[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2012-07-23 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Frank Niedermann, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't
been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an
issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the
development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do
not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the
bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the
'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow
pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description
and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment
on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment
as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2009-06-09 Thread Dainius 'GreatEmerald' Masiliūnas
Confirmed with Xubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope, 2.6.28 kernel. The bug is
just as described - dmesg says that NetworkManager assumes that the
wireless is out of range, and changing mlme.c fixes the issue, but, of
course, chankging the kernel each time isn't optimal. Using Ralink
RT2500 card.

A workaround guide can be found here:

Kernel 2.6.30.rc5 doesn't do this any more. It might also have been
fixed in 2.6.30.rc4 but I can't be sure because that kernel crashed with
bluetooth errors on startup, so I couldn't use it.

Also using backport-modules on jaunty. Seems, the problem is when
re-associating takes more than 2 seconds.

http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.wireless.general/31690/focus=31691
talks a lot about this bug, and i think changing tha timeout from 2 to
10 seconds as a workaround might be a good interims solution, until a
proper fix lands in the wireless-git tree.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2009-04-19 Thread Rocko
I'm experiencing this bug using linux-backports-modules v2.6.28-11.12 on
the Jaunty release candidate, running iwlagn for an Intel Corporation
PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61) card
connecting to a hidden 11N network with fluctuating signal strength. It
doesn't happen using the standard (non-backports) drivers (but the
standard drivers have other problems, such as crashing on system
shutdown).

network-manager does reconnect when it fails, which is great, but it is
extremely annoying that the network is disconnecting in the first place.
It does it randomly at intervals between one minute(?) and an hour.

I found this message talking about a simple hack in the mac80211 code to
stop the disconnects: http://www.gossamer-
threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/942194 - maybe it's the same thread Jeff
mentioned in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/200500/comments/28.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-11-22 Thread Mike Gerwitz
When I first commented on this bug report, I thought that this was some
type of kernel/driver bug. Apparently it's not. This message is
consistent with when my router seems to go down, as I found out when a
friend using Windows experienced a disconnect at the same time while
using my wireless connection.

My simple solution: use NetworkManager. I had disabled it as it was
buggy during the Intrepid RC releases, but now it works like a charm and
immediately reconnects me once the router becomes available again after
this error, as you can see below:

[337749.729069] wlan0: No ProbeResp from current AP 00:15:e9:76:1a:ee - assume

Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that lspci
-vvnn was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an Ubuntu
package that will resolve a bug, however that attachment doesn't appear
to be one. Subsequently I've unchecked the patch flag for it. In the
future keep in mind the definition of a patch. Thanks!

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-09-12 Thread Mike Gerwitz
I do not think that this fix will be applied in future kernels---I'm not
even entirely comfortable applying it to my kernel. Having to allow for
response times 50x slower than normal is hardly a fix. As far as I've
seen in this report, the problem hasn't been found.

I've tested one of the most recent kernels to date and the problem still
exists. So there's no way in saying how long it'll take. So I'd say try
compiling the kernel. It's not too difficult to do, just confusing at
first.

2008-09-11 Thread Balaji
Hi,

Btw, can you all please help me in this:

I cannot compile kernels right now. I like using Linux, but I don't want to
use self-compiled kernels right now, unless I become an expert at it. I can
start learning now that I have two laptops, but I'd not waste time on it
with so much research pending. So, will you guys please tell me if your
'fixes' if you have found any, are going to go into the next kernel
distribution? If yes, which one?

Thanks,
Balaji

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-09-11 Thread Mike Gerwitz
After attempting what was stated in my previous message (modifying the
monitoring interval to 100 * HZ and recompiling the kernel), I have
not received the error. My PC has been on since my last post and my net
has not gone down. Speeds are excellent - above what I thought my max
was. I see no other problems.

I also noticed that the same error is happening on another computer of
mine, where it previously didn't. It may be attributed to a new kernel
version (2.6.25, while it was previously using 2.6.24). Therefore, I do
not think this problem lies within the rt61* drivers.

It's a good fix until others figure out a more effective solution. Hope
it helps everyone else.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-09-08 Thread Mike Gerwitz
I am not using Ubuntu (Gentoo, vanilla sources, kernel 2.6.27), however
I'm having the same problem, so hopefully this information will help.

I do not use NetworkManager (it didn't handle my wireless properly), so
that is not the problem. I searched the driver source for the phrase,
but could not find it anywhere - does anyone know where this error
message originates?

grep -rl ProbeResp ./

I used the above command to locate any strings within all files in the
source directory and found nothing of use. However, using the above
command to search for No ProbeResp in the kernel source directory
(2.6.27) produced the following file, in which I found the error
message:

/usr/src/linux/net/mac80211/mlme.c (line 1059)

Above, the following link was referenced:

http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=5t=2081p=30312hilit=No+ProbeResp+from+current+AP#p30312

However, the file it references does not appear to exist within kernel
2.6.27. The file you are looking for to modify
IEEE80211_MONITORING_INTERVAL is the above file (mlme.c). This is the
constant that is referenced when a timeout is determined. I'll set it to
a higher value (default seems to be 2 * HZ), recompile, and post back
with any success. Either way, it'll only be a temporary fix - we'll need
to take it up with serialmonkey to figure out the real problem. Hope
this helps.

I use the driver rt61pci

Wireless works fine until this error occurs, seemingly randomly. This
occurs both when the connection is in use and idle. To restart the
connection, I sometimes have to remove the kernel module and re-modprobe
it, then restart the interface:

===
$ rmmode rt61pci
$ modprobe rt61pci
$ /etc/init.d/net.wlan0 restart
===

The connection then works properly again until the next error, as pasted
above from dmesg.

I've tried this already. Didn't help. I've also tried commenting various
parts of mlme.c, and none of it has made a difference.

I was hoping 2.6.27-rc4/rc5 would solve this (there were a few mac80211
association issues fixed), and it helped slightly, but not enough to fix
the issue. Now, at least, I can stay associated to an AP for any length
of time. But, almost the *instant* any traffic goes over the WG111, the
NoProbeResp messages come up and the association is killed, not to be
resurrected.

FWIW, an atheros bases pcmcia card (wpc54ag IIRC) works fine with ubuntu
kernels and 2.6.27-rc[45].

Will try with the ubuntu 2.6.27 kernel and/or 8.10 Alpha5.

[Bug 200500] Re: mac80211: WLAN losing connection: No ProbeResp

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
