[Bug 369012] Re: Firefox instability after security update, before restart
Yes, a more informative notification would be great. [Bug 371093] [NEW] [wishlist] Click to dismiss
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: notify-osd Currently (and by design), the notifications in notify-osd cannot be clicked on. Instead, the notification becomes translucent and the click is propagated to the application below it. The problem with this design decision is that before hovering over the notification the user cannot see with any clarity what is underneath it, making it hard to aim the mouse in the correct direction. Instead, the user must hover over the notification, look for the widget he wants to interact with, then click on it. Even worse, when the user types on a text field that is beneath the notification (like Firefox's search field), the translucency of the notification above it adds unnecessary visual clutter, hindering legibility. Additionally, there currently is no way dismiss a notification pop-up -- except for waiting it out. I propose that the notification pop-up become click-aware. Upon a left- click the notification should be dismissed, giving the user the ability to freely interact with anything that was previously covered by it. ** Affects: notify-osd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [wishlist] Click to dismiss https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/371093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 291863] Re: [Intrepid] Connecting to SSH server with Nautilus. Can't transfer file because "free space: 0 bytes" (gvfs bug ?)
I'm having the same problem. It seems that Nautilus now tries to work around this issue by redirecting you to the "sftp://hostname"; equivalent of the "~/.gvfs/sftp on hostname" address. For example: 1) connect to some ssh server on Nautilus 2) type "~/.gvfs/sftp on hostname" on the location bar 3) press Ctrl+L to show the address and notice that the location bar changed to "sftp://hostname"; The problem is that this solution creates inconsistencies, as it breaks your bookmarks in gvfs-unaware programs. Try this, for example: 1) connect to some ssh server on Nautilus 2) bookmark "~/.gvfs/sftp on hostname" by dragging it to the places sidebar 3) open Firefox, click on File > Save Page As 4) notice that your new bookmark is not on the file browser!! As a work-around, I created a symbolic link to my "~/.gvfs/sftp on hostname" folder, and bookmarked *that* instead. But then, while this works just fine on Firefox, it does not on Nautilus. Instead, when I try to copy a file to the symbolic link, Nautilus acts as originally described in this bug report, saying "There is not enough space on the destination. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: lock-keys-applet It would be useful if the lock-keys applet had the capability to display on-screen notifications of the toggle events of each lock key. The rationale behind this is that: 1) Wireless keyboards (which often have no LEDs) are becoming increasingly popular 2) Screens are getting larger and larger, so the lock-keys applet icon is often quite far from the entry-box where the user is typing. I've had the same problem for a long time now (since edgy, maybe before) but I believe I managed to find a temporary solution. Before I go on, I must say that NetworkManager 0.6.5 **did not** fix the issue for me. But then I noticed that my logs always mentioned something about IPv6 near the place where the re-connects were occurring. So I decided to try turning off IPv6 by editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases, changing the line... alias net-pf-10 ipv6 ...to... alias net-pf-10 off ipv6 ...then I restarted the computer. It's been running fine for 2 days now. [Bug 158481] IPv6 causes wireless to disconnect/reconnect often
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager I have had the following bug since Ubuntu 6.10: - I connect to a wireless network with Network Manager (doesn't matter whether it's hidden or has any type of encryption) - After a few minutes my connection goes down (usually around 10-30 minutes) - I can immediately see nm-applet trying to reconnect or connect to another network My computer is a Thinkpad T60 with an Atheros-based internal wireless interface (more specifically, AR5212 802.11abg NIC) using the default MadWifi drivers that are shipped with Ubuntu. This is a big problem when doing long downloads, or using SSH or VNC. At times, nm-applet would even fail to reconnect to any of the available networks, requiring me to restart the NetworkManager process by hand. This does not happen on the same machine when running Windows, so malfunctioning hardware and anything external to the computer are obviously not the underlying cause. Other (Windows) computers on the same wireless networks operate without any problems. Also, the problem survived through clean installs of Ubuntu 7.04 and, later, 7.10. So this is not an issue related to my specific settings. After a while looking for a solution for almost 1 year, I finally found a temporary fix: to disable IPv6. I'm not sure *why* this works, but the fact is that it *does*. I've been happily using my WiFi now for 20 days without a single reconnect. This is how I disabled it: - edit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases - change line "alias net-pf-10 ipv6" to "alias net-pf-10 off ipv6" - reboot I explained these steps on another bug report (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/64173), but since I'm not sure whether the original poster's bug was related to mine, I figured it would be better to open a brand new one. ** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- IPv6 causes wireless to disconnect/reconnect often https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158481 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The low signal reading is actually a known problem with the madwifi drivers (used for the atheros chips). This is "fixed" in the gnome-network-preferences tool, which adjusts the readings from madwifi. [Bug 3581] Re: New ext3 partitions should not have max-mount count
In my opinion, the best solution is to make fsck run on *shutdown* rather than on boot-up. The rationale behind this is that people usually turn on their computers to do something with it. At those times, people want their computers to boot up as fast as possible. Conversely, people usually do not shut down their computer to do something to it. I have this problem with GVFS 0.2.5-0ubuntu2 in both gvfs-mount and Nautilus. [Bug 93613] Re: gnome-session: malloc() memory corruption
I've been getting the same error here after a clean feisty install. Well, the install was not *entirely* clean since I kept my home partition with all its hidden configuration files. Anyways, when I press the OK button on the "Your session lasted (...)" dialog box, X restarts and gives me the gdm login screen again. If I do not click OK (that is, if I leave the warning on the screen), I can use the computer normally. The only thing I cannot do is run gnome-session-properties, but that's understandable because gnome-session is probably not running. [Bug 93613] Re: gnome-session: malloc() memory corruption
