[Bug 1877790] [NEW] Better "delete" icon on Evolution toolbar

2020-05-09 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

It would be nice if the "delete" email function on the Evolution toolbar
was a bit more defined so that a new user could readily discern that it
is a TRASH CAN symbol, so that they would instantly know to hit it to
delete no longer needed emails. Thanks a bunch.

[Bug 1876286] Re: Evolution reports "Error performing TLS handshake: Internal error in memory allocation."

2020-05-01 Thread wpshooter
Am having this problem with my Verizon email account which was migrated to AOL
several years back.
Am using Evolution version 3.28.5-0ubuntu0.18.04.2 which is the default version
as presently updated for Linux Mint 19.3 mate 64 bit. AOL has been zero help

Send email functions just fine.
Receiving email will not function. Gives error:

Have send function setup as: smtp.verizon.net on port 465 which has worked
until just 2 days ago.
Have receive function setup as: pop.verizon.net on port 995 which has worked
until just 2 days ago.
Encryption method on receive function encrytion method setup as: TLS on a
dedicated port

Get this error when poll for supported types: Failed to query server
for a list of supported authentication mechanisms. Error performing TLS
handshake: Internal error in memory allocation.

Let me know if you need more info. joverstre...@verizon.net or

[Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-12 Thread wpshooter
tim-smith:

I installed haveged and then install kernel #24 and unlike before
now seems to boot and run just fine.

Are the developers of the kernel aware of this problem ?

Sounds like adding haveged is a patchwork fix at best and that some
change to the kernel itself needs to be made - what that might
be, I have no idea because me certainly have EXTREMELY little
programming experience. Sort of thinking about going back to
Mint 18.3 for now.

Thanks.

[Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-12 Thread wpshooter
Did you install haveged "BEFORE" you attempted update to kernel #24 ?

Is you SSD a Western Digital, may I ask ?

Perhaps haveged is a solution but does not sound like a particularly
good one. How is one supposed to know that they have to do this ?

Sounds like to me that there is something in kernel #24 that needs to
be fixed so that will will work properly with SSD without having to
add this that and the other to get it to work.

Thanks for the info.

[Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-12 Thread wpshooter
I have come to the conclusion that the problem with the #24 Linux Kernel is
related
to the use of SSD hard drives.

I just took my SSD out of my computer and replaced it with an old manual /
mechanical
hard drive and installed Linux Mint 19 on it including the #24 Kernel and it
worked/booted
perfectly after the installation of #24, whereas previously when I was using my
SSD in
the computer the #24 kernel broke the system and would not boot.

Hope someone addresses this issue fairly quickly because me thinks there are a
lot
of people like me who have switched to SSD.

Thanks.

Michael:

To the best of my knowledge I am no longer having this problem.

However, that may be due to the fact that I no longer use Ubuntu

I no longer have this problem.

Now, when I type the info in the form I CAN see it and when I advance to
the next field on the form the info in the previously completed field is
still visible and can be save and/or printed as a completed form.

Thanks.

Re: [Bug 817023] Re: wireless vendors not in listing

2011-09-22 Thread wpshooter
Mathieu:

It has been quite a while since I dealt with this problem that I was
having getting a friend's computer configured to work with his wireless
Verizon account, so I have don't any longer have any of the detailed
user info and Verizon account information.

I can tell you the way that I resolved it was by moving his computer
from a Lucid installation to a 11-04 install (whatever the code name for
that one is). Seems 11-04 has/shows listing of correct configuration
for Verizon wireless account whereas Lucid does NOT.

Problem for this seems to be in Lucid but NOT in 11-04.

I would be glad to relate details of problem the best of my recall if
you need.

Thanks.

[Bug 817023] [NEW] wireless vendors not in listing

2011-07-27 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu/lucid when trying to setup a Verizon USB wireless air/card
connection on one of my older computers under NETWORK MANAGER, there are
only about 6 wireless ISP vendors listed in the available vendor listing
(Verizon is NOT listed).

