thread sordna
Ok, false alarm, for some reason my nvidia kernel module wasn't being built...
I fixed it with 'dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-current'
(found this out by running 'compiz --replace ccp' and seeing messages GLX
extension missing).

Sorry for the noise, but at least I can verify that I did consistently
get a compiz crash that was resolved only after upgrading to version
0.9.7.8+bzr3121-0ubuntu1~test6 from ppa:unity-team/sru

So the fix is good, thanks to all who made it happen and hope to see it
soon in the regular repository for 12.04 LTS.

Is compiz-core/0.9.7 with revision 3120 or later available somewhere as
a .deb package for us to download and try (before it becomes available

[Bug 944653] Re: compiz crashed on startup with SIGSEGV in strstr() from GLScreen::GLScreen()

2012-09-10 Thread sordna
I started having this problem after upgrading my kernel from
3.2.0-29-generic to 3.2.0-30-generic few days ago.

Booting back to 3.2.0-29-generic resolves the problem.

I am running 64-bit Xubuntu version 12.04 with latest standard updates
(compiz version 0.9.7.8-0ubuntu1.4 / nvidia-current 295.40-0ubuntu1.1 )
and for weeks have been applying updates including kernels without
problems, until 3.2.0-30-generic came along which triggers this problem
for me.

[Bug 858412] Re: Regression: Logitech webcam microphone makes "chipmunk" sound after Oneiric beta upgrade

2011-10-13 Thread sordna
I am using oneiric, linux-image-3.0.0-12-generic 3.0.0-12.20 (latest) and have
this same problem with a Logitech C310 webcam.
Apart from archlinux already mentioned, even redhat has this bug fixed!!! Here
is the diff:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=517377&action=diff

Please fix this in Ubuntu as well, just copy the patch from arch or
redhat.

Yes, it's a kernel bug but who knows when it will be fixed, even the latest
3.1-rc4 kernel doesn't have the fix.
Please apply the patch to the oneiric ubuntu kernels, like redhat and archlinux
are doing for some time now.
These are extremely popular cameras, and it's very embarassing to sound like
mickey mouse with skype on oneiric installations.
How soon can you apply the patch?

2011-10-14 Thread sordna
heitjan, sl45sms, anyone else, what's your webcam's usb id? I just realized
that the bug originator's camera was not included in the patch, so I'm adding
it, please do lsusb and supply your webcam id if it's not found in the
following patch.
For example, Webcam Pro 9000 is in the below patch, but the Quickcam Pro 9000
is not (usb id 046d:0990) but we can't be sure it's affected by the bug unless
we hear about it. For now I added the Webcam C600 (046d:0808).

2011-10-14 Thread sordna
Found duplicates of this bug about other webcams and added a few more
(including the C260) to the patch. So this will be a more complete fix
than arch/redhat have, but they were faster to actually release the fix,
hopefully Ubuntu will pick this up soon and relieve us from this serious
webcam issue.

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-10-14 Thread sordna
Adding patch that fixes the issue. Patch taken from kernel bug #35922 as
well as archlinux and redhat who already fixed the issue in their
kernels. I added many more affected cameras in the present patch. I hope
we see it applied to oneiric kernels soon, otherwise the wikis that
report how nicely all these Logitech cameras play with linux should be
rewritten because the audio has been terribly broken, while it worked
fine with natty.

I have the exact same problem, your screenshot looks exactly like what I'm
getting. I even tried capturing a photo with cheese, and the resulting image
file has most of the colors missing too, it's not just the live video that has
the issue.
I also get several these messages repeated when I start cheese from a shell:

contain one widget at a time; it already contains a widget of type

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-10-17 Thread sordna
To apply the patch you need to download the attachment, and also have the
latest kernel source downloaded (apt-get source linux-image-3.0.0-12-generic).
Then you would apply the patch as follows:
patch linux-3.0.0/drivers/usb/core/quirks.c < 843431.patch
and build/install the kernel as usual... if you're not familiar with kernel
building you would need to look it up !
I'll just post what I did on my quad core box (I like to compile up to 4
objects concurrently to build the kernel faster), I build the kernel into image
& headers deb files, which I then install with dpkg, then reboot.

