I've found the SOLUTION! Whoa! The steps to fix the problem, working for me: 0. Play some music, so you can hear it. 1. Open console, run alsamixer there. 2. Find channel for your PCM device (for me it was PCM or PCM Front), moving balance on different channels 3. Open /etc/pulse/default.pa, add there: load-module module-alsa-sink control='Step2 channel name with right capitalization' 4. ??? 5. @Daniel Thanks for the help. After reading that article, I gather that my problem is caused by my USB soundcard not reporting the volume levels in dB properly. Although I did a fair bit of research on Google, I'm unable to find a solution to fix my problem. In any case, my case seems to be unrelated to the problem being discussed here. I have the same problem, but only with some applications (perhaps the pulseaudio - alsa bridge is the cause?). Concrete example: - Installed Ubuntu 9.10 daily build from around two weeks ago - fully updated - soundcard: Dell Inspiron 9400 built-in When I set a volume lower than ~20%, all sounds from Firefox (like a youtube video playing) are muted (ie. it jumps from quite loud to none). I am able to control the volume in a more gradual way both from inside the browser (ie. what the flash player offers) and from the Applications pane in the Sound preferences dialog.
