[Bug 1877790] [NEW] Better "delete" icon on Evolution toolbar

[Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic
tim-smith: I installed haveged and then install kernel #24 and unlike before now seems to boot and run just fine. Are the developers of the kernel aware of this problem ? Sounds like adding haveged is a patchwork fix at best and that some change to the kernel itself needs to be made - what that might be, I have no idea because me certainly have EXTREMELY little programming experience. How is one supposed to know that they have to do this ? [Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic
I have come to the conclusion that the problem with the #24 Linux Kernel is related to the use of SSD hard drives. I just took my SSD out of my computer and replaced it with an old manual / mechanical hard drive and installed Linux Mint 19 on it including the #24 Kernel and it worked/booted perfectly after the installation of #24, whereas previously when I was using my SSD in the computer the #24 kernel broke the system and would not boot. [Bug 817023] [NEW] wireless vendors not in listing
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu/lucid when trying to setup a Verizon USB wireless air/card connection on one of my older computers under NETWORK MANAGER, there are only about 6 wireless ISP vendors listed in the available vendor listing (Verizon is NOT listed). If I try to setup a Verizon wireless connection under Lucid by MANUALLY typing in the VERIZON vendor name and then adding the connection parameters as provided by Verizon, the network connection will NOT work. Always comes back with "GSM Network Disconnected". On one of my newer computers using Lucid, sometimes the listing will show maybe 15 to 20 ISP vendors and then on other occasions, it will show/display only the first 6 vendors in the listing. On this newer computer, sometimes there is a scroll bar on the right of the listing window that can be used to scroll down to the vendors on the listing after the first 6 or so, but on other occasions, there is NO scroll bar to use to scroll down to the vendors after the first 6. All of this problem is occuring on Lucid. Like I said above on the older computer under Lucid the complete listing of ISP vendors was never displayed. When I took Lucid off of that computer and installed Natty instead from scratch, then the complete listing of wireless ISP vendors is always available. When I tried Nattay on both of my computers, ALL of the 15 to 20 ISP vendors are on the listing including the lower ones on the listing can ALWAYS be accessed by using the available scroll bar to scroll down to the lower ones on the listing. So apparently there is a problem/bug in Lucid as far as the proper displaying of a complete listing of wireless ISP vendors but this appears to have been fixed in Natty. So my question is, if this has been fixed in Natty, why is the fix for this not being seen in the Lucid version. YES, I have backports checked. [Bug 512659] Re: Sound problems in the Lucid Lynx alpha2

I can move the cursor off of and then back onto the MP3 file and it will start playing again but will subsequently at some point in the song just stop playing again. Will never completely play a complete file all the way thru. On the other hand, I have another computer which has almost the same hardware as one of the other 2 computers (except it has a somewhat newer PCI sound card) and it plays all of my MP3 files just fine. [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600
They are NOT checked. That's what I have been trying to say all along. Unchecking those boxes for some reason is NOT being properly written to what ever configuration file that controls the screensaver/going blank function. OR for some reason the changes that are being made to that file are possibly being lost because the altered file is perhaps being replaced by the original version of the file perhaps upon rebooting the system. All someone needs to do is go into the code which serves to write the unchecking of these boxes to the configuration file and figure out for what reason the "uncheck" would not be written & saved to the configuration file and then come up with the proper fix. If I were a Linux program and had access to the code, I believe even little ol' me could do that. [Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work
