[Bug 248791] Re: Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz
This is not an invalid bug, we need a way to switch compiz on and off when running 3D full screen applications, otherwise performance is severely hindered. Having to reset all our desktop settings each time this UI is touched makese no sense considering it's the only default provided. People will more often than not assume the behaviour is intentional and be frustrated. -- Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/248791 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 248791] Re: Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz
So if I want to switch back and force between compiz and metacity without losing the settings made in compizconfig-settings-manager, the only option I have is to install simple-ccsm? Or is there another way to turn compiz back on and keep the settings? -- Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/248791 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 248791] Re: Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz
that's not a bug, you select a default compiz configuration which is applied, if you don't want to do that your should not use the appearance capplet to select a config or choose the custom option ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Low Assignee: (unassigned) = Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs) Status: New = Invalid -- Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/248791 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 248791] Re: Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (compiz) settings lost when change to metacity then back to compiz
Hi Laura, Just to clarify, you use System-Preferences-Appearance to turn compiz on and off? When you go to turn compiz back on do you select Extra or Custom? Do you have a Custom option? If not then try installing simple-ccsm. Does it work better if you select Custom to re-enable? Hi, Yes, I use System-Preferences-Appearance to turn compiz on ('Extra') and off ('None'). I don't have a 'Custom' option but I'll try installing simple-ccsm and append to this again.
Installed simple-ccsm. I think it's selecting 'Extra' that's causing the settings to be lost because if I select Custom, choose desktop cube instead of the default desktop wall, switch to None, then switch back to Custom, the cube seems to be retained. However, if I select Custom, choose desktop cube, switch to None, then switch to Extra, the cube is automatically replaced with the default setting of desktop wall - and if I then switch to Custom, the desktop wall option is retained.

Hi, Thanks for investigating further. It seems that what is happening is the selecting one of the pre-defined profiles, in this case Extra overwrites your compiz preferences. I thought I had seen bugs about this before, but I can't find them right now. Anyway, I reassign to gnome-control-center which provides the appearances capplet, and it seems like that may be thing doing the overwriting.