If I try to setup a Verizon wireless connection under Lucid by MANUALLY
typing in the VERIZON vendor name and then adding the connection
parameters as provided by Verizon, the network connection will NOT work.
Always comes back with "GSM Network Disconnected".

On one of my newer computers using Lucid, sometimes the listing will
show maybe 15 to 20 ISP vendors and then on other occasions, it will
show/display only the first 6 vendors in the listing. On this newer
computer, sometimes there is a scroll bar on the right of the listing
window that can be used to scroll down to the vendors on the listing
after the first 6 or so, but on other occasions, there is NO scroll bar
to use to scroll down to the vendors after the first 6. All of this
problem is occuring on Lucid.

Like I said above on the older computer under Lucid the complete listing
of ISP vendors was never displayed. When I took Lucid off of that
computer and installed Natty instead from scratch, then the complete
listing of wireless ISP vendors is always available.

When I tried Nattay on both of my computers, ALL of the 15 to 20 ISP
vendors are on the listing including the lower ones on the listing can
ALWAYS be accessed by using the available scroll bar to scroll down to
the lower ones on the listing.

So apparently there is a problem/bug in Lucid as far as the proper
displaying of a complete listing of wireless ISP vendors but this
appears to have been fixed in Natty.

So my question is, if this has been fixed in Natty, why is the fix for
this not being seen in the Lucid version. YES, I have backports
checked.

Thanks.

[Bug 512659] Re: Sound problems in the Lucid Lynx alpha2

2011-05-19 Thread wpshooter
Using Lucid final release version (not Alpha version) and I have 2
desktop computers on which if I attempt to play an MP3 file, the sound
will play part the way thru the song and then just cut off, i.e. stop
playing song, no sound. I can move the cursor off of and then back onto
the MP3 file and it will start playing again but will subsequently at
some point in the song just stop playing again. Will never completely
play a complete file all the way thru.

On the other hand, I have another computer which has almost the same
hardware as one of the other 2 computers (except it has a somewhat newer
PCI sound card) and it plays all of my MP3 files just fine.

Does anyone know when this problem might be fixed ?

To me this is a MAJOR / BIG TIME bug in this operating system and IMO an
operating system should NOT be released for use with a bug of this type
existing in it !!!

Let me know if you may need some type of info or data to assist in
fixing the problem.

Thanks.

[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600

2011-02-21 Thread wpshooter
IF I am looking at the correct gconf.xml file, then it says that the
owner is ROOT and that I do NOT have rights to change permissions. I
assure you that I have not changed any rights/permissions to that or any
other files that were installed by this Ubuntu O/S.

Please don't tell me that the action of unchecking those boxes in the
screensaver section of the program REQUIRES administrative rights to
change those settings BUT yet it gives ZERO user prompt telling that you
can not change/uncheck those boxes without having administrative/SUDO
rights ?

[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600

2011-02-20 Thread wpshooter
They are NOT checked.

That's what I have been trying to say all along.

Unchecking those boxes for some reason is NOT being properly written to
what ever configuration file that controls the screensaver/going blank
function. OR for some reason the changes that are being made to that
file are possibly being lost because the altered file is perhaps being
replaced by the original version of the file perhaps upon rebooting the
system.

All someone needs to do is go into the code which serves to write the
unchecking of these boxes to the configuration file and figure out for
what reason the "uncheck" would not be written & saved to the
configuration file and then come up with the proper fix.

If I were a Linux program and had access to the code, I believe even
little ol' me could do that.

Thanks.

Since unchecking the check boxes in the screen saver section of most of

[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work in ati 9600

2011-02-11 Thread wpshooter
# What desktop environment does this problem occur in? (GNOME, XFCE,
KDE, etc.)

GNOME.

# Do you use visual effects? (System/Preferences/Appearance/Visual Effects)

Visual effects is set on NONE.

# Does the problem still occur if you disable visual effects?

YES.

