[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
I haven't been able to reproduce the volume problem after upgrading to the Hardy beta (currently kernel 2.6.24-15-generic). So I assume this should be closed. -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
Note entirely sure what the correct procedure is, but since the problem appears to be gone in Hardy, I'm assuming Fix Released is appropriate. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Fix Released -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks! (Perhaps that wiki page should be updated to recommend this for the 1420n as well sa the XPS M1330n?) Rhythmbox exhibits slightly different behavior now, intermittently just refusing to continue playing the current song after resume until playback is stopped and restarted. I haven't tried to figure out whether that's specific to rhythmbox. In any case, it may be an unrelated bug. The left channel also produced no sound on the boot after installing the new modules. That fixed itself after suspend/resume, and I haven't booted again yet. -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
That's correct. Though actually, at least with rhythmbox, once I've played a sound I actually have to quit rhythmbox to prevent the problem occurring. So: - If I've never played any sound, and I suspend/resume, no problem. - If I start rhythmbox, don't play any sound, then suspend/resume, no problem. - If I start rhythmbox, start a track playing, then suspend/resume, the problem occurs. - If I start rhythmbox, start a track playing, pause it, then suspend/resume, the problem occurs. - If I start rhythmbox, strart a track playing, quit rhythmbox, then suspend/resume, no problem. I'm happy to try anything that'd help pinpoint the problem.
So it seems that the problem only presents itself if Rhythmbox (or any other app, for that matter) is playing sound when you invoke suspend/hibernate? If you pause/stop sound, then the problem never occurs? -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
The problem could be related to Rhythmbox, have you tried with a different app? How about Totem? What if you play an mp3 file instead of ogg? I'm curious, what video card are you using? [Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
It's not specific to rhythmbox. I also tried doing a suspend and resume while playing mp3's with totem and with the play command. Both triggered the problem. Another interesting detail is that whenever the problem occurs there's also a very soft digital click between 2 and 3 times a second, which is absent normally. (And lspci identifies the video card as an Intel Mobile GM965/GL960. I think (I may have forgotten) that was the only option with this model.) For the sound it says: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
I can confirm this problem in gutsy on a Dell 1420n using rhythmbox and amarok. I also haven't been able to pinpoint what triggers this, but also suspect an issue with suspend. This could possibly be related to the bug filed at the Dell Linux Wiki http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.10/Issues/Audio_Failure_On_Resume which references this LP filed bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell/+bug/146690. When you resume from suspend, do you get a notification that the volume applet crashed and have to reload? -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 173942] Re: volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n
Experimenting some more: this isn't specific to rhythmbox, but to all sounds (e.g., the sounds gdm makes on login are also affected) I verified that I can temporarily fix the problem by rebooting. I haven't found any other way to stop the problem once it's started. I did a suspend/resume after rebooting without triggering the problem. I then did a second suspend/resume, this time while playing an ogg file with the play command. This time the problem did occur on resume. I also tried controlling the volume with the volume applet and the master slider on the gnome volume control, and the behavior is the same as when I use the volume keys on the keyboard.
I haven't found any other way to stop the problem once it's started. I take that back--a third suspend/resume, this time without anything playing during the suspend, cleared the problem. So the problem appears to occur if and only if I suspend and then resume while a sound is playing. -- volume increases uncontrollably on Dell 1420n https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173942 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
