Regarding 2) sometimes (very scarce) my BIOS is displayed on the
external monitor rather than the internal display. I think I used the
opportunity to have a look at my monitor overlay to verify the
resolution. I realize this is not very reliable, so if you really need
this information, please tell me how to verify it for sure.

At least I can say that 1024 x 768 was listed in 915resolution back when
this tool was still necessary.

3) I can switch between pixel-per-pixel and stretch in my notebook BIOS.
Right now, I am using pixel-by-pixel.

I'm not terribly familiar with ddcprobe, and documentation is sparse, so
I'm guessing that the mode: lines at the top are referring to your
internal LVDS screen, and the *timing: lines at the bottom refer to
your external monitor.

1. The mode lines suggest that your native resolution is 1280x1024, not
1280x768 as stated in the bug report. If that's correct, please update
the original report with the 1280x1024 resolution.

2. Viewing the resolution from the bios output to your external monitor
doesn't really help us because we are concerned with the internal
monitor. The bios could use different modes depending on which monitor
it is outputting to.

Actually, I've looked at the output for ddcprobe on my laptop and it
doesn't match my laptop's specifications or what xrandr outputs either.
I'm not sure it's an effective tool for our usage. I looked up your
laptop (Dell latitude X1), and I saw that it indeed has a 1280x768
screen. What I'm seeing in your X logs tells me that X thinks the
1024x768 screen is not possible based on your laptop's EDID table:

Is it possible for you to boot into jaunty (either a previous
installation or a boot cd) to capture the X log? That may tell us some
more information as to why jaunty's X server thinks 1024x768 is valid,
but karmic's X server does not.

I just noticed the upstream bug report. It seems fairly clear to me that
the old behavior was a side effect of poor edid interpretations by the
user-mode setting support. The new, more accurate behavior in kernel-
mode setting support is interpreting the edid parameters correctly and
only allowing resolutions that are strictly supported by the edid
timings. It is possible that 1024x768 could be coded as a default value
in X, but that's an X development issue (and likely would not be
accepted as reasonable).

It's still possible to create your own mode using xrandr, but there
won't be support for 1024x768 output on this device by default. As such,
I'm closing this bug as invalid.

I've discussed this bug with a few other kernel team members. There's a
few points we'd like to bring up:

1. So we have a good idea of what the hardware is reporting, please
install xresprobe and run ddcprobe. It will spit out all the resolutions
that the hardware has said are possible.

2. You say the bios starts up in 1024x768. How have you verified this?
We couldn't think of a way to do this off the top of our heads so we
would like more information.

3. When in 1024x768 mode, is the resolution stretched to fill the
screen, or are there borders on the sides to maintain the original
aspect ratio?

Our guess is that your bios is emulating 1024x768 mode by putting
borders on the sides. Jaunty may have had a default 1024x768 mode that
is no longer present in Karmic. However, it should be possible to
restore the 1024x768 resolution using xrandr. You would need to add a
new 1024x768 mode using --newmode, and then add it to your LVDS screen
using --addmode.

Please provide us with input for the questions and proposed solution.

 as you are probably aware, the modesetting bits have moved to the kernel. 
as such, I am going to open a kernel task for this bug and close out the xorg 
task as invalid.

I'd really appreciate a test against the latest Lucid build and, if the
problem is present there, a test against the latest mainline vanilla
kernel.