# Does the problem still occur if you use the "blank screen" screensaver?

I am not using any screensaver. Screensaver button is unchecked. There
in lays the problem, unchecking the box does NOT keep the screensaver
from becoming active after a period of inactivity.

# Is the "Lock screen when screensaver is active" setting checked in
System/Preferences/Screensaver?

NO.

# Is this a laptop or a desktop machine?

Desktop.

# How many monitors do you use?

One, LCD 19inch Samsung.

# If it is a laptop, do you use an external screen?

Not laptop.

# Do you have the hamster-applet application installed? This applications has
been known to cause screen locking issues.

No, not unless it was installed during Ubuntu O/S installation.

When I attempt to run the command that was referred to about gathering
some type of info, the answer that I get is COMMAND NOT FOUND.

Thanks.

[Bug 714015] Re: blank screen saver buttons do NOT work

2011-02-08 Thread wpshooter
Since I already have fixed this by running the command XSET S NOBLANK at
the terminal what would be accomplished by "reinstalling from synaptic
gnome-screensaver", whatever that is ?

If I uncheck those 2 boxes at the screensaver screen, this should be
sufficient to keep the BLANK screen saver from kicking in.

Since unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT accomplished the desired
results, that tells me that there is some type of BUG in this section of
this O/S which needs to be fixed, so that merely unchecking these 2
boxes would keep the BLANK screen saver from being deployed when there
is no activity.

I have installed several of the latter version of Ubuntu numerous times
and the result is always the same, unchecking these 2 boxes does NOT do
what unchecking them is intended to do. I think that when I go way back
to Jaunty, this problem does NOT occur. So that tells me that this is a
bug that has been written into the later versions of Ubuntu which needs
to be fixed. Since I am not a Linux or any other type of programmer, I
have ZERO knowledge as to what the problems (or how to fix it) is except
to say that a guess would be that it is somehow related to the
particular type of hardware that is being used on the installed system
since you say that it works fine for you. It's not like I do not know
how to uncheck these boxes nor should I really have to do anything but
that to get this to work !!!

I would be more than happy to provide the exact hardware components that
I am using if anyone is interested in trying to duplicate this issue to
verify and then come up with a "PROPER" fix for this. Anyone interested
in specs or in trying to fix this can contact me at
joverstre...@verizon.net.

And also, I would not say that because Fabio is not able to duplicate
this, necessarily means that this problem is not being experienced by
any other users.

This type of thing really puts me off to recommending this O/S to other
persons. Please don't tell me that it isn't really that important in
the grand scheme of things, because if you told someone that you were
trying to convince to use Ubuntu that sorry unchecking these buttons
will really not work properly, they would promptly tell you to go soak
your head and probably rightly so !!!

Thanks.

[Bug 714015] [NEW] blank screen saver buttons do NOT work

2011-02-06 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

Since unchecking the check boxes in the screen saver section of most of
the later versions of Ubuntu that are "supposed" to turn off the
functioning of screen savers or blanking screen after a certain period
of inactivity do NOT seem to work, then it would be nice if someone
would consider putting a text message on that screen that basically says
that if you really don't want the screen to go blank after a certain
period of inactivity what you need to do is to run this SUDO command at
the terminal: XSET S NOBLANK.

Thanks.

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2011-01-19 Thread wpshooter
Unfortunately, I have to agree with Myroslav's statement.

It can take only something as minor in overall importance as this to put
off a lot of potential users from considering Linux/Ubuntu. I know that
in the grand scheme of things that the playing of this sound is really
not all that important BUT Myroslav is exactly correct in saying that a
goodly number of potential users are going to wonder if something like
this can not be fixed, then what more serious things might be going
undone, that they have no knowledge of.

Not having these very trivial but very visible things like this go
unfixed for an inordinate amount of time, is definitely not good
advertising for Ubuntu !!!

[Bug 265033] Re: Form contents are invisible when cursor leaves field, but data is still saved in form.

