[Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
** Description changed: The symptoms are: -sleep : shows some messages in console mode about going to sleep, then the display shows all sorts of colors and lines, and after a second or two it enters the sleep state. When pressing any key, i again get some sleep messages in console mode (no errors though), and then the screen blanks with the backlight still on, and the hard drive led blinking from time to time. In this state nothing short of a hard shutdown seems to work: mouse, keyboard, closing the lid does nothing. It just sits with the black screen, eating up CPU cycles ( i know this by the sound of my noisy CPU cooler) with hard drive led blinking from time to time. One thing is strange though: if I am to play some media file while putting it to sleep, like an mp3 or something, on waking up, while on that blank screen, the media seems to continue playing, although with pauses, like 4-5 seconds playing, 2-3 seconds pause, and so on. -hibernate : it seems to shutdown and save the data correctly (i can't tell because i don't know where to look) but when resuming i again get a blank screen, and a flashing power led. [Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
I have some other piece of information that might solve the mystery: A few days ago, i was trying to connect a display to my laptop, and have a vlc video on it. I used the nvidia-settings to detect and enable the new display with the proper resolution. VLC crashed when resized or maximized, but that's another issue and it's not important in this picture. The thing that happened is that after a few X restarts, and a few console switches (Ctrl+Alt+F1 and then Ctrl+Alt+F7 and a again a few times) and some other actions, the Console (F1) crashed with the same pretty colors i get in the suspend hang. I was able to switch back to X though by Ctrl+Alt+F7. Switching again to the first text console revealed the colors. The thing is, even with a not working console, now suspend WORKED! all the time actually. I suspended and revived it a lot of times, with succesful results. What happened next is that i accidentally shut the computer down, rendering in the previous unable to suspend state. :(( Can it be related to the console video mode? Or can i make some configuration changes that it would skip using the console when suspending or anything like this? maybe one of you has an idea on some fix :( -- Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
It seems that disabling the nvidia restricred driver will let me suspend succesfully, so the problem is in linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24, mainly nvidia-glx-new (That's what the procedure in debugging kernel suspend was supposed to tell me, right?). The workaround in #123104 doesn't seem to work. [Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
Hi Daniel, Sorry for the delayed response. I'm wondering if this may actually be an issue with Xorg rather than the kernel since you said you were able to successfully suspend and resume from the console. But, just to start testing from the current development tree, the Hardy Heron Alpha series was recently released which contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Note, you can only test Suspend from the LiveCD, not Hibernate. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks. ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
somehow, on Feisty Fawn i did manage to solve this problem, using a strange combination of settings which i don't remember any more :( Now on a fresh install of Gutsy Gibbon, suspend doesn't work anymore, showing the colored screen once again on every resume. I'm pretty sure it's related to the way that the kernel or video driver handles the memory of the video board while suspending and resuming. If there is the need for the details, i'll be happy to provide the updated ones. [Bug 118458] Re: Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate
Update: as an experiment, i've tried the command in the HowTo after i've switched to another (non-graphical) console by pressing ALT+CTRL+F2. The System entered the suspend state, and pressing the power button recovered in in the console, apparently with all things working properly. However, Pressing CTRL+ALT+F7 to go back to the xorg graphical interface seems to put it back in the unrecoverable state described above. Right after the successful resume in the console based virtual terminal i've saved the dmesg output, and attached it here as suspend2.log.gz. If any more information is needed please let me know. Thanks! ** Attachment added: suspend2.log.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/7933479/suspend2.log.gz -- Acer Aspire 1510LMi won't go to sleep or hibernate https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/118458 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
