Re: [Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
In one upgrade I did from 8.04 to 8.10 I did not encounter any issues. However, without understanding why or what caused this, I cannot say whether or not that one upgrade was a comparable test...it was on a different box than when I saw the original issue. jay On Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 3:54 PM, Teej wrote: > I haven't noticed this debconf upgrade issue in Intrepid or Jaunty. [Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
Ok, I was right, it was a mismatch between perl and libraries it depends on. Here is what I did. (This is all for Kubuntu but as the upgrade manager died early in the process and I did everything from the command line I presume this applies to Ubuntu as well). First I thought maybe it installed new libc but not perl so I installed new perl packages manually from /var/cache/apt/archive. That did not help so I decided to reboot. After the reboot the X did not come up but I expected that. 'dpkg --configure debconf' still crashed. So here we have old libc6 and new perl (which behaves exactly like the old one) and the debconf script makes perl crash with corrupted stack. It follows that there is some other library required by perl that has been upgraded for Gutsy and which really requires new libc but wasn't configured to depend on the new libc. I installed the new libc6 packages manually. Finally 'dpkg --configure debconf' worked! I went on to do the usual loop of 'dpkg --configure -a', 'apt-get -f install' and 'apt-get dist-upgrade' ad nauseum untill it installed all the packages. At one point I had to manually install acpid because it refused to restart it from the apt-get process. I rebooted and got kernel panic and missing /dev/null. I unplugged the machine and booted it up again. Finally I have working Kubuntu 7.10. So it all comes down to bad dependencies wich is really sad - both perl and libc are such a fundamental parts of the system that one would think they should have been tested to death. -- Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
I have just encountered this bug trying to upgrade to Gutsy. And I thought that by now it should be mature enough :( At this point none of the recipes given above work, all I am getting is dpkg --configure -a Setting up debconf (1.5.14ubuntu1) ... *** stack smashing detected ***: /usr/bin/perl terminated dpkg: error processing debconf (--configure): subprocess post-installation script killed by signal (Segmentation fault) Setting up dash (0.5.4-1ubuntu3) ... *** stack smashing detected ***: /usr/bin/perl terminated dpkg: error processing dash (--configure): etc no matter how many times I try. Both apt-get and aptitude refuse to do anything and tell me to run 'dpkg --configure -a' first. I deleted the dpkg lock files as well. To me it looks like a problem with upgrading of perl packages since debconf is written is perl and it is clear that perl process crashes with stack corruption. Since everything else depends on debconf the upgrade logic is stuck. The last upgrade I did was 25th november. Actually it was my father who finally got the message that theres an upgrade available. He startet the upgrade. [Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
I just came a cropper of this one too. The good news is it seems to be survivable. After the bug appeared, the upgrade tool was frozen trying to upgrade the next package in the sequence. I clicked the X to close the upgrader window and, IIRC, dismissed a warning. I then opened a konsole window and did a $ ps ax | grep apt and $ ps ax | grep adept, to locate any package management apps still open. I killed them (one was python, as I recall). I then removed the lock files as described by Mayeul KAUFFMANN further up the page. I then ran various combinations of $ sudo dpkg --configure -a, $ sudo apt-get (with various arguments) and now I am back at my desktop. I had the same problems upgrading Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10. Running "sudo dpkg --configure -a", running adept a few times and rebooting seems to have done the trick. Only thing is, that now, every time I install an update, adept asks me if I want to upgrade my distribution. If I decide to upgrade to this new distribution (7.10, which I am already running) the upgrade runs until I reach the 'modifying software channels' step, at which point I'm told that the system is already up to date and that the upgrade will be canceled . My guess would be that there is some configuration file or some such that still lists my system as being 7.04. My system is running fine, so it's no big problem, but if anybody knows how I can resolve this without a full re-install, I'd like to know. -- Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I just finished my update. I have to say I am not impressed lately with Ubuntu. I have run into a total of 4 bugs so far (including this one) between 2 computers. All bugs were show stoppers for me and if I had not have had some decent experience with Linux my two machines would have been a bricks right now. I know this isn't really the place for these complaints, but where is the proper place? Anyway, things seem to go find with the dist-upgrade and then reboot. All hell seemed to break loose as I couldn't boot. When running in single user mode I saw a lot of references to "dm-linear" flashing by my screen. A quick google search told me to remove the evms package. Which I could do from a feisty kernel. After that, well, I'm typing this in KDE now... so it worked. These bugs are serious, and now I'm a bit concerned that my machine is in an invalid state. How do I know if there are other Feisty packages that need to still be removed? How can I confirm Gusty is in place correct? Is there some sort of checksum function? As a side note, World of Warcraft is still working. [Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
I have the same problem with the upgrade to Kubuntu 7.10. I noticed, that the segfault happend right after my memoryusage skyrockets. I have 1 GB of RAM. Right before the error-message the memory-usage jumps from approx. 250MB to >1GB (using at least 250MB of swap). Before rebooting, saw in adept that many packages were broken. I tried to reload and update through adept, but, after a while, adept crashed. [Bug 147429] Re: Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10
I'm back tonight. Here is what I did after having the above problem to try and solve that (I'm not sure whether it's the right place, sorry if it is not). I first made sure that no package manager program was running, then I typed the following: sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/lock sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock sudo apt-get install #it gave me the following advice, which I followed: sudo dpkg --configure -a It restarted the installation for the above mentioned broken packages, starting with "Paramétrage de debconf (1.5.14ubuntu1) ..." (there are still dependency problems with 'gs-common' and 'gs-esp' ['ghostscript' lacking]) I checked that "debconf (1.5.14ubuntu1) " is for 7.10 (1.5.13ubuntu1 is for 7.04), so I guess it's a good sign. Then I started again adept-manager (from the icon), clicking "update everything". It started downoading eveything again. When it'll be finished (in a few hours...) I'll try to reboot and I'll post here if it worked. -- Could not install 'debconf' during System upgrade 7.04 to 7.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/147429 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Upgrading from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10 RC1 using the Adept instructions on kubuntu wiki gave the same problem for me.
