Adding colour to an Ubuntu wallpaper is _not_ the problem. Anyone who considers adding colour to Ubuntu a bug should be sentenced to at least four years of design study in the area of colour theory. Please be mature enough to realize that publishing a bug such as this will effectively set us back to the monochromatic Ubuntu years. By presenting this as a bug and dimwittingly agreeing to it, you are _not_ moving Ubuntu's art and design ahead. There are extremely high profile people at Ubuntu who firmly believe that adding colour to Ubuntu confuses the palette. The poor execution present in this wallpaper should _not_ be used as an I told you so. This wallpaper has far more significant problems than the colours. Ubuntu needs _more_ colour in its presentation, not less. It _does_ require well planned and executed colour however, which this wallpaper may be accused of suffering from, among other ailments. The entire point of the bug report is that an overwhelming number of people think the wallpaper is horrible. If you looked up the word hideous in the dictionary it would say see Ubuntu Intrepid. There has been a new theme promised twice and this is not even an attempt to deliver this. This is how Microsoft handles things, they completely ignore what the end user's want. Is this really how we want Intrepid to be viewed? I have now read two reviews that have had very negative comments regarding the theme and wallpaper. There are one man distributions with better artwork that this! Ubuntu is probably the only distribution in history that has a bug report filed against it's artwork. Doesn't that say something? Does any other distribution have hundreds of reply s on it's forums about how bad the the wallpaper is? There needs to be change. Two releases now people have been anxiously waiting for change in the theme and wallpaper. I thought Ubuntu is Linux For Human Beings. Human beings are asking for decent artwork. What possible reason could there be for not having better artwork? Ubuntu can build a distribution that is #1 on Distrowatch.com but can not include better artwork than the current default? The current wallpaper is tasteless, ugly, and gives the wrong impression to someone who is trying Ubuntu for the first time. The current choice of the wallpaper conveys a message of unprofessional quality that will cause many first timers to steer clear of even trying Ubuntu. There are countless better choices out there, even just within the Ibex community art, and the Gnome-art pages. I certainly hope this IS a joke and that we get something decent for the final release. This is the worst I think I've ever seen though the elephant hide came close! To be more constructive... I really like the Heron wallpaper - I was very impressed with that - striking, different, colourful, yet with the Ubuntu Heron theme firmly visible. I have been hoping to see something similar using an Ibex for the 8.10 release. This discussion has made the rounds at the Ubuntu Forums several times as well. Someone at the forums said it was unproductive to complain there, since the devs don't usually read the forums; that's why I think this bug exists. If there's a *more* appropriate venue for these concerns, do tell. (Oh yeah, and just so there's no confusion: I think the current Ibex wallpaper is , to put it bluntly, ugly. My first reaction to seeing it was eurgh. I'm pretty sure I've never had that sort of reaction to previous Ubuntu wallpapers. I hate to 'me too' in a bugreport, but I just can't keep quiet any longer. How can this wallpaper be the best the wiki or other sources have to offer? PLEASE don't ship with this front - Ubuntu will be mocked for it to no end! Focus would be on artwork for this cycle, so everyone is keeping a close eye on us in that regard. At least show that we are working on it. Here is my forum post, hope it will help the discussion here, too. Didn't Mark Shuttleworth spoke about being more beautiful than Apple at OSCON 2008? Don't we all want to fix bug #1? The first impression of Ubuntu is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of attracting new users. Booting has to be more attractive than just plainly copying Windows. The transition from Usplash to GDM has to be a nice fading, the transition from GDM to Gnome has to be a nice fading. Not *BOOM* Black to Brown and *BOOM*Brown to Orange *BOOM* to background... And most of all: the WALLPAPER has to be attractive! A default Gnome screen of 1280x1024 has to bars of both 24px, that leaves 1249280 pixels of wallpaper, if I did my math correct, that's 96.2% of the screen! While I appreciate that everyone wants to voice their opinion, it seems we've come to the consensus that the wallpaper is not quite up to par with how we feel about Ubuntu. Perhaps at this point it would be more valuable to spend our time hacking around in GIMP or Inkscape to produce some better options, rather than repeatedly agreeing that this wallpaper isn't quite up to par. I subscribed to the mailing list as suggested. With all due respect, this bug report was written because a new theme has been promised twice now. The current default theme is hideous and people are trying their best to speak up about it. There is an outcry for change and the community wants to be heard. I have read one review on the beta and the new artwork was mentioned in a very negative manor. There is still time to change this situation and community members have submitted some quality artwork that could be used. There was community outcry about the EULA that Mozilla wanted to include and there was change. The point is the decision making in including one out of the better ones and efforts we've put forth and taken the time to create. Perhaps we could get consensus approval from the people on this list, which would at least respect the artist's time, effort and donation of copyright, to Canonical by at least asking our opinion, moving forward. I think that the gdm theme looks better than the previous one. Possibly if the wallpaper had similar colored circles it might look pretty good. What spoils the wallpaper is the green and magenta circles. The green is especially distracting.