cd linux-3.0.0
sudo CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 make-kpkg --initrd kernel-image kernel-headers
cd ..
dpkg -i linux-image-3.0.4_3.0.4-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.0.4_3.0.4-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-10-27 Thread sordna
Jay, are you sure? I just tried that kernel, but still get the chipmunk
sound on skype. At first, I didn't get any sound at all, then I
unplegged and plugged my webcam in, and got the chipmunk sound. Also I
keep getting the telltale messages in dmesg... basically I don't see any
difference in the 3.1 final kernel, so I think you just got lucky... the
bug is 90% reproducible anyway, there are rare times that you start your
computer and the webcam works. Please try it a few times, just use the
skype test calling service to hear your own voice.

glococo, please don't post about the picture / camera color issues in
this bug (which is about the sound speedup only), subscribe to bug
875716 instead which is about the colors under cheese... I am hit by
that bug too, but they are not related.

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-11-22 Thread sordna
Some good news, official kernel 3.0.9 contains patches that fix this issue for
several of the
affected webcams (C200, C250, C270, C300, C310, B/C500, Pro 9000),
so the patch posted here doesn't need to by applied to the oneiric kernel,
we just need the oneiric kernel updated to a newer version.
I believe the latest oneiric kernel 3.0.0-13 corresponds to official linux
kernel 3.0.6 ...
How soon can Ubuntu maintainers update the next oneiric kernel to be based on
3.0.9 ?

You can see 2 relevant patches mentioned here:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v3.0/ChangeLog-3.0.9

2011-11-23 Thread sordna
The webcams I did not list, such as the C905, which are in the patch posted
here, will be covered in kernel 3.0.11,
so with the 3.0.9 ( which corresponds to upcoming ubuntu kernel 3.0.0-14
according to this mapping table:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/info/kernel-version-map.html )
you'll need to keep using on of the workarounds.

[Bug 753144] Re: focused, or maximized windows blank

2011-11-23 Thread sordna
I just tried the 290.10 package but it doesn't solve the other issue I'm seeing
(when the compiz desktop cube finishes a rotation,
the windows of the previous face re-appear for a split second).

Sam Spilsbury in comment #157 said he has a fix, Sam, what's the status
on that one? Is there a more relevant bug report to follow about this?

[Bug 896780] [NEW] cdfs-src doesn't build on oneiric

2011-11-26 Thread sordna
Public bug reported:

I'm running oneiric (amd64) with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

If I try to build cdfs with "m-a build" it tries to build 2.4 instead of
2.6 and fails because it can't find some header files.

If I go to the cdfs/2.6 subdirectory and type "sudo make" I get errors because
get_sb_bdev does not exist in kernel 3.0,
I believe it has been renamed to mount_bdev. Basically, cdfs-src needs to be
updated for oneiric / kernel 3.0
Please look into it!

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

Sergey, the Hercules Dualpix webcap fix is in the 3.0.0-14 kernel, to
get the ID do: lsusb on a terminal and you should see a device with ID
06f8:0804

Carlos, the B500 fix is in this kernel as well. I suspect you are having
some other issue or haven't configured the applications correctly.
Maybe you need to use pavucontrol and asociatiate your webcam to your
applications.

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-12-19 Thread sordna
Serge, you are right, looks like the patch had the ID of the Hercules Dualpix
Exchange wrong as you can see here:
http://kernel.opensuse.org/cgit/kernel/commit/?id=2394d67e446bf616a0885167d5f0d397bdacfdfc

The patch says USB_DEVICE(0x06f8, 0x0804) but it should instead say
USB_DEVICE(0x06f8, 0x3005)
I suggest you email the 2 people you see in the Sign-Off line of the above
patch, and ask them to fix it. This should be fixed in the official Linux
Kernel rather Ubuntu.

