ivancete, this is a kernel-related bug and I don't know if the people from Canonical are going to fix it. I downgraded my desktop computer to 7.10 and as soon as I'll have more time, I'll upgrade it directly to 8.10, where the problem seems to be fixed. -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

People from Canonical just adapt the kernel for the ubuntu distribution. Kernel is made by the kernel developers - the most talented programmers in the world who are willing to invest their free time in developing the best operating system ever. It is possible to install the 2.6.27 kernel on the 8.04, but this will be as much the same as doing an upgrade to 8.10, because most of the software in intrepid's repository isn't much newer that those in hardy's repository. Re: [Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
Ok, I will upgrade only the kernel, and later (if still dont work) i'll upgrade to 8.10. I supposed that is simple to install the new kernel, because all the upgrade will take along time, and sometimes don't adapted to the old version, we can try first with the kernel, in my opinion. Because like you said, the aplications dont change, only wifi support will increased and others features, but, i'm only use the distro to connect to internet with adsl, read mail, write docs and watch videos, listen music Also can upgrade, install, some package that were related with acpi?, right? my only bug is this, shutdown incorrect -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
Hi, I have a similar problem, I'm also have a MSI motherboard, the model is MSI 848 P Neo-V In my case, after successfully shut down the computer from Ubuntu, this is turned on immediately after being turned off. This does not happen from Windows XP, so the BIOS settings are ok. A couple of times, changing values in grub file menu.list, I could fix it but that solution is not served on other occasions. This happens since I installed 8.04, never report this error, but It happened long ago. Never came up with 7.10 or 7.04. Only in 8.04 Can the bug be fixed in 8.04? (I don't want to install 8.10 now) Thanks -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD. Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback. ** Tags added: cft-2.6.27 -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
I've done the upgrade of the BIOS, but the problem persists. I've found out how to change the time of turning the computer on. Go to you BIOS - power management - enable the wake on RTC alarm and set the alarm on the desired time. Restart the computer, re-enter the BIOS and now disable the wake on RTC alarm option. Your computer will now turn on at the specified time, ignoring the enabled/disabled option. Looks like kernel ignores that BIOS option and always react as it is enabled. You can also temporarely disable the turning on of the computer with the following commands: $ sudo -i # echo +-00-00\ 00:00:01 /proc/acpi/alarm Note that if you issue this command at e.g. 2008-08-20 09:00:00, your computer will turn on on 2008-08-21 09:00:01, provided you didn't turn on the computer for the whole day. Looks like kernel ignores date option as well as enabled/disabled option. After I figured that out, I made a little script that always set the alarm one second in the future at the shutdown process, thus getting a 24 hour guarantee that computer won't turn on. Unfortunately, lots of writing in /proc/acpi/alarm somehow messed up my BIOS, so that after couple of days of using the script, it somehow messed up my BIOS, thus making impossible for any OS to boot. Ubuntu kept giving me a kernel panic, and XP a blue screen. After a flash recovery, I made a clean install of gutsy and now everything works fine. 2008/8/19 sipan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi I have exact the same problem (only time is 2:22) and the same MSI motherboard. [Bug 253629] Re: Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu
We have discovered how to change the time at which the computer is to be turned on: In BIOS settings, there is an power management/Wake Up Events/Wake On Alarm option. This option is disabled by default, but it looks like hardy's kernel ignores the enabled/disabled option and always thinks that this option is enabled and upon shutting down schedules the BIOS to turn on the computer at the time which is configured in Wake On Alarm option (although it is disabled). If computer is mechanically turned off, then it doesn't turn on automatically. The same is if it is turned off from windows. Now, the question is: does windows (and kernels prior 2.6.24) turn computer off by putting it to G3 state, or there is definitely a bug in 2.6.24? -- Computer automatically turns on after proper shutdown from ubuntu https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/253629 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
