Had similar problem. XUbuntu upgrade 9.04 to 9.10. Partial upgrade = Could not install the upgrades The upgrade is now aborted. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery will run now (dpkg --configure -a) Noticed in consolescreen behind the message box: IO error 9 openoffice..file reboot no avail, same problem. So i removed openoffice software via software install and rebooted. Ran upgrade again and now it does not stop. This is a confirmed bug, and apparently, we are expecting Ubuntu's developers to respond on this (and they haven't). I have no doubt this is still reproducible if one is willing to roll back to Jaunty, but this is just not a practical request. Last night, my experience was similar to this bug description. Early this afternoon, I saw a work around in a comment on this bug, which I do not see now. I think that work around involved a command to ignore openoffice.org-filter-binfilter, but I do not remember it. After running that work around in Applications, Accessories, Terminal, I ran System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager, Reload, Mark All Upgrades, Apply, which downloaded megabytes of apparently upgraded files, and reported another error, for which Google did not find any reference.