For me upgrading to oneiric solved the issue, but please note I am using

I noticed this bug when I upgraded from Natty to Oneiric, however it has
went away a few weeks, probably due to some update? I haven' been paying
close attention, but I don't see it anymore.

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-11-11 Thread sordna
Joseph, I tested the 3.2-rc1-oneiric candidate you pointed to, and it
resolves the issue for my Logitech Webcam C310 webcam.

By they way, with the affected kernels, apart from the workaround
already posted (putting "default-sample-rate = 16000" in
~/.pulse/daemon.conf)

I learned of another workaround; passing the following option to the
kernel on boot time: usbcore.autosuspend=-1

This workaround works well. Of course it turns off the feature than
allows USB devices to "autosuspend" to reduce energy consumption when
not in use.

I suspect the patch's whitespace was malformed while you saved it. Copy the URL
and download it with wget.
Alternatively, add the relevant line that matches your camera's id to quirks.c
manually (without including the leading '+' character from the patch of course)

[Bug 843431] Re: Logitech camera microphone does not work / makes "chipmunk" sound

2011-10-20 Thread sordna
As long as you have the "linux-image-generic" package installed, it will
always "depend" on the latest official ubuntu kernel, so you'll still be
getting kernel updates. Even if that was not the case, you can always
have multiple kernels at any time, they will appear in your grub menu to
choose from when you boot. And you can remove kernel packages you no
longer need, any time. Anyway this bug report is not the place to
discuss kernel building (there's plenty of resources all over the
Internet for that), the purpose I posted the patch is for Ubuntu folks
to pick it up so we all avoid kernel building.

At this point, I think all we (users) should be providing is our
affected camera usb id's if the are NOT in the patch already, to be
added, and hopefully convince Ubuntu folks to resolve this bug soon... I
can't believe redhat fixed it already, and Ubuntu hasn't yet!

Anyway, what is kernel 3.1.0-999-generic ? Where do I download it so I can

I tested the latest mainline kernel yesterday: kernel-

persists in skype, my voice is speeded up like 300% and is
incomprehensible.

I wish Kurt provides more info about the mysterious 3.1.0-999-generic

[Bug 488318] Re: Excessive Log Files

2017-10-28 Thread sordna
There is a simple configuration bug, seeing it in 16.04 and 17.10 so it's
everywhere.
The fix is VERY SIMPLE TOO.

The logrotate config script wants to rotate logfile:
/var/log/mediatomb.log

But mediatomb is run with -l /var/log/mediatomb

The package maintainer should make them consistent. I downloaded the
source and see this:

mediatomb-0.12.1-47-g7ab7616$ grep -r log/mediatomb .
./config/mediatomb-conf-fedora:MT_LOGFILE="/var/log/mediatomb"
./config/mediatomb-conf-optware:MT_LOGFILE="/opt/var/log/mediatomb"
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.default:MT_LOGFILE="/var/log/mediatomb"
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.upstart:env LOGFILE=/var/log/mediatomb.log
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.logrotate:"/var/log/mediatomb.log" {
./debian/mediatomb-daemon.postrm:rm -rf /var/log/mediatomb
/var/log/mediatomb* \
./mediatomb.spec.in:/var/log/mediatomb {

Either mediatomb-daemon.mediatomb.default or mediatomb-
daemon.mediatomb.logrotate should be updated so they both call the
logfile with the same filename! Take your pick how the logfile should
be named but make it consistent across the startup and logrotate
configuration files :-)

Please fix asap now that the fix is finally identified, the bug has been
open for too many years.

[Bug 488318] Re: Excessive Log Files

2017-10-30 Thread sordna
Hi Robie, I really appreciate your response. I subscribed you because "apt
changelog" in my ubuntu 16.04 system shows you were the last person to update
this package, so I thought you are the maintainer.
The bug you referenced is not the same (that bug is about mediatomb writing to
the same logfile even after it is rotated to .1 etc)

The bug I am noticing is different: In ubuntu, mediatomb's logrotate
config references "/var/log/mediatomb.log" but the startup script
references "/var/log/mediatomb" so it does not get rotated at all.

