@Eric, The hanging happens when you reach page 10 not when you select text as described in the description of this report. In your particular case, Evince memory consumption jumps to 1.7GB when you reach page 10 (first page with formulas) If you don't have enough memory the system begins to swap, generates lots of IO and CPU activity. I get the same hanging behavior with "Evince Document Viewer 2.22.1.1" under Hardy (release) 8.04, with the following PDF: http://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/GRE/pdf/Math.pdf . It's the practice math GRE subject test. Evince has a problem when scrolling down to problem #10 or so. The computer appears to be completely locked up, but if I press ctrl-alt-bkspace, X will restart after a minute or so. The hard drive is thrashing the entire time. Same problem 2.6.22.1.1 hardy heron built a debug version to see what was going on, but it worked perfectly. Could give you a backtrace of the failing version, but without symbols it doesn't look helpful. Slightly bizarre, but when I uninstalled the debug version installed in /usr/local, the other version started working for the first time in weeks! Perhaps it was something the install of the debug version did? It happens not with all files, but at least with an attached one. Just enter the presentation mode (F5) and try to make a selection.