2010-02-27 Thread wpshooter
I have come to the conclusion that these bugs/problems related to NOT
being able to properly fill-in information on forms on the IRS website
is NOT related to bugs/problems in either the Evince, Acroread, or full
version of Adobe Acrobat Reader programs but rather a bug/problem in the
FIREFOX browser.

I say the above because if you save the forms from either the IRS or
VDOT website to your hard drive and then close the Firefox browser and
then just open these save forms from your hard drive and then try to
fill them in, the functioning of filling in the information on the
forms, the movement of the cursor from field to field on the forms, then
subsequent saving of both the form and the filled in information of the
forms work JUST GREAT. Therefore, this sort of indicates to me that the
problem in with FIREFOX browser, since at this point it has been taken
out of the equation.

I don't know if fixing this problem with Firefox is the responsibility
of whoever monitors this bug reporting tool but if not it would sure be
swell if someone could report this problem to whoever is responsible for
the code of the Firefox browser so this problem could finally be fixed.

Thanks.

[Bug 324700] Re: gnome-volume-control missing ability to customize session sound effects theme

2010-01-31 Thread wpshooter
It is quite embarrassing to recommend Ubuntu to family, friends &
neighbors and then have them ask you why they can not assign sounds to
various system events like they could in M/S windows and then have to
tell them that you are sorry but you can no longer do that in the latest
versions of Ubuntu.

Yes, you could under the older versions but not under the newer
versions.

And then you have to watch them figuratively scratch their heads and say
well that really does not make any sense, why would it work under older
versions and not under the newer versions and then you have to agree
with them and wonder along with them if perhaps whoever is maintaining
this software may not know what they are doing !!! And if something as
basic as this does not function, then what'all else is there that may
not work like it is supposed to !!!

[Bug 468531] [NEW] Synaptic program was not able to find any program when initially opened in Karmic final release version

2009-11-01 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

When I installed Karmic final release version from desktop/live CD 32
bit version when I initially went into the Synaptic program to attempt
to install a couple of programs (those being glipper and xsensors) it
was as if the Synaptic program could not find any programs to install
because when I did a search for both glipper and xsensors it could not
find them (also could not find any other programs).

Subsequently, when I went into the MENU listing for adding software
programs, I found xsensors listed there but when I tried to install it,
it can back with some type of error saying that it could not complete
the installation.

Then after this and after I had rebooted the computer and went back into
Synaptic all of a sudden when searching for the glipper and xsensors
programs, it found them and I then installed them perfectly fine.

Why did Synaptic fail to find these programs when I first went into it
to try to find and install these program ?

I believe that these problems involving CD drive ejection are drive
brand specific. Is the FIRMWARE (not to be confused with driver) on

[Bug 206280] Re: [hardy] Error opening config file: /etc/sensors.conf

Sorry, I missed that.

Then you are correct. Does not as of yet work on Hardy.

I don't think it would work on the previous version (Gutsy) either. But
I believe that it did work on the version that came before Gutsy.

This is one reason why I switched to Jaunty.

I think the efforts to get it to a point so that it will work under
Hardy and Gutsy and still on-going.

Why don't you consider changing to Jaunty. But I think that in order
for it to work under Jaunty, you have to actually do an installation of
Jaunty from scratch NOT by upgrading from Hardy.

Good luck.

I don't know what all that stuff you were referring to above regarding
adding packages, etc. has to do with getting Xsensors to work but all
things being equal, if you have a stock installation of Jaunty and you
install Xsensors from Synaptic and then afterwards go to the terminal
and run the following command, sudo sensors-detect and then answer all
of the questions either YES or hit the ENTER key when prompted and then
after the last question is answered do a restart of your computer then
Xsensors SHOULD work from the applications/system tools menu.

Good luck.

[Bug 73405] Re: xsensors displays nothing and then crashes when closed.

2009-08-30 Thread wpshooter
I can not speak for any of the previous releases but for me the Xsensor
program has finally been fixed so that it works perfectly under Jaunty.

