[Bug 1590212] [NEW] fcitx does not save global configuration across sessions

2016-06-07 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

In fcitx configuration->Global Config tab, there is a setting "Extra key
for trigger input method". This is by default set to "shift both", but I
like to set it to disabled. However, every time I log out and log back
in, this setting reverts to the default.

[Bug 1442095] [NEW] Network-manager network information display does not show SLAAC addresses

2015-04-09 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

I have a network where my IPv6 address is auto-configured using SLAAC
(with privacy extensions). Everything works fine, but when I check the
Information panel from network-manager, it only includes the IPv4
addresses. Apparently IPv6 addresses were never picked up on? All it
shows is IPv6 and then the dialog window ends.

The network info (partially redacted):

[Bug 986524] Re: radeon 0000:02:00.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than 10000msec

2013-09-26 Thread wdesmet
Not sure if this is the same bug, but mine starts slightly differently, i.e.:
kernel: [79731.820027] radeon :01:00.0: GPU lockup CP stall for more than
1msec
kernel: [79731.820033] radeon :01:00.0: GPU lockup (waiting for

kernel: [79731.820093] [drm:radeon_cs_ib_chunk] *ERROR* Failed to schedule IB !

kernel: [79731.821373] radeon :01:00.0: couldn't schedule ib

And then just keeps going. After a while, it will start to output lines about
failed allocations:
kernel: [79799.398689] [drm:radeon_gem_object_create] *ERROR* Failed to
allocate GEM object (14327808, 6, 4096, -12)

kernel: [79799.398971] [drm:radeon_gem_object_create] *ERROR* Failed to
allocate GEM object (14327808, 6, 4096, -12)

The system quickly becomes unusable when this happens. The only solution
is to reboot and wait till it happens again. It seems to always happen
while scrolling or selecting text in google chrome (which I imagine can
be taxing on some sites).

[Bug 1199357] [NEW] completion broken for export

2013-07-09 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

I initially asked a question about this on Ask Ubuntu:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/317667/tab-completing-directories-when-
exporting-variables-in-bash-4-2

The problem is that when I try to complete while exporting a variable that
contains a directory name, I get the following:
$ export VAR=/home/wTAB
$ export /home/wds

While correct behaviour would give me:
$ export VAR=/home/wds

The completion is handled by the script in
/usr/share/bash-completion/completions/export, which installs a function
_export, seen when running complete -p export which gives:
complete -F _export export

Remove the bash-completion package solves the problem, but of course I'm
now missing all those other completions I might want.

I think you're right. I just tested and it got through the indexing step
without problems. It did seem well before but I believe that was because
it was not indexing at those times. So hopefully this has indeed already
been fixed. Thank you.

[Bug 1060151] [NEW] In-kernel nullpointer dereference triggered by user-space program

2012-10-02 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

With the latest version of ubuntu I'm seeing problems with intellij idea
getting stuck at times (seemingly on file I/O). When I killed the
process and restarted it, during the scanning of files it does at
startup the screen switched to a framebuffer with the output in
attachment.

I could switch back to vt7 okay and continue working though (did not reboot
before reporting this). This bug appears related to #1047261, since I still now
and then see output like:
ecryptfs_encrypt_page: Error attempting to write lower page; rc = [-5]
in syslog.

I'm sorry I do not have a more specific testcase, the code it was trying
to load in (including maven artifacts) you can find at
https://github.com/wdesmet/grs-web

Attached is everything from the header line:

[Bug 1060151] Re: In-kernel nullpointer dereference triggered by user-space program

2012-10-02 Thread wdesmet
Forgot to mention, I believe it's related to the fsnotifier64 binary
IDEA uses to scan and index files. Restarting the application works, but
it gets stuck while trying to execute that there, so it seems to be
doing something ecryptfs just can't deal with.

I have the same problem and noticed it in the same way. Only happened

[Bug 1045429] [NEW] Screen keeps reverting to fully dimmed state

2012-09-03 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

I'm reporting this here because it is very similar to bug #872932, on
different hardware (dell latitude e6510).

Ubuntu keeps dimming the screen, seemingly at random times. If I go into
the options to Brightness and Lock it still shows the requested
brightness level, but I have to change it to get back to that brightness
level (by moving the slider or FN+brightness keys).

The option to Dim screen to save power is turned off. The problem
occurs both when plugged in and when not.