Since I already have fixed this by running the command XSET S NOBLANK at the terminal what would be accomplished by "reinstalling from synaptic gnome-screensaver", whatever that is ? If I uncheck those 2 boxes at the screensaver screen, this should be sufficient to keep the BLANK screen saver from kicking in. Since unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT accomplished the desired results, that tells me that there is some type of BUG in this section of this O/S which needs to be fixed, so that merely unchecking these 2 boxes would keep the BLANK screen saver from being deployed when there is no activity. I have installed several of the latter version of Ubuntu numerous times and the result is always the same, unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT do what unchecking them is intended to do. I think that when I go way back to Jaunty, this problem does NOT occur. So that tells me that this is a bug that has been written into the later versions of Ubuntu which needs to be fixed. Since I am not a Linux or any other type of programmer, I have ZERO knowledge as to what the problems (or how to fix it) is except to say that a guess would be that it is somehow related to the particular type of hardware that is being used on the installed system since you say that it works fine for you. It's not like I do not know how to uncheck these boxes nor should I really have to do anything but that to get this to work !!! I would be more than happy to provide the exact hardware components that I am using if anyone is interested in trying to duplicate this issue to verify and then come up with a "PROPER" fix for this. Anyone interested in specs or in trying to fix this can contact me at joverstre...@verizon.net. And also, I would not say that because Fabio is not able to duplicate this, necessarily means that this problem is not being experienced by any other users. This type of thing really puts me off to recommending this O/S to other persons. Please don't tell me that it isn't really that important in the grand scheme of things, because if you told someone that you were trying to convince to use Ubuntu that sorry unchecking these buttons will really not work properly, they would promptly tell you to go soak your head and probably rightly so !!! [Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working
Unfortunately, I have to agree with Myroslav's statement. It can take only something as minor in overall importance as this to put off a lot of potential users from considering Linux/Ubuntu. I know that in the grand scheme of things that the playing of this sound is really not all that important BUT Myroslav is exactly correct in saying that a goodly number of potential users are going to wonder if something like this can not be fixed, then what more serious things might be going undone, that they have no knowledge of. Not having these very trivial but very visible things like this go unfixed for an inordinate amount of time, is definitely not good advertising for Ubuntu !!! [Bug 265033] Re: Form contents are invisible when cursor leaves field, but data is still saved in form.
I have come to the conclusion that these bugs/problems related to NOT being able to properly fill-in information on forms on the IRS website is NOT related to bugs/problems in either the Evince, Acroread, or full version of Adobe Acrobat Reader programs but rather a bug/problem in the FIREFOX browser. I say the above because if you save the forms from either the IRS or VDOT website to your hard drive and then close the Firefox browser and then just open these save forms from your hard drive and then try to fill them in, the functioning of filling in the information on the forms, the movement of the cursor from field to field on the forms, then subsequent saving of both the form and the filled in information of the forms work JUST GREAT. Therefore, this sort of indicates to me that the problem in with FIREFOX browser, since at this point it has been taken out of the equation. I don't know if fixing this problem with Firefox is the responsibility of whoever monitors this bug reporting tool but if not it would sure be swell if someone could report this problem to whoever is responsible for the code of the Firefox browser so this problem could finally be fixed. [Bug 324700] Re: gnome-volume-control missing ability to customize session sound effects theme
It is quite embarrassing to recommend Ubuntu to family, friends & neighbors and then have them ask you why they can not assign sounds to various system events like they could in M/S windows and then have to tell them that you are sorry but you can no longer do that in the latest versions of Ubuntu. Yes, you could under the older versions but not under the newer versions. [Bug 329492] Re: Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ?
P. S. - This has problem has developed (it has become broken, since last year (tax season)). Because last year I could fill out the 1040 form on the IRS website just fine. But last year the Evince program would not work properly with the Virginia Department of Taxation website forms, in that, when you attempted to print any of the blank forms from that website, you would wind up getting missing characters over various parts of the forms on the printed results. This happened either if the VDOT form was printed to a physical printer or to a file - this was NOT a driver problem because persons with various printers were all having this same problem. [Bug 329492] Re: Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ?
