2010-10-05 Thread Omer Akram
thanks for confirming that. I am closing this bug now but feel free to

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2010-10-04 Thread Rocko
I haven't noticed the double-notification in 10.04 or 10.10. In fact on
the laptop where it was happening, I don't get *any* notifications
appear when I change the brightness.

the problem was reported for Ubuntu 9.04 and it will be really helpful
if you could confirm the existence of this issue with Ubuntu 10.04 or
10.10 Thanks

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-04-22 Thread hrushikesh
Ok, I think I may have found out what's causing the problem in my case.
After booting, there is just one notify-osd process running. If I press
volume increase/decrease keys, I get one notification, as expected.
However, if I try to change the brightness using the brightness keyboard
keys, another notify-osd process gets started by root. From that point
on, I keep getting two notifications for any event.

So, changing the brightness somehow requires higher privileges, and
hence a new notify-osd process under root is started.

Does this make sense? Any idea why brightness should require superuser
privileges?

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-04-15 Thread hrushikesh
Yes, I see two notification boxes/bubbles - one is themed (uses my
custom theme), and one isn't(uses the default theme). I can tell this
because the non-themed one takes about half second more to disappear
than the themed one.

It happens whenever I press the key-sequences to increase either volume
or brightness on my laptop computer. Yes, I still get the message on the
latest notify-osd.

hrushikesh, so you see two bubbles rendered on top of each other, but
only one notify-osd process? That happens with notify-osd 0.9.11?
Please, describe precisely how to reproduce this? Thanks in advance!

I use XMonad with gnome-settings-daemon, today was the first time
notify-osd started working automatically, and sadly this bug affects me
too. `ps aux` shows just one notify-osd process.

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-03-26 Thread David Barth
Hey! 2 processes... That should not happen because we're testing for
multiple instances on the bus. Except that it's a session bus, so it
means that multiple such busses can exist on the system at the same
time.

I think the case is rare, and that you should really use different
sessions.

As a workaround, we could prevent notify-osd from starting for the root
user. Thoughts?

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-03-25 Thread Rocko
I then switched to another user (without logging out of the first
account), and now notify-osd has two processes, one for each user and
none for root. The notification is appearing correctly for screen
brightness now (ie only one appears).

So it does seem likely that the root process is causing the second
window. But why would there been a root notify-osd process? In case it's
relevant, I rebooted recently (this morning) with an external monitor
attached (which isn't attached any more; but I've restarted X since then
although I haven't rebooted linux), and I've done 'sudo -s' in gnome-
terminal to get a root prompt.

[Bug 345251] Re: notify-osd shows double image for screen brightness control

2009-03-25 Thread Rocko
It _is_ running twice:

rocko 4103 0.0 0.5 178040 21236 ?S07:44 0:01
/usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd
root 4585 0.0 0.5 161124 20740 ?S07:48 0:00
/usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd

Oddly, I've only seen the screen brightness cause the double
notification.

Rocko, we're preparing a debug version. Monitor the team's PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~notify-osd-developers/+archive/ppa where it will
be uploaded. It will log synchronous bubbles in particular, as only
normal/asynchronous ones are currently logged in ~/.cache/notify-osd.log

It's doing it again. What happens is I press the brightness adjust, and
the normal notification window appears. Shortly afterwards (half a
second or so?), the smaller window appears over the top of the normal
window, and it fades away shortly after the normal window fades away.

2009-03-19 Thread Rocko
If it makes you feel better, it's not doing it any more after a
suspend/resume cycle!

Could it have been something to do with font sizes or screen DPI? After
I applied the latest updates and rebooted, I seem to recall that all my
font sizes had been reset to 13. instead of 10. Is it possible that
notify-osd was drawing two windows, one based on a font size of 10 and
another a font size of 13.333?

2009-03-19 Thread Mirco Müller
Wow... what the ?! *sigh* I've no machine, which has key for screen-
or keyboard-brightness. Right now I've no idea how that can possibly
happen. That's a nasty bug to scream into my face at the start of the
day. I wonder if other people are able to reproduce this. I'll leave it
at "New" until others come around verifying this. Rocko, this looks like
a tough one to fix.