[Bug 1006752] [NEW] memory leak leads to extremely high memory usage

2012-05-31 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Leaving this desktop PC running overnight, while logged in and a bunch
of windows open, compiz tends to get completely out of control. This
morning I arrived to it using 5500MB of RAM (pushing some of the system
into swap and making everything extremely slow). This makes the system
unusable (as compiz and the memory heavy applications running don't fit
into RAM anymore, using the desktop is just not viable...)

The workaround is to kill -KILL compiz whenever it happens.

[Bug 912154] [NEW] File transfers to galaxy nexus fail

2012-01-05 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

When trying to transfer a directory to a galaxy nexus using MTP, I continually
receive the following error message:
Error creating directory: File exists

No such file shows up in the file browser though. The same problem
presents itself when trying to create dirs manually (using mkdir).
Trying to create files (using touch) seems to work only partially, first
there is an error message;

touch: setting times of `test': Function not implemented
(probably logical due to the nature of MTP)

But then when performing ls on the directory, it takes ages (10s) and
the file that was just created does not show up.

[Bug 809243] [NEW] cannot use DFS links on a cifs mount

2011-07-12 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

I'm trying to use a cifs shared directory which uses a global namespace
with several links to different servers.

When I mount the separate shared directories directly, i.e.
//server/globalshare/localshare/ everything works, but mounting the
global share only allows me to see the global links.

i.e. when I use mount.cifs:
mount -t cifs //server/globalshare test/ -o user=...
I get success. Then try to ls (a non-cached directory):
$ ls -l test/
ls: cannot read symbolic link test/home: Object is remote
(followed by a listing that shows the link)

Trying to ls home/:
$ ls test/home
ls: cannot open directory test/home: Not a directory

Workaround: mounting home/ directly does work, but it kind of defeats
the point of the global namespace.

While trying to browse through I also sometimes get the following message in
syslog:
cifs.upcall: Usage: cifs.upcall [-t] [-v] key_serial

But this is perhaps just cifs.upcall complaining about the key-
request.conf still containing a -c parameter, which is now deprecated,
according to the manpage.

Package: cifs-utils 2:4.5-2

[Bug 702780] [NEW] useradd documentation has minor problem with -o option

2011-01-14 Thread wdesmet

The manpage for useradd states, under the -o option:

This line must be from a different option somewhere or the result of

[Bug 695654] [NEW] import from folder does not import files to music folder, fails on removable disks

2010-12-30 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

When importing, most options, such as import from media player or CD,
actually copy the files over. Import from folders doesn't do this.
Moreover, when you import files from a removable disk, remove that disk,
then rescan music library, banshee will lock up. While the choice to not
always copy over is understandable, this means there's no way to easily
copy over and organize files, having to rely on other tools instead, nor
is it consistent with the phrasing and other uses of the import
function.

[Bug 614269] Re: x locks up after putting display to sleep and at random instances

2010-08-25 Thread wdesmet
I will do as soon as I reproduce it again. I haven't found a reliable
way to trigger it so this might take a while. It seems to me this is an
interaction with the DRM code, meaning the kernel locks up completely
and logging just stops, so it's possible nothing ever gets written to
the log file to give any indication to the problem. Which, I realise,
makes this a very hard problem to track down.

It does seem to happen more reliably when the machine is under load. I
don't really see it happening when I'm just letting my laptop run, but
when I have some remote session open, a few browser windows, my mail
etc, it seems to happen a lot more quickly.

[Bug 614269] [NEW] x locks up after putting display to sleep and at random instances

2010-08-06 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

On this laptop I have frequent issues with X hanging up. It hangs in two
(possibly not related) ways:
1) When in power management put display to sleep... is enabled, letting it go
to sleep will frequently make it lock up. Input will not bring the screen back
up and the machine no longer responds to pings etc. No particular output is
logged in syslog.
2) at seemingly random times the display will corrupt (showing a repeating
pattern, for example just a couple green/blue lines repeated over the length of
the screen) and the machine becomes unresponsive.

I've not been able to track down the source, though at this point I'm
pretty sure it's related to the drivers and not the hardware (have
replaced some of it). It happens pretty consistently, at least a couple
times a day when intensively using the machine, usually with several
apps such as eclipse and firefox open. It's been a problem since at
least the previous release.

This is an ati radeon xpress 1100 card in an acer 5102WLMi laptop
running on lucid with version 1:6.13.0-1ubuntu5 of the driver.

Oddly enough this also affects the propietary drivers. I wonder whether
there's a workaround, as I can't seem to find much other instances of
this problem reported elsewhere?