However, let me say that if you got to Jaunty via an upgrade from a
previous version of Ubuntu (as opposed to installing Jaunty from
scratch), then it is probably NOT going to work correctly.

Thanks.

[Bug 229237] Re: Ubuntu does not work correctly on ASUS motherboards with ECC memory function enabled in BIOS

I have come to the conclusion that this problem is just a flaw in the

Ubuntu O/S.

Please close this bug.

[Bug 229237] Re: Ubuntu does not work correctly on ASUS motherboards with ECC memory function enabled in BIOS

2009-08-06 Thread wpshooter
When you say confirm issue exists with latest development release of
Ubuntu, are you referring to Jaunty or Karmic ?

Since Jaunty is the latest RELEASED version of Ubuntu, I am going to
install and test with that. If you would rather have the test with
Karmic, please let me know.

Also, on the "apport-collect -p linux 229237 command, where will the
collected information be stored and how do I get it to attach updated
debug information to this report ? Will a file be created that I need
to attach to launchpad posting and if so, what will be the location and
name of file ?

As far as your request that I test against latest upstream kernel, I am
not sure that I know how to go about this !!! Would this be just a
matter of installing either Jaunty or Karmic and then somehow
downloading and installing the latest kernel from the site that you give
? Would this be done thru Synaptic or by some other means ?

Thanks.

Just put the screensaver consider idle setting at 1 minute, so then you
can put the display sleep time to as low as 2 minutes.

[Bug 365890] Re: error message when glipper is launching

2009-05-09 Thread wpshooter
If simply adding these 2 lines to the glipper program will solve this
issue (as someone has suggested on the Ubuntu user forums), then why
doesn't someone permanently incorporate these 2 lines or something
similar into the glipper program, so everyone that has this problem is
not having to hunt for this solution and find it JUST BY CHANCE ?

import time # <-- This line is new
time.sleep(8) # <-- This line is new. Increase to 20 or 30 if 8 doesn't help

[Bug 329492] Re: Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ?

2009-02-17 Thread wpshooter
P. S. - This has problem has developed (it has become broken, since last
year (tax season)). Because last year I could fill out the 1040 form on
the IRS website just fine. But last year the Evince program would not
work properly with the Virginia Department of Taxation website forms, in
that, when you attempted to print any of the blank forms from that
website, you would wind up getting missing characters over various parts
of the forms on the printed results. This happened either if the VDOT
form was printed to a physical printer or to a file - this was NOT a
driver problem because persons with various printers were all having
this same problem.

Thanks.

[Bug 329492] Re: Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ?

2009-02-17 Thread wpshooter
Yes, this is reproducible. I have had it happen on multiple computers
using different versions of Ubuntu.

Go to the following IRS website and do a search/find for a IRS form 1040
(or any other IRS form as far as that is concerned) and then tried to
fill out the name, address, social security information, etc., etc. and
you will see that after you have typed your name in the name field and
then when you go to the next field (and you should be able to go to the
next field by using the TAB key - but you can't, you have to use the
mouse to click on the next field to the filled out, that's problem # 1),
the information that you just typed in the name field just disappears,
that's problem# 2.

And NO, I can not send you an example of this problem because of what I
just mentioned above, when you attempt to fill in the fields on the form
and go to the next field the the previous field information is lost. I
suppose that I could attempt to save a blank IRS 1040 form (with perhaps
1 field filled in, at best), but I really can not see any real benefit
in doing that. The best way for you to see what the PROBLEMS with this
document viewer (Evince) is to go to the IRS website for yourself and
attempt to fill out on of the forms and it will be very obvious to you
what the problems are. As a test of how this should work, get on a M/S
windows machine that has the Adobe Acrobat reader document viewer
program installed on it and then go to the IRS website and attempt to
fill out the form 1040 and you will see how it is SUPPOSED to work.

[Bug 329492] [NEW] Why is document viewer not capable of filling out and printing IRS website forms such as 1040 ?

2009-02-14 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

Am using Hardy 8.04.2.

