[Bug 289239] Re: [intrepid ubuntu] gnome-ppp lacks permissions

2010-03-11 Thread ullix
I recovered my old Zoom USB modem from the scrap box and tested it on
Karmic. It is worse than it ever was, it is not even finding the modem.
here is what i did:

1) installed gnome-ppp
2)plugged in USB modem
3)looked at dmesg:
[ 5775.796157] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 6
[ 5775.916161] usb 2-1: device descriptor read/64, error -71
[ 5778.617516] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
[ 5778.622401] cdc_acm 2-1:1.0: ttyACM4: USB ACM device
which I interpret as a modem at ttyACM4, corrrect?
4)started gnome-ppp from the terminal and clicked connect. this happened:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: Connecting...
GNOME PPP: STDERR: -- WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
GNOME PPP: STDERR: -- Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: -- Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: STDERR: -- Cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory
GNOME PPP: Unable to KILL wvdial process!
5) clicked on Setup, then clicked on Detect (Modem device). Answer: No modem
detected on your system
6) clicked on the down arrow of Device: it shows /dev/modem, /dev/ttyS0...S3,
/dev/USB0 ...USB3 but no /dev/ttyACM

this is what the terminal says, when I click on Detect:
~$ gnome-ppp
WVCONF: /home/ullix/.wvdial.conf
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Editing `/dev/null'.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: Modem Port Scan*1: S0 S1 S2 S3 ACM0 ACM1 ACM2 ACM3
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDERR: ttyACM4Info: Device or resource busy
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Scanning your serial ports for a modem.
GNOME PPP: STDERR: Modem Port Scan*1: ACM4
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another
program?
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Did you configure it properly with setserial?
GNOME PPP: STDOUT:
GNOME PPP: STDOUT: Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wiki/?WvDial

@ullix: in karmic, you need to uninstall the modemmanager package, as
it ties up the serial ports it finds. If you could uninstall that and
reboot and try again, please.

[Bug 289239] Re: [intrepid ubuntu] gnome-ppp lacks permissions

2010-03-11 Thread ullix
I tried my Zoom USB modem on another computer with a Lucid install.

Had to install gnome-ppp.
Pluggin in the modem: dmesg showed it as
[10818.910199] usb 5-2: configuration #1 chosen from 2 choices
[10818.912543] cdc_acm 5-2:1.0: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

then starting gnome-ppp: had to Detect the modem in the setup, and it
immediately detected it. But it is NOT listed in the drop-down box.
Oddly enough, it is shown as an analog modem, not a USB modem.

Tried to make a few dial-ins: none would work, but the log seems to
indicate taht it would have connected if it could. It could not, because
I am now on a VOIP phone line, and those numbers are blocked or don't
work for technical reasons.

Can't tell whether it worked, but did not see strange messages on lacking
permissions and such.

2008-12-19 Thread ullix
Well, the action on this bug report wasn't exactly overwhelming ...

In the meantime I discovered how I can get the modem to work by brute
force, but someone more competent than me needs to change this into
something presentable! It seems to be solely an issue of file
permissions.

what I did: changed those files/directories to mode 777:

 /etc/ppp/chap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/pap-secrets
 /etc/ppp/peers/
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial
 /etc/ppp/peers/wvdial-pipe

after the change, this is what it looks like :