[Bug 590181] [NEW] banshee play queue resets back to original after logging out without exiting

2010-06-05 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

I noticed recently that whenever I start banshee the play queue reverts
back to what it was before I shut down. Apparently when logging out,
banshee doesn't update the stored play queue settings cleanly. If I
manually quit and then start banshee, it does save the current state of
the play queue, which is what is getting restored whenever I quit
banshee by simply logging out of gnome.

I believe banshee is probably not shutting down cleanly when logging out
and doesn't manage to write out the current state of the play queue when
killing it this way.

[Bug 540332] Re: eclipse: tooltips unreadable

2010-05-11 Thread wdesmet
I'd just like to add that a secondary problem is the javadoc display.
This also uses a black background, with white text. The problem being
that links are using dark blue, which is unreadable on pure black.

[Bug 576288] [NEW] second screen in dualhead setup doesn't refresh properly until reconfigured

2010-05-06 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When logging in, each time the background on the right screen in my
dualhead setup doesn't seem to repaint properly. Whenever I drag a
window over it, it's showing trails of the window, indicating that the
background is broken. I can also not right click on the background to
get the nautilus menu (create Folder etc.). Going into preferences and
disabling, then re-enabling the right monitor fixes it, until the next
restart of X.

It seems very similar to bug #378482, reported against the intel video
drivers, but since fixed apparently.

[Bug 572310] [NEW] font rendering of shaded text unreadable

2010-04-30 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

In ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10, when rendering text that has a background
shading, this shading shows up as a dark blocky background, making the
text unreadable. I will attach a screenshot with an example (one of
many) in firefox. It also shows up in other places throughout the OS,
such as when switching to a new song in banshee, on the fade in/fade out
effects.

I previously reported this against the wrong package and a worse
description as #502336.

I initially thought this was related to not using compiz, but I am using
compiz (desktop effects) and it is still rendering wrongly. My machines
happen to all be running (different) ati cards.

[Bug 150690] Re: Can't drag a window to another workspace

2010-04-09 Thread wdesmet
This only affects the workplace switcher applet, which I thought windows
didn't have? You can still move windows between desktops using the
option menu or the keyboard shortcut (ctr-alt-shift left/right). Or just
dragging them to the edge of the screen.

Not that I don't think it's important to fix something like this (a
thousand paper cuts and all that), but there's no need for the
hyperbole.

doesn't seem to have had much in the way of updates(? not sure). In any
case, before it can go to full release it still has to enter beta.
Considering the 32 bit flash player 10.1 is currently at beta 3, a 64
bit version would probably also need to go through 3 beta stages. Since
the beta process takes months, I do not think an official release of 64
bit flash is close. Especially considering adobe only has a single
developer working on linux flash, AFAIK.

So it is important to try and either fix up the 32 bit embedded version
of the player (or write a new one ourselves), since it will definitely
be around for quite a while.

NB: I believe this bug is reported upstream as
https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FP-2609

[Bug 544888] [NEW] Openjdk + icedtea6 plugin fails to load parameters from jnlp files

2010-03-23 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

I was testing applets in the tutorials, this one doesn't work:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/deployment/applet/param.html (scroll
down for applet)

When launching firefox from console, an error is reported:
java.lang.NumberFormatException: null
at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:443)
at java.lang.Integer.parseInt(Integer.java:514)
at AppletTakesParams.init(AppletTakesParams.java:39)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(AppletPanel.java:436)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:636)

This is caused by the parameter paramInt being unavailable. This parameter is
defined in a jnlp file, reference in the HTML as such:
applet code=AppletTakesParams.class
archive=examples/dist/applet_AppletWithParameters/applet_AppletWithParameters.jar
 height=50 width=800param name=jnlp_href
value=examples/dist/applet_AppletWithParameters/applettakesparams.jnlp/applet

The page works with sun's jre in ubuntu and windows under firefox.

[Bug 502336] [NEW] Text unreadable with blocky dark background on fade in effect at song change

2010-01-02 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: banshee

When changing a song or when mousing over the notification area icon the
text showing the song title is supposed to fade in. Instead it displays
black backgrounds between each letter, about covering their bounding box
until the fade effect ends. At which point the text is rendered
correctly.

I'm running karmic with compiz disabled (free ATI drivers). I'm not sure
what causes this but I've tried it under both the clearlooks and human
themes and changing them does not seem to have any effect.

This is the banshee fade effect. I've attached a screenshot of the fade
in progress (this happens right after mouseover of the icon).