Why is it that if I go to the IRS website and pull up a form 1040, that
I can not properly fill out that form and print it with the document
viewer that is built into Hardy ?

I know that Adobe Acrobat reader has this capability on a M/S windows
machine. Does the document viewer that is being used by Ubuntu NOT
sufficient in capability to satisfy the requirements of the IRS website
forms, i.e. is Adobe Acrobat a MUST for this job ? If Ubuntu document
viewer is not capable of performing these functions, then this really
needs to be addressed.

[Bug 314855] Re: BIOS - 8254 timer bug

2009-01-09 Thread wpshooter
an update

Further, when I try to install either the desktop version or the
ALTERNATE version of Intrepid on this problem IBM model 8303, it will go
thru the entire installation process just fine but when I get to the
end, I get NO desktop/xserver. I can not even get to a prompt of any
type. I have to push and hold the power button to get the machine to
shutdown.

Sooo, I then figure that perhaps I can try Gutsy again. I then
install Gutsy from the ALTERNATE version CD, all goes well. I then do a
distribution UPGRADE from Gutsy to Hardy. All goes well. I then do a
distribution UPGRADE from Hardy to Intrepid. For the most part all goes
well (a few warning messages here and there) but when all is finished on
the UPGRADE to Intrepid, I have a desktop/xserver that I can see and as
far as I can tell a functioning Intrepid O/S.

So my question is, why I could not get this same result by installing
Intrepid DIRECTLY from either the Live CD or ALTERNATE cd version of
Intrepid ? Yes, both of these CD have had the intregrity check function
ran on them multiple times (they passed) and they have been used to
install Intrepid to other machines with ZERO problems.

Thanks.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-07 Thread wpshooter
Sorry, I missed the request for drive brands/types.

Both of my drives are CD-RWs - IDE. And both are 52x32x52x. I updated
the firmware on both of these drives fairly recently.

The one that is problematic as far as ejection with Intrepid is a Sony
model CRX230ED. However, if my memory serves me correctly, I believe
that this drive was probably actually manufactured by Lite-on.

The one that is NOT problematic as far as ejection with Intrepid is a
Plextor model PX-W5224TA.

I also have a Lite-on CD-RW drive in another older computer, also
52x32x52x and I have noticed that that one also exhibits the CD ejection
problems with the Ubuntu O/Ss.

I think I may be seeing a pattern here. And this really does not
surprise me, because it seems that most every time that I have some
problem related to a CD drive that it is a model that has been
manufactured by Lite-on !!!

[Bug 314855] [NEW] BIOS - 8254 timer bug

2009-01-07 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

Since I did not get any response to this on my thread on the Ubuntu
forum, I thought I would see if this might be a bug in the installation
for the Intrepid final release version of Ubuntu. Below is a copy of my
post on the forum.

I am getting the following error message during

1) the Ubuntu CD integrity check function

2) during the installation of the Ubuntu O/S to the hard drive

3) during the boot phase of Ubuntu after the O/S has been installed to
the hard drive.

Error message is: .. MP-BIOS BUG: 8254 Timer Not connected to IO-APIC.

And yes I have tried the NOAPIC parameter and that makes NO difference.
I have also tried turning off Power Management in BIOS and that makes NO
difference.

BUT, here is the part that I really don't understand.

The computer that I am getting this message on is an oldish IBM NetVista
model 8303. But last week, I installed Intrepid on an IBM NetVista model
6790 for my brother's family to use on their new DSL internet connection
and I got no such message regarding the 8254 Timer when doing any of the
3 above operations on that IBM machine.

And correct me if I am wrong, but I was under that impression that the
Model 6790 machine is a somewhat older version of the NetVista than the
Model 8303.

Why would I get this error message on the newer machine and NOT on the
older one ???

And let me mention that the BIOS on both machines are on the latest
version that is (and since these are older machines every will be)
available.

Thanks.

P.S. - I just took my Gutsy Alternate CD and ran the CD integrity test
on that same machine that I am seeing the 8254 timer message on when
using the Intrepid version of Ubuntu and I am NOT seeing that error
message when using Gutsy.