Yes, this is reproducible. I have had it happen on multiple computers using different versions of Ubuntu. Go to the following IRS website and do a search/find for a IRS form 1040 (or any other IRS form as far as that is concerned) and then tried to fill out the name, address, social security information, etc., etc. and you will see that after you have typed your name in the name field and then when you go to the next field (and you should be able to go to the next field by using the TAB key - but you can't, you have to use the mouse to click on the next field to the filled out, that's problem # 1), the information that you just typed in the name field just disappears, that's problem# 2. And NO, I can not send you an example of this problem because of what I just mentioned above, when you attempt to fill in the fields on the form and go to the next field the the previous field information is lost. I suppose that I could attempt to save a blank IRS 1040 form (with perhaps 1 field filled in, at best), but I really can not see any real benefit in doing that. The best way for you to see what the PROBLEMS with this document viewer (Evince) is to go to the IRS website for yourself and attempt to fill out on of the forms and it will be very obvious to you what the problems are. As a test of how this should work, get on a M/S windows machine that has the Adobe Acrobat reader document viewer program installed on it and then go to the IRS website and attempt to fill out the form 1040 and you will see how it is SUPPOSED to work. http://www.irs.gov/app/picklist/list/formsInstructions.html?value=1040&criteria=formNumber&submitSearch=Find Thanks. -- Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/329492 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Am using Hardy 8.04.2. [Bug 314855] Re: BIOS - 8254 timer bug
an update Further, when I try to install either the desktop version or the ALTERNATE version of Intrepid on this problem IBM model 8303, it will go thru the entire installation process just fine but when I get to the end, I get NO desktop/xserver. I can not even get to a prompt of any type. I have to push and hold the power button to get the machine to shutdown. Sooo, I then figure that perhaps I can try Gutsy again. I then install Gutsy from the ALTERNATE version CD, all goes well. I then do a distribution UPGRADE from Gutsy to Hardy. All goes well. I then do a distribution UPGRADE from Hardy to Intrepid. For the most part all goes well (a few warning messages here and there) but when all is finished on the UPGRADE to Intrepid, I have a desktop/xserver that I can see and as far as I can tell a functioning Intrepid O/S. So my question is, why I could not get this same result by installing Intrepid DIRECTLY from either the Live CD or ALTERNATE cd version of Intrepid ? Yes, both of these CD have had the intregrity check function ran on them multiple times (they passed) and they have been used to install Intrepid to other machines with ZERO problems. [Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject
Sorry, I missed the request for drive brands/types. Both of my drives are CD-RWs - IDE. And both are 52x32x52x. I updated the firmware on both of these drives fairly recently. The one that is problematic as far as ejection with Intrepid is a Sony model CRX230ED. However, if my memory serves me correctly, I believe that this drive was probably actually manufactured by Lite-on. The one that is NOT problematic as far as ejection with Intrepid is a Plextor model PX-W5224TA. I also have a Lite-on CD-RW drive in another older computer, also 52x32x52x and I have noticed that that one also exhibits the CD ejection problems with the Ubuntu O/Ss. I think I may be seeing a pattern here. And this really does not surprise me, because it seems that most every time that I have some problem related to a CD drive that it is a model that has been manufactured by Lite-on !!! -- CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/283316 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 314855] [NEW] BIOS - 8254 timer bug
Public bug reported: Since I did not get any response to this on my thread on the Ubuntu forum, I thought I would see if this might be a bug in the installation for the Intrepid final release version of Ubuntu. Below is a copy of my post on the forum. I am getting the following error message during 1) the Ubuntu CD integrity check function 2) during the installation of the Ubuntu O/S to the hard drive 3) during the boot phase of Ubuntu after the O/S has been installed to the hard drive. Error message is: .. MP-BIOS BUG: 8254 Timer Not connected to IO-APIC. And yes I have tried the NOAPIC parameter and that makes NO difference. I have also tried turning off Power Management in BIOS and that makes NO difference. BUT, here is the part that I really don't understand. The computer that I am getting this message on is an oldish IBM NetVista model 8303. But last week, I installed Intrepid on an IBM NetVista model 6790 for my brother's family to use on their new DSL internet connection and I got no such message regarding the 8254 Timer when doing any of the 3 above operations on that IBM machine. And correct me if I am wrong, but I was under that impression that the Model 6790 machine is a somewhat older version of the NetVista than the Model 8303. Why would I get this error message on the newer machine and NOT on the older one ??? And let me mention that the BIOS on both machines are on the latest version that is (and since these are older machines every will be) available. Thanks. P.S. - I just took my Gutsy Alternate CD and ran the CD integrity test on that same machine that I am seeing the 8254 timer message on when using the Intrepid version of Ubuntu and I am NOT seeing that error message when using Gutsy. Is this a problem with my computer or a bug in the Intrepid version of Ubuntu ? [Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject
Dear jt: Here is the result of running that command in terminal: udev: Installed: 124-9 Candidate: 124-9 Version table: *** 124-9 0 500 http://archive.linux.duke.edu intrepid-updates/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 124-8 0 500 http://archive.linux.duke.edu intrepid/main Packages However, I don't exactly understand that second part of your request. Are you saying that the contents of the storage-rules file as it stands right now will give you a trail of ALL of the events that you want to see or are you wanting me to capture the contents of that file after each of the 3 stages that you list, which if I am understanding this correct would require me to do a complete reinstallation of Intrepid from scratch. If that is the case, then I might be willing to take my CD drive out of the machine that I have the installation on now and move it to another very similar machine that I have yet to get installed and try it on that one. I don't want to risk messing up the configuration I have on this machine (I have worked too long to get it working just like I want it). Let me go on to say that I think this problem with the CD ejection not working correctly is dependent on the brand/type of drive that is being used in the machine. I say that because when I first did the installation on the machine that I am typing this on now (my main machine) that I had another brand of CD-RW drive in the machine and when I did the Ubuntu install with that brand drive in the machine I did not have the problem once I had applied all of the Ubuntu updates. But then after doing that installation, I decided to change some of the hardware in this machine and one of those was to take that brand CD-RW out of the machine and replace it with another which I consider to be a more desirable drive. And when I did that, when I reinstalled the O/S with this other brand of CD-RW in the machine that I had the problem that was not resolve by just installing all of the updates but I had to indeed run the 2 commands that I found in a post on the Ubuntu forums. Let me know if you want me to reconfigure the other machine and I will give it a try when I get a chance but IT MAY BE A WHILE. [Bug 236263] Re: Why NO function on OK button
Jimmy: What I did was to go into software sources and I checked the box under the updates tab labeled as "unsupported updates - Gutsy- backports". I then went back to update manager where it prompted me to do a partial upgrade. And one of the 4 updates that was listed was a newer version of SUM. I then did the partial upgrade and after doing so, this fixed the problem with SUM not exiting correctly. My question to you is, if this new version of SUM that I installed by this process was necessary to fix this problem then WHY is the check box on the update tab in software sources labeled as "UNSUPPORTED UPDATES". That really makes no sense to me. To me UNSUPPORTED UPDATES would imply that these updates are NOT an official part of Ubuntu and possibly should not be download and installed because they could possibly not only not fix your problems but create some new ones. Is there a possibility that this check box needs to be re-labeled ? Should this check box labeled "unsupported updates" in software sources always remained checked in order that fixes will be applied to the O/S to fix flaws ? [Bug 236263] Re: Why NO function on OK button
Jimmy: Yes, it displays "Original settings restored. Shutting down". Apparently, this means that the original SUM settings have been restored (which they indeed appear to have been by either going back in and looking at the settings or by the behavior of the machine at restart). The shutting down appears to be referring to the fact that the process SUM process is "SUPPOSED" to be shutting down (not that the machine is supposed to be doing any shutdown process). And yes, I just test this on another machine that I just installed Intrepid on recently and this problem does NOT occur. I get the same message "original settings restored. Shutting down" at the warning diagonal with the OK button. But on the Intrepid machine when I hit OK button, the SUM exits as it should. And yes, the versions of SUM on the Gutsy machine and the Intrepid machine do NOT appear to be the same. The version number on the Gutsy machine is 1.0.9-0ubuntu1 but the version on the Intrepid machine is 1.9.11-1. Both the Gutsy machine and the Intrepid have had ALL of the updates that come up under the Update Manager program/process applied to them. If the SUM program on the Gutsy machine is supposed to be the same version as the one being used on the Intrepid machine what is it that I am supposed to do to get it to that version ? Is there some other button/check box in software sources that I am supposed to have checked that I do not ? The only differences that I can see is that on the Gutsy machine there is a minus sign in the source code check box where as the Intrepid check box is blank and on the updates tab the pre- released check box is marked on the Intrepid machine and not marked on the Gutsy machine. Does any of this need to be changed in order to get the correct version of SUM onto the Gutsy machine or is this problem completely unrelated to the settings in software sources ?