Unfortunately I just noticed this also happens in firefox on twitter
when messages fade in, so it appears it's actually non-banshee specific.
I've no idea where this should be reassigned then though.

[Bug 468153] Re: login screen progress bar screen misaligned on dual-head setups

2009-12-23 Thread wdesmet
Propose to retitle: [...]misaligned on ATI propietary driver dualhead
setups. (can't I do this myself?)

Anyway, the free drivers in karmic have evolved to the point where they
work fine with my graphics card (of course, if I need 3D I'll have to
revisit this). It just took some tweaking and setting the virtual size
manually in my xorg.conf after the automatic tools got it wrong. It
works correctly now with the free drivers (though X still picks the
wrong resolution for my main screen on gdm start-up, as it mirrors
across both).

[Bug 468153] [NEW] login screen progress bar screen misaligned on dual-head setups

2009-11-01 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

When logging in, a progress bar (back and forth type) is displayed with
some text while presumably gnome is started. Unfortunately, on my dual
head setup this is displayed either on the wrong screen or with the
wrong resolution.

My setup is an ATI card and two screens of different resolutions. When I
log in, the progress bar is displayed on my left screen (the secondary
monitor), which is the smaller one of the two (the right screen is the
primary monitor). But it is sized at the size of the right screen, which
is wider and taller, meaning the progress dialog spills over onto the
right screen.

Some ways this could be fixed:
- pick the resolution of the monitor it's displaying on
- display on the primary monitor
- clone on both displays (would really be preferrable)

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

jaunty version. When pressing next in a slideshow or other pdf in
presentation mode everything works fine up to the second to last slide.
then when I press next (spacebar or right arrow) nothing seems to
happen. Pressing next again gives you the 'end of presentation, press
esc to exit'-screen. From this you can go back and then you do end up on
the last slide. It seems evince is somehow advancing the slide but not
rendering it.

[Bug 379023] [NEW] tracker ignores stop words while indexing but not when querying

2009-05-21 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tracker

Versions: Ubuntu 9.04 (jaunty), latest version of all packages, tracker
0.6.93-0ubuntu1

My understanding is that Tracker has a list of stop words that it ignores, so
if you have a file that includes a string like say:
boy sets fire
only boy and fire will show up in the index.

Unfortunately, these words don't get ignored when searching, so when you search
for:
- boy sets fire
you get 0 results (because no results include sets I'm guessing)
- boy
you get the result
- fire
you get the result
- boy fire
you get the result

Tracker should ignore these stop words in queries as well as in the
indexer.

[Bug 357727] [NEW] cd automounting seems to interfere with grip

2009-04-08 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grip

When inserting a cd grip briefly picks it up but then loses sight of it
as the gnome automounting stuff catches sight of the cd.

I could not find any documentation on what exactly happens to the
device. At the very least this is very confusing and makes grip
unusable. Setting the file manager settings to do nothing on inserting
cds doesn't help. Still trying to figure out a work-around.

** Affects: grip (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 280064] [NEW] openjdk6 remains default web start plugin even when sun is default in alternatives

2008-10-08 Thread wdesmet
Public bug reported:

Basically when opening a web start application firefox gives one option
for the jnlp file: Open with OpenJDK6 Web Start (default). The sun-
java6-plugin isn't even displayed and I assume has to be manually
selected.

But when you go to alternatives:
$ ls -l /etc/alternatives/javaws
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 2008-10-06 13:54 /etc/alternatives/javaws -
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws

So something is definitely amiss here. This is probably either firefox's
or one of the plugin packages' fault. This is in Ubuntu 8.04 with all
packages up to date at moment of submission.

[Bug 83290] Re: [gutsy] kernel 2.6.20 and 2.6.22 problem on asus centrino

2007-11-19 Thread wdesmet
Not sure if this is related but I have a similar problem with feisty
(kernel just hangs at setting up standard pci resources). This
happened after upgrading the RAM modules. The kernel is currently using
a modified DSDT, I'll find out how to disable it, try again and post
some updates later. It does seem something is seriously broken on these
laptops that they would just hang on PCI after putting in some sticks of
RAM.

I've tried memcheck et al., everything seems to work fine.

2007-11-19 Thread wdesmet
In follow up of my previous post: the DSDT I had was indeed
malfunctioning. I managed to boot by turning ACPI off, then remove it
from the initrd and reboot. Unfortunately I get a bunch of nasty error
messages on boot and it seems ipw2200 is simply not functional now. The
model is an acer travelmate 4102 WLMi. (latest version)