Ok, this is solved for me, but I'm not sure what did it. Browsing the Ubuntu forums I found the problem may be a permissions issue. They mentioned it could be the permissions/user/group on the .ICEauthority file, but I don't think that was the case for me. I even deleted the file (it comes back, so that's ok) but the problem persisted. So I created a new user and saw that everything worked for him. I, then, compared the everything I could (with 'ls -al') between my user and the new one and couldn't find any differences. So I moved all my hidden folders into a temporary folder with 'mkdir ~/hidden && mv .* ~/hidden'. Then I logged in and it was all good. Next I slowly started moving things back from the hidden folder. I'll let you know which folder was the problematic one, but if it's .gconf, i'm not descending into its subfolders! -- gnome-session: malloc() memory corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93613 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 93613] Re: gnome-session: malloc() memory corruption
Well, here's how it turned out: due to a few other issues I was having I just decided to rename my home folder and reinstall feisty. After that, I moved all my files back and most of my hidden config directories. I *did not* move .gconf, .gnome, and .gnome2 back. At that point, everything worked perfectly. Then I started apt-getting my favorite software. At some point, yesterday, after I thought the problem was finally dealt with, I got the same "Your session lasted (...)" message. It was happening every time I logged in after that. Since I had just installed the mail notification sys-tray applet, I decided to go into its preferences and unselect "autostart mail notification upon session opening". It worked. The problem went away. Every time I re-select that option, the problem comes back. This is very strange because the .xsession-errors file does not mention that program at all. In any case, I just thought someone else may want to know that, at least in my case, it seems the mail notification applet is the culprit. -- gnome-session: malloc() memory corruption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93613 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 121793] "lock screen" option doesn't work (always locks)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver Steps to reproduce: 1) go to "system > preferences > screensaver" 2) uncheck "lock screen when screensaver is active" 3) close Then, when the screensaver goes on and you move the mouse or press a key to resume your session, you are prompted for your password even though the checkbox in step (2) is unchecked. I solved this by changing the gnome-power-manager options like so: I opened gconf-editor, navigated to "/apps/gnome-power-manager/" then unchecked "lock_on_blank_screen" and checked "lock_use_screensaver_settings". so now the screen locking follows the behavior set in the screensaver gui as it should have in the first place. That is, I could play music, Alt-Tab, switch desktops, listen to audio from Flash sites, all at the same time. [Bug 269656] Re: AN IRRELEVANT LICENSE IS PRESENTED TO YOU FREE-OF-CHARGE ON STARTUP
Here are the options as I see them: 1) If you don't have a problem with EULAs in general: 1.1) Show the EULA as a popup window (what is currently implemented) 1.2) Show the EULA during the Ubuntu installation 1.3) Show a better popup explaining the EULA in plain English, and with a button to install an alternative browser 1.4) Show the EULA in a tab or in the default home page. 2) If you do oppose EULAs the only option is to have another browser installed by default. This browser could be: 2.1) Epiphany 2.2) IceWeasel 2.3) abrowser 2.4) An Ubuntu-branded version of Firefox Option 1.1 is the worst possible choice in my opinion. To reach a consensus, Canonical and the Ubuntu community have to decide whether or not EULAs are acceptable. If they are, then Options 1.2 or 1.4 present a minimal amount of annoyance to the end user. If EULAs are deemed unacceptable, then I vote for Option 2.4: the Ubuntu brand is a strong one and the names "IceWeasel" or "abrowser" don't particularly inspire much confidence. [Bug 188790] Re: Can't browse sftp
I have this problem with GVFS 0.2.5-0ubuntu2 in both gvfs-mount and Nautilus. It seems to be due to an offending RSA key, as shown below: When I logged in through the terminal with SSH, I got the following message: Warning: the RSA host key for 'X' differs from the key for the IP address 'X' Offending key for IP in /home/X/.ssh/known_hosts:8 Matching host key in /home/X/.ssh/known_hosts:25 Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)? yes (everything went fine after this) To make GVFS work all I had to do was delete line 8 in my known_hosts file. Changing back to *Fix released* A fix was released upstream 4 days ago. I haven't tested it yet, though. http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=545445 I believe the other fix mentioned by Oliver Gerlich (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gvfs/+bug/188790/comments/7) only applies to "connecting to the server for the first time". That is, it just shows a "Add fingerprint to database?"-type dialog. [Bug 94148] Re: atheros wifi card drop connection and low signal
The low signal reading is actually a known problem with the madwifi drivers (used for the atheros chips). Madwifi reports their signal can go all the way up to 94, when in reality it goes up to (something like) 60. This is "fixed" in the gnome-network-preferences tool, which adjusts the readings from madwifi. The problem is that network-manager does not incorporate the same "fix", so the result is that you cannot trust its signal strength indicator. -- atheros wifi card drop connection and low signal https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/94148 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 158481] Re: IPv6 causes wireless to disconnect/reconnect often
After 3 days of use, I finally got 1 (just one!!) crash. Since it's not happening nearly as often as it used to, I'm not sure if its the same issue. The relevant part of the syslog is attached (i deleted lines upon lines of "-- MARK --" from the beginning of the file). At 11:54 it appears that nm received a "signal 15". I'm not sure what that is, but I had been reading an article online for the previous 5 minutes, so it was not any user interaction that caused signal 15 to be emitted. ** Attachment added: "syslog.snap" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10751286/syslog.snap -- IPv6 causes wireless to disconnect/reconnect often https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/158481 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