Is this a problem with my computer or a bug in the Intrepid version of
Ubuntu ?

Thanks again.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-05 Thread wpshooter
Dear jt:

Here is the result of running that command in terminal:

udev:
  Installed: 124-9
  Candidate: 124-9
  Version table:
 *** 124-9 0
500 http://archive.linux.duke.edu intrepid-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 124-8 0
500 http://archive.linux.duke.edu intrepid/main Packages

However, I don't exactly understand that second part of your request.
Are you saying that the contents of the storage-rules file as it stands
right now will give you a trail of ALL of the events that you want to
see or are you wanting me to capture the contents of that file after
each of the 3 stages that you list, which if I am understanding this
correct would require me to do a complete reinstallation of Intrepid
from scratch. If that is the case, then I might be willing to take my
CD drive out of the machine that I have the installation on now and move
it to another very similar machine that I have yet to get installed and
try it on that one. I don't want to risk messing up the configuration I
have on this machine (I have worked too long to get it working just like
I want it). Let me go on to say that I think this problem with the CD
ejection not working correctly is dependent on the brand/type of drive
that is being used in the machine. I say that because when I first did
the installation on the machine that I am typing this on now (my main
machine) that I had another brand of CD-RW drive in the machine and when
I did the Ubuntu install with that brand drive in the machine I did not
have the problem once I had applied all of the Ubuntu updates. But then
after doing that installation, I decided to change some of the hardware
in this machine and one of those was to take that brand CD-RW out of the
machine and replace it with another which I consider to be a more
desirable drive. And when I did that, when I reinstalled the O/S with
this other brand of CD-RW in the machine that I had the problem that was
not resolve by just installing all of the updates but I had to indeed
run the 2 commands that I found in a post on the Ubuntu forums.

Let me know if you want me to reconfigure the other machine and I will
give it a try when I get a chance but IT MAY BE A WHILE.

Thanks.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2009-01-01 Thread wpshooter
Dear Savvas:

I solved my problem by issuing 2 commands at the terminal which I found
on a thread on the Ubuntu forums.

The problem as described in a blog on the web, says that this is being
caused by a "coding error" in some of the Ubuntu programming.

I also posted that fact and I think the link to that thread on another
report of this bug on another bug report about this same problem.

Thanks.

[Bug 311906] [NEW] xsensors does not work under Ubuntu versions above Gutsy

2008-12-28 Thread wpshooter
Public bug reported:

Xsensors program will not work properly under any Ubuntu version above
Gutsy (even after having ran sensors-detect at the terminal and then
doing a system restart).

If this program is not going to be made so that it can work under Hardy
& Intrepid, shouldn't the package be removed from Synaptic OR if there
is a newer version that WILL work, have the newer version made available
in Synaptic package manager.

If you need any more details, please let me know or as an alternative
just try to install it and get it to run under Hardy.

Thanks.

[Bug 283316] Re: CD-ROM tray closes automatically after eject

2008-12-27 Thread wpshooter
Sawas:

Thanks for your reply.

BUT, I still had the problem AFTER applying EVERY update that was
available from the Intrepid-updates that are found under software
sources.

When I applied the 2 lines shown in the post above the problem was fixed
immediately.

Let me also say that I did not have to apply those 2 lines under my old
setup when I had a Plextor CD-RW drive in my machine. BUT when I
changed the CD-RW drive to a Sony Drive, and after doing a fresh install
of Intrepid, I had this problem EVEN AFTER applying all of the updates.
I did NOT have this problem when I applied ALL of the updates when I was
using the Plextor drive. There appears to me, to still be some little
quirky thing here that someone has missed.

Thanks.

[Bug 236263] Re: Why NO function on OK button

2008-12-24 Thread wpshooter
Jimmy:

What I did was to go into software sources and I checked the box under
the updates tab labeled as "unsupported updates - Gutsy- backports".

