[Bug 237471] Re: no virtualbox-ose-modules package for latest kernel (2.6.24-18)

2008-06-05 Thread Kevin Fishburne
Most of you probably are aware of this, but for people who are freaking
out because their VMs don't work and don't know what to do:

Open a terminal.
Open Synaptic Package Manager by issuing the command: gksudo synaptic
Search by name for "virtualbox-ose-modules".
Take note of the latest version you have installed (2.6.24-16, for example).
Close Synaptic Package Manager.
Issue the command: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
Scroll to the bottom where your menu list entries are defined.
Copy/paste the menu entry block for the kernel version that matches your
VirtualBox modules version to the top of the menu entry list. This will cause
the GRUB boot loader to load the old kernel by default, which will match your
VirtualBox modules version, which will cause VirtualBox to work normally again.
Reboot to load the old kernel version.
Test VirtualBox.

Funny this hasn't been confirmed, and even stranger there aren't more
cries about this...is no one using VirtualBox? It blows VMWare away as
far as I'm concerned. The repository maintainers need to add this to
their "list of things to pay attention to" for sure.

[Bug 237471] Re: no virtualbox-ose-modules package for latest kernel (2.6.24-18)

2008-06-05 Thread Daniel Rheinbay
Kevin,
thanks for your comment. However, for some people this might not be acceptable
as they'd have to use an old kernel.

Note: For those of you who do not want to go through the following
steps, just use the attached deb-Package which is the result of the
following process.

This work-around does not rely on using outdated software:

0) Open up a command line. Don't worry, the workaround is straight forward and
doesn't require any file editing.
1) Install module-assistant. This program is used to compile kernel modules
from source code and build debian modulels. Simply do:
sudo aptitude install module-assistant
2) Tell module-assistant to build, package and install your new modules; all
done in the regular Debian way:
sudo module-assistant auto-install virtualbox-ose
This will automagically prepare everything it needs.
3) Reboot your system.
Note: If you followed Kevin's instructions above, make sure you boot the
current kernel. Obviously, this workaround works anytime they release a new
kernel without updating the virtualbox modules. Once they release updated
versions of the virtualbox modules, these will be installed during your regular
system updates.

Hope this helps.

All best,
Dan

2008-06-05 Thread oscar
Don't think that reverting to the old kernel is a satisfactory solution.
I have the restricted version of virtualbox on my other computer (I need USB
support there). After the kernel update it popped up a message box saying how
to fix it: running with sudo some command "/etc/??? setup" (unfortunately I did
not kept notes). It came up with something saying that it was re-compiling
some module, and after that everything works perfectly again. Would the same
thing work with the ose version?

All best,
Dan

[Bug 237471] Re: no virtualbox-ose-modules package for latest kernel (2.6.24-18)

2008-06-05 Thread Kevin Fishburne
The previous attachment is a PNG, btw. Here's a corrected
/boot/grub/menu.lst file. I transposed the 2.6.24-16 and 2.6.24-18
entries. If there's an easier way, like some way to flag a menu entry as
the default regardless of its order, please let me know.

All best,
Dan

[Bug 237471] Re: no virtualbox-ose-modules package for latest kernel (2.6.24-18)

Re my previous post, the restricted version is fixed with:

 sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

Does not work with ose.

tried
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup

 and got:
* Usage: /etc/init.d/vboxdrv {start|stop|restart|status}

so looked deeper

# Modified for Ubuntu by Daniel Hahler: # ‐ Removed "setup" ac‐
tion # ‐ Removed "/lib/lsb/init‐functions"‐conditional

Tried VB anyway...

and it WORKED!

Now I cant tell what worked here as I had tried this off a blog:

sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-source
sudo m-a update
sudo m-a prepare
sudo m-a a-i virtualbox-ose
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv restart

but it didnt work for me...

Anyway thought I would share :)