All that is needed is to make them consistent by changing one of these 2
files.

Having said that, debian bug 633803 seems to affect Ubuntu as well, so there
are 2 things to be fixed here. Thanks for pointing out there is a fork
(gerbera) https://gerbera.io/
I am noticing even http://mediatomb.cc/ says development stopped and people
should check out gerbera.
So I guess this is not worth fixing in mediatomb.

To anyone interested, here is the workaround to stop mediatomb from writing to
the same logfile forever:
Edit /etc/logrotate.d/mediatomb and change: "/var/log/mediatomb.log" to:
"/var/log/mediatomb"
and "invoke-rc.d mediatomb reload" to: "invoke-rc.d mediatomb restart"

[Bug 652138] Re: lucid->maverick rtl8192 stops working

2010-10-10 Thread sordna
Same with my Samsung n510. Lucid (2.6.32-25) worked. With Maverick (2.6.35-22)
I see the list of wireless networks, but it cannot associate with any of them,
whether they are password protected or not.
I see some messages like this in my dmesg by the way:
rtl819xE:Download Firmware: Put code fail!
rtl819xE:ERR in CPUcheck_maincodeok_turnonCPU()
rtl819xE:Err in init_firmware()
rtl819xE:Err!!! NicIFEnableNIC(): initialization is failed!

I also noticed that both r8192e_pci and r8192se_pci were loaded. I tried
blacklisting each one (so only the other would be loaded). I tried both ways.
Now I keep r8192se_pci blacklisted, and I can get r8192e_pci to work
*occasionally* by unloading, waiting for a while, and loading it.
So this driver is very unstable, at least on this laptop. Even with lucid,
while the driver worked every time, often it would stop working after waking up
from suspend and only a reboot would fix it.

[Bug 798545] [NEW] raise/lower window turns window white since last update

2011-06-17 Thread sordna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I have assigned raise/lower windows in the general settings to some extra
buttons in my mouse.
Since the last update (to version 1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu1~natty1) whenever
I raise (or lower) a window, the entire window (except the decorator) becomes
white. It happens with terminal windows, browser, whatever. I have to drag the
window a little bit to make the window contents visible again. I am using XFCE,
compiz, and emerald on a 64-bit natty installation.

[Bug 120687] Re: Caseless collate sequence in en_GB.UTF8

2011-03-24 Thread sordna
Looks like this affects programs such as GNU grep and egrep ... note I'm using
quotes around the A-Z character class to avoid any shell interference:
$ echo hello | grep '[A-Z]'
hello

The above behavior COMPLETELY WRONG AND UNACCEPTABLE. I am utterly
shocked I have to worry change my default environment to do a simple
task such as identifying upper case characters with grep. Note I'm using
en_US.UTF-8 (not en_GB).

LC_COLLATE should default to C under all circumstances, unless the user
explicitly wants grep and other programs to behave in a totally weird
and unexpected way. Even better, perhaps libc should treat an undefined
LC_COLLATE same as being C.

Either way, regular expressions should be honored in a sane linux / unix
operating system. Users should not have to jump through hoops to make a
fresh installed system behave in a normal, unsuprising way.

[Bug 573787] Re: Evince does not start in LTSP environments

I'm getting a similar error in my non-LTSP lucid xubuntu but the following
thread provided a solution:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1312025

Copying the relevant bit for you to try:

From: zoro98020 Re: evince issues after upgrade to 9.10 karmic koala
OK, seems to be something to do with AppArmor.

In /etc/apparmor.d I have among other things:
disable/
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2052 2009-11-11 01:03 usr.bin.evince
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4866 2009-10-28 08:50 usr.bin.firefox-3.5

In dir disable I find:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 2009-10-31 10:36 usr.bin.firefox-3.5 ->
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox-3.5

I added evince to disable
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 30 2009-11-27 09:37 usr.bin.evince ->
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.evince

restart AppArmor:
/etc/init.d/apparmor restart

Does it solve the problem in the LTSP environment? It did in my xubuntu
desktop.
