[Bug 432401] Re: [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)
@Chase: Regarding 2) sometimes (very scarce) my BIOS is displayed on the external monitor rather than the internal display. I think I used the opportunity to have a look at my monitor overlay to verify the resolution. I realize this is not very reliable, so if you really need this information, please tell me how to verify it for sure. At least I can say that 1024 x 768 was listed in 915resolution back when this tool was still necessary. 3) I can switch between pixel-per-pixel and stretch in my notebook BIOS. Right now, I am using pixel-by-pixel. -- [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432401 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 432401] Re: [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)
@Andreas Schildbach: I'm not terribly familiar with ddcprobe, and documentation is sparse, so I'm guessing that the mode: lines at the top are referring to your internal LVDS screen, and the *timing: lines at the bottom refer to your external monitor. 1. The mode lines suggest that your native resolution is 1280x1024, not 1280x768 as stated in the bug report. If that's correct, please update the original report with the 1280x1024 resolution. 2. Viewing the resolution from the bios output to your external monitor doesn't really help us because we are concerned with the internal monitor. The bios could use different modes depending on which monitor it is outputting to.
@Andreas Schildbach: Actually, I've looked at the output for ddcprobe on my laptop and it doesn't match my laptop's specifications or what xrandr outputs either. I'm not sure it's an effective tool for our usage. I looked up your laptop (Dell latitude X1), and I saw that it indeed has a 1280x768 screen. What I'm seeing in your X logs tells me that X thinks the 1024x768 screen is not possible based on your laptop's EDID table: (II) intel(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (hsync out of range) (II) intel(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (vrefresh out of range) (II) intel(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (vrefresh out of range) (II) intel(0): Not using default mode 1024x768 (vrefresh out of range) ... That may tell us some more information as to why jaunty's X server thinks 1024x768 is valid, but karmic's X server does not.
I just noticed the upstream bug report. It seems fairly clear to me that the old behavior was a side effect of poor edid interpretations by the user-mode setting support. The new, more accurate behavior in kernel- mode setting support is interpreting the edid parameters correctly and only allowing resolutions that are strictly supported by the edid timings. It is possible that 1024x768 could be coded as a default value in X, but that's an X development issue (and likely would not be accepted as reasonable). It's still possible to create your own mode using xrandr, but there won't be support for 1024x768 output on this device by default. As such, I'm closing this bug as invalid. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/432401 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 432401] Re: [i915gm] Intel/KMS: Missing 1024 x 768 mode (regression from Jaunty)
@Andreas Schildbach: I've discussed this bug with a few other kernel team members. There's a few points we'd like to bring up: 1. So we have a good idea of what the hardware is reporting, please install xresprobe and run ddcprobe. It will spit out all the resolutions that the hardware has said are possible. 2. You say the bios starts up in 1024x768. How have you verified this? We couldn't think of a way to do this off the top of our heads so we would like more information. 3. When in 1024x768 mode, is the resolution stretched to fill the screen, or are there borders on the sides to maintain the original aspect ratio? Our guess is that your bios is emulating 1024x768 mode by putting borders on the sides. Jaunty may have had a default 1024x768 mode that is no longer present in Karmic. However, it should be possible to restore the 1024x768 resolution using xrandr. You would need to add a new 1024x768 mode using --newmode, and then add it to your LVDS screen using --addmode. Please provide us with input for the questions and proposed solution. Andreas, as you are probably aware, the modesetting bits have moved to the kernel. as such, I am going to open a kernel task for this bug and close out the xorg task as invalid. I'd really appreciate a test against the latest Lucid build and, if the problem is present there, a test against the latest mainline vanilla kernel.