I then went back to update manager where it prompted me to do a partial
upgrade. And one of the 4 updates that was listed was a newer version
of SUM.

I then did the partial upgrade and after doing so, this fixed the
problem with SUM not exiting correctly.

My question to you is, if this new version of SUM that I installed by
this process was necessary to fix this problem then WHY is the check box
on the update tab in software sources labeled as "UNSUPPORTED UPDATES".
That really makes no sense to me. To me UNSUPPORTED UPDATES would imply
that these updates are NOT an official part of Ubuntu and possibly
should not be download and installed because they could possibly not
only not fix your problems but create some new ones. Is there a
possibility that this check box needs to be re-labeled ?

Should this check box labeled "unsupported updates" in software sources
always remained checked in order that fixes will be applied to the O/S
to fix flaws ?

Thanks.

This link seems to lead to what appears to be a Windows based

Are you sure this is the correct program? If so, how is this to be
applied to a Ubuntu/Linux based O/S ?

[Bug 236263] Re: Why NO function on OK button

2008-12-23 Thread wpshooter
Jimmy:

Yes, it displays "Original settings restored. Shutting down".

Apparently, this means that the original SUM settings have been restored
(which they indeed appear to have been by either going back in and
looking at the settings or by the behavior of the machine at restart).
The shutting down appears to be referring to the fact that the process
SUM process is "SUPPOSED" to be shutting down (not that the machine is
supposed to be doing any shutdown process).

And yes, I just test this on another machine that I just installed
Intrepid on recently and this problem does NOT occur. I get the same
message "original settings restored. Shutting down" at the warning
diagonal with the OK button. But on the Intrepid machine when I hit OK
button, the SUM exits as it should.

And yes, the versions of SUM on the Gutsy machine and the Intrepid
machine do NOT appear to be the same. The version number on the Gutsy
machine is 1.0.9-0ubuntu1 but the version on the Intrepid machine is
1.9.11-1.

Both the Gutsy machine and the Intrepid have had ALL of the updates that
come up under the Update Manager program/process applied to them.

If the SUM program on the Gutsy machine is supposed to be the same
version as the one being used on the Intrepid machine what is it that I
am supposed to do to get it to that version ? Is there some other
button/check box in software sources that I am supposed to have checked
that I do not ? The only differences that I can see is that on the
Gutsy machine there is a minus sign in the source code check box where
as the Intrepid check box is blank and on the updates tab the pre-
released check box is marked on the Intrepid machine and not marked on
the Gutsy machine. Does any of this need to be changed in order to get
the correct version of SUM onto the Gutsy machine or is this problem
completely unrelated to the settings in software sources ?

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks.

[Bug 197267] Re: getting "ACPI Invalid PBLK Length 5" - message on Hardy Alpha 5

2008-12-21 Thread wpshooter
I recently installed the release version of Intrepid on the P4G8X ASUS
motherboard computer and I still get the same error message.

If I can run Gutsy on this motherboard without getting this message,
then the integrity of Hardy and Intrepid is very doubtful in my mind.
This leads me to think that someone is changing things in this O/S
without taking into account ALL of the consequences.

Thanks.

[Bug 300833] Re: why can recent updates related to HP linux printing system be downloaded and installed from the UPDATE MANAGER section of Ubuntu ?

2008-11-25 Thread wpshooter
Somehow, not exactly sure how, I got this solved.

After trying to get them to install several times, I finally got some
prompt regarding doing a partial upgrade. I chose to do that when the
prompt came up but during the process I was afraid that it was going to
upgrade me from Gutsy to Hardy (which I did not want to do), so I
canceled the upgrade process and then after that I think I rebooted and
tried the download and install of the 3 HP printing updates thru Update
Manager once again and that time they SEEMED to install just fine. In
any case, they have not appeared as available updates in Update Manager
since then.

Thanks.

Unsubscribing ubuntu-main-sponsors as there is currently nothing to

What does that mean ? It would be nice to give a PLAIN/COMMON
