Re: [Bug 184581] Re: Problem with Visual Effects under Ubuntu 7.10

2008-03-08 Thread Franco Sirovich
Dear Gregg, I finally had time to install Hardy. I activated the extra
visual effects and OpenOffice works correctly!
I do not have installed the CompizConfig Settings Manager, that does not
come with the 8.04, and therefore I don't know whether Workarounds is
enabled or not. But anyway, now the special effects work, they are set
approximately as I had them using the CompizConfig Settings Manager, and
I am satisfied!! I do not want to install something that is not on the
beta, otherwise the problem reports might be confusing...
Problem is solved, as far as I am concerned.
Thanks a lot for your efforts,

Franco

 Franco,

 Thank you for your response.

One thing you can try when using the LiveCD is after installing the
nvidia-glx-new driver is to restart X (the software that controls the
graphics). To do that a quick way is by pressing CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE.
That will kill X (and any running program) and it will restart itself.
That might be enough to be able to use the Visual Effects. If not...

If you are willing to install 8.04 on that separate partition that would
be great. And yes, you can install it without effecting your current
installation. Just make sure you know which partition you want to
install it on and only format that one (not any others).

 Thanks!

Dear Gregg, I tried but still the special effects are not available. By
the way, the X server did not get the CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE signal, and I
instead killed the X process.

I will try to install the 8.04 but I am afraid I will have no time for
it until Friday...
I'll keep you informed!

2008-02-18 Thread Franco Sirovich
Dear Greg!
Thanks for your time and efforts!
I have tried the live image, but with it on my computer the special
effects cannot be enabled.
I have a VAIO VGN-SZ3XP/C with NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400. I have tried to
install the nvidia-glx-new driver but probably it needs a reboot that
doesn't work with the live CD. I have a partition I could install 8.04
on, but I do not know whether I would loose the 7.10 I have on the
remaining partitions. Sorry for my ignorance!|

Let me know how I could help you,

Franco Sirovich

You can use a LiveCD so you don't have to install it on your harddrive.

[Bug 184581] Re: Problem with Visual Effects under Ubuntu 7.10

2008-01-21 Thread Franco Sirovich
Hello Everybody!
I have found a workaround and I have some huint about the feature that is
responsible for the problem.
I have installe the compizconfig-settings-manager, and then adopted the
custom variant of the Special Effects. Using the Advanced Desktop Effects
Settings control that appears on the Preference pull down menu, I worked with
the various features that appear there and found that is I disable the
Workaroundsfeature that is located under the Utility category, OPenOffice
works perfectly.
So, disabling Workarounds is a workaround (:-)!
